Great Wall in Köln

I do not usually leave reviews, but my experience here warrants one. While I initially offered constructive criticism regarding the food quality and atmosphere - which I was invited to share - it was met with hostility. The management became argumentative and resorted to petty behaviour rather than addressing the feedback. Regardless of any future changes the restaurant makes, it does not change the unpleasantness I experienced. While the initial issues might have deserved three stars, the management's decision to double down and argue with a customer drops the score significantly. One star is the lowest rating possible, which is still more generous than this establishment deserves.

This place is seriously so delicious😍😍😍 The two of us ordered 4 dishes and every single one was delicious!! Everything was so delicious that I wanted to take it home ㅜㅜㅜ

Authentic Chinese food. We ordered spring rolls, wonton soup, and tripe as appetizers, and mapo tofu, crispy duck, chicken kung bao, and eggplant as main courses. Everything was delicious! Drink prices were on the higher side.

My husband is actually a very good cook himself and therefore very picky when it comes to food, so it’s really rare for him to praise a restaurant. But here, he genuinely said that every single dish was good. The Shuizhu Pork (水煮肉片) was especially outstanding — the mala chili oil aroma was incredibly fragrant and authentic. We ordered quite a lot of dishes. I was even trying to lose weight and planned not to eat rice, but in the end I couldn’t resist at all 😂 The owner kindly told us we could take leftovers home if we couldn’t finish, but honestly… we finished everything, haha! Highly recommended to everyone visiting Cologne — this place is absolutely worth it. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The menu is clearly laid out, making it easy for even less experienced diners to navigate and try new dishes. In terms of taste, the restaurant stands out significantly from typical Asian fast-food joints: nothing is adapted to European palates – and that's precisely what makes it so appealing. The flavors are intense, complex, and sometimes surprising, but always balanced and incredibly flavorful. This might take a bit of an adjustment for European diners, but anyone open to authentic cuisine will be thoroughly satisfied. The opportunity to discover new dishes is particularly noteworthy – it's worth being adventurous! The ingredients are diverse, the preparation is spot on, and the entire team ensures a thoroughly pleasant visit.

Fantastic food, portions are big enough, taste is excellent

Our trip was completely ruined. The only positive was that the food arrived really quickly. I think that's about it. Now for the downsides: First, I would recommend that the staff of this "restaurant" turn up the heat every now and then, as it was freezing inside. It was "a bit" uncomfortable having to sit and eat in our jackets. Next, I have to say that the waitress urgently needs to attend a German course because every time we spoke to her, she had to call a colleague. The "funniest" thing, however, was that we got food poisoning after visiting this dive. Headaches, fever, vomiting, and diarrhea—the whole nine yards. If you don't want to spend a day in bed, I recommend you avoid this place.

The Chinese restaurant 'Great Wall' likely gets its name from the Great Wall of China and the fact that it's located, so to speak, above Cologne's former Roman city wall. In any case, you'll find very authentic Chinese Szechuan, Huaiyang, and Hunan cuisine here, featuring lots of offal, duck blood, duck tongues... it's nothing like the "Chinese" restaurants you usually find in Germany. We had (in order of the photos) duck tongues, tea tree mushrooms with pork belly, lamb with cumin and chili, and frog legs Szechuan style, all very good. There's also a small but excellent wine list with fair prices. The (English-speaking) service was very friendly. It was a wonderful experience to encounter a piece of China in the heart of historic Cologne, practically in the shadow of the cathedral. Highly recommended if you're curious and open to this culinary culture. - Only 4 stars for the ambiance because, due to renovations, access is only possible via (for me, difficult) stairs.

An okey restaurant. The food is good, but relatively expensive for what you get. The service is meagre, where you need to pay extra for each small bit of rice for each person.

This is absolutely the best braised beef brisket with radish I've ever had in Europe. It was amazing! I even ate three big bowls of rice with it.

The food here is delicious. For Chinese tourists from all over the world, if you're craving rice, you absolutely must eat here. It's very close to the cathedral. It's only a 300-meter walk.

We were looking for a spot of Asian cuisine and, almost by chance, we stumbled upon this place. We arrived a little late, but we were greeted with a smile and prompt service. The dishes arrived promptly: the fish, fresh and full of flavor; the dumplings, so tender they almost fell apart. Amidst friends, laughter, and cold beers, the evening ended up being one of those simple evenings fondly remembered.

The older woman serving was very impolite. While we were odering, she burped and before collecting our plates was blowing her nose on front of us. The food was good.

Today was our first visit to what is supposedly the most authentic Chinese restaurant in Cologne. Sure, we didn't dare much and opted for beef, squid, and tofu with bacon. Authenticity? The sauces for the appetizers came from the supermarket shelf. The spice levels of the dishes seem arbitrary. While my beef, which was rated as spicy, was rather mild, the equally rated squid came across as very spicy. It also had a fishy flavor. The beef was tasty, but only offered chilies and fresh coriander. The service was friendly but inattentive. You had to clearly call for attention to be served. The ambiance is uncomfortable at best. Conclusion: Okay, but I'll only come back, if at all, because of the good location near the main train station.

We happened to stop in on our way to the train station, and it was the best culinary discovery we've had in ages! The food was incredibly delicious and varied! My highlight was the baked eggplant. The very friendly and attentive service made the visit perfect.

We visit the restaurant regularly and can only confirm that it serves 100% authentic Chinese cuisine. We don't know of any comparable establishment in the region, even though there are supposedly Asian restaurants on every corner. A top recommendation if you want to delve into the world of Asian, especially Chinese, cuisine. We wish the team continued success!

The dishes are very authentic and the presentation is good, but the price-performance ratio is not high compared to other Chinese restaurants I have visited in Germany.

I ordered the Peking Duck menu (E02) today at 5:20 p.m., first of all the waitress was not very friendly, then the dish came where the duck was soft and limp instead of crispy, after about 20 minutes I asked for some more vegetables, batter and sauce for the rolls, but the waitress said in a very unfriendly tone that it would cost extra, I can not recommend this way of doing things here, also not because of the quality or taste of the food!!

The price is high, rice is charged separately. There are not many dishes. I asked the waiter to order a little spicy, but the dishes were still spicy. There is no service and I am forced to tip. I will never come back here again.

Absolutely fantastic Chinese cuisine—but authentic and not what is usually served as 'Chinese food' in Germany. The very friendly staff will point out if something is unusual for European tastes or perhaps too spicy. We've been there four times now and always had something different. Everything was delicious. We particularly liked the lamb with spring onions, the beef with spring onions, the Shanghai duck, and the Hunan pork. The appetizers were also first-class: pork stomach, duck tongue, spicy beef, Chinese steamed dumplings... everything was excellent. The extremely friendly staff and the lightning-fast service deserve special mention! We'd be happy to go back again!

Food was great - in addition to classic asian dishes they offer very traditional dishes which you do not get in every asian restaurant. Service was fast and kind.

At the Great Wall, you can enjoy traditional Chinese food. I opted for noodles with sesame paste – they were very good and, to my taste, had a pleasant spiciness (2/3 red dots). The noise level was a bit loud, as the seating area downstairs is rather small – but this will vary depending on the guest. The service was very friendly, and we would definitely return.

Just a restaurant near a tourist attraction, when you pay with a card, they ask for a tip without any thought to service.

An exciting, totally authentic restaurant with seemingly typical Chinese dishes. Here, you won't get what local palates are used to from the Thai joint around the corner. Here, the food tastes like it really does in the Middle Kingdom. You can't be squeamish about the spice - but if you love German spice, you should still start moderately. There's a long line at the entrance during peak times, so reservations are definitely recommended. It's quite possible that after your meal, you'll be told – definitely not in a roundabout way! – that the next guests are already waiting for your table. Oh well. All in all, definitely a hotspot in Cologne!

Wiederbesuch nach langer Zeit. Der Laden ist schnörkellos und nach wie vor gut. Keine Tischdecken, keine Winkekatzen und kein üblicher Kokolores. Dafür kommt die überwiegende Mehrzahl der Gäste aus dem asiatischen Raum, was bekanntermaßen für die Authentizität der Küche spricht. Ob man nun Eingeweide, Pansen oder Darm essen muss liegt bei jedem selbst. Aber auch die "europäischen" Gerichte schmecken sehr gut. € 3,-- für ein Kölsch sind gewiss nicht günstig; die Preise der (Haupt)Speisen liegen bei durchweg € 20,--.

Good food, authentic Chinese cuisine in terms of ingredients. The taste was absolutely fine, even with extravagant dishes like beef offal with duck blood or gizzard in chili oil. However, I would have expected a bit more than meats and offal cooked in chili and peppercorns. Everything tasted good, but I somehow missed that special kick of authentic Chinese cuisine.

The Great Wall in Cologne is a real insider tip for everyone who loves authentic Chinese cuisine! Although I have eaten Chinese food many times, I absolutely loved the food here - every dish tastes unique, fresh and incomparably delicious. The menu offers an impressively large selection, so there is something for every taste. Whether traditional dishes or unusual specialties - everything is lovingly prepared and tastes fantastic. The portions are very generous, so no one goes home hungry. I would also particularly like to highlight the friendly and attentive staff. The employees are always helpful, courteous and their warmth ensures a pleasant atmosphere. One thing is certain for me: I would love to come back and can only recommend everyone to try this great restaurant!

Very traditional Chinese cuisine. Apparently the shop is rarely visited by non-Chinese people as the lady only spoke Chinese and a bit of English. Food was tasty and plentiful. Unfortunately, the selection of vegetarian dishes is very limited and my vegetarian dish (something with eggplant) was a bit mono-thematically limited in taste because there were almost only eggplants on the plate.

They don't accept cards and ask for cash payment.

Hunan cuisine is delicious, but the price/performance ratio is average because the portion is small and not cheap. It’s a really small bowl. Don't order the pickled fish, it tastes terrible.

The portions are large, the chicken with saliva tastes very good, the boiled fish is not as spicy as expected, but the taste is very good and will not make it uncomfortable to go to the toilet the next day. The garlic baby cabbage is also amazing, full of minced garlic, and there are vermicelli at the bottom, which is a plus.

Mein Bruder erzählte mir, dass dies die Anlaufstation für Ex-Pads sei, die einen Aufenthalt in China gehabt haben und dass es hier authentische chinesische Küche gebe - Grund genug für mich, dorthin zu pilgern! Bei einer Verabredung mit einem Freund wurden wir aufs Angenehmste überrascht - es schmeckte wunderbar! Schade, dass ich so weit weg wohne, sonst würde diese Adresse flugs in die Essens-Standards integriert!

At last a Chinese restaurant with atypical dishes and regional specialties. I also celebrate that the spicy dishes were really that, spicy, and not this decaffeinated thing that "Europeans" usually do. I will be back for sure.

Nose to tail is the motto here and you notice that pretty quickly when you open the map. Various offal and dishes with beef blood are first and foremost on the menu. My colleagues wrinkled their noses and asked where I had dragged them to. But after the first bite, the complaining was quickly a thing of the past. Really tasty, unusual and above all authentic. Not a one-size-fits-all meal, as we unfortunately know from almost all other restaurants in the East. And yes, the menus are a bit sticky and the ambience is so-so, but the food makes up for it. However, I still have one tip to share. If there are a lot of Chinese people sitting in a restaurant, which was the case during our visit, and they are sensitive to eating noises such as slurping, smacking and belching, then it is better to wait before visiting. The purest cacophony 🥳 Otherwise, I can only recommend the “Great Wall”.
