Super delicious, great service. We really enjoyed the Kaiserschmarn!

Unfortunately, we were very disappointed. Right from the start, we had to wait a very long time for our food, and the bill also took forever to arrive. During the entire visit, no one asked if we wanted anything else to drink – the service was generally disinterested and inattentive. The waitress's behavior towards my daughters was particularly unpleasant: When they – still children – politely asked for ketchup, they were told in a haughty tone that "there's no such thing here." This condescending attitude was completely inappropriate and further soured the visit. The food itself was lightly seasoned and tasted disappointing, especially considering the price. The value for money is completely out of this world. Furthermore, the restaurant was extremely loud, creating a rather unpleasant atmosphere. Overall, a very disappointing experience – we will definitely not be returning.

Today, February 9th, 2024, we went out to eat there again. It was great again! The service was extremely friendly and attentive. The gluten-free schnitzel was better than ever! Compliments to the chef!

From the reservation to the dessert, simply great!

The food was delicious, but we found the side dish portions (potato salad with the Wiener Schnitzel and potato and vegetable side dish with the Tafelspitz) to be too small. To feel full, we needed an additional starter or dessert. This made it correspondingly more expensive. The interior is attractively decorated, and when we were there (Saturday evening at 5:30 p.m.), there were only a few customers. It started to get busier around 6:30 p.m.

Terrible service! APPALLING! I was visiting Köln and heard they had the best Schnitzel. The food was indeed good but we had to wait to be seated (it was empty), waited to get the menu, waited be able to order, waited to be pay, waited waited waited. It really hurt the experience and I don’t think I am going back even though I liked the food.

We were there last week. The food was really good – compliments to the kitchen! Unfortunately, the service didn't live up to the standard you'd expect in this price range. We waited 20 minutes for the wine. The waitress seemed rather snotty at times. They didn't explain the dishes. We had to wait about 20 minutes between courses before we were even allowed to reorder anything. Paying also took another 25 minutes, even though the money was already on the table. I know that restaurateurs are having a tough time these days, and I'm sure the chef/owner is trying very hard. My suggestion: Please train the staff better so that the service matches the quality of the food and the price range. Hence the poor ranking, unfortunately, because I usually go to a brewery for this kind of service, pay only half the price, and still go home in a good mood.

A great restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating and a small menu featuring exceptional "MIDI" dishes. We had Austrian fried chicken. It tasted delicious and was beautifully presented. The service was competent and was able to answer our questions. The restaurant has a good wine list.

What a great idea! I visited Gasthaus Scherz for the first time with my wife. As the son of a butcher and a hobby chef, I like to try new things and often invite people to business lunches. EVERYTHING just fits here from A to Z! Great location, super professional and attentive service (thanks again to Lana), and then this meal. I'm so happy to find a restaurant today where I can get tongue and venison heart! Admittedly, I grew up with it and everyone should eat what they want, so here's my tip! - Definitely try it! - It doesn't always have to be fillet! These products couldn't be prepared any better! Dear Michael Scherz, please stick with it! - Word will get around, and you'll reap your success! And by the way, my wife's veal schnitzel was the best we've ever been served in a restaurant! Very pleasant outdoor environment, great service and delicious food.

The menu is rather small. The food was delicious, but I find the prices quite high. We had the Wiener Schnitzel for €37. The portion size was modest, so we weren't really full.

If you want Austrian food, this is a top-notch location. In addition to classics like Wiener Schnitzel with potato salad (which is a dream, by the way!), Backhendlsalat (fried chicken salad), or Tafelspitz (boiled beef), there's an ever-changing menu with newly interpreted dishes. The service is friendly, fast, and professional. The ambiance alone could use a bit of improvement. But the excellent cuisine makes up for a lot. In short: an absolute recommendation!

We went there because of Tim Raue's recommendation for the Gasthaus Scherz and the best Wiener Schnitzel in Germany. Right from the start, I got showered with beer because the waitress had tipped over her tray. She apologized profusely, as did her colleagues, and to make up for it, we all got a round of drinks. She didn't do it on purpose, so it's all good. The Wiener Schnitzel and salad are actually delicious. The beer garden is really nice, and the staff very friendly. If we're ever in Cologne again, we'll definitely come back.

Tim Raue declared the Wiener Schnitzel at Gasthaus Scherz the best in Germany. I haven't tried all of Germany's schnitzels, but the one served here was outstanding for me, too. And the rest of the restaurant experience matches that. The menu is extensive; I almost steered clear of the schnitzel and opted for the Tafelspitz, but not for long. You can tell that the cooking here is truly of a high standard, and nothing is out of the ordinary. The service is always there when you need it, but never intrusive. The selection of drinks also fits into the great overall picture, as does the pleasant atmosphere. I'm really looking forward to the next time – hoping that Tafelspitz will still be on the menu.

A warm welcome in an elegant atmosphere. Authentic, revisited Austrian cuisine. Attentive and friendly staff, attentive at all times but without pushing for consumption. Generous portions and absolutely everything was delicious. Excellent value for money! The restrooms are super clean and smell good.

Friendly service, the Kaiserschmarrn was excellent, as was the Tafelspitz. The Wiener was tasty, but it came from a deep fryer.

My expectations were high, and they were more than met. An incredible combination of ingredients! A true taste experience! The service is friendly and very attentive, and the ambiance on the terrace is very cozy, despite being located on a main road. Special mention should be made of: For those driving, there are various non-alcoholic alternatives to the regular cocktails. Allergens were checked! Overall, a high-quality meal with incredible creativity!!! We would love to come back. We are blown away!!! And since unfortunately, multiple reviews aren't possible, here's a follow-up to another visit in May '25: Service was excellent as always, extremely friendly, and planned renovations were explained to me out of interest. The Wiener Schnitzel... Tim Raue is right... I've never had such a beautifully souffléd dish anywhere in the area!!! Once again, the kitchen demonstrated that it knows its craft. The venison from the Maibock with celery mousseline and pointed cabbage was a poem. The cooking was perfect, incredibly tender, and the side dishes perfectly complemented it. Underneath, a very aromatic mousseline, with the full flavor of celery without overpowering the main character... I'm looking forward to my next visit!

Sunday afternoon in Cologne Sülz, there are few options for lunch or a late lunch. But Restaurant Scherz is open from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Wonderful Wiener schnitzel with a great potato and cucumber salad. Sensational cranberry jam. To go with it, a bottle of Veltliner. A little piece of Vienna in the heart of Cologne. Wonderful. We hope you keep going. 😀

Good schnitzel - service ok - but could be better

Really good service and a nice atmosphere. The portions could just be a bit larger for the prices.

We wanted to eat at Gasthaus Scherz today at 4:45 p.m. – spontaneously and without a reservation. The restaurant was completely empty both inside and out, which initially gave us hope. However, the friendly waitress explained that we could only keep our table until 5:30 p.m.; reservations would start arriving outside after 5 p.m., and the inside area would be "not served." Since we wanted to eat in peace, we decided against it and went to the neighboring Haus Unkelbach. We were somewhat confused when we returned at 5:50 p.m. and found that there were guests inside. Perhaps the plans had changed at short notice – that can happen. However, for outside guests, it seems contradictory. I would like to highlight the polite manner of the service staff and the welcoming ambiance. A clearly communicated concept regarding when and where service is provided would further enhance the first impression and provide more orientation for spontaneous visitors. We would gladly give Gasthaus Scherz another chance at a later date.

Great food, best schnitzel in Cologne, nice team, absolutely recommended.

The restaurant's ambiance is appealing, and I enjoyed the food. Unfortunately, my overall impression was significantly dampened by the service. I had to wait about 20 minutes to even receive the menu. The wait for my meal was then about an hour, even though it was a simple order. Paying was also difficult – I had to wait another 30 minutes for the bill. The staff seemed very disorganized and inattentive overall. They paid little attention to the guests; instead, the team often seemed preoccupied with other things. In my opinion, there is a clear need for improvement here to do justice to the otherwise good ambiance and food.

You simply have to go here! Incredibly delicious food, unbeatable value, delightful staff – and the best schnitzel for miles around. A definite recommendation! And if you still have room for the Kaiserschmarrn – go for it! It's worth it.

Highly recommended restaurant with a beautiful beer garden! In summer, the outdoor area is a real highlight – thanks to large umbrellas and shady trees, it's a pleasant place to sit even on hot days. Culinary-wise, we were particularly impressed by the Wiener Schnitzel, which we ordered in the smaller version – absolutely sufficient and delicious! The Kaiserschmarrn, served here as little clouds, could have been a bit fluffier – but the caramelized powdered sugar was a real taste experience. As an aperitif, I highly recommend the apricot spritz – a fruity, summery change! The wine selection is also extensive. My Pinot Gris was wonderfully fresh, summery, and fruity. The service was very attentive, and the wait times were pleasantly short – all in all, a successful visit!

Had a great schnitzel here it's crazy to me how puffy the crust was none of it was even attached to the pork itself which I found strange and yet delectable. Give it a try if you're ever nearby

Full stars for the Gasthaus Scherz👏 On our 2025 fine dine tour, the Gasthaus Scherz restaurant was on the itinerary. To begin with, I can say that we felt very comfortable and ate well. In a cozy atmosphere 😍👌👏You couldn't start better. The staff and waitresses were so friendly and accommodating that we immediately felt at home🥳👍 The service was fast and attentive. The food was delicious with generous portions and excellent value for money. We had the classic 🫠Wiener Schnitzel😋And for dessert, as it should be, the Kaiserschmarrn. Finally, a big compliment to our service staff! 😃The quality of a restaurant rises and falls with it. Even the best chef can't shine without good service. Tips are very welcome here! Keep it up, that's how you stand out in the service desert of Germany 😊🤗 Conclusion: TOP-FOOD!! TOP-FOOD SERVICE AND Friendliness! TOP-FOOD VALUE! TOP-FOOD ambiance and feel-good factor! There were four of us and we had a very mixed evening. In short: Tafelspitz was very good (5 out of 5). The Wiener Schnitzel was good, although €34 is quite expensive (4 out of 5). The fried chicken was rather disappointing (2 out of 5). The biggest disappointment was the dessert, Kaiserschmarrn. It was so dry, 1 out of 5 would be an exaggeration… It's a real shame that this didn't round off the evening. Overall, I wouldn't recommend a return visit, even though the service was really very friendly and attentive.

Honestly, for the price of a Wiener Schnitzel, you'll get a different, higher quality at Lugeck or Figlmüller in Vienna. I think the restaurant was a joke; the only thing that's really great is the prices. I don't think I'll be back, although the terrace is nice.

Delicious food, authentic experience, great service

The interior is well-kept and the beer garden is cozy. The food was well-prepared. Unfortunately, the candied tomato on offer was not as expected in terms of preparation and taste.

The food was nice, but nothing more. The Wiener Schnitzel was okay—but not a highlight. The boiled beef broth was actually excellent (flavor, etc.). But they initially served a cold plate with the dumplings. Three minutes later, the soup was poured in. Even the actually hot broth cooled down in the cold plate. It would be less of a show, but much better, to serve the whole thing from the kitchen in a plate. It's a shame. An otherwise excellent soup becomes mediocre.

Gasthaus Scherz serves the best schnitzel within a 100-km radius. Delicious bread and butter are served first. The terrace is especially pleasant in the summer. The service is attentive and very friendly. We also received excellent advice and support with our wine selection. Thank you for this wonderful evening!

Top address for Austrian cuisine in Cologne! Would love to come back

I'm actually very undecided about awarding stars and I also regret a little that I didn't express my displeasure on site. So first the positive points: The schnitzel is really fantastic! We've also been to Meissl & Schadn in Vienna and the schnitzel at Gasthaus Scherz is even better! The service is also super nice, relaxed and attentive. The price-performance ratio is excellent (especially in the dessert and beverage areas). Unfortunately, what we noticed negatively were the extremely long waiting times for the food. The two of us spent 2.5 hours there for the main course and dessert. That's just too much of a good thing. At the beginning there were 7 tables occupied by us and, in my opinion, enough service staff. You just feel like you're making a bit of a fool when the cranberries are brought out in a bowl, then they say "Schnitzel is coming straight away", then you wait another 10 minutes for the potato salad and then wait another 10 minutes for the actual schnitzel. I've really never experienced that before. The same procedure for dessert. The plums in the bowl were served and the “coming immediately” turned into another 15 minutes. This is really annoying. In addition, we were not presented with a day ticket. But we only noticed this when the newly occupied neighboring tables received these day cards with the daily menu at the end of our visit. It's a real shame, so we could only order from the usual menu due to a lack of further knowledge. Unfortunately, despite the really good food and the nice service, the overall negative impression now predominates. It is still uncertain whether I would give Gasthaus Scherz another chance. First of all, I'll let some grass grow over today's experience.

We were there for dinner on Sunday and were able to sit on the terrace in the good weather, which was very nice. The menu is quite clear. The food was delicious, the schnitzel was really fantastic, but unfortunately the ox cheeks were too powerful. However, the waiting time was really long, it took 40 minutes for the starter and then almost the same time for the main course. That's too long considering the small number of dishes.

2 Stunden und 40 Minuten für Vorspeise (Backhendl), Hauptspeise (Wiener Schnitzel) und Dessert (Wölkchen)- das geht gar nicht!! Die Karte ist übersichtlich und strukturiert; es gibt wenige Gerichte, so dass sich die Küche entsprechend vorbereiten, organisieren und disponieren kann. Auch wenn ein Hype durch Tim Raue entstanden sein mag (dieser kann übrigens auch einmal nicht ganz richtig liegen), waren wir aufgrund der inakzeptablen Dauer auf die Speisen verärgert. Die Qualität und der Geschmack waren in Ordnung- mehr nicht. Auch andere Gäste bemängelten die Wartezeiten. Wenn man dann noch die aufgerufenen Preise ins Kalkül zieht- das hat nicht gepasst. Über 2 1/2 Stunden auf einer Holzbank mit einer dünnen Auflage, das muss man mögen. Bis auf einen etwas selbstherrlich und blasiert erscheinenden Kellner war die Crew wirklich bemüht und freundlich. Alles in allem nichts, was man sich nochmals geben muss. Ein durchschnittliches und teures Mittagessen, mehr leider nicht.

Solid schnitzel, unfortunately the potato salad was too mushy. The Kaiserschmarren could have been juicier for us. Services was a bit chaotic. Drinks were missing and extra dishes were brought that were not ordered. Overall, it's solid and a pretty good place for schnitzel

Would have gotten five points but tap water would have been sold for nine euros a bottle, I can't understand why you don't do that, especially when you offer upscale gastronomy

We spontaneously got 2 places on a Sunday afternoon. We actually wanted to try the best schnitzel in Cologne, but after looking at the menu we decided on a starter variation, Tafelspitz and Fregola Sarda. The food was fantastic, the schnitzel will have to wait until the next time or the one after that. The service is incredibly nice and attentive. We felt very comfortable. The Gasthaus Scherz is an absolute highlight in Cologne! The food is simply wonderful and the service is attentive and warm. What I particularly like is that everything here is very low-threshold in the best sense of the word - you immediately feel comfortable and welcome. The wine list is superbly put together and impresses with very fair prices. An all-round great experience that I can only warmly recommend!

The veal schnitzel called, we came and what can I say, it was also convincing. Plus the delicious Stiegl beer from Salzburg, simply perfect! The “small” Kaiserschmarrn was also so delicious that my brother didn’t want to share. 😉 It was a lovely evening with good food and very good and attentive service.

Excellent Wiener Schnitzel and Tafelspitz Bouillon

We were there because of the schnitzel hype from dear Tim Raue. Yes, schnitzel is delicious, potato salad too and there is Mühlenkölsch. Staff and atmosphere is friendly. There is a bit of a slowdown at peak times, but that's okay. We had a lovely evening and that's what counts.

Die Wienerschnitzel war topp! Aber Kalb anstatt Rind im Tafelspitz geht gar nicht! Dann besser nicht anbieten. Wir haben Platz ohne Reservierung bekommen, vielen Dank. Marillenspritzer war ein Gaumenfest! Und Kaiserschmarrn war lecker. Den Apfelstrudel bitte noch üben. Wir kommen wieder wenn der Biergarten geöffnet wird

A very nice restaurant. The service was top. He knew a lot about the way the food and wines were prepared. The food was very tasty. The price here is in the upper range. But that's okay in my opinion. A highly recommended restaurant, gladly again.

My biggest criticism is the lack of information on the menu. If it says "pasta with vegetables" then I don't expect cooked lemon peels in my food. It may be hip and a matter of taste, but if I had known, I would have ordered something different. And I don't expect rum in Kaiserschmarrn. What's the problem with simply writing "Flambiert Kaiserschmarrn" on the menu? Then you are warned and can order it without alcohol if you wish. I would also have liked this option for the children at the table, who were not informed about it beforehand. The waitresses were all very nice.

Very nice restaurant with dedicated service. To be honest, the long wait really spoiled my evening. In total it took about 60 minutes after the starter until the main course arrived. That can definitely be better. It would also have been nice if the bread was warmed and the butter was presented in a small container instead of in canteen-style plastic packaging.

Authentic Austrian cuisine in a feel-good inn There is a small selection of Austrian restaurants in Cologne that offer first-class national and regional cuisine from our neighboring country. The Gasthaus Scherz has been known among gourmets for many years for its consistently high quality Viennese cuisine. After moving to Luxemburger Straße, Michel Scherz offers his guests a spacious, well-kept inn atmosphere with a feel-good factor. The outdoor dining area is a good recommendation for warm summer evenings. The service in the inn is attentive and friendly. The small menu offers a selection of typical Austrian tavern and Buschenschank classics, which are freshly and traditionally prepared using the best ingredients. The cooked pieces of beef in vegetable stock (Tafelspitz and Shoulderscherzl) are just as reminiscent of traditional Viennese cuisine as is the golden-yellow fried veal schnitzel in clarified butter. As a lover of Styrian Sulmtal fried chicken, I was initially extremely irritated when one of my favorite dishes was served. Instead of the familiar crispy breaded chicken pieces (breast, leg, wings and offal), 3 finely breaded slices were served. They reminded me very little of the original I was familiar with. But after the first bite it quickly became clear: This interpretation of the Styrian classic doesn't need to hide. The tender meat from the free-range chicken was formed into a roll with an aromatic farce and gently cooked in the convection oven. The juicy, tender chicken was then cut into slices and finely breaded. I was thrilled by this unusual preparation. With a little lemon and the spicy potato and cucumber salad with pumpkin seed oil, it's pure enjoyment - no trace of the dry breast meat that is unfortunately common. After my enthusiasm for the fried chicken, I don't want to forget to mention that the shoulder joke in the root stock was also perfectly prepared quality meat that can definitely be compared to the well-known Viennese restaurants. We also really enjoyed the fluffy Kaiserschmarrn with rum raisins and plum roaster. We can recommend the Gasthaus Scherz on Luxemburger Straße in every respect: Austrian quality cuisine, authentic inn atmosphere, friendly service and reasonable prices - in short: a feel-good place. By the way: In addition to Mühlen-Kölsch, Stiegl beer, Vöslauer mineral water and a large selection of Austrian wines are available here.

Our first meal at the Gasthaus Scherz ended with my dear wife saying: "We'll go back here again." The Wiener Schnitzel was perfect, as was the Tafelspitz and the friendly service made “the trio” perfect. And the fact that we were able to get both of our meals in smaller portions rounded off the really good impression. We'll meet Again :-) A tip for those interested: Only go with a reservation. We were able to experience “live” how at least 6 couples unfortunately had to be turned away during our visit. Online reservations are also possible 4 hours before the desired date (provided there are spaces available) and worked brilliantly for us (why not?)!

Despite the restaurant being full, very good service with excellent Wiener Schnitzel, it doesn't get any better in Austria!

The best Wiener Schnitzel I've eaten in a long time. Just good. Unfortunately the area we sat in was not heated. Even complaining didn't bring any change. That was the only downer.

Eigentlich (…) ganz nettes Lokal. Leider wurden wir vier Personen trotz Reservierung vier Wochen zuvor am schlechtesten Platz (erster Tisch links) platziert. Dauernd geht die Türe auf, Menschen rein, Menschen raus, alle stehen und laufen einem ständig um den Tisch, eine Situation bei Temperaturen draußen unter null Grad ist das eine doppelte Zumutung, da ständig ein eiskalter Wind über den Tisch weht. Damit wir die dadurch entstandene Ungemütlichkeit auch ausgiebig genießen konnten, mussten wir auf das Hauptgericht 2 1/2 Stunden (!) warten und dann war auch noch die Rechnung zu hoch, was wir erst zu Hause bemerkt haben und natürlich nicht mehr reklamieren werden. Der Service ist bemüht, aber, wenn das Lokal voll ist, überfordert. Wir waren schon oft bei Scherz. So einen unschönen Abend hatten wir bisher allerdings noch nicht.
