Gasthaus Gutenberg in Karlsruhe

We've already been to the restaurant "Das Gutenberg" twice and so far have been very satisfied with the food and service. We were particularly impressed by the child-friendliness. Unfortunately, today (on my birthday) we had one of the worst service experiences in years. As we entered the restaurant, a man stood in front of us and pointedly blocked our way – as it turned out, upon inquiry, he was the owner's husband. We were still debating whether we wanted to sit inside or outside. The man seemed extremely impatient. I said my daughter wanted to eat outside, but the two adults wanted to eat inside. That would be two votes to one, so the decision was made, and he smiled kindly. The man didn't understand me and replied, exasperated, that he "just needed to know" where to seat us. We asked to be seated in the back area, as my daughter wanted to sit on one of the comfortable couches, and the ambiance was a bit more welcoming than the rather dark front area. We were told the back room was only half open, whatever that meant. I also expressed myself somewhat poorly by saying we wanted "to go in the back." The man repeated these words several times with a serious expression, as if I were an idiot. Finally, he seated us at a large table, noting that it was reserved for an hour and a half. I pointed to a couch right next to it that was free and asked if we could sit there – no answer, just the cold shoulder and the exit. My conclusion: Very narrow-minded, very condescending, totally inflexible. I felt like I was only being tolerated. But maybe we weren't dressed elegantly enough, the man hadn't slept well, who knows... In any case, I would have spent ten times as much if the welcome had been friendly and cordial, or even just neutral, and if we adults had both eaten a schnitzel for just under €22, a bottle of wine, and our daughter a children's meal with a drink, as planned. We then just drank a bottle of water and went across the street to the Italian restaurant, where we received a friendly welcome and the food was also particularly delicious. The second star is only for the dedicated waitress, who immediately brought us a children's coloring book and colored pencils and apologized for the inconvenience. I will never set foot in this restaurant again and wonder how restaurateurs can afford to treat customers like this in the current situation. But apparently there are enough regulars to make up for the sporadic visitors. Who knows how long...

Very tasty food and cozy outdoor area.

Mixed feelings. Good food, nice atmosphere. Prices are too high, too high for me to reserve a table, pay €45 just for the steak, and then have strangers join me without question. Decide whether you want a beer garden or haute cuisine.

We went to the Gutenberg for a birthday breakfast for my wife. The place looks nice, the service was quick and friendly and the food was pretty good, although the choices are a bit limited and unusual.

The Gutenberg has a lovely ambiance, and the staff is very friendly and helpful. The food was very good: schnitzel with fried potatoes and salad.

I spontaneously stopped by with a friend on the afternoon of June 21, 2025. A very warm welcome, friendly and attentive service, and excellent food. A beautiful beer garden. We'll be back!

Great atmosphere, good food, friendly service.

After last dining at Gutenbergs 11 years ago, I happened to be nearby with friends. While looking for dinner, we found the last available table. The food, service, and ambiance are still as good as they were 11 years ago. Especially the legendary crispy schnitzel in pretzel dough hasn't changed. We'll definitely be back at Gutenbergs in Karlsruhe at Gutenbergplatz.

We were here for both breakfast and dinner. The food, service, and drinks were consistently outstanding! There were crayons and a coloring book for the children (1-3). All the dishes were absolutely delicious. From brioche to scrambled eggs, French toast, cappuccino, cordon bleu, pasta, and meat… Also worth mentioning are the very clean restrooms with a changing table. Highly recommended!

Loved it here - traditional fare and great quality. Schnitzel and Corden Bleu were delicious. Wine was pricey but a great list. Will be back

Not a big menu when it comes to food. But what you eat is made with a lot of love and tastes incredibly good. A huge selection when it comes to the wine list and there is the right wine for everyone!

Great food and drinks, friendly service, stylish and cozy atmosphere. A bit higher price level which is absolutely justified for the quality. It's a shame it's no longer open on Sundays, otherwise we would be here much more often!

Nice restaurant with a quiet and cozy atmosphere. We also sat outside in the courtyard. The menu is small, but there is something for everyone. Thank you, the quality of the products is very fine. The selection of drinks is very large and they offer delicious homemade spritzers.

We were at Gutenberg Platz again for market day. After shopping, we planned a small breakfast at the Gutenberg Restaurant. Well, there was delicious toast from the brunch menu. The service was nice and friendly. The restrooms were clean.

Nice location, nice but slow service and average but expensive food. Everyone in the restaurant is always trying hard, but since there is a remarkable amount of staff running around and everything is digital, the drinks take forever (every time). The food is expensive, (17-45€), side dishes (+6/7€) or sauces (3/4€) cost extra. So you can quickly get to €20-40 per person. Regional goods, that's how it's justified. But for the price we expected more... in the end it's good but expensive brewery food, fancy prepared. You can save yourself.

It's actually an institution in Karlsruhe. It's been around for years and is always a popular place to visit. The staff is very friendly and helpful. There's a large beer garden and a covered area in the courtyard. Food and drinks are offered at regular prices, and the staff is happy to help with the selection. Parking is available in front of the restaurant on the square or on the street. The interior of the restaurant is quite quaint and quite cozy in winter. We'll definitely go there again 😆😆 Unfortunately, I haven't had a good experience there in the meantime. Reservations are made for a specific time depending on the number of people. That's a good business sense, though: the guest has to leave when the time is up. Will they come back? We're happy to skip it and go to another location after the market, somewhere where we're still welcome and respected as guests.

I had the pleasure of visiting Das Gutenberg, and it was a thoroughly positive experience. From the moment you enter the restaurant, you are warmly welcomed and well looked after by the friendly staff. The menu is varied and places a special emphasis on regional ingredients – a real highlight! The food was visually appealing and tasted excellent. The portions are generous, and the value for money is absolutely fair. It's rare to find such good food at such reasonable prices these days. The atmosphere in the restaurant is also impressive: modern, cozy, and inviting. Another plus point is the location directly at the weekly market, ideal for a break after a shopping spree. Das Gutenberg is suitable for both individual guests and larger groups, even private parties. Everything is just right here: great cuisine, attentive service, and a pleasant ambiance. A true insider tip in Karlsruhe that I can wholeheartedly recommend!

Difficult, I give the kitchen all the stars I can give, we were there as a large group. From the starter to the dessert, everything was top quality. The prices are anything but reasonable. I can't understand it. Personally, I certainly wouldn't eat here. I found the location very good, you feel comfortable. The service only gets one star, why? Because the waiter is a proletarian, I don't need anyone trying to be my buddy, after 15 minutes it was over, could you please pass on the plates etc., turned into: "Pass on, cutlery too", please get out of the habit quickly. One somehow doesn't fit with the other.

Good German cuisine, not cheap, but attention is paid to high quality, quick service, and pleasant sitting in the green in the summer. Recommended.

On my last visit, on December 3rd, 2024, I tried the cordon bleu, which was very tasty. When I visited last 2023, I had a Viennese-style schnitzel with fried potatoes and a side salad. Everything was freshly prepared. The meat was of good quality and I enjoyed it. The fried potatoes were good and the side salad was nice and colorful and I also liked the dressing. The price-performance ratio is reasonable, but it shouldn't cost more. Friendly and attentive service. Cozy atmosphere.

The Gutenberg is very inviting and everything is very harmonious. The quality of the food is excellent. From game to vegetarian dishes, I can only warmly recommend everything. We'll be back, no question :-)

The prices are a joke, right? Where do these restaurateurs actually think they are? Are you confusing Karlsruhe with Marseille? Not even in Konstanz, which offers endless tourism, does it have such prices!

Booked a table at this restaurant several weeks beforehand, but when we arrived we were told that there was a wedding in the biergarten so tables were limited. We overheard the waiter saying he could set up a table outside, but the (maitre d'? Owner?) said no and then suggested we share four-person table with two other people. His attitude was like we'd just come off the street, rather than people who had booked well in advance. After a few minutes it became obvious that it wasn't going to work, so we got up to leave. Luckily the waiter then took matters into his own hands and set up a new table for us. We ordered the Schnitzel, which we both found too salty. However, everything else was tasty.

Very nicely located courtyard with beautiful large trees. Very friendly staff. The food was perfect, also a feast for the eyes, a bit high price but appropriate for the quality. Highly recommended

First visit to Guttenberg. The telephone reservation worked well. We were met at the door and escorted to our table in the backyard. Everything is nice and shady, it looks a bit wild during the day, but in the dark the lighting is really great. Service was friendly, attention was okayyyyy... The food was excellent. Well seasoned, great quantity, interesting combination of good quality regional ingredients. We had various aperitifs as drinks. There is an interesting selection, but none of them really suited our taste and we found the prices to be excessive for what was on offer. Our conclusion: really tasty for food and definitely recommended, but go somewhere else to drink.

So far I have enjoyed coming here as a customer on foot. After reading the most recent article about the traffic experiment on Sophienstrasse in the horrible, because incredibly one-sided, BNN, I will no longer do that. I really regret that many people at Gutenbergplatz apparently don't have the imagination to imagine this place without tons of metal. The concern described in the article about difficulties for emergency services is incredibly transparent and ridiculous - of course the BNN uses it as a headline because they want to be the Baden image. I ask you to take a moment to reflect and ask yourself what usually causes delays in rescue operations (tip: it's not air conditioning glue). There are of course major problems with the flood of cars in the area (contrary to what the article claims). People like me would spend a lot more time here if the spaces were distributed a little more fairly and Gutenbergplatz wasn't the nicest parking lot in the city.

Have been to Gutenberg three times now and have been very satisfied every time. The regular menu is manageable, but is supplemented by an occasionally changing recommendation menu with 6 or 7 really exciting dishes. Service is competent and always has a quick comment ready. All the service staff who looked after us were very nice and seemed to enjoy their work. Before entering the restaurant you are greeted and seated by the restaurant manager (?), unusual to see something like that in this price range, but from a restaurateur's point of view it makes perfect sense. All in all, every visit to Gutenberg was fun and we always left the restaurant happy, full and without a hole in our wallet. If we lived in Karlsruhe, we would probably be here every day.

Historic tavern in the here and now. Funny, attentive service. Even shortly before the kitchen closed, we received a friendly and warm welcome. In the inner courtyard you can sit comfortably under the effectively lit canopy of large plane trees. Asian hanging lamps made of straw and small battery-powered lamps on the tables create a cozy atmosphere. The food is modern, refined tavern cuisine. Schnitzel in pretzel breading, lovingly decorated with a mini pretzel. Vegetarian appetizer decorated with flowers. Attention to detail, attention to the whole. You can sit nicely in front of the inn with a view of Gutenbergplatz, see and be seen.

Four of us went to Gutenberg for dinner. A really nicely decorated restaurant. The staff is very friendly with even better recommendations for the food and the drinks that go with it. The iced teas are highly recommended in summer. The location and ambience are fantastic and unparalleled in Karlsruhe. Plus a very good meal - what more could you want. Reservations can be made online without any problem. Highly recommended.

There's something special about dining under plane tree leaves. A really nice backyard with 2 large plane trees. Good food and attentive service, a really cold beer and nice conversations, that's what I call a successful stay. Gladly again.

This restaurant was recommended by a friend and I gave it a try on a Thursday at lunchtime. The food was super delicious, the prices fair and the staff very friendly. Update (2024): Have visited this restaurant more than 50 times now over the course of 4 years at different days and times. Food is always delicious and staff super friendly and attentive. Besides the normal menu, they also have a daily changing lunch during the week as well as evening specials that are worth checking out. Reservations are recommended, especially in the evenings and on weekends. Unfortunately, in the past few months the prices have been inadequate for a lunch menu, hence the 2 star reduction.

Unfortunately, as in many places, the prices have now risen steeply, the portions feel smaller and the quality is no longer what it used to be. Drink prices are not to be sneezed at either! It's a shame, but I'll avoid it in the future.

Spontaneously for dinner at the Gasthaus Gutenberg, which is located on the enchanting Gutenberg Platz. 1 2 3 I had my table and was treated to culinary delights by the staff. The restaurant has a very harmonious ambience, and the outdoor area also invites you to linger. 5 stars simply delicious.

Sehr netter Service. Tolles Essen. Cordon Bleu war hervorragend. Aber auch das Knusperschnitzel und das Schnitzel "Wiener Art" waren klasse. Sehr zu empfehlen!

Very nice atmosphere right on Gutenbergplatz with the full meditative flair. Very nice, communicative host who brought the dog a bowl of water without being asked (it was very hot last night (over 30 degrees)). Fried potatoes were very tasty, the tuna salad could have tasted a little better.

Went to Gutenberg again today because we like being there. However, we were yelled at stupidly because two people canceled even though the store was never even 1/3 full at any point during the 2 1/2 hours. I even had to sit on a rocker chair at the end because two people could still sit at the table even though there was still so much free space. And then we were recommended a drink where the price was thrown under the table and in the end the drink alone cost €50. The waiter was also very pushy and unfriendly. I think it's a shame because I enjoyed going there. The food was ok, but it was also better. Something was simply missing, but it could simply have been due to the bad mood that was spread to us from the beginning.

No go - outrageous! Just last Friday we, my family, 6 adults, a baby, a toddler, were at the Gutenberg, in the middle of Karlsruhe, great restaurant, nice ambience, good service, the price is on the higher end but you can read that in the menu! Actually, we would have been satisfied, but: As a baby boomer, I have been traveling in restaurants and inns for almost 50 years and, as a Franconian, I am actually very familiar with inn customs... and so right at the beginning, after determining a total bill, we followed the waiter's recommendation and got the individual one Appetizer plate ordered without asking about type, size and price! We simply trusted it! From the starter menu there were two x two plates each for around 15.00 euros and around 13.00 euros each, so around 56.00 euros and a bowl of 25 pieces of giant prawns for 6.50 euros each. Total price 162.50 , so that the starters were around 220.00 euros and were therefore more expensive than the main course! When he asked the waiter about it, he thought it was normal and he would have seen the advance notice about the price as an insult to the customer! So you never stop learning, my wealth of experience in pub customs has expanded! So I found it a no-go, even outrageous, and I recommend always asking the question: How much does it cost?

Too expensive for what it is. Small portions, nothing really special. Keller wore very strong perfume, which I found additionally disturbing, even if it was a small thing. Unfortunately, Gutenbergplatz is the worst choice for a restaurant and I wouldn't recommend it. I am very sorry. I usually only write very good reviews. We were disappointed.

The food was prepared quickly and was very tasty. The portions are medium size. If you visit the restaurant when you are very hungry, you should order at least a salad with it or enjoy a large dessert after the main course. We were there as a group of 7 people. The menu is not large. However, there is something for everyone. The prices are slightly higher than usual. We will visit Guttenberg again as we all enjoyed it and the staff were very friendly.

The food was delicious (but also expensive). Small selection of vegetarian dishes and non-alcoholic drinks. Ice cream was also delicious. Nice ambience. The menu design could be much better, e.g. clear signs for vegetarian, meat, etc.
