Groben Gottlieb in Halle (Saale)

Visited this restaurant on Saturday at 8:45 p.m. The restaurant was 60-70% full. There was no food available at this time. The waitress wearing a mask apparently didn't have any seats for us (66, 68) at any of the tables. We were told to sit on wobbly stools facing the wall, which we refused. Although customers were leaving the restaurant at the same time and more seats were becoming available, the man wearing a mask again refused to allow us to sit at a regular table. We then left the restaurant in protest and found very good food and drinks at the next restaurant right next door. Is this normal there?

Saturday, October 18, 2025, 8:45 p.m. 1. No food 2. Restaurant 60% full 3. Very rude service with masks 4. Only offered us (we're 67 years old) seats on stools in the side area with a threshold. 4. The masked man told us we should sit on the wobbly stools facing the wall, as there were no other seats available. 5. Our view: there were at least two seats available for us at every table, but not for the man wearing a mask. 6. We then left the restaurant and found space, food, drinks, and friendliness next door in the restaurant.

The restaurant is quite nice and the food quite good (nothing special), but the staff were superficial, impatient, and at times even arrogant toward my lovely companions, who took a few extra minutes to order. You go to a restaurant to have a pleasant experience! Not just to fill your stomach. After all, the relationship between staff and guests is a cornerstone of the restaurant industry!

The food is truly delicious, and the staff is very friendly and attentive. We'll definitely be back.

When the restaurant opened in 1896, there was still the "Groben Gottlieb," who entertained his guests in a curious way with his rustic demeanor. The atmosphere here is still rustic: The menu features hearty dishes from local regions, each one more delicious than the last. The problem: Everything is described in pure Saxon dialect, which can leave out-of-town guests reeling. No problem: All they have to do is contact the landlady, who isn't at all rude, and ask what "Hinne" means. And they'll find themselves in lively conversation with the locals. Enjoy the hearty meal, pair it with a strong beer or a wonderful white wine from the Saale/Unstrut wine region, and you'll be happy. We sat outside in the summer weather and looked out at the grand Renaissance houses. A very rustic ambiance awaits guests inside, too – everything is extremely cozy. We felt very comfortable here and can only recommend this "Center for Saxon Food Culture" to everyone!

Unfortunately, I was completely disappointed today. Previous visits have always been a pleasure, but I will avoid the restaurant in the future, as there are simply enough options nearby. My experience was this: 5 minutes after the restaurant officially opened, an employee of the restaurant came outside. He then removed the chain from the tables, wiped them down, and watered the flowers. He walked past me five times without saying a word. It seemed difficult for him to formulate something like, "Good afternoon, please be patient for a moment. I'll be with you as soon as possible. Would you like to sit down?" He was apparently unaware that the young man's salary is generated, among other things, by customer sales. When I then entered the restaurant at 11:20 a.m. (I was still being ignored outside) and gave him some objective feedback, he shifted the blame onto me, saying I could have spoken up. I politely explained to him that I didn't want to distract him from his work. To which he replied that it wasn't the best way to start a conversation. But if I'd waited until he approached his customers as a service provider, I would have had to wait for his cell phone battery to run out. Thankfully, I've rarely encountered such unmotivated service staff. But unfortunately, the restaurant now has that stigma in my eyes because of the employee's behavior. As the owner of the restaurant, I might think twice about whether it's beneficial in the long run to finance such staff. Needless to say, I left the restaurant after his unreasonable response. My money will be accepted elsewhere.

Wir waren im „Zum groben Gottlieb“ und hatten zwei Riesenschnitzel mit Champignons und Salat. Die Atmosphäre war urig und gemütlich, genau richtig für einen entspannten Abend. Die Bedienung war sehr freundlich, das Essen kam schnell und war von guter Qualität. Die Portionen waren groß und der Preis absolut fair – das Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis stimmt! Besonders angenehm: Kartenzahlung war möglich. Ein kleiner Verbesserungsvorschlag: Eine Soße zu den Champignons würde das Gericht noch abrunden. Ansonsten können wir das Restaurant uneingeschränkt empfehlen!

Food good, prices (for drinks) a disgrace. 0.4l soft drinks €6.40 .. Such prices are not charged in higher-class restaurants or, for example, in Apresski bars in Austria. Absolutely incomprehensible. Food prices are expensive but fair. The food is good and a lot! Packing up leftover food then costs another €1.2. Conclusion: I would come back for the food at any time, but the pricing policy surrounding the food leaves a bad aftertaste. Which significantly reduces the desire to come back.

At Grosse Gottlieb there are rustic dishes, plentiful and expertly prepared. Except for the fried potatoes! They weren't fresh, but warmed up - so not crispy at all, but shiny with fat. It's a shame, because someone had prepared it beautifully.

After an appointment in Halle / Saale, I wanted to eat something regional before the longer journey back. To be honest, the name put me off a bit. But that was all unfounded. Inside it is very interesting and not everyday furnishings, but quite convincing and very comfortable. The innkeeper (a young man) initially explained to me somewhat listlessly what regional food was available here. But then he got going, into details and also raved about his own kitchen. Maybe he thought that that wasn't what I meant with my questions. The food was very good, so good that I have already been to the restaurant again in the meantime and will visit it again at my next appointment in Halle / Saale. Thank you very much for the pleasant stay in your restaurant.

Unfortunately, the service hardly understands German - for example, you want to order Worcestershire sauce and the waitress then asks if she should take a photo 😅 The spiced meat is more reminiscent of a fricassee...large, dry chicken cubes...far away from the classic GDR spiced meat. Portions and prices match and the atmosphere is cozy/rustic.

We have known Groben Gottlieb for many years and it is always a pleasure to have been there, in every respect, of course the food is the top priority but the service is not forgotten. Definitely coming .. AGAIN.....

It's really annoying that as a restaurateur you can't even manage to keep your internet presence up to date. After 9 hours of driving we wanted something to eat and walked past three open restaurants to get here only to realize that the place was closed even though according to the internet it was supposed to be open for another two hours. Unfortunately it is now too late to visit another restaurant. Thank you for nothing.

Great food, very disappointed by the staff. I think this sums up our visit Best together. The waitress was very nice and unfortunately only had some difficulties taking the order due to language difficulties, but this wasn't a problem as another employee corrected it and we received our drinks quickly. At first we were not greeted very nicely by the employee with the words “If you can read, please look at the sign”. To explain, we reserved a table and said so when we arrived and the table was assigned to us. Unfortunately it wasn't possible to get a children's portion of any dish, but it was good. Food was delicious and the portions were very large. Unfortunately, all dishes were too salty for our tastes. The billing was also very emotionless and you didn't get a “thank you, goodbye or have a nice day.” You had the feeling that the waiter/employee was unfortunately very annoyed because of the other waitress's language barrier and this was clearly noticeable. Of course, this is just a guess, but unfortunately it wasn't very customer-friendly and doesn't exactly invite you to come back. A pity. Otherwise the ambience outside was quite nice. We took what was left of our leftovers with us. We said that the leftovers, except for the pancakes, can be packed up. (we had an egg tart and savory dishes with meat) When we opened the container we saw that even the egg tart with apple sauce was between the meat lay.

Essen super vom Personal sehr enttäuscht. Dies fasst glaube ich unseren Besuch am Besten zusammen. Die Kellnerin war sehr nett und hatte leider nur einige Schwierigkeiten beim Aufnehmen der Bestellung aufgrund von sprachlichen Schwierigkeiten, was allerdings kein Problem darstellte, da es ein anderer Mitarbeiter korrigierte und wir schnell unsere Getränke erhalten haben. Zunächst wurden wir aber von dem Mitarbeiter nicht gerade sehr nett mit den Worten „können Sie lesen, dann schauen sie sich bitte mal das Schild an“ begrüßt. Zur Erklärung wir haben einen Tisch reserviert und hatten das auch bei Ankunft so gesagt und uns wurde der Tisch zugewiesen. Leider war es auch nicht möglich eine Kinderportion von irgendeinem Gericht zu bekommen, aber gut. Essen war lecker und die Portionen waren sehr groß. Leider für unsere Geschmäcker alle Gerichte zu salzig. Die Abrechnung war auch sehr emotionslos und man hat weder ein „Danke, Tschüß oder einen schönen Tag noch“ bekommen. Man hatte das Gefühl, dass der Kellner/Mitarbeiter wegen der Sprachbarrieren der anderen Kellnerin leider sehr genervt war und dies hat man auch deutlich gemerkt. Dies ist natürlich nur eine Vermutung, aber war leider nicht sehr kundenfreundlich und lädt nicht gerade zum Wiederkommen ein. Schade. Ansonsten war das Ambiente draußen ganz schön. Wir haben die Resten unserer Reste mitgenommen. Wir hatten gesagt, dass die Reste, bis auf den Eierkuchen zusammengepackt werden können. (wir hatten einen Eierkuchen und herzhafte Gerichte mit Fleisch) Beim Öffnen des Behältnisses haben wir gesehen, dass sogar der Eierkuchen mit Apfelmus zwischen dem Fleisch lag.

A very attractive traditional tavern atmosphere. I had a delicious meal, one of the house specialties (sorry I don’t remember the name), a stew-like dish so plentiful that the leftovers made a second meal for me later. It took quite a long time to get my food, but it was worth the wait.

The food was very tasty and everyone found something that suited them despite their different tastes. Service was very friendly. Unfortunately there are only very small non-alcoholic drinks (0.2-0.25ml) on the menu.

We were there for dinner and ordered various dishes. The restaurant was moderately busy and the preparation time took a little over an hour. The schnitzel wasn't really pounded thin, so it was really thick in some places and was therefore sometimes tough and dry. We were a bit disappointed because the dish wasn't a bargain at €24. The other dishes were top. Service was okay and so was the ambience.

Were there for the first time, reserved a table on April 13, 2024 without any problems, the reception was warm, the atmosphere was great, the service was great, and the food was very tasty and plentiful, I can only recommend it if we're in the area again will be happy to take a look again,

There's nothing to complain about when it comes to beer, unfortunately the food was disappointing and completely overpriced. (I had a crustless salt-crusted roast with beans and potatoes, carelessly thrown onto a plate for > €20!)

Ich hatte Rostbrãtl mit Bratkartoffeln und reichlich Zwiebel & Grünzeug, das auch mit einer leichten Joghurt Sauce abgeschmeckt war. Und mein Begleiter hatte Rostbratwurst mit Kartoffelbrei und Sauerkraut, ebenfalls deftig und lecker 👍❤️. Mit solch positiven Überraschungen wird man nur beglückt wenn man mal durch Straßen oder Wege schlendert, die man noch nicht kennt. Dankeschön an das geniale Team dieser Gaststätte...👍👍❤️
