We booked a table by phone and received confirmation. When we arrived, we were met with extreme rudeness from the staff, who told us our tables were booked two months in advance and that we were being ripped off. There was no way to have a normal conversation or find a solution.

We actually didn't go there because we didn't get a chance to eat there. They didn't generally take reservations at this restaurant, according to what we were told on the phone. To me, that means the business owner is passing the risk on to the guests. You can do it that way, but it's out of the question for me. I'd drive there especially and maybe hear, "Sorry, no table available, no thanks." As a business owner, you naturally carry a certain amount of risk. It's not okay if guests simply don't show up, but I won't take that risk. It's also fitting that you should only pay in cash, possibly with an EC card for amounts over €25; otherwise, no cards are accepted. After reading a few reviews, we're glad we made that decision.

The Eselskrug Inn in Wernigerode is definitely worth a visit. The owners truly give their all for their guests, and you feel very comfortable. The food is excellent. We're looking forward to our next vacation in Wernigerode and our visit to the Eselskrug. We can't rate the rooms.

The restaurant is right on the intersection, so the beer garden is very, very loud. The food was okay. Not bad, but not good either. The service takes some getting used to. We were immediately addressed as "du," but so were the grandmas and grandpas at the next table. It's not everyone's cup of tea.

After a long search, we finally found what we were looking for. At Eselskrug, you can still enjoy hearty regional cuisine. We were delighted with the solyanka. It's just like mom's. Table 16 is highly recommended. We were there on our bikes and will definitely be back. If you're looking for something hearty, Eselskrug is the place to be. Of course, great food isn't complete without great staff. Because the house of cards stands or falls with them. Keep up the good work.

Anja, the manager, and her employees, especially Momo, the veteran, have taken to our hearts ♥️♥️♥️ It was like coming home every time. You actually go to a restaurant to eat. The food and drinks were always great. But often that was secondary. We cared about the people mentioned because of their warmth. In any case, going on vacation in Wernigerode and not going to the Eselskrug is simply not an option. I'm just sad now because my dear mother has passed away, and I have to figure out how to continue on my own. I wish the Eselskrug staff much health, happiness, and joy. Also, always good business. We were on vacation and found the place very inviting from the outside. After reading up on it, we went there for dinner and were not disappointed! Great atmosphere, delicious food, and attentive and extremely friendly staff 😉 Highly recommended!

We ate here twice during our week-long vacation. Both times, the food was delicious, and the service was friendly and welcoming! We once witnessed a family leave because they found the waiter's friendly, smiling "Come join me!" rude! Oh dear! Glad those sourpusses left. We had two lovely evenings here. One star deducted because we were seated with a stranger. But we accepted it because we enjoyed the Eselskrug!

I agree with the most recent reviews: unfriendly staff, decent food, but well above average price for the region. Fine for a drink, but eat elsewhere if you want a fun evening with better value.

We were completely satisfied on both occasions. The food was delicious and plentiful, served quickly, even when the place was busy. The garden is comfortable, and the service is pleasant, friendly, prompt, and fun. We didn't have a room. Highly recommended in any case.

Definitely NOT recommended and doesn't do justice to beautiful Wernigerode at all!!! The feeling that the customer is king, right down to delicious food, is foreign to the Eselskrug...!!! So find another restaurant in beautiful Wernigerode and let us pamper your palate and your soul!!!

I have no idea what the food is like; we didn't get that far. We got bogged down in a heated argument because they only accept cash or debit cards over €25. I don't always carry €100 or more in my wallet just to go out to eat as a family. I also don't understand the reference to high fees; with meal prices of €20, that's already factored in, and other restaurants manage it too. We then moved to another restaurant and had a nice (and cheaper) evening, which we were able to pay with cards.

A pleasant restaurant with an appealing menu. A snotty landlady makes you feel superfluous and annoying as a guest, yet at home, as is typical in large bars. Unfortunately, the highly praised dessert was nothing special; in fact, it was downright boring. Whipped cream with glass cherries and simple ice cream with cream puffs could also be had in really good ready-made versions. Based on the menu alone, we would have gladly returned to try the dishes again – but we changed our minds.

We stayed in the holiday apartment next door and had dinner at the Eselskrug. It was truly delicious, top-quality food, large portions, and reasonable prices. The service was friendly and good. Highly recommended!

The food was okay. But the service was extremely unfriendly. This is how I imagine food distribution in a women's prison. Debit card only (the waiter checks the card beforehand) and over €25 allowed.

Service was terrible!!! I'll apologize for my presence next time (which won't happen). It would be nice if the notice on the fence didn't tell people how to pay. The venison burger was unloving and tasteless. Covered in cranberry jam.

The restaurant "Zum Eselskrug" scores highly with its fantastic location – right next to a busy road and a railway line. If you want to enjoy the romantic sound of passing trains and cars while eating in the summer, this is the place to be. The beer garden, once green and inviting according to the pictures, has since deteriorated somewhat – instead, there are parking spaces right in the middle. Nothing says "cozy dining" like a diesel engine starting up three meters from your salad. The food was... okay. Not bad, not good – just there. Nothing to be upset about, but unfortunately nothing that really lived up to the asking price either. A little more quality or a little less price – both would be a step in the right direction. The service was... let's say: special. If you appreciate a direct, unvarnished tone and are happy to engage in brief discussions when ordering or paying, you'll certainly be well served here. For me, this isn't the style that would encourage me to return. The bottom line: There are definitely cozier restaurants in Wernigerode with better value for money – but if you're curious, like railway nostalgia and unnecessary discussions, you can see for yourself.

We can't comment on the rooms/apartment, as we were only there for dinner. The food was very, very good. We had the cabbage rolls with potatoes and the potatoes with herb curd and salad. We received a friendly welcome and were served promptly as soon as the table was ready. Drinks arrived promptly, and the food didn't take long to arrive, even though the waitress was alone. The staff were really prompt and always friendly. The restaurant is right next to the Brockenbahn tracks; we even saw them pass by once. The outdoor area wasn't open today, but with the worsening weather, it wouldn't have been much fun anyway.

I can't comment on the rooms, but the food and especially the service were very good/excellent. The eight of us "siblings" were warmly welcomed by Anja and served excellently throughout the evening. We quickly felt at home, as Anja, with her uncomplicated manner, established a direct connection with each of us. The evening was accordingly enjoyable. If we're ever in Wernigerrode again, we'll definitely find our way back to the Eselskrug.

We were there for dinner, we wanted to pay with a VISA debit card, which the boss noticed and gave us a hard time and told the colleague who wanted to settle the bill that it wasn't possible, only EC cards would work - she didn't even want to hear our objection

Service was very friendly. The food, however, was okay. For the price, you'd definitely expect more. It felt like everything, except for the fried potatoes, was a convenience store item... What a shame!

Everything was fine, but it was clear the staff was tired and desperately needed reinforcements. The food was great, but the wait was always disappointing.

We went there for dinner at 7:30 p.m., but the answer on the phone was that they didn't accept table reservations; they just dropped by. We had a seat, a nice atmosphere, the food was delicious, there wasn't a long wait, and the staff was friendly. Conveniently located at the Westerntorkreuzung (Western Gate Crossing), you can also sit outside, and the HSB trains pass by. Highly recommended!!!

Went there spontaneously for dinner today. It is a rustic restaurant with a very nice boss. We once had asparagus (which was a dream) with potatoes, hollandaise sauce and brown butter and then the venison goulash (which was a good portion) with dumplings was also very tasty. We felt comfortable and will come back on our next visit.

Have had a week's stay at the inn. You should not expect a luxury stay. But you have to expect a stay. Where the family that owns the place. Has and shows a love for the place and their guests. Understood in the sense that you are met by a warm welcome. Love for food. And a good dose of whimsy.

We were spontaneous last week, after an excursion, on vacation there. A call was enough and a place (8 Pers) was made possible for us despite a full restaurant. Thanks again for that. The food was good and sufficient. Special requests (food intolerance) were addressed immediately. The service is very friendly and accommodating and puts everyone in a good mood. Children are very welcome here. There is even a specially lovingly designed children's menu. If we are in the Harz again, we will definitely come back to you. We can recommend the Esekskrug restaurant to everyone.

I have never eaten such a good piece of meat. The ladies made the evening an experience for us in a Saxon way.

After a tour with the Brockenbahn, we were looking for a restaurant that could spontaneously offer us a place to eat with two families (8 people in total). At the Eselskrug we received a very friendly and warm welcome (from the boss). The service (mostly the boss herself) was very attentive and in the mood for some jokes. The food was also very tasty and special requests (due to food intolerance) were implemented without any problems. We felt very comfortable. The lovingly designed guest room in these time-honored walls invites you to linger in comfort. Our children also felt welcome, which is certainly due, among other things, to the fact that the waitress noticed their names and from then on addressed the children by their names (Kerstin and Leonie). It's definitely not the last time we've been here and we can only recommend a visit!

We were here for lunch on Easter Monday and were served very friendly and attentive. The food was excellent and the portion from the senior menu was just right. For the oldest inn in Wernigerode I would have imagined the inventory to be more rustic, but that was secondary. The "Eselskrug" with a large beer garden is located on the narrow-gauge railway line and if you're lucky, it will pass by. We'd love to come back.

We spontaneously visited Wernigerode. We received a warm welcome at the inn, and our dog was immediately given fresh water. Great... I ordered Harzer Sülze (Harz aspic) with fried potatoes, which turned out to be an excellent choice. The remoulade was homemade, as advertised, the aspic was delicious, and the fried potatoes were well-seasoned and not too light or too dark, so perfect... Thank you for this wonderful meal!!! 👍

The oldest inn in Wernigerode right on the route of the Harz narrow-gauge railway, it rumbles a bit loudly when the train passes by. Service is charming and always has a nice saying on their lips. The food was good and sufficient.

Year on year, the kitchen of the famous 'Zum Eselskrug' delivers quality dishes. Service is friendly and fast. The sunny terrace is only a few meters away from the HSB railway.

The donkey jug is very lovingly decorated. The boss served us. Very funny and super nice, as if we've known each other for 100 years. Now about the food. The cabbage roll was delicious as was the liver that my husband had with mashed potatoes. That wasn't the last visit. We have been going to the Harz for years. Tried this restaurant today. Ambience simple, but we liked it. Service by the boss was extremely friendly. However, the food didn't convince us. My liver was dry and too hard, and instead of warm beans there was a cold bean salad on the plate, which surprised me: mashed potatoes. There was a lack of sauce, which unfortunately wasn't available at all. The other meal was schnitzel, unfortunately too dry as it was too flat. It was honestly far too expensive for that. Regardless, we thank you for the friendly welcome.

There were 10 of us who were in Wernigerode for the chocolate festival and got a table after the second persistent attempt. Admittedly, 10 people at a table are an organizational and nervous challenge 😉. The service was very friendly, everyone had fun, they always kept an overview and were very careful. Despite the full house, drinks were requested several times and the question about dessert was not forgotten. The food was a dream and we absolutely recommend this restaurant. The restaurant seems a bit restless in terms of decoration. The food was okay but not adequate in terms of price-performance ratio. It is positive that smaller dishes are offered as senior plates.

We were ignored at the entrance and when we asked if there was still a table available, we were rudely turned away and sent out. When asked about paying by card, the answer was "reluctantly". The employees are also generally very annoyed.

Nach einer 4-stündigen Zugfahrt hin und zurück vom Brocken kamen wir hungrig im Gasthaus „Zum Elselskrug“ an, dem ältesten Restaurant in Wernigerode. Wir dachten, dass ein traditionsreiches Restaurant uns mit einem herzhaften Essen empfangen würde – stattdessen wurden wir in eine Geschmackswüste entführt! Wir bestellten eine Soljanka und Wildbulette mit Spätzle und Gemüse… Ich bin ja für Salz und Pfeffer auf dem Tisch, aber das bedeutet ja nicht, dass die Küche diese Gewürze nicht benutzen muss. Die Bulette war optimal geschmacksneutral, und wir sind uns nicht sicher, ob da überhaupt „Wild“ drin war. Die Spätzle hatten das Geschmackserlebnis eines leeren Pizzakartons, und das Gemüse musste irgendwo zwischen „meh“ und „who cares“ aus dem Tiefkühler geworfen worden sein. Geschmackshighlight war tatsächlich die Fertigsoße, wobei das Pulver-Einrühren der größte Aufwand war. Die Soljanka war okay. Aber 7,90 € für diese Minisuppentasse wirklich überteuert. Die Bedienung war nett, aber selbst sie hat sich nicht getraut, zu fragen, wie das Essen war, nachdem sie den vollen Teller wieder mitnehmen musste. Ich kann es ihr nicht verdenken – wer möchte schon die Antwort hören, dass das Essen eher einem Geschmacksabenteuer ins Nichts gleich? Wenn du nach einem kulinarischen Abenteuer suchst, das eher wie eine Geschmacksentziehungskur wirkt, dann ist das Gasthaus „Zum Elselskrug“ genau das Richtige für dich.
