Haus Katenkreuz in Datteln

We went there for a Christmas meal with our family (11 people). We had called beforehand to discuss vegan and vegetarian options. We were assured that something would be prepared individually on-site. For the vegetarians, there was a Camembert salad, which was very meager for a "main course." The vegan option was the so-called "vegetable plate with boiled potatoes," which consisted of only three small potatoes, a few pieces of broccoli and cauliflower, and a small portion of carrots. It's perfectly understandable that there were no meat substitutes; that was clear from the start. But to then serve such a meager "main course" plate, which wasn't even nicely presented, was unacceptable. In general, the other portions weren't particularly large either, especially considering the price. Very disappointing.

We went there with our family (11 people) for Christmas dinner. The food was generally okay, but we had all expected more. The roulade was quite dry, and we didn't understand why it had a mushroom sauce. By far the best course was dessert. The ice cream with the gingerbread was very good, and the chocolate mousse was also delicious. Unfortunately, all the glasses were dirty, which shouldn't happen in a restaurant. The children's meal (nuggets, vegetables, and croquettes) must have been suggested by someone who doesn't have children. A third of the plate was covered with cauliflower, broccoli, and carrots—and that's exactly how the plates looked when all three kids returned them. Of course, vegetables are good for children, but that doesn't mean they'll eat much of them. The fact that there weren't any fries that day also showed that they weren't prepared for children. The waitstaff didn't know what was on the menu, which was very simple… There was one vegetarian dish, Camembert with salad – especially at Christmas, one would expect a bit more creativity.

We really enjoyed our stay. The food was delicious and the service was friendly. The menu was clear and tailored to the season. We don't need to discuss the prices. Restaurants aren't cheap, but when the food and service are good, it's perfectly acceptable.

A very warm welcome, I was immediately given a seat by the fireplace. The service was excellent and the dinner was very good.

Fast, efficient, and very friendly service, delicious food, the owner is the chef himself. Dogs are welcome too, you just need to let them know and make a reservation. We were there for dinner. Everything was excellent. The fish and the regional goulash were also highly commendable. Especially the Herrencreme! A specialty, not only in Münsterland, but also in this establishment! 👌 We'll be back.

The food was fantastic (venison goulash with dumplings and red cabbage, topped with pear and cranberry cream). The waiter was friendly, unobtrusive, and very attentive.

A nice restaurant with the charm of yesteryear—but not unpleasant. Friendly service, and the daily special (venison) was also available in a small portion, just the right size for a snack (available even after 3 p.m.). It tasted delicious.

The kitchen is ventilated into the dining room, and a door approximately 1.2 meters wide is permanently open. The dining room smells of deep-fryer oil, and so do our clothes, which is very unpleasant. My schnitzel smelled and tasted of oil, which is neither tasty nor healthy; a disappointment. We cannot recommend this restaurant.

We stopped in for dinner spontaneously. The waiter, who had already treated us very warmly on the phone, welcomed us in the same way. The small menu, in my opinion, is such that there's something for everyone. The waiter also gave us extensive information about the menu. It included changes due to the supplier bringing in a different type of fish, the option of getting the schnitzel with chanterelle mushrooms, and the spare ribs, which are not listed on the menu. The soup of the day, a tomato cream, was very well prepared! The consistency and seasoning were perfect for me. A fruity tomato flavor with a good acidity. My wife chose the hunter's schnitzel, and I had the last portion of the spare ribs. We were delighted with both, including the side dishes. The portions were very good, the meat was juicy and tender, and the waiter was super attentive. Although we were full, we asked for dessert. Here we were surprised by a classic Herrencreme (men's cream). As the only option, it turned out to be an absolute hit. Freshly prepared, with homemade chocolate coating, we hadn't expected. I can't say in retrospect whether rum or just flavoring was used, but the entire meal was excellent. I hope the restaurant, after a long slumber, will be well-received and we can spend many more evenings here! Unfortunately, I forgot to take any photos this time.

Classic German dishes in this traditional Datteln restaurant with a lovely beer garden. A nice Benedictine beer on tap is perfect after a bike ride through the Hardt valley. A young owner of the family business, and "our" Mr. Mencke, a loyal service partner. We'd love to come back, and please also try the homemade sheet cake!

We had a really good meal here after needing an alternative to Jammertal. At Katenkreuz, we ordered the daily special: trout meunière and spare ribs, followed by Herrencreme. It was delicious, freshly cooked, generous portions, and wonderfully friendly and professional service in a sophisticated atmosphere. Highly recommended 👍🏻

We passed by there on our bike tour. A very cozy beer garden invited us to rest, so we stopped there for lunch. The menu looked good, but we were persuaded to go for fresh trout. A good choice. A fresh wheat beer quickly restored our strength. We felt very comfortable and would gladly come back.

Highly recommended: In addition to a regular menu, there are fresh daily specials, such as trout, boiled beef, and various cakes. All in a cozy atmosphere both inside and in the shady beer garden with its mature trees. The service is excellent and pleasantly personal. We'll definitely be back.

We enjoyed a lovely outdoor seating area under old plane trees, which provided wonderful shade. The food was truly delicious, and the service was very friendly and prompt. The restaurant is located right next to a hiking parking lot in the Haard Mountains. It was closed for several years and reopened this year. We highly recommend a visit!

I highly recommend this restaurant. I knew it as a child and was disappointed when it closed. It has been open again since 2023. The 🍺 garden invites you to linger, and the food was good and tasty. The interior is reminiscent of the 70s. I like it. The service was friendly and polite. All in all, it was a successful meal.

We received very friendly service and had a nice seat in the beer garden, although it still needs some fine-tuning. The salad, fries, and meat were very good, but the sauce lacked a bit of zest. The drinks arrived quickly and were well chilled.

The restaurant is very well located for taking a walk in the Hardt before or after.

Great food. Very friendly and welcoming hosts. The inn is cozy and very clean. In an emergency (I was stuck with my birthday guests and had no place to go four hours before the party), they helped us out and provided us with delicious food and drinks. I am very, very grateful for that. I can only recommend this inn... just stop by and check it out.

On December 28th, 2024 I stopped at Haus Katenkreuz with a friend after a hike in the Haardt. We didn't know it before and decided based on the impression from the outside and the posted menu and we didn't regret it. The reception was very hospitable and nice, people were attentive and we ate good and tasty food (venison goulash and apple pie). While we were sitting, other guests arrived and they were also greeted and served very nicely. Nice end to a day in Haardt!

The Christmas goose was a taste explosion, the deer meat so tender that you could just crush it on the palate with your tongue. Mr. Engelkamp in the kitchen is a master of his craft!

Seasonal & regional products are very important here when used in the kitchen. The food is absolutely delicious and at a very good price/performance ratio. I also liked the family atmosphere with the good service. A nice insider tip on the edge of the Ruhr area... Please keep it up...I'm looking forward to the next visit.

Hello! We celebrated a family reunion with 30 people there and everyone was very happy. The hall was beautifully decorated [we had four large tables so that we could have a good conversation at the table]. Unfortunately the restaurant is closed until November due to a lack of staff, but the booked celebrations are still served very well. The food and also the homemade cake were super delicious!!! There are enough parking spaces available. Unfortunately the beautiful beer garden was not open, but we were able to sit on the back terrace and watch the cute little sheep, to the delight of the children (the owners are very child-friendly). So we had a great day at Haus Katenkreuz! Thank you very much!!!😀👍

Dollhouse with a feel-good character. Hey listen. You have taken over the ambience and maintain it until these times allow you to; to improve something for you. Everything has to grow first. But not the food! No additives from sachets. Here, very good home-style cooking is prepared from fresh ingredients that fills you up. What more could you want? Rounded off with warmth and accommodating. Here you are not just a guest, but a temporary “friend”, or more. Take a look

When we placed the order we were told what they did not have. There was also a large party so they forgot about us. There was no mention of any compensation, which is a pity.

Went to the restaurant for the first time today. The service was very nice and accommodating. You felt like a welcome guest at all times. The food was terrific. We had beef soup with egg custard as a starter, beef steak with herb butter as a main course, fried potatoes and asparagus with Hollandais sauce, and warm chocolate tart with cream for dessert. You could tell that everything was freshly prepared and tasted just perfect. The atmosphere is very cozy. If you like a good, home-style meal in a 160-year-old house with really great and friendly owners, this is the place for you. Therefore, 5 stars from us in all respects. We'd love to come back.

Really a great place to visit! Here you will find delicious food and drinks to fortify yourself. Whether it's crusts, currywurst or a homemade cake, there's something for everyone here! The nearby hiking car park makes it a great place to stop off after a lovely hike in the Die Haard nature conservation and local recreation area. We were here on Father's Day as a stopover on our hike.
