Fisch von Ehlers in Schönberg (Holstein)

The food is simply amazing. Anyone who loves fish absolutely must visit this little shop/stall. It was one of the best fish cakes I've ever eaten, and the battered fish is also very good. All the dishes are reasonably priced, and the ambiance with Schönberger Strand in the background is fantastic.

After almost 10 years, we're back here. The fish here is still the best. We were really looking forward to stopping by again. Best wishes from Bavaria.

Super homemade fish cakes and delicious fish sandwiches

This shop in California used to be really good, with delicious fried fish at fair prices. For the past two years, that seems to be a thing of the past! First, the fish got smaller, then the price went up, and parts of the order were missing, which is very annoying with takeout food when you have to park far away and then your food is either cold, incomplete, or eaten in two portions. The second-to-last time, the sauce I paid for extra was missing! Today we got two fish sandwiches to go, but unfortunately, my herring sandwich only had half a herring on it. It's enough; I'm a patient person, and mistakes can happen to everyone, but if they somehow manage to mess it up on every one of my annual visits, I'll go somewhere else in the future where they make the effort to wrap the entire order!

Delicious fish dishes and fish sandwiches. We ate there several times during our vacation and were always very satisfied.

We thank you for the tastiest fish in the region. I know from my own experience that no one sells better quality than you. The salmon always tastes fresh. My children love it. No one makes the homemade fish cakes even remotely better than you. There are troublemakers everywhere; they can just go to the fishermen's huts. Best wishes from Plön, the Knust family.

The fish is excellent, the fish sandwiches are very good, seating is a bit limited, but that's not the main thing. A clear recommendation.

We haven't eaten fish this bad for that price in a long time. Smoked salmon fresh from a packet with disgusting quark that was definitely not homemade, fried fish with a thick chemical coating and chemical remolade... paid a total of €31 for that at the self-service counter... NEVER AGAIN

Touching my food without gloves after previously holding money is completely unacceptable! The outside area is dirty and the trash can is overflowing, even though there was nothing going on! 4 salespeople behind the counter arguing with each other! The one with the glasses on his high forehead was awesome! Awkward

The fish was fresh and delicious. The selection is extensive. The staff is friendly. It's self-service. The ambiance is incredibly inviting. There's seating down by the promenade and a terrace with a sea view on the dike.

Quite okay. Service was very fast. The fish cake was fresh and still crispy on the outside, and tasted good. The potato salad, however, was unfortunately not very edible. I doubt it was homemade, but it was definitely smothered in instant mayo. The herring fish sandwich was well-filled and delicious. The seating area up on the dam, with a windshield all around, offers a lovely view.

They have the best fish cakes here. Absolutely top-notch and highly recommended.

The food was okay, but we wouldn't go back. The baked potato was very dry, and the fishcake sandwich could have used more tartar sauce. We also found the 45-minute wait for self-service to be very long. There were lots of small spiders crawling around in the upstairs seating area, on us, on the table, on the plates...yes, nature, but still not appetizing. The view was nice.

Seating is only available outside, at the snack bar or in the wind-protected seating area up on the dike. At the snack bar, some seating is available in beach chairs or at high tables with bar stools, covered by parasols. Nice and friendly staff, short wait times when busy, fair prices €-€€ Parking is available approximately 120-150 meters away, parking at the tourist information office/Edeka supermarket, some subject to a fee.

The staff was very unfriendly and completely overwhelmed with four fish sandwiches. The meatballs were very tasty, but this will be our last visit due to the staff. Today was the second time the lady in the food truck was very unfriendly. It's a shame.

You can't pass by without buying a fish sandwich. Highly recommended!

The delicious fish sandwiches are fresh and generously topped. The fish cakes and fried fish are highly recommended.

First of all, I have to say that Ehlers has the best fish cakes in the north!!! You have to try them... BUT while the fried fish on the plate appears to be homemade, the fried fish sandwich is made from an industrial source and then sold at a high price. This isn't written down anywhere and is a major negative for us!!! In fact, it's also the reason I still prefer to eat at Fischer Kruse, 200 meters away.

As a long-time regular at the Ehlers fish smokehouse on Schönberger Strand, which I have visited regularly for over 15 years, I regret to note that the quality of customer service has deteriorated significantly this year. While the food still tastes excellent and is of the usual high quality, the staff, especially one salesperson, was visibly unmotivated and irritated. During two visits on different days, there were ordering errors that were not only annoying but also avoidable. The first time, I ordered a herring roll, a portion of potato salad, and two fish cakes with potato salad, but instead received a herring roll with onions and potato salad in a box of chips (without a roll) and the larger, homemade fish cakes. I was not asked which fish cake I wanted. It was assumed I wanted the homemade ones. On my wife's second visit, she also ordered a herring roll and two small fish cakes with potato salad. Instead, we received two meatballs with potato salad and the long-awaited herring roll. I didn't think much of it, considering the price was so high. Especially with such demotivated employees in a holiday region, you'd expect extortion. It was obvious that all six employees I saw during my visits didn't enjoy their work. This is especially unfortunate, as the Ehlers fish smokehouse was a highlight of my vacations for years. In light of these experiences, I will avoid the Ehlers fish smokehouse, which I have valued so much for over a decade and a half, in the coming years. It's unfortunate to see a once highly recommended business lose its appeal due to poor service. Therefore, I have to drastically reduce the 5 stars I gave it back then. The food is excellent, but the staff (at least one of them) put us off.

Freshly prepared fish dishes. Prices are OK. July 9, 2025 If the saleswomen, who aren't entirely knowledgeable, don't even know the difference between their own freshly prepared meatballs and the industrially fried ones, it's better to leave it alone. I wanted a homemade meatball in a bun, but the saleswoman didn't get it and made me an industrial one in a bun. Let German people take your order, otherwise you'll get the wrong thing you didn't order.

Delicious fish sandwiches if you're in a hurry, priced OK, cash only. We had a "Homemade Fish Cake with Homemade Remoulade" and a "Pollock in a Baguette." Both were delicious, but there was far too little remoulade, which was a shame; it seemed a bit dry. Next time, you'll probably have to explicitly mention it and ask for a little more. Luckily, there are several options for eating: standing tables under the tent roof (shaded!) or beach chairs—both good options.

Here, the fish is killed a second time. The fried fish is coated in beer batter, which should actually be golden brown after frying. Here, it's dark brown, and the fish is fried at much too high a temperature. The accompanying potato salad isn't worth mentioning in terms of quantity.

I'm very satisfied. It's a must every year when we're here. Homemade fish cakes with fries and homemade remoulade are super tasty. The fish sandwich is also delicious. They used to serve fried potatoes, but unfortunately not anymore. I think that's a shame; I used to love them. But fries and potato salad with them are also okay and tasty. You can sit by the building, and there are also seats up on the dike. Great view of the sea and pier. A glass wall protects it from the wind.

We ordered mackerel to go and got herring in a roll. The lettuce was already brown and flavorless. We've been shopping there for many years, and we've never had anything like this. We weren't satisfied.

The fish here is always freshly prepared and always tastes great. The homemade fish cakes and the homemade remoulade are particularly noteworthy. The rolls are freshly baked and not pre-baked.

Ordering and picking up at the food truck went faster than the line would have suggested. My very large smoked salmon roll was unusually generously topped with salmon, salad, and a delicious honey and mustard sauce. The herring roll was also large and loaded with plenty of fish and side dishes. The price/performance ratio was excellent. We were pleasantly surprised. We came spontaneously and sat down in the special area on the dike. Everything was clean, even with a high volume of visitors. We'd be happy to come back.

We have been going to "Ehlers" for around 20 years. May 1st. Standard plated meal. Completely different than before. Totally greasy potato salad. Pollock schnitzel a la cheap frozen food and preheated. In short: not worth the money. Very bad. Never again!!! Despite rising purchasing prices, this cannot be the solution. That might be enough for tourist walk-in customers. She's not coming back anyway. You definitely lose “regular customers” this way. Sad.

My son and I were there on Easter Monday 2025. Ordering and collection from the sales cart went faster than the queue would have suggested. After eating, however, the question arose as to why there was a queue there at all. The fish cake had some flavor from the sauce, otherwise, as is not uncommon with fish cakes, the taste was insignificant. But it still worked like that. However, the stremella salmon rolls were a big disappointment for both of us. The salmon was ice cold, as if it had just been thawed in the fridge, and tasted bland. No spice, no dressing. Cold lump of salmon on rolls. My son "seasoned" it a little with the mayo from the fries and, driven by hunger, ate it. I threw away the cold mush after two bites. Plus a very small portion of French fries for 4 euros - equally disappointing. At best lukewarm and overall sticky and chewy. Obviously not freshly made. Too bad about the money. I understand that the catering industry is forced to keep rising prices, but bad food at high prices is not acceptable.

Have been coming to the Baltic Sea for 50 years. They are often also on Schönberger Beach. This always included eating fish at Ehlers. We still know the last generation of Ehlers. Today we were disappointed by the poor quality, and appalled by the prices and the poor service. Can't recommend it more. Was the last time.

Very tasty fried fish. Great quality and offer at appropriate prices. Unfortunately, the opening times described online were not correct, so we initially found ourselves in front of a closed door. When we asked whether we could sit in the courtyard protected from the wind and dry (rainy day), we were a little disappointed and dried the table and chairs ourselves - if the answer hadn't been yes, we would have preferred to take our food with us.

Judging by the good reviews, we must have had a bad day: the plaice fillet had a thick breading, but less taste and unfortunately a soft consistency. The potato salad was run of the mill convenience. The fish from Ehlers on the promenade is served fresh and superbly prepared. Enjoying the fish on the dike with a view of the Baltic Sea and protected from the wind is a pleasure. The fish sandwiches are freshly prepared and taste delicious. The staff is friendly, competent and approachable. The price-performance ratio is ok. It's worth eating there.

When you're by the sea, fish is a must. And in Schönberg Strand it is first and foremost Ehlers with its good quality.

I've been coming to you for years when I'm at Schöneberger Strand. The food is super tasty, fried fish with homemade remoulade, fish cakes, or various fish rolls are simply a treat for the palate 🤤 I hope after the devastating disaster in February you can build a new building. But the car is a really good alternative. Please keep it up and don't let it get you down 🐟

We took something with us on vacation twice. Majes rolls and rolls with homemade meatballs with homemade remolade. It was super tasty every time.

Simple self-service fish restaurant on the promenade with the option of eating sheltered from the wind on the dike with a view of the sea. Because it has the character of a snack bar at very reasonable prices.

I bought a fried fish this evening shortly before opening hours and wanted to enjoy it at home with my children. It's a good thing I tried it first, the fish was definitely no longer fresh and smelled unpleasant when I cut it. That's more than a shame and unacceptable for almost 15 euros. Unfortunately it ended up completely in the trash can.

We have been going to Ehlers for many years and have always been very satisfied. Unfortunately, prices have increased significantly, but quality has decreased. There are no more fried potatoes, but instead potato salad from the bucket. The food comes new on the paper plate. But the fried fish is still delicious.

Baked fish teka, most of the herring now comes from Holland frozen. With the masses of people you can't even offer fresh food. In order to make money, the price would have to double, which no one can pay anymore. I won't write anything about prices, I don't have to buy anything. When it comes to prices, it's perfectly fine, more quantity than quality, everyone has to decide for themselves what they want I can't recommend anything, everyone has their own taste. Overall, I and my wife were happy with the food, we had fried fish in garlic sauce, we have eaten worse, for a much higher price.

Baked fish warmed up in the microwave is not possible at all....and 6 euros for that....it's better to drive 3 minutes further because the fried fish was fresh and not frozen food warmed up in the microwave...

At the moment we are served from a container, unfortunately a fire destroyed the building 😔. The matjes was great, unfortunately the sticky roll was not ☹️

Fish always prepared fresh and tasty. Staff always nice and friendly, a visit that is worth it.

We have been to Ehlers several times in recent years and really enjoyed eating fried fish and other things there. Unfortunately, we can no longer confirm the otherwise good opinion we had. In Schönberg there was simply a frozen fried fish in a roll with a little tartar sauce. In the past, the fried fish was freshly breaded and fried. Unfortunately, this is no longer the case. I can also buy breaded fish from the discount store, bake it and put it in a roll. You are already at the sea and are served Tk goods. It's a shame, it used to be really tasty at Ehlers.

So far we have always received top fried fish and other things and are very satisfied. You have to be clear that no restaurant is great in terms of ambience, food too and the girls and boys have always been friendly so far

It's a fish stall right next to the sea. I was looking forward to a good fried fish, I got frozen fish ala Käpten Ig... . I expect something different at the sea.

Yesterday, May 9, 2024 (Ascension Day), we stopped there on a bike tour. We bought two fish sandwiches with homemade fish cake and tartar sauce, each for 2.50 euros. It was packed well because we wanted to take a break a little further at the museum train station. Big bun with a really big meatball and it tasted really good. We were completely satisfied and full, happy to go back!

Even though the store burned down completely If the team stands in front of it in a car and carries on, the quality hasn't suffered at all. RESPECT keeps it up, better times are coming

Since March 29th, 2024 you can buy fish and fish rolls from a sales container here again. Although the offer has been reduced due to the circumstances, I am pleased to see that the location is not being abandoned. My condolences and deepest sympathy regarding the tragedy and all the best for the future.

Wir hatten Ofenkartoffel mit Quark und Lachs. Backfisch: Tradition hin oder her - gut war er nicht! Es ist alles unter unserer Erwartung gewesen. Wir werden hier kein weiteres Mal einkehren. Schade!

As always, we only got smoked fish. We ate it comfortably at home and it was great as always, we tried pretty much everything and everything is recommended.
