Great hosts, excellent with kids, great food

The food was delicious – we all had different pizzas. As a small appetizer, we were served bread with herb butter, olives, and pepperoni. Although we had a table where the waiters frequently walked by, I have to say that we weren't really given much attention. However, I would like to mention that the staff were very friendly.

Four of us dined at Hugo. The ambiance is cozy, quite nicely decorated, and the service is friendly, relaxed, fast, and cheerful. The appetizers – classic bruschetta, tomato soup, minestrone, and vitello tonnato – were generally good, although the vitello tonnato was quite sour – a bit unusual for a freshly prepared dish. All in all, it was still okay. For main courses, we had three pizzas and one spaghetti carbonara. The pizzas were acceptable in terms of taste, but the three people who ate them felt heavy in their stomachs. The spaghetti was al dente, but the carbonara was unfortunately – I have to say it harshly – a disaster. It was basically just a thick cream sauce with a few pieces of ham, which was extremely heavy in the stomach. Unfortunately, it had nothing to do with an Italian carbonara. Moreover, there was no (freshly grated) Parmesan cheese or even Grana Padano. The prices are a bit higher, which unfortunately doesn't quite match the quality of the food we experienced. Conclusion: The location and service are good, but the food is average at best. Therefore, unfortunately, we don't recommend it.

Yesterday, my wife and I went to HUGO I Trattoria Villa Italia in Gelsenkirchen for our anniversary – and we were absolutely thrilled! The food was excellent and of the highest quality, the atmosphere was very pleasant, and the service was incredibly friendly and welcoming. An all-around wonderful evening that we won't soon forget. We'd love to come back – highly recommended!

The food was delicious and the portions were really generous. Unfortunately, the service left something to be desired; drinks were only refilled after repeated requests. When we wanted to pay the bill, no one came at first, and after the bill arrived, no one wanted to accept the money, so we ended up leaving the money at the counter.

The food was good, albeit a bit expensive. Unfortunately, there was a misunderstanding with the waiter at the end: When he asked how it tasted, we said it was delicious. Apparently, he took that as 'so-so,' because his reaction was quite arrogant and inappropriate. This unfortunately somewhat tarnished an otherwise lovely evening. This is completely unacceptable.

Good food - terrible service. Absolutely horrible waiter with lines like "Put your cell phone away, you're not supposed to do that." "You only pay together and tip in cash." In return for the rude lines, you have to wait forever for anything, or have to beg repeatedly if you want to order something else. We're definitely not going here again.

The food is, as it has been for years, very, very good. My family and I have been guests at this restaurant for a long time. But what I experienced there on April 23, 2025 is anything but beautiful. For the second time, my request for a birthday decoration was not fulfilled. The waiters talk endlessly and when you notice that their bad jokes don't go over well, you blink your eye. Because of my terminal illness I have become very fat. That's no reason to compare me to my 84 year old mother. Years ago, when I looked much better, I was treated differently. I also have the feeling that there are certain prejudices there. You can't tell everyone how wealthy they are. Conclusion: as much as I love the food at Villa Italia, no one will see me or my family there anymore.

Absolute recommendation! The reception in the trattoria was very friendly. The service, in my opinion, is top notch. I like it when my contact person is funny and still on task. The portions were large, so the three of us were able to help ourselves to a portion of two.

At first it was a bit hectic and we had to wait a little longer. The waiters were still super nice and friendly the entire time. The food was very tasty, the tomato mozzarella wasn't quite ours (the tomatoes were cut too thick and the mozzarella was too firm), but that's also a matter of taste and didn't spoil the evening for us. The main courses were all delicious and everything was fresh. All in all, a successful evening and the four waiters rocked the big shop. Thank you, we'll be happy to come back!

Delicious pizza...but at €19.90, not exactly a bargain. The appetizer (a few olives and a few slices of bread) wasn't ordered but was charged. Mineral water was ordered for one person...and we got a large bottle. All five people were very satisfied with the food...although it's cheaper on Sylt, Pörtschach, or Düsseldorf.

We were at Villa Italia on Wednesday, March 19, 2025. Unfortunately, we had to wait for almost 20 minutes at our seats before we were even asked for drinks. Unfortunately, we were then also disappointed with the food. The bruschetta with mozzarella was a soft, tasteless mess. The main course of pizza and penne also took a long time to arrive, and some of it came out wrong. Both dishes tasted okay, but nothing more. All in all, we paid a little over 60 euros; sorry, but you can eat a lot better for that price. The long wait and the confusion were justified by a large group of 30 people who were in the restaurant at the same time. Unfortunately, that's not a good argument for a restaurant that isn't prepared for guests.

Overall OK, although not worth the price. In the future, please ask proactively how you want your meat and don't just assume it's rare. The beef fillet tasted great, but without any questions it was simply served rare, i.e. more or less raw. At 170 euros for 3 people I would expect to be picked up here.

Favorite Italian of our friend from Gelsenkirchen. It's a bit more elegant in my opinion. The food tasted excellent, both fish, meat and vegetarian dishes. The service was very nice. It was also very crowded, we made reservations a week in advance for Saturday evening. We were able to park for free on a side street without any problem. I really liked it, I can only warmly recommend it!

For a long time I was looking for an Italian restaurant where everything was right. Both the food and the location. This is where everything comes together. The price of the food is a little more expensive, but I'm happy to pay that because everything else is good. However, it is always quite full, which means it can be a bit noisy and restless at times, so that should be taken into account when visiting. I would recommend a table reservation and a quick call the day before. It has already happened twice that my reservation was not in the book.

Yesterday I was invited to dinner at Hugo Trattoria Villa Italia because it was my birthday. I was very happy with everything! I had a starter soup and my main course was spaghetti with shrimp and other delicacies. It was very tasty and the service was very friendly. The sanitary facilities were very clean and tastefully equipped. If you would like to have a nice evening, visit Hugo!

We recently went there for dinner with a larger group. Unfortunately, the pre-ordered starters were initially forgotten and then given later. However, some main dishes were probably already prepared. At least all the pizzas we ordered were way too crispy. My comment that the dough could not be cut properly despite the cutlery with a serrated knife was unfortunately dismissed by the waiter, who said it was the sharpest knife they had. In order not to have to wait any longer for my food, I finished my crispy pizza. Both the repeated note to the waiter and finally when paying were not seriously taken into account. As the evening progressed, it became increasingly difficult to place drink orders because the waiter didn't stop by. Despite previous requests, card payments were once again not accepted. Any restaurant that only requires cash payment is not “uptodate” for whatever reason.

We were guests at the Hugo I restaurant for the first time today and we were thrilled. The staff was super friendly and always good for a casual chat; the food and wine were excellent. Rarely had better mussels! Contrary to what was often criticized in other reviews, we were warmly welcomed as “new customers” and served attentively, even alongside (prominent) regular customers. People who came later were served first. The store was full, there was hardly any room to move. You sit close to each other with strangers. The food wasn't bad, but the prices had become quite expensive and the portions were much smaller. Really too expensive for the atmosphere. The background noise was also very loud, plus the occasional bark from the little dog that was allowed to sit under the table. With the best will in the world, I can't understand why the store is still so busy. Probably a lot of regular guests, who of course also receive preferential treatment. As a new guest I wouldn't feel drawn to it a second time, unfortunately.

Super delicious food, great ambience especially when the weather is nice outside. Unfortunately, it took a long time to get the food, including the payment later, because the waiter in charge preferred to stand in the door and often had a long conversation with colleagues.

Almost everyone enjoyed the food and the service was friendly. Unfortunately, the Tuscany pizza was, in terms of taste, the worst I've ever eaten. The bottom was OK, but burned on the sides, which was still OK. Unfortunately, the pizza lacked a lot of spices and simply didn't taste like anything. The vegetables and tomato sauce simply didn't taste like anything, so there was a serious lack of salt and spices here.

Food was okay. Service borderline. Totally nice young man at the beginning, but we waited 20 minutes before we got a ticket. But it wasn't bad, we were relaxed. The starter came after the main course. The boss then came to pay, which left a bitter aftertaste for me. At the end there was a large bottle of water added to the bill, which I didn't notice until I got home. Nice atmosphere, with a lot of room for improvement.

We celebrated a birthday in this restaurant. We got a very good table where we sat centrally but undisturbed. The dishes we ordered came at the same time and were all very good. The service was attentive and unobtrusively quick. The short conversation with the boss further increased our trust and made us feel good. We will all definitely visit this restaurant again. The opportunity to sit outside on warm days is an absolutely perfect addition to the offer.

Celebrated a birthday in the beer garden with 14 people on a warm summer evening, in a very nice atmosphere, the pond in the beer garden with beautifully staged lighting contributed to this. The service was very accommodating, the different food ordered was served at the same time, top!!! Can absolutely recommend.

Unsorted waiters, flippant, long waiting time for the food to arrive, then, despite express instructions when ordering, one ingredient was used, pizzas were very carelessly topped. All in all unsatisfactory, and the dirty and greasy table surface added to that.

Yesterday, with over 30 degrees, it was a somewhat bumpy evening at Hugo. But one after anonther. We had an appointment there with a couple who were friends of ours, in what was probably the most beautiful beer garden in Gelsenkirchen. We realized that we didn't know most of the people in the service. Patron Rosario told us that today he had to mourn the loss of three regular employees and that of his partner. But instead of despairing, he pulled out all the stops to get staff for the evening from a friend and, on top of that, brought his sister from Dortmund, who doesn't know the restaurant industry. Accordingly, the employees were not familiar with the menu or the processes at Hugo. Instead of my salad I first got a pizza, there was no cutlery and some things took a little longer. Despite the bumpy process, we spent a lovely evening at Hugo, the quality of the food was good as always and the diverse service team did their best. The guests in the packed garden obviously understood the situation. Patron Rosario hardly noticed the stressful day; he showed his usual friendly disposition, always with a smile and a few words for the guest. Cheers!! He could have stuck his head in the sand and shut it down. But he didn't. We know why Hugo I is our favorite restaurant. People work here whose aim is to give their guests wonderful, enjoyable hours. The food was phenomenal and really tasty - we felt completely at home, especially since the waiters were very friendly and funny (kind regards to Frank). Although there was a lot going on, partly because of the many Taylor Swift fans, the atmosphere was exuberant, happy and cheerful. Particularly worth mentioning is the excellent wine we had. Lugano was a dream! We sat in the garden on the terrace, which made the lovely ambience perfect. All in all a successful evening! Thank you, Frank, for this great experience. We'll definitely be back!

The restaurant "HUGO I Trattoria Villa Italia" is a true pearl. The waiting time was pleasantly short and the service was extremely friendly and attentive. The dishes are not only delicious, but also artfully prepared. Particularly noteworthy was the sea bass, which was cooked to perfection and deliciously seasoned. The ambience is inviting and cozy, perfect for a relaxing evening. A clear recommendation for everyone who appreciates good Italian cuisine!

We were with seven women and were allowed to sit outside in the covered area. The ambience was very appealing and beautifully decorated. The service was rather mixed as we were neither allowed to eat at the same time (and given the small number of people) nor did the waiter come regularly as we would definitely have consumed more drinks. The food was fantastic, there was nothing missing, not even the small appetizer beforehand. We were very surprised by the lack of card payment, which is more than usual these days. Recommended for the palate and the eye, the service can be improved. We were there during the week and it was averagely busy.

Today we had dinner at Villa Italia with 5 people. The welcome was very friendly. The table was tastefully decorated. There is an appealing menu with many flavors. The food came quickly and looked really tasty. So delicious that we completely forgot to take pictures and grabbed them straight away. All dishes tasted very good - spagetti frutti di mare, pizzas from the daily menu. We will be back

When I asked if I could get the starter for two people for one, I was assured that I was his "girlfriend" so no problem. Unfortunately I had to pay the full price as an invoice. For a tomato soup, the starter for one person and mineral water more than 31 Euro. An expensive meal

We celebrated our daughter's confirmation there on June 2nd, 2024 with 20 people, we were allowed to bring our cakes and the decorations that our daughter had chosen there the day before, after a short discussion we were shown the room and how the starters would be provided and everything else was already discussed! When we got there on Sunday we were greeted very warmly, when we were brought into the room we were blown away, the tables were set up really well and the tables were beautifully decorated with decorations that blew our socks off, our daughter, our guests and we were totally thrilled!!!! We had great waiters Christoph and Hermann Christoph gave him a little help, but he didn't leave any of our guests' wishes unfulfilled. Thank you very much for that! The ambience and everything around it was a success for our daughter guests and we felt comfortable. We can recommend this restaurant with a clear conscience!!!

The food was great as always! No question, the kitchen is the strongest area but there is still a lot of room for improvement in the service. Sometimes I feel like the staff is hiding from their customers. You have to wait for everything. You can also talk to customers. Just say it when something crunches.
