A truly traditional restaurant outside the city center, which we thought was worth a visit for dinner. Unfortunately for us—we wanted to try the famous breaded cutlet—it wasn't on the menu this evening, which only featured other traditional dishes (certainly very fresh). Before going, be sure to check out what's on offer (we only ordered one dish), and I also recommend making a reservation. The only downside—otherwise I would have given it a higher rating—is the €3 surcharge for card payments. I've never had this happen to me in Germany.

Quiet location in a typical Berlin residential area. Delicious food with a good selection. Relaxed and friendly service. Definitely worth a visit.

The best dining experience I have had in Berlin. Traditional German food in a cute location with tremendous service. Try the lager they brew in house; it's incredible. We had the goose and the pork knuckle: both were amazing. I highly recommend this establishment.

A true institution. A great neighborhood restaurant for many decades. We've only been here twice, but both times we were pleasantly surprised by the food and service. Absolutely lovely staff. They serve classics like goulash, pork knuckle, bratwurst, roasts, and sometimes schnitzel. The menu changes regularly, and the dishes usually have a little twist to stand out from the ordinary without distorting the classics. They have their own beer, and it's delicious! Inside, it's cozy and rustic, and in the summer you can also sit outside on the quiet street. We'll definitely be back (Warning: We'll be back!)

This tiny restaurant is exactly the German dining experience I wanted. The waiter explained the small menu to us, since it was written in German on the chalkboard outside. I had the pork loin special, which I still think about, and my friend had Schweinshaxe (pork knuckle). When I go back to Berlin, I'll go out of my way to eat here again!

Frank and Nils, the father-son duo, are truly inseparable. I was there alone and still felt completely comfortable and welcome. It's a small restaurant that definitely invites you to linger over another drink or two. The food is simply honest and homemade, and it tastes exactly like it. My absolute recommendation: the red cabbage. I don't think I've ever had such perfectly seasoned cabbage. Thanks again! I'll definitely be back. 🍷

Our second time here. A small quaint restaurant. Very cosy and serves amazing food. Their own brewed black beer is a must and pork knuckle is amazingly soft. We will definitely be back! Service is outstanding.

When we visited your restaurant, we were excited to try the pork knuckle based on the great Google reviews and the photo of a whole pork knuckle we saw. We showed the photo to the waiter (younger with long hair) to confirm our order, expecting to receive a whole pork knuckle as depicted. However, we were served only a portion, which was significantly smaller than what was shown in the photo. When we asked the waiter about this, he insisted it was the same portion and offered to place knuckle bones on the plate, which didn’t address our concern. He said “I am sorry but you can goto other restaurants but here”. We were disappointed as the dish didn’t match our expectations based on the photo. Could you clarify if the whole pork knuckle is available, or suggest how we can avoid this misunderstanding in the future? We’d love to enjoy the dish as advertised. The service attitude here is really bad, and the service quality is just average. This portion of pork knuckle costs €19.50, which is expensive but doesn’t match the quality. We went to Gasthaus Mutter Hoppe before, where the price is about the same, but the food and service were so much better—a world of difference!

Good food and good beer. Very friendly waiters. Two beers, two recommended dishes (venison and pork), and dessert: €72. I give the service a low rating because I don't think it's right to charge an extra €3 for paying by card. They should let you know before you sit down or put up a sign. But it detracts from the service, which isn't included, and they invite you to pay as a tip.

I highly recommend it. The food looked nothing like the pictures. I've never seen such a small portion of German pork knuckle. The bottom line is, it wasn't tasty at all!

Very nice atmosphere. We ate very well and the staff is very kind. I should point out that there was a mistake on the bill, we had a doubt and I asked the owner to check by email. He did so and admitted his mistake. I was reimbursed the difference. I wanted to emphasize his honesty; to err is human.

Everyone was phenomenal. We had the venison dish and the local brew. 10/10 The service was kind and helpful.

A family-friendly restaurant with a changing menu, the dishes are handwritten on a chalkboard at the door. The waiter (the owner's son) is super attentive and describes all the dishes available that day. The food is sensational! The meats were literally falling apart, very tasty. The beer he recommended was equally delicious. I highly recommend it!

A family run, German restaurant offering a small menu with approximately eight items. All cooked fresh with love that day. Oh my god the food is fantastic. We had venison, sausages, schnitzel and a new dish which was veal liver. The venison and liver dishes were unreal. Absolutely fantastic food and then strudel for pudding. The staff were so very friendly. I am so sorry I left going here until our the last night in Berlin. The next time I am in Berlin I will definitely come back for more fabulous food and great company. I can't recommend Hackethal's enough. It was the best meal we had in Berlin over the five days of our visit. Congratulations and thank you team Hackethal's.

Despite a reservation made by mail and confirmed by mail by the restaurant owner we arrived after 20 minutes walk and we found the restaurant closed. A small paper mentioning that the owner was sick… he could have taken the time to send a mail back to people who booked a table. This is clearly not acceptable.

A delightful eatery serving food from a small but delicious menu. The service was fantastic with super friendly and helpful multilingual staff. The atmosphere was exactly what we wanted, not too loud or busy but just enough. A dish each plus a drink or two each and a shared dessert due to the ample portion sizes came to just under 60 Euros. Would 10/10 recommend!

I want to write about the disrespectful attitude of the staff member. In fairness, the food and beer were great. But when the waiter brought the bill, he asked if I wanted to leave a tip. I declined (for me, prices in Germany are quite high, and there's no such option). The waiter then let out a very judgmental sigh and, after a pause, asked me what was wrong. He sounded very accusatory, and my mood and impression were ruined. I've been traveling for 25 years, have been to 40 countries, and have been to Germany 14 times. I've been to over 1,000 restaurants, and this is the first time I've experienced anything like this. I believe it's the customer's choice to tip. Judging the staff for not tipping is disrespectful to the customer. I'm very disappointed that this is possible in a restaurant with such high ratings and food of such quality.

A great shop that I always enjoy visiting! I would especially like to highlight the owners' service orientation, which makes this place so special. The food is also delicious, and the ambiance is very nice! The only downside: the prices make a visit a little special, and it's too expensive for me to become a regular neighborhood spot. But it's my decision whether I come back or not—and I'd love to come back.

We had reserved a table here three weeks in advance and traveled all the way from Lower Saxony. But then we unexpectedly discovered that the place was closed on that Friday. I have no idea what went wrong. What a shame.

We're repeat customers. It's an absolute insider tip and a gem in the middle of a residential neighborhood. The restaurant is run by father and son, and you'll experience excellent service in a unique and rustic atmosphere. Here you'll find our absolute favorite beer – the house beer, Hackethals Lager. The menu changes slightly each time. You can choose from typical German home cooking, and what can I say... We've never been disappointed. It's always been incredibly delicious. And we're always excited to see what awaits us next time. So if you want to experience a culinary highlight in Berlin, you absolutely have to stop by here.

It's a quaint little place where you feel at home. The service is old-school, but can also be polite to tourists. However, the price doesn't match the quality of the food, which is okay, but nowhere near as good as the prices would suggest.

Great place. Our server helped us through the menu and we had a great meal. The owner came over and was very friendly as well. Food and beer was top class. We’re from Canada so might be awhile until we’re back but if you are a tourist staying in the area, try this place for authentic German food.

Very good food but limited choice

Lived in Berlin 25 years ago and visited with my wife who wanted to experience authentic German gastronomy. So I asked one of my friends for recommendations and we praise him every night so far. But today, on our last evening he outdid himself. A very cosy place run by Nils and Frank Hackenthal who have an easy to navigate menu with the most traditional, authentic german dishes you can find: Bratwurst, Spaetzle, Eisbein, Rinderrouladen, Cordon Bleu. Doesn't get more German than that. Add the most refreshing beer we tried in our life and great desert and you'll have a night to remember. What made the evening even more pleasant were the Hackenthal boys: We didn't speak with Frank, but his art spoke for him, a superb chef who is also remarkably swift, and Nils. Nils took his time to explain the menu, gave us great advice, and thankfully insisted we tried two shots on the house at the end (I never drink shots, but boy oh boy was I happy he convinced me with his charming and honest smile). Nils you are wonderful, and thank you Frank for a great meal, you both have set a new benchmark.

A fantastic night of authentic German dining. Neils is a great laugh and had some great tips for the city. He also brilliantly explained all of the German dishes and made some great recommendations. It’s a great place to eat away from the tourist traps, would 100% recommend!

What a find! This little restaurant is tucked away round a corner of a residential street. The staff are so lovely and so good at their jobs! The food was divine - I just asked for what I wanted and was told how that would be served and the price. They spoke perfect English and were happy to do so as well, which made things much easier. 100% recommend.

I have to personally thank them for being just the nicest people to me during both my visits, I'll 100% be back the moment in Berlin again. We made a last minute decision to venture here for a meal to end our mini break and it was a decision well made. Serving traditional German/Berlin hearty meals with a chalkboard menu only written in German our waiter talked us through each dish and helped us with our order. We settled on veal meatballs and goulash then finishing off with apple strudel, and all were absolutely incredible, hearty and a big warm foodie hug on a plate. We loved our evening here so much and it will be one that we'll remember for a long time to come. If we are ever in Berlin, this will be one on the top of our list of restaurants to return to without the question. Thank you for delivering such wonderful atmosphere and culinary delights. Great service great food, what’s not to like?!

Was visiting Berlin for the first time and came across this nice pub not far from where I was staying. Usually I shy away from solo meals but I appreciated the kindness of the staff and also the nice and warm atmosphere. Was looking to try shweinshaxe but was pleasantly introduced to the local special, which was very tender, very big portioned and a new and refreshing taste. Great experience all in all, would love to visit again if I travel to the city once more.

This place is incredible. Pork knucle is super delicious, goulash is indisputably great and the service and staff are very helpful and friendly. When I finished my beer, the second beer from the bar came to me in the same second 😅🤣

It's very great here! Finally a real Berlin pub. There aren't that many of them anymore. The innkeeper gave us the best place and served us good Bohemian beer. Overall, the food was excellent. I recommend schnitzel and deer. And yes, you can also pay by card (EC/credit) here!! It does cost one thaler (1 EUR/3 EUR), but that's totally ok. Thank you, we'll be back!

Nice restaurant, quaint, promising. If you are a classic Berlin tourist, you will certainly find the food “so typically German”. But unfortunately there is no value for money here at all. 25 euros for a pork schnitzel and frozen fries? Margin maximization I hear you paraphrasing. Best business idea, however: Earn margin on tourists/customers through extortionate fees for card payments: EUR 3 for the option of paying via card. Smart, but the opposite of customer-centric or modern. It's 2025, not 1970. People are proven to spend more money when using card payments. That this even needs to be mentioned. Unfortunately, that is truly “so typically German”. As a guest you feel so obviously “milked”. But the service and the ambience are great, you have to admit that. So of course there was still a decent tip. As a tourist: you can do it As a Berliner: nope.
