Gaststätte "Zum Steigkopf" in Heppenheim (Bergstraße)

The patio heaters weren't turned on, even though several people were cold. We were told it was too expensive to turn them on. The food portion was very small for the price, and despite it being self-service, we had to wait forever. The server at the counter was incredibly unfriendly and clearly didn't care. Despite the pager, some food was forgotten, and we had to keep asking for it. We definitely won't be going back.

The food is very good. In summer, you can sit outside comfortably and sheltered under large parasols. The staff are very friendly. Prices are reasonable.

We're currently here with a group of almost 40 people. When we made the reservation, we were told we could sit outside in a kind of "barn/extension" which we could heat with patio heaters. After asking five times if someone could turn them on and no one came, we asked again if we could turn them on ourselves. "Well, go ahead and do it then," was the response. Both heaters ran out of gas, and when we asked about refilling the gas, the answer was, "Gas is expensive, it costs €80. How do you expect us to manage that? Who's going to pay for it?" Initially, we were told we'd be served outside; the waiter came to us once, but otherwise it was self-service. We've been here several times before, and it's always been great, but this will be the last time for a while. The staff doesn't seem to enjoy their jobs either; friendliness is definitely not their strong suit.

Group of 40 people in the annex! Service was a disaster – very unfriendly and overwhelmed! The food was mediocre at best! The promised patio heaters weren't set up despite several requests! When I asked about them, I was snapped at, told how I expected that, that a gas cylinder costs 80 euros, and who would pay that! It's clear the owner is complacent and doesn't need the business anymore! We used to be regulars, but that's completely over after today!!

Unfortunately, the time management was terrible. The service was awful and unfriendly. After waiting 15 minutes at the self-service window, we were finally allowed to place our order. Whenever we inquired, we kept getting the same answer: it will take a moment... A real shame.

A rustic restaurant in the forest with minor organizational issues. The food is home-style to simple. The hosts are friendly, and the location is beautiful.

The rump steaks are absolutely amazing, 10/10 value for money – the herb butter is definitely homemade and incredibly aromatic! The bread served with it (presumably sourdough) was extremely good, moist inside and crispy crust. All in all, especially considering the beautiful hiking trails, I highly recommend a visit.

We ate here after a baptism. The food was almost a disgrace. The salad was from a packet and tasted incredibly bitter. The chicken skin had a strange texture and was extremely greasy. The fries tasted of old grease. Absolutely not recommended!

We were out hiking in the Odenwald with the whole family – including a school-age child and a toddler. The day began with a leisurely walk along the mountain. The path is pleasant, offers beautiful nature, and plenty of opportunities for children to run around. Afterwards, we stopped at the restaurant. There are plenty of outdoor seating options, so you can relax even in good weather. Food is ordered and picked up directly at the restaurant – despite the high demand, our meal was ready within 20 minutes. It tasted really good and was freshly prepared. A particularly nice feature: next to the restaurant is a playground where you can always keep an eye on the children while you sit back and relax. Parking is a bit more difficult. There are only a few spaces directly at the top of the mountain. If you can't find a spot, you have to park a little further down and walk a bit. This isn't a problem during the day, but in the evening, the path through the forest in the dark without lighting can be a bit arduous. All in all, we are very satisfied. We've been coming here regularly for over 25 years—now in the third generation. For us, it's always a wonderful family outing, combining tradition with fond memories.

I spent a wonderful evening here, with delicious local food. The event with DJ Vossi was well-organized. The fire bowls and outdoor seating made it feel warm and cozy. I was completely satisfied. I also stopped by after a hike, but it's busy then, and the wait for food is a bit longer.

The food sucked. There is no service because it’s a self service kind of thing. I spent 18 euros on a “cordon bleu” schnitzel and I kid you not, I’ve had better cordon bleu frozen from a box from the grocery store. the croquettes they charge you 4 euro for I didn’t even eat them they were dry as hell. My wife had the hardest schnitzel we’ve ever had in all of Germany she didn’t even eat half of it because she couldn’t even cut the thing with the knife. So if you want to throw away your money on crappy food go for it. It was so bad we left and went to another restaurant so we could have some good German food.

It was the first time in years that I've been back to Steigkopf. I used to walk there often because the location in the forest is very beautiful and not too far from where I live. Unfortunately, the restaurant has taken a rather negative turn, at least as far as the food is concerned. The interiors are nicely modernized, and the outdoor area is lovely with the view and the location on the edge of the forest. Unfortunately, you don't get much for your money these days. I had the weekend special, the kettle goulash, and paid just under €18 for it. Unfortunately, the portion was so small that I would have needed another of the same size to feel full. Not even a whole handful of spaetzle and five equal pieces. I've never experienced a normal portion in a restaurant that didn't fill me up. At least the taste was good. The service was neutral, neither particularly friendly nor unfriendly, but it was also busy. The wait for the food was long; there was a mistake in one order, and the reaction to the notification was rather irritated. Unfortunately, it's no longer worth coming; I used to enjoy it there.

Great, this brings back memories of our Alpine vacation. The food was good, the restaurant is cozy and modern, and the service was friendly – ​​except for one lady who was as cheerful as twenty days of rain. So, for the first time, we didn't tip and deducted one star. Card payments accepted for a minimum of €10.

We've enjoyed going here for years, especially with the kids, as they can play and romp around freely in the wonderful outdoor area. Unfortunately, the prices seem to have increased and the portion sizes have decreased, which unfortunately doesn't reflect the quality. Since this is a self-service restaurant, I can't accept the argument about rising personnel costs here either. Nevertheless, it's recommended for families who don't have to watch every penny. We'll still come, but less often.

Beautifully located. However, the service was abysmal. It was really busy, but after waiting for an hour, my husband asked if our food had been forgotten. An employee replied, "This isn't McDonald's." I then asked the manager for a quick chat and told him that it was absolutely outrageous to treat guests like this. The lady, who was so abusive, stood there and interrupted me several times... There was no sign of any understanding. The manager herself seemed a bit overwhelmed by the situation and simply stated that it was very busy. The wait is one thing, but the rude treatment of guests is another. This lady is completely unsuitable for the restaurant industry; perhaps some training in appropriate behavior would help. The food was very good, but based on this experience, we will be moving our annual family gatherings elsewhere.

Despite the large crowds and the self-service, everything was well organized and the food was good.

A great restaurant for two-legged and four-legged friends. Nice and friendly staff. Great selection of food and drinks. The food was delicious and prepared quickly. There's a children's playground and a large lawn for playing and running around. Water bowls for the four-legged friends are also available. Great paths for walking and hiking. You can park right next to the restaurant and walk a circular route, or you can park in a nearby parking lot and then walk there. We will definitely be back.

We were at Steigkopf to celebrate a graduation and wanted to make a reservation in advance. We're still waiting for a response. When we called, we received confirmation that we'd already been booked, but a confirmation would have been helpful. The food wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either; however, the service was really unfriendly. It's a shame—we used to enjoy eating here.

Great location for hearty Odenwald food

The restaurant is located in the middle of the forest. There's a large playground, which is perfect for families with children. There are plenty of shaded spots, which makes the place very attractive in high temperatures. The portions are huge, and I have to honestly say, I haven't had such a delicious meal in a long time!!! I had meatloaf with fried potatoes and a small side salad, and it was simply fantastic! Many thanks to the entire team! You're amazing♡

The restaurant of my childhood. Every time you ordered, you'd go play in the woods and climb the hills. The food was always great, the service incredibly friendly, you could order anything you wanted, and you were never disappointed. The view over the entire valley was also beautiful.

The location is really nice - in the middle of the forest and with a playground, which is ideal for families with children. However, on the Sunday we visited, it was very busy and we had to wait over an hour (1 hour and 20 minutes) for our food. The quality of the food was okay, but not outstanding - but the prices are on the higher side.

The rump steak was top, the schnitzel variations were a flop. The schnitzels including cordon bleu give the impression that they are pre-made material from the freezer that is being cooked in the hairdresser. My recommendation: If you're looking for steak, then rump steak. The volume in the restaurant was unpleasantly loud and the reason for the "comfortable evening" being ended early. The reason for this was of course the guests, but that's how it's remembered. Of course, this could be completely different on another day.

Celebrated my husband's birthday in the fall. We invited 90 guests and celebrated under the pavilion. The organization was very chaotic and it was difficult to make firm arrangements in advance because it felt like no one really had time when we were there. We still decided to celebrate there because we had heard good things from friends and the food has a good reputation. Unfortunately, there were many obstacles and omissions during the preparation the day before and on the day of the festival and we had the feeling that no one was well prepared for our festival and that despite agreements, things were decided and carried out at very short notice. It seemed to us as if the restaurant had never held such a celebration before. This caused a lot of stress on our part. In retrospect, things went relatively well because the current staff tried very hard. However, we would no longer hold a celebration there under these circumstances. After our criticism, the boss was accommodating, but unfortunately the billing was still to our detriment. But we no longer had the nerve to discuss it. The positive thing was definitely the delicious and beautifully presented buffet, which we definitely want to mention here. However, the pavilion as a marquee urgently needs to be renewed. It rained in bad weather and it looks very bad too. A new pavilion would be better and some rent could be charged for it.

If you don't know it, you shouldn't expect much. On the whole, it's easy for people who hike there or want to treat themselves to a small meal. Small suggestion: an extra counter for serving drinks, separate from the food order, ensures less confusion for people picking up drinks, which sometimes get lost.

A nice excursion restaurant in the middle of the forest. There is plenty of seating, especially outside - even mostly covered. On weekends and public holidays it is better to make a reservation if you are traveling in a group - it is often really crowded in the evening, even in rainy weather. At the Steigkopf you get a large selection of solid German cuisine. The quality of the food is great and the prices are very reasonable. The employees are very nice and always helpful. There is a huge playground for the children, which is often used to play football.

Reservations must be made for the interior of the restaurant. But this does not apply to outdoor areas. There is no reservation! It is so wonderful there in the middle of nature. Despite the crowds, the food was quick and very tasty! We were outside and there is no service outside, only inside! I didn't think it was a bad thing that you had to get the food and drinks. That went pretty quickly! The owners have turned the restaurant into a gem. Very, very great and super cozy furnishings. Highly recommended!!! It's always a pleasure to come back!❤️

I always enjoyed coming here but today it was disastrous. Spätzle pan was completely burnt and not edible. I was totally disappointed that the kitchen released something like that. I brought the plate back and the young man just asked "What should I do now?" I'm upset and disappointed and won't be coming back.

We had dinner here on a sunny, warm Saturday with three generations (7 people). We had to park downstairs, about 1 km away, but at least most people were able to get out at the door. Outside we found a table under a kind of open marquee. The ordering was self-service: one window order, one window delivery, about 50m from our place. The food was convincing: the cooked cheese was great, as was the schnitzel, the fried potatoes and the apple cider. Everything was served to the output window at the same time - almost everything... I don't understand why a really good restaurant performance has to fail because of a side salad. First we had to prove with the receipt that the salad was actually missing and then it took around ten minutes to provide this side salad. There was no offer to bring the salad either; someone had to wait for it at the serving window the whole time. Meanwhile, the rest of the family sat in front of their mostly warm meals and waited for the missing family member.

Best destination for Kochkässchnitzel and the like in the upper Odenwald. Good climate with lots of forest outside. Large open space with self-service and normal prices. A lot of it is made in-house. Always good. It can get crowded on weekends.
