I didn't see anything, but it was a really great experience.

A truly extraordinary experience! At Restaurant Finster, you dine in complete darkness – and it changes everything. Upon entering, you're greeted by friendly and cheerful staff and safely shown to your table. At first, it's a little unusual not to see, but after a while, you begin to focus entirely on smell, taste, and sound. The menu was a surprise and absolutely delicious. You try to guess what you're eating. The flavors were exciting and varied, and the portions were generous. What was particularly impressive was how attentive, calm, and humorous the blind waitstaff were. Overall, a fascinating experience that everyone should try at least once. It sharpens your senses and lets you experience food in a completely new way.

The food wasn't entirely to my taste, but the experience was definitely worth it. It's also quite fun trying to guess what you're eating before it's finally revealed. However, you do sit at a table with strangers, so depending on who you're seated next to, that could definitely be less than ideal. Luckily, our tablemates were very nice. Our waiter was also very attentive and friendly. I would highly recommend trying it at least once.

We had an appointment at Finster Restaurant on October 25, 2025, which we were unable to keep. In the dimly lit anteroom to the restaurant, I experienced severe anxiety and had to cut our visit short. The staff were understanding and offered a generous solution. We could reschedule, and the voucher—a gift from our son with his apprentice wages—could be given to someone else and redeemed later. Unfortunately, things didn't go as planned. After contacting family and friends, we were able to offer an appointment in mid-January 2026. However, according to the Finster Restaurant employee, this wasn't possible, as the appointment had to take place in 2025. He asked us to find a date no later than the week of November 10-15, 2025. We made countless phone calls and found a couple of friends who were willing to use our voucher on November 15, 2025. We called the Finster Restaurant employee again and received a rejection for this date as well. It's a Saturday, and there are no more appointments available that day. For two people, two weeks in advance, and with a flexible time? Even with the best will in the world, we can't see how the employee at the Finster Restaurant was genuinely interested in finding a fair solution. Whether this approach was on the instructions of management or solely the employee's responsibility is ultimately irrelevant. The outcome remains the same for us. We paid €124.90 to the Finster Restaurant without receiving anything in return. However, I would like to mention something positive. Guests who were able to visit the restaurant were enthusiastic, especially praising the food. This makes the whole experience doubly disappointing for us. In short, if you're certain you won't experience claustrophobia in the dark, it might be a pleasant experience. Otherwise, you're simply out of luck. This, unfortunately, is our experience.

We received a wonderfully warm and friendly welcome, and later Siggi guided and served us throughout our meal. He's an incredibly kind and funny guy. We felt completely at ease and will definitely be back!

It was a very nice evening. It's a good insight into the world of blindness. No, you absolutely can't see anything 😅 The food was good, not exactly a highlight, but it tasted good. What will definitely stay in our memories is our waiter Siggi, who was absolutely lovely and always asked if everything was alright. It's definitely a must for anyone who wants to switch off their sense of sight for a while. PS: You can imagine the pictures yourself, just look at them 🙈

A sobering experience with a bright spot in the service First of all, a big thank you to Sigi, our waiter, a true professional, who started the evening off pleasantly with attentive and friendly service. Without him, the visit would have been considerably more disappointing. The problem began with the food. It's not about the portion size, but about the quality and taste. And unfortunately, this was a complete disappointment. In an atmosphere like this, the food should really shine to be convincing. Instead, it was simply inedible, and that's putting it politely. The overall impression is unfortunately sobering. As a guest, you quickly feel taken advantage of. It's a shame about the good service, but we definitely won't be returning.

Today was our first time there, but it won't be our last. We received a very friendly welcome. The entire team is simply fantastic. Our waitress, Julie, was super nice and always had a witty remark. We had the four-course menu, and everything was delicious. Eating in the dark is simply an experience and highly recommended.

We were here today for my husband's birthday. It was a wonderful evening from start to finish, with plenty of humor and lasting memories. My husband had the beef menu and I had the vegan menu. We were able to indicate any food allergies or food preferences, and they were accommodated. The service and the welcome were warm and welcoming. The ambiance was unmistakable, as you can enjoy your meal more mindfully and consciously in the dark, without any distractions. The food was freshly prepared, very well seasoned, and the meat was excellent. The service was very attentive and prompt. We would come back again and again and definitely recommend it. The experience of eating in the dark is certainly something special. The server was very nice. But unfortunately, the food was quite weak: the peppers in my main course showed signs of being taken from the top layer of a very burnt vegetable. My friend's vegetables were only lukewarm, and the small piece of meat was very fatty. The dessert also didn't taste very good, and we didn't finish it. It's a shame, since for around €50 per person, we expected high-quality food.

Very nice waiter Very attentive We enjoyed the food. You receive instructions on how to behave. You have to leave your bags, cell phone, etc. before entering the dining room. You are first led into a sort of anteroom, where you can get used to the darkness. Then the waiter leads us in a caravan to our seats. The fun begins. One criticism I noticed was the close proximity to the neighboring table.

Very tasty food, good service, and simply a fantastic experience. Despite the darkness, we felt very comfortable. The relaxed and personal atmosphere calmed us down. You can choose from various menus and the number of courses in advance. Intolerances and dietary preferences are catered for individually. At the end, you'll be told what you had on your plate. Parking is available in the nearby parking garage of the Essen University Hospital. It's only a 5-minute walk from there. We'd be happy to come back anytime.

Yesterday I was at the Finster restaurant for the first time. 10/5 stars. If you want to do something special and eat really well, then go there. To explain, it's completely dark there. The waiters are all blind or severely visually impaired. You can choose from seven menus, e.g., vegetarian, poultry, Mediterranean, etc. But you don't know beforehand what you'll get. A completely different kind of sensory experience. The food is sooo good. Afterward, they ask you what you recognized before you find out what it really was. The waiters are all super friendly and in a good mood. There was a lot of laughter. Go for it :)

Visibility in the restaurant is absolutely zero; it's just dark. So, just in case you spill something, don't wear your best clothes. The food was freshly prepared and truly delicious. You can choose from a 3- or 4-course menu with beef, pork, poultry, or fish. I think there's also a vegetarian option? As someone who is "forced to go blind," we were given excellent care by a truly blind person.

We would particularly like to emphasize the concept of the restaurant, which employs blind and visually impaired people as service staff. It was impressive to experience the calm, professionalism, and warmth with which they performed their duties. The interaction was always respectful and attentive, so we felt comfortable and well looked after at all times. The menu was only roughly described in advance, which further enhanced the element of surprise during the meal. Without using our sight, our other senses were more intensely engaged. Taste, smell, texture, and sounds were perceived more consciously. Each course was a little journey, where we tried to guess the ingredients and savor them. It was a completely new culinary experience that we will remember for a long time. The entire evening was also very well-planned. From entry to departure, everything was structured, relaxed, and without any time pressure. It was particularly nice that questions were answered openly and friendly, and that we truly felt welcome as guests. We went home with a deep respect for the people who work there and a new appreciation for things that we often take for granted in everyday life. 120/100. The place totally delivers. The experience: you arrive at a what looks like a corner bar and are greeted by the nice staff with a sense of humor. You decide for your menu style (fish, beef, vegetarian etc) and mention any dietary restrictions you might have. Then you get picked up by one of the waiters ( they are blind) and they bring you into the restaurant which is pitch black. You'll dine and have around 2 hrs of an experience. The food is very very good. They have a changing menu so don't be afraid of visiting it more than once.

We wanted something special for our wedding anniversary and tried "Finster" in Essen. We were thrilled from the very first moment. We received a very warm welcome in the (still bright) entrance area. Cell phones had to be turned off/on silent and put in our bags, which were then handed over. We were introduced to Julie, a very charming and friendly (blind) server. She led us into the restaurant and seated us. We enjoyed a four-course meal, and it was an absolutely recommendable experience. The food was delicious and the service was first-class! We've never been served with such humor, friendliness, and friendliness. Julie addressed the topic of "blindness" with irony and wit, and she repeatedly made us laugh and smile. She guided us excellently, showing us where things were on the table, etc. Without her, we would have been completely lost. The fascination grew by the minute. Without a watch, we lost all sense of time. At the end, we had a chat with the owner, who also greeted us with great warmth. We will definitely recommend "Finster" and will come back ourselves. We were there with the whole family. Overall, it was a unique and very exciting experience! We were in the right-hand room of the two and had a world-class waiter, Pedro. We were in the room for a total of two hours, but it felt like maybe an hour. The prices are a bit steep for the food, but in the end, it's all about the experience! You can't really see anything in the room (!) and you have to get used to the darkness in the anteroom. Overall, a very unique and special experience!

What can I say? It was an experience. Absolutely accommodating. Incredibly good service, and the food is terrific. Even if it's a little strange at first, you get used to it relatively quickly, and in many situations, thoughts arise that you'd never have considered before. A great concept! Big compliments.

The friendly staff, especially Yunus, who looked after us that evening—that's what you should call it, since you can't see anything—deserves our praise. We had "Mediterranean and vegetarian" and it was absolutely delicious. The taste is so intense and surprising. Of course, the restaurant can't change the parking situation—but it's absolutely precarious...you'll have to be lucky to find a spot. So leave half an hour early!!

But the experience was unique. It really was something very special. You really couldn't see anything at all. I imagined you'd at least be able to see something. But no. Pitch black. Mahmoud was so incredibly friendly and kind. His presence made everything so beautiful. Truly the best staff I've ever had. It really made my vacation more beautiful. I can only recommend it to everyone. Come along! It's worth it.

Yesterday, seven of us went to a dark restaurant for the first time. It's a special experience to eat and drink in complete darkness as a blind person. But no one spilled anything, and all the glasses and plates remained intact. You get used to just feeling everything on the table fairly quickly. We all instinctively developed the same technique for checking whether the plate is empty, using our fingers to "see" 😅. The staff are super friendly and had fun and joked around the whole time. I would go back anytime. The food was absolutely delicious, both the meat dishes and the vegan and vegetarian options. At the end, we stood outside with Eddi and played a guessing game with him about what we had actually eaten. I think it's great that there are actually severely visually impaired and blind people working here, who can shine with their own strengths. It was a wonderful evening! A tiny note: the portions could have been a bit larger, but the food was consistently delicious and reasonably priced for 3-4 courses; you'd pay the same amount for starters and dessert in other restaurants.

You are led to your table by a visually impaired or blind service employee in a pitch-black room; you can't really see ANYTHING. Nevertheless, we felt well-instructed and safe. Depending on the menu you chose, the food was brought to your table promptly. The handover took place with a certain amount of hand contact – the service employees moved through the room so confidently and naturally, I found that very impressive. The food tasted excellent; there was absolutely nothing to complain about. We also thought it was great that two service employees shared a little about themselves, how they came to be visually impaired/blind, and how they experience life. Absolutely interesting and so personal at the same time. I have so much respect for how full of life they seemed, how open they were, how communicative and humorous they were, how strong they really are (in my eyes!) It was a really exciting and wonderful experience for us to be able to experience a "small" change of perspective for a moment. Because you can't see anything, you focus on your food and your surroundings in a completely different way. You concentrate more on your sense of hearing and touch, and you try to imagine in your mind's eye what might be in front of you and how best to handle it so that you can get it into your mouth – and that actually works very well! You suddenly taste with full force what you'd otherwise only chew on the side. The crew? All blind or visually impaired, but the job they do is something many other restaurants could learn a thing or two from. Relaxed, always ready with a joke, but still highly professional. Mahmoud, in particular, sticks in your head. Polite, warm, incredibly personable. The food itself? A surprise menu. You don't know beforehand what's coming. Of course, you can choose from various options and say what you absolutely don't like. But what comes next is a real taste sensation. It's all about sniffing, tasting, and savoring. In the dead of night. No distractions, no frills. Just you, your fingers, and your sense of taste. The Sheriff's conclusion: Anyone who leaves here has experienced something. Not a joke, not a gimmick, but a genuine appreciation for the food and the people who serve it. It's a must-do experience. And anyone who says they need to use their eyes while eating should train their imagination, but stop complaining. This is about feeling, tasting, and experiencing. Dark, but light at heart.

It was a truly amazing experience eating in the dark and not knowing what was on your plate! The food was delicious, and the feeling was truly special, as you couldn't even see your hand in front of your face. The staff were incredibly friendly, and the highlight was our server in the dark: Eddie. He was funny, informative, and his cheerful demeanor made our evening in February this year unforgettable. We were there with two families (each with two adults and two teenage children) and had a blast! We'd love to come back!

After your meal, you can chat with the staff and discuss what you had on your plate. The toilets are a bit dated, but they have a fresh coat of paint and new lighting, and everything is fine.

A fantastic experience for all the senses. The situation is very unfamiliar at first, but you eventually get used to it. The waiters were all very friendly and joking. The food was delicious and served quickly. The only thing that could be improved, in our opinion, is the organization in the entrance area. Everyone just seemed to line up at the cash register and wait to be told what to do. We think a small sign saying "Registration and Cashier" would have been helpful. A small notice at the reception desk saying "We'll take your jackets and bags here first. You'll then place your order here before you're taken to the dining area" would also avoid misunderstandings and create clarity, which would probably speed up the process. We really enjoyed it and would come again.

A pleasant experience. The staff is super friendly. Unfortunately, there was a very loud group at the next table, so we sat in the dark and couldn't even have a normal conversation. Unfortunately, I wasn't that impressed with the food. The mashed potatoes were lukewarm and the meat was quite stringy. I would have expected a bit more for the price.

I was there with my boyfriend yesterday, and it was a unique experience that everyone should experience at least once. It's so dark that you can't see anything at all and have to carefully feel everything. Your senses are heightened, and you experience everything, especially your sense of taste and smell, in a completely different way. The food is really well prepared and perfectly seasoned. Nothing was left to be desired. The staff are all very friendly and funny. Our waiter, Pedro, was amazing. Super friendly, fast, funny, and absolutely in his element. We will definitely be back. What a truly formative experience... Positive, but also a little scary for me... You're sitting in a completely dark room, you can't see your hand in front of your face, but you're in good hands with the lovely service team. The darkness was really oppressive for me, but the food made up for it... Absolutely delicious, and you really taste different when you can't see anything... We'll definitely be back...

Forget the restaurant and the food. It was incredibly delicious anyway. But Pedro, our waiter, was the real highlight. He handed us the "colorful" salad – with a smile, even though he has no concept of color. No idea what a spoon looks like. Or the sky. And yet – or perhaps precisely because of that – he radiated a warmth that can't be learned. You could see, even though you couldn't see anything. Conclusion: An evening like this changes something within you. You begin to listen, feel, and appreciate more consciously. And you ask yourself: How often do we rely on what we see – and miss the essential? Pedro didn't just guide us through the darkness. He showed us what really matters.❤️

A lovely, warm welcome, everyone was very friendly and even ready to joke around. You choose your favorite dish before the start, and then you're escorted to your table by a personal waiter. There was so much to touch and taste, truly delicious, and highly recommended. A huge thank you to Pedro, our waiter, who made the evening even more special with his charm and wit.

The service and the food were simply fabulous. The waiters, especially Mahmoud, did a fantastic job. The wit and courtesy created the perfect atmosphere. There's not much to say about the interior. I didn't see it (haha). We'll be back.
