Haus Töller in Köln

The food is standard fare, prices are completely exorbitant. I cannot recommend it. Cleanliness leaves much to be desired, especially the black mold in the kitchen.

A traditional Cologne-style brewery with a correspondingly typical atmosphere. The seating is very cramped, resulting in a very loud noise level. They serve Päffgen Kölsch, always promptly and cold. The pork schnitzel was huge, but nothing special in terms of taste. Our waiter was unfriendly, even by Cologne standards. As early as 10:45 p.m. (on a Saturday!!), we were informed that they wouldn't be tapping any more kegs and that we should pay, as the place was about to close. And this in a brewery!! That was definitely our last visit to Haus Töller!

Unfortunately, reservations are not possible. The man was incredibly unfriendly from the very beginning. I've never experienced anything like it. You'd think guests weren't welcome. No thanks.

As others have reported, I too was rather rudely asked what we colleagues do for a living when I made the phone reservation. Even after I replied that it didn't matter, they still insisted. The fact that we were coming from Bonn with a large group was met with clear disapproval (direct quote: "Cologne would be better!"). They simply didn't want our reservation, despite plenty of advance notice, and made that quite clear! Incredibly rude and dismissive behavior; I advise against visiting.

Last Thursday, a group of nine of us went to the Haus Töller restaurant in Cologne. We had booked well in advance, but were still seated in the very back of the dining room. Not only was it poorly heated, but it was also quite dirty. There were cobwebs on the lamps, etc. The atmosphere was unpleasant from the start. The service seemed completely overwhelmed: even ordering more Kölsch took forever. When we finally ordered, we were hit with another disappointment: some of us had come specifically for the pork knuckle – which was unavailable "due to goose season." This wasn't mentioned during the reservation process, nor was it clearly indicated anywhere. So we switched to schnitzel and ordered steak tartare as a starter. The chaos continued with the tartare: we had ordered salt and pepper, but it seemed like all the shakers were empty – even the coarse pepper mill. In the end, we had to borrow working salt and pepper from other tables. Despite asking several times, the plates and cutlery for the starter didn't arrive for about 10 minutes. For our main course, we ordered remoulade (€2 per small dish) – which also arrived considerably later, "because it had slipped to the back of the kitchen." Unfortunately, the overall impression worsened: A sign in the restroom dismisses all negative Google reviews as fake – this comes across as more off-putting than professional. Given the quality of the food, we deliberately left a small tip. Afterwards, the staff even called the person who had made the reservation to complain about us bringing our own ketchup/mayo (because they don't serve it) and about the tip. We went back inside and explained the situation in person – but they showed no understanding. The two stars are only because the food was tasty. Service, cleanliness, customer service, and organization were a complete disaster. Unfortunately, for a traditional Cologne restaurant, this is an absolute no-go.

With our main course, we also ordered remoulade (€2 per small dish) – which arrived much later, with the explanation that it had "slipped to the back of the kitchen." The schnitzels were then almost cold. The overall impression deteriorated even further: A sign in the restroom categorically denounces all negative Google reviews as fake – as a guest, this makes you feel attacked rather than taken seriously. Given our experience, we deliberately left a small tip when paying. Shortly afterward, the person who had made the reservation was contacted by the restaurant by phone to complain about the ketchup/mayonnaise packets we had brought ourselves (because they didn't offer them) and the tip. We then went back inside in person and explained the situation – there was no understanding whatsoever; on the contrary, we were verbally attacked. The two stars are solely because the food itself tasted good. In terms of service, cleanliness, customer service, and organization, the evening was a complete disappointment. Unfortunately, we cannot recommend this traditional Cologne establishment, and it's one less place we'll be visiting.

We waited almost two hours for our food after ordering. The food was a mixed bag (the herring in cream sauce was excellent, but the potatoes were rock hard). The waitress certainly isn't responsible for Cologne's restaurant crisis, but her demeanor and behavior didn't exactly help to end it. I definitely won't be going back.

We've been waiting for our food for three hours now – and that's absolutely unacceptable. We weren't informed of any delays, nor did anyone apologize or offer a solution. Such poor service is disappointing and certainly not what one should expect from a professional restaurant.

It's like stepping back in time. You feel like you've opened a time capsule. Everything's just like it was back then. Amazing. The waiter was a bit grumpy at first because we wanted separate lids. I understand, it's more work for him. But everyone in our group has different drinking habits. The food was delicious. We felt very comfortable.

I had an extremely bad experience at this restaurant. First, I sat at my table for about 40 minutes without a waiter approaching me – even though I tried several times to start a conversation, I was completely ignored. Eventually, I ordered a dish (over €20) which turned out to be absolutely inedible. It had an extremely strong smell and taste of cloves, and the food was full of clove pieces, making it impossible to eat. After taking one bite, I immediately told the waitress – she just walked away without saying a word. When it came time to pay, they charged me the full price for the totally inedible dish. When I explained the situation, they claimed it never happened and that I was making it up. They refused to offer even the smallest discount or apology. When I asked for the manager, the waitress first tried to convince me she was the manager herself. Eventually, I found an older man at the entrance. Instead of listening, he yelled at me, saying that maybe in “my country” this would be acceptable, but here they had the most famous restaurant in Cologne and could do whatever they want. Honestly, I have no idea how he decided that 620 reviews make his place “the most famous in Cologne.” For me: absolutely not recommended!

Disastrous treatment. If you try to reserve a table for seven people, you're immediately assumed to be planning a bachelor party. This happens several times, even if you've already clearly denied it.

A quaint brewery in the Südstadt district with truly delicious Päffgen-Kölsch and a schnitzel that's even more impressive with the word "huge." The taste was excellent, the schnitzel perfectly prepared – a bit too large for me personally; I would have preferred a smaller portion and a few more of the delicious fried potatoes. The atmosphere was typically lively, and the place was well-attended. The only downside: the very friendly waiter was visibly stressed; a bit more staff would have been welcome given the number of guests. Overall, though, a successful evening and highly recommended.

Never again! Half a chicken breast with a thin, inedible slice of cheese. Ham jelly tasted more like preservatives than ham. Potato and carrot mash was swimming in fat. Roast beef with fried potatoes was served on a plate too small, so I didn't feel full. The only positive thing was the good Päffgen Kölsch beer.

You won't find better schnitzels in Vienna. Excellent cuisine with dishes you won't find everywhere. I'll be back next time I'm in Cologne.

After 60 minutes still no order taken, but 3x Kölsch served

The portion was great, but the service was absolutely terrible. We had to wait 90 minutes for the food and at least 60 minutes for our order to be taken. Unfortunately, it was very disappointing. The service was typical Kölsch, but even then, it was unfriendly. I wouldn't recommend it as a brewery.

Great interior – really quaint. I liked the beer best of all – they have Päffgen on tap. Haus Toeller isn't suitable for vegetarians. They only offer a "vegetarian platter" upon request: the dumplings, a spoonful each of carrots and mashed potatoes (both a bit watery), and red cabbage – with a side salad 🤷‍♀️ There was no sauce – I could have ordered it for €5. The meat eaters were happier. We all thought the value for money wasn't good, though. I'd go back for the beer alone (but eat somewhere else).

I was at the restaurant on June 3, 2025. It was absolutely fantastic. I had a great meal and a couple of Kölsch beers (Päffgen 😋). The service was outstanding. With Nihat, you have someone who knows how to approach his customers openly and with a sense of humor. He really enjoys what he does, and it's very noticeable. It was a fantastic evening. A beautiful old brewery...great atmosphere. The rest is unfortunately very disappointing. We used to come here often, especially for the cutlets. Nobody knows why they were taken off the menu. We ate the knuckle of pork four times. Unfortunately, it's not good at all. It also seems to be cured like a smoked pork knuckle. Not like the usual knuckle of pork. The fried potatoes were soft, limp, and swimming in fat. Only the freshly brewed 'Päff' (a kind of 'pappy') on tap kept us in the shop. The menu urgently needs to be tweaked, and the cutlets need to be put back on the plate!!!

The older waiter, Markus, was rude and slow. He didn't check on me after the food was served. Unfriendly and dismissive. Schnitzel was quite dry and totally tasteless. Took forever to get additional wedge of lemon. I asked for the bill, he told me "24,50" and I gave him 30 euros right there. He walked away, assuming the rest for him. I went to ask him for my change, and he said, "Oh you're American, I thought it was the tip." I said no. "How much do you want back?" he asked. "5.50, I said," and he counted it out angrily and slammed it in my hand. Greedy, rude, sneaky. And the food was mediocre. Too bad because the place is full of charm.

It was our first time there. And it won't be the last! A truly great brewery atmosphere! Delicious Päffgen-Kölsch, and the beer was always on tap (thanks, Nihat). The waiter was quick, friendly, and extremely communicative. We had a good laugh with him. A small, fine menu. The food was excellent and truly homemade. You can tell by the fact that at Haus Töller, you have to wait a reasonable amount of time for it, and unlike other breweries, you don't get your plate within five minutes of ordering! Al final de la comida, el gerente masculino se negó a darnos tres recibos separados, para las bebidas en una, y las dos comidas en las otras dos. ¡Al parecer es la ley alemana! Y encima, al final de la comida nos dijeron que no aceptaban tarjetas de crédito o débito, solo efectivo. Al principio, no había aviso de esa expectativa. Así que no nos queda otra alternativa que ir al cajero automático al que nos dirigió el gerente, y como consecuencia terminamos gastando extra en el retiro del cajero automático que no esperábamos. Todo dentro de la ley, imagino, pero el desprecio por el cliente dice mucho. La comida estaba bien (bastante agradable en realidad) pero hay otros restaurantes en Colonia que le dará eso, además de la experiencia de hospitalidad alemana honesta que faltaba severamente en este establecimiento. Dicho esto, sin duda volveríamos a experimentar una vez más una experiencia tan increíble!

A quaint old inn in the middle of Cologne with freshly tapped Peters Kölsch and delicious food. There used to be a lot of pork chops with fried potatoes. Unfortunately that no longer exists. There are schnitzel and knuckles or chicken to fill you up. I had roast pork with fried potatoes and red cabbage. Very tasty BUT instead of slices of meat I had pulled pork and, as with all the other dishes, only a very manageable amount of fried potatoes. For €20 it's pretty borderline. A good atmosphere and nice people in the restaurant. The underground “Köbes” was a big drawback: slow, inattentive, unfriendly and not equipped with the charm of his other colleagues. In addition, you can only pay in cash 👎.

The staff is on their toes and you never have to wait long for your drinks. Food is also tasty and decent portions. The fact that you can only pay with cash and that card payments are not accepted is unacceptable and completely out of date.

Erneuter Besuch nach langer Zeit im Haus Töller. Preislich sind die Speisen spürbar in der oberen Liga angesiedelt, wobei deren Qualität aber auch stimmt. Die knusprige Haxe war innen zart, das geschälte Hämmchen stattlich und lecker. Beim Roastbeef mit Bratkartoffeln stimmten Geschmack der Bratkartoffeln und Gargrad des Fleischs; dass ein gemischter Salat dazu bestellt wurde, war ob der ausgelieferten Portionsgröße kein Fehler. Optisch und qualitativ heben sich die Speisen deutlich von dem ab, was einem in so manch anderem Kölner Traditionsbrauhaus aus deren Küchen zugemutet wird. Der Köbes war schon speziell. Er war gewiss keiner dieser Hauptschulabbrecher, die in manchen anderen Kölner Brauhäusern in ihrer Köbesuniform die Gäste bepöbeln und diese Flegeleien unter "Brauchtum" verbuchen. Nein, eher etwas introvertiert und recht behäbig- muss man mögen. Da die Tische sehr eng stehen, ergibt sich im Laufe des Abends ein sehr unangenehmer Lärmpegel und wenn eine größere Gruppe hinter einem ihren Platz einnimmt, kommt es auch schonmal zu Körperkontakt. Alles in allem hat es wieder gepasst. "Gut", nicht befriedigend".

All three of us ate chicken, delicious. the Köbes was quite grumpy but extremely fast (sometimes definitely too fast). The cell phone ringing from the man in the “confessional booth” was annoying. You have to ask yourself what kind of function this person has (just sat around and stared into his cell phone).

The Kölsch is great and the staff is very nice and friendly. The ambience is typical brewery. I wasn't happy with the food at all. Quite expensive and very small portions. There is no highlight in terms of taste. No comparison to e.g. B. Wirtz in Severinsveedel, where it's delicious and you really feel full. Conclusion: yes, for drinking beer, but not necessarily for anything else.

Traditional brewery where tradition is still valued. This is not a tourist bar but rather an insider tip where time stood still 100 years ago. Traditional Cologne cuisine that is very tasty and rich. A visit here is definitely worth it. But be careful to make a reservation on the weekend otherwise there is a very high chance that there will be no space left.

One of the best breweries in Cologne in my opinion. I used to be a regular guest and now I'm back there after a long break. And it was still as good as ever! Delicious knuckle and much more, delicious Kölsch. Reservation is advisable as it is understandably full during the usual peak times.

Was ich als Nicht-Kölner nicht verstehe, dass man mehr als nur seltsam angeguckt wird und man einen kaum intelligenten Spruch kassiert, weil man einfach kein Kölsch trinken möchte. Yesterday we had dinner with 6 people and I was a bit excited, also because of some of the not so good reviews (unfriendly, waiting time). I have to say everything was perfect for us. The service was quick and the Päffgen Kölsch was at the optimal temperature The waiting time for the meal was okay for us, as we were told beforehand. Considering how small the kitchen is, it was understandable. We found the taste of the food to be ok to delicious. However, one of our group didn't like it. He was offered another meal by the Köbes. When he said no, he wasn't charged for his meal. You rarely experience that. Hats off

BUT: In 2024 (!) you can only pay with cash, while even in developing countries mobile ice cream parlors accept credit cards. That gives a very shady impression, maybe the tax office should take a look?

Rustic restaurant with Cologne flair. Good home cooking. Really tasty. Can highly recommend.

Es como retroceder en el tiempo. Este lugar no ha cambiado mucho en los últimos cien años. El lugar es tradicional. El menú es tradicional. El método de pago es tradicional (solo efectivo). Los habituales son muy viejos. El staf es tradicional. Su kölch es tradicional (cerveza local tamizada en vasos de 20 cl y recargada regularmente, hasta que coloques el coster sobre tu vaso. No se han adaptado en absoluto, para adaptarse a los turistas. El servicio es un poco despreocupadamente arrogante, pero eso solo aumenta la experiencia. El menú es rústico y muy bien hecho. Esto es una visita obligada en un viaje de Colonia.

The food was very tasty 😋. The service also worked perfectly. The atmosphere is rustic. The toilet 🚽 could have been cleaner.

It’s a typical Kölsch brewery pub. Excellent service from the time we arrived throughout we left. The food was brilliant and the beer was superb.
