The prices are outrageous! They're unrecognizable from 15 years ago! I say: No thanks!

Truly delicious food. A lovely ambiance with signs of time, but that doesn't detract from the experience. It's worth a visit.

The ambiance was great, but the service was a huge flop for the insane prices. You'd think twice about returning. I'm taking the time to write this longer review because after countless visits to Heiliggeist, we've decided never to spend money here again, let alone recommend it. The reason for this is the unforgettably poor service on our last visit (May 10, 2025, 6:15 p.m., 4 people), and it was the same waitress again. Situation: Among other things, we had ordered the schnitzel twice. When it was served, I asked our waitress if something had been changed because the cranberries were missing – they had always been included on our previous visits. She looked at me in horror and simply said, "That can't be right," nothing more... I repeated myself, "Strange, it was always included" (without ordering it). She then asked, "When was that?" ...I felt stupid being interrogated like this, but I explained that it was actually April 5th and even showed a photo of the food (and it was served that way on April 26th, too). Now comes the kicker: Despite this, she said again, "No. That can't be! You can order it for €1.50," but in such a tone! Wow! And disappeared from the table. And whether you believe my review or not: there's absolutely no embellishment to this story. I wish someone from management had noticed; it was like something out of a bad movie. The unfriendly, truly rude way she handled the whole situation left me and my guests speechless. According to the menu, a portion of cranberries actually costs €1.50 - apparently, it depends on the mood of the day whether they're simply served with it?! Regardless, professional and good service would have been to respond, "We normally charge xxx for one portion of cranberries, but I'd be happy to bring you two bowls." It's all in the tone of voice! Given the exorbitant prices for relatively small portions, I'm sure the Heiliggeist can afford to accommodate such a trivial request. It wasn't the first time I was served so utterly unfriendly by this very same waitress (unfortunately, I don't know her name—young, brunette, tall, and slim). She really gives the impression of being annoyed by everything and simply never smiles; you feel very unwelcome as a guest! When I pay €158 (4 dishes, a glass of wine, a lemonade, two spritzers), my understanding and patience eventually run out; these prices don't justify such outrageous service. Cheaper restaurants put more effort into it! I hate writing bad reviews but that lady managed to spoil our mood again - the management needs to take care of having better service staff, that's the least you expect from a place like this.

Heiliggeist in Mainz is an incredible place with a unique atmosphere. Located in a beautiful historic building, it combines impressive architecture with excellent food and great service. The menu offers a wonderful selection of traditional German dishes with a modern twist, and everything we tried was delicious. The staff was very friendly, attentive, and made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. Whether you’re stopping by for a casual meal or celebrating something special, Heiliggeist is absolutely worth a visit. Highly recommend!

Enjoyable evening in the Heiliggeist – culinary highlights in a special ambience Located right in the heart of Mainz, the Heiliggeist impresses not only with its impressive atmosphere, but also with its warm service and excellent cuisine. We were warmly welcomed and escorted straight to our table – the start of an all-round successful evening. The order was taken quickly and our food and drinks arrived pleasantly quickly. There were three of us and we chose roulade with asparagus, salad with cheese and Coq au Riesling - all of which tasted excellent and were beautifully presented. We also enjoyed a great Riesling from the Maximin Grünhaus winery, which accompanied the dishes perfectly. As a sweet finish, we treated ourselves to a crème brûlée, which was equally impressive. Particularly noteworthy is the attentive, friendly service, which further enriched the evening. The Heiliggeist is definitely a great address to spend an enjoyable evening with excellent cuisine in a stylish atmosphere - highly recommended!

All in all a successful evening with good food and a nice wine list.

A great restaurant/café in a historic ambience that is second to none. The waitresses have always been very friendly, even when we asked over the phone whether we could take our dog with us into the café area, a quiet corner was reserved. The food has always been delicious, but the prices are quite high... Probably also due to the location in the middle of the old town. Still one of my favorite places in Mainz, also for visitors to the city.

The food in the restaurant was really excellent! The taste of the “Filet Mignon” absolutely convinced me and I would go there again at any time. The side dishes are definitely a must to really fill you up. One small point of improvement: The meat could have been a bit warmer for my taste, but it was still lukewarm enough not to spoil the enjoyment. Despite this small detail, I would like to emphasize that this is a first-class address that I recommend 100%. The atmosphere and ambience were also very appealing, and the selection of dishes is varied and tastes of a high standard. The only point I would like to make is that our waitress seemed a little inexperienced. There were little misunderstandings here and there, but that wasn't a big deal and didn't significantly affect the overall impression. Finally, I can say: A wonderful restaurant that I would love to visit again!

Very nice atmosphere in a historic place. Excellent service. Unfortunately extremely loud. Celebrated my birthday there with several people. I guess I was unlucky with my steak... Tough! After complaining I got a new one... Also tough. The other dishes at the table were very good.

We had a voucher that we were given as a gift about 5-6 years ago. In the restaurant we were told that the voucher was only valid for three years, even though it didn't say anything on it. It's not about the money, we could spend an extra €50 on dinner, but they managed to spoil our mood a bit on our wedding day. I doubt we will go there again. The food was nothing special. The salmon was okay, but the black rice was too salty.

We had dinner there on Good Friday. There was a lot going on and a new menu was introduced. Accordingly, we had longer waiting times, but our waiter did an excellent job despite the stress, so we felt well looked after. With good service, other problems can be “magnified away”. The food was really very good, although the Wiener Schnitzel deserved a little more salt.

das teuerste wiener schnitzel, gleichzeitig eindeutig das schlechteste.(zum preis von 33,50€). die beilage wurde vergessen und auf rückfrage wurde für 2 bestellungen eine kleine schale pommes frites gereicht, “die man sich teilen könne“. zu guter letzt wurde auch noch falsch abgerechnet. es gibt in mainz zig restaurants wo das preis-leistungsverhältnis stimmt.

Essen ist einfach schlecht. Haben dem Heiliggeist wegen der wieder eingeführten Croustarde eine 2. Chance gegeben und wurden wieder sehr enttäuscht. Das hat nichts, aber gar nichts mit der Qualität von früher zu tun. Teig langweilig und fade, nicht knusprig. Belag langweilig mit viel zu viel zähem Käse drauf. Wirklich zum Abgewöhnen und das für 20 Eur. Aber es gibt Weine für 1380 Eur auf der Karte… hier passt einfach gar nichts mehr. Schade. Empfehlung an Tripadvisor: man müsste mal die Durchschnittsbewertung der letzten 1-2 Jahre anzeigen können. Im Prinzip ist es ein ganz anderes Restaurant.

We had a reservation and were not given alcohol as we were supposed to order mains first. We were supposed to order the main course first and then after 30-45 minutes we would be served an alcoholic drink. We were a group of 18 people who paid €80 for water. Be careful when making a reservation as alcohol is not served here. Please do not visit, thank you!

Wir waren rundum zufrieden. Die guten Bewertungen, die uns dorthin führten, können wir bestätigen. Im ehemaligen Heiliggeist-Spital kann man ein besonderes Ambiente erleben. Unsere Sorge es könnte durch die "Halle" sehr laut werden im Lokal, war unnötig. Das Lokal war aber auch nur ⅔ belegt. Der Service war sehr flott, freundlich und mit Augenzwinkern. Man hatte das Gefühl sie machen ihren Job gerne - das ist selten geworden. Die Speisenauswahl ist reichlich und abwechslungsreich. Die Portionen groß, wir waren mehr als satt mit Vorspeise und Hauptspeise. Auch die Getränke-Auswahl kann sich sehen lassen. Absolut empfehlenswert !

We were completely satisfied. We can confirm the good reviews that led us there. In the former Heiliggeist Hospital you can experience a special ambience. Our concern that the “hall” could make the restaurant very loud was unnecessary. But the restaurant was only ⅔ full. The service was very quick, friendly and with a wink. You had the feeling that they enjoyed their job - that has become rare. The choice of food is plentiful and varied. The portions were large, we were more than full with the starter and main course. The selection of drinks is also impressive. Absolutely recommended!

The atmosphere is something special. Due to a private party taking place at the same time, there was only a reduced menu and the staff was understandably in constant stress. I would have liked to have known that in advance. The food was very good and was praised by my foreign guests.

The food was truly excellent! Unfortunately, we had to wait an hour for it, but the quality made up for it. The service was super friendly, and the ambiance was very special. Due to the nature of the building, it's probably inevitable that it gets a bit noisy, but it was still a very pleasant experience. Highly recommended.

Disappointing service but good food Unfortunately, our visit was marked by very slow service. There was clearly a lack of staff on site and the waiters were not attentive and seemingly untrained to deal with complaints. When we pointed out to the manager that our food was served with a 20 minute delay between dishes, there was no apology - instead his demeanor came across as arrogant and overbearing. The food itself was really tasty, with a great combination of flavors. It's a shame that the poor service spoiled the experience. The atmosphere was generally harmonious, but the room seemed a bit cold, there was no background music, and the sound level was quite high. I hope that in the future more emphasis will be placed on trained staff and attentive service - the food deserves it.

A great restaurant with very good food. We celebrated our wedding anniversary here and had a great evening. The staff is also very nice and accommodating. The ambience is of course outstanding. Absolute recommendation!

High quality, delicious food in a special atmosphere

If you want to spend an all-round successful culinary evening, this is the right place for you!

Good cuisine, noisy environment. I find the significant price increase over the last three years irritating. Here is a receipt from October 2021, the salmon, for example, is around 50% more expensive. This cannot be explained by normal inflation.

Very nice restaurant in a historically very special building. The high ceilings and the large hall are really impressive, but unfortunately it was also very loud because the tables are very close together and there is a lot of reverberation in the building. Heating a room like this is definitely not easy either, which made it a bit uncomfortable. The service was friendly and quick. The food was very, very tasty, of a really high standard, but unfortunately it was served on cold plates, so it got cold quickly. Unfortunately only 3 stars because the prices are really high and you shouldn't get cold food there. Certainly a great restaurant for a special occasion, but there are also equally good alternatives at lower prices.

We just drank cocktails. The best bartender is James, he made the perfect cocktails and is a great funny person. Here you will definitely finish work on time. We had fun. Thanks

I chose this restaurant because of the ambience. Unfortunately the food was just mediocre. The roulades were very dry and the meat was a bit tough. It took 1.5 hours for the food to be served.

Were there with a dog. No water was provided for the dog (but we didn't ask). Food was super tasty. Drinks (soda, spritzer) were also delicious.

We had reserved a table two days before. They wanted to seat us at a table in the aisle in front of the bar. An emergency table - although less than half of the seats were occupied. After the implementation, we really enjoyed it, as we have for the last 17 years. Food perfect. Service friendly. So it's just a lack of tact.

Great food and great service by our waiter. Only feedback that we have is to add more options to the appetizer menu. The filet and the short ribs were perfect.

The food is waaaaay overpriced for the quality of what you actually get. And all of the cocktails we tried had a very off putting taste. In particular, I ordered an aperol sour, it tasted like chunks of lipstick. I was not wearing lipstick so idk what that was. I also ordered the lachs w risotto, and the risotto was so hard, tasted like undercooked rice…not like what risotto is supposed to be. Honestly, you are just paying to eat in a cool church type setting. I wouldn’t recommend.

Our service (a young gentleman in a white shirt) was excellent - professional, quick, friendly and helpful. The dishes were all very good, with decent portions and very good quality. The same applies to the regional and international wine selection. Points are deducted for the terrible telephone hotline, according to which the restaurant is closed, and for the online reservation service. After researching the website, we found a telephone connection to a person. I also had the wrong wine returned the second time I was served. This was brought back to the table. A no-go in this price range. Our actual waitress apologized afterwards, but in this price range that's simply not necessary and I was very embarrassed before my visit.

Als Restaurant und Bar ist der Heilig Geist in Mainz eine bekannte Adresse. Wir kamen von außerhalb und hatten das Glück, noch einen Tisch zu bekommen. Der Service war excellent - unser Gastgeber „Asaad“ war sehr aufmerksam - schnell und angenehm im Umgang. Seine Empfehlung hielten was sie versprachen. Wein und Speisen passten - wenn man am Rand sitzt ist das Ambiente auch sehr gemütlich. Alles in allem ein toller Abend - wir kommen ganz sicher in 2025 zurück!!!

Ich bin als Studentin gerne ins Heiligest gegangen. In den letzten Jahren war ich nur noch sporadisch da, weil ich die Speisekarte nicht mehr ansprechend fand. Es hatte sich lange Jahre nicht geändert. Vor einiger Zeit sind wir wieder mit Freunden hingegangen. Es war wirklich schön und die Speisen haben allen sehr geschmeckt. Dazu muss man sagen, dass die Preise enorm angezogen wurden. Ich bin gerne in dem Restaurant, ab einer gewissen Zeit wird der Geräuschpegel halt sehr laut. Das muss man mögen.

What can you say: The location is great, the service was super friendly and accommodating and the food tasted very, very good!

Always nice there. The ambience is simply unbeatable. The food was also very good. The Aperol Tower is always a highlight ;) ... Unfortunately we had to wait a long time for the food, but we attribute this to the Christmas business, because overall the service (we were there twice in one week) was very good and attentive and friendly. Maybe one more note: due to the vaulted structure of the restaurant, the acoustics can sometimes be strenuous... We therefore always take people with hearing aids or older people in the middle of the table... ;)

A lovely evening in a great atmosphere. We had. Ordered the goose 3 times which was very good. Unfortunately, the schnitzel and the two children's schnitzels were far too dry and the fries were lukewarm. The goose was worth the money, but at around 28 euros it wasn't worth it at all. Unfortunately the salad was also forgotten as a starter but the service was so nice that you can't blame her.

Not what it was anymore. Food average. Carelessly arranged, women's toilets are bad with broken lids and broken handles. Lives from tourists and companies and, last but not least, from its old reputation.

Wir waren immer begeistert vom HEILIGGEIST aber es ist mittlerweile leider nur noch Durchschnitt und Massenabfertigung. Gestern habe ich Freunde zu meinem Geburtstag eingeladen und wollte in einem schönen Ambiente bei gutem Essen und Trinken feiern. Leider war es sehr enttäuschend! Es fing an mit einer sehr überheblichen Platzanweiserin die uns den Eindruck vermittelte das wir dankbar sein dürfen, dass wir reservieren durften. Kein herzliches Willkommen sondern ein genervtes ins Pad schauen und losrennen zum Platz. Und dann wortloses Verschwinden. Okay wir waren ja zum essen dort aber auch da die Enttäuschung. Lieblos angerichtet, salzig und nicht den Preisen angemessen. Das Hirschgulasch wurde in einer Napfartigen Schüssel serviert das an IKEA erinnert. Ebenso die Nudeln und die Gans schwamm inklusive des Rotkrauts und dem Kloß in der Soße. Die Gläser für die Nichtalkoholischen Getränke sind abgenutzt und nicht mehr ansehnliche. Die Seltersflasche war angestoßen und hat ihre Splitter im Finger hinterlassen. Es wurde zwar angeboten die Flasche auszutauschen aber kein Wort der Entschuldigung. Dadurch kamen wir in den Genuss der Toiletten da der Splitter natürlich Spuren hinterließ und das Blut abgewaschen werden musste, wo sich die lieblosigkeit weiter fortsetzt. Kaputte Klodeckel , angerissen Spühlknopf. Alles in allem ein enttäuschenden Abend der nicht mehr an das gehobene Ambiente vergangener Tage erinnert. Außer die Preise die sind auf einem anderem Niveau.

We are from Montreal Canada, but have been here several times over the last twenty-five years. A very favorite establishment here in Mainz. The total experience is raving 10/10 every time. Consistency in everything seems to be the obvious secret, every outing, every meal has always been a very pleasurable and gastronomique experience!

I organized a large event with 140 people at the Heiliggeist and we received excellent care. The restaurant has a fantastic atmosphere and the service was very good. Unfortunately, the food we ordered (flying buffet) was sold out very quickly, but the kitchen and service team must be given credit for providing more food spontaneously and improvised. This is not a given. I can only recommend the Holy Spirit.

Thank you very much for this wonderful evening. Not only was the restaurant beautifully decorated for Christmas, the atmosphere and lighting were also fantastic. We had booked a romantic evening including a service package (white table setting, lots of tea lights, bottle of champagne & roses) and were shown to a very nice table. The service was incredible and we felt very warmly welcomed and looked after. The food was fantastic as always. The Riesling sparkling wine was wonderfully dry and delicious. The 11 roses were over 50cm long. So thank you very, very, very much for this wonderful evening. We'll be back!!

A wonderful evening spent with friends over delicious food. Everyone was thrilled and the attentive service rounded off the experience. The only complaint would be the noise level. This doesn't make entertaining at a table of 6 people easy.

Unfortunately it wore off when I ate. Compare the goose leg from before (two dumplings, breadcrumbs, chestnuts, baked apple, lots of sauce) with the one from today. Still costs 32 euros.

Magnificent place and atmosphere, out of the ordinary. Quite disappointed with the cuisine however, venison goulash with 3 small pieces and overcooked spaetzle served lukewarm. It’s a shame not to offer more quality German wines by the glass given what beautiful things can be done in the region.

Great atmosphere in an old church. It should be clear that it is relatively loud due to the location, but conversations are still possible without any problems. We had the homemade sourdough bread and the potato soup as starters and the venison goulash and the bread rolls with mushrooms. Everything was super delicious! Service was also very attentive, quick and very friendly. We would be happy to come back - and recommend the restaurant, especially if you prefer hearty dishes.

Wonderful service and the quality of the wines and food left nothing to be desired. However, one star deducted because the booking was incredibly complicated: there was no table to book using the telephone computer, you could use the internet portal to be put on the waiting list, which was confirmed about 30 minutes later, which made us very happy. When we arrived we noticed that there were around 10 free tables. We don't understand why the reservation was so complicated and time-consuming.

Yesterday I was accompanied to this restaurant for the first time and was thrilled by the ambience and atmosphere in this historic place. Unfortunately, my enthusiasm was severely dampened when the food arrived. I had venison goulash etc. and actually got a “children’s portion”. The quality was honestly excellent, but if I'm willing to pay a price of almost €30 for a dish like this, I want to be full. Because that is the primary reason for the visit. I don't want to (have to) order an additional desert to achieve this. Therefore, a significant point deduction for food. It's a shame, but that really disappointed me!
