Today we visited the Finster restaurant and would like to share our impressions because this evening was truly special for us. We arrived with curiosity and a certain amount of excitement, as it was our first visit to a restaurant of this type. What we experienced far exceeded our expectations. The welcome was warm and well-organized. From the moment we entered, we felt safe and comfortable. The staff were very friendly, well-prepared, and confidently guided us throughout the evening. We would particularly like to emphasize the concept of the restaurant, which employs blind and visually impaired people as service staff. It was impressive to experience the calm, professionalism, and warmth with which they performed their duties. The interaction was always respectful and attentive, so we felt comfortable and well looked after at all times. The menu was only roughly described in advance, which further enhanced the element of surprise during the meal. Without using our sight, our other senses were more intensely engaged. Taste, smell, texture, and sounds were perceived more consciously. Each course was a little journey, where we tried to guess the ingredients and savor them. It was a completely new culinary experience that we will remember for a long time. The entire evening was also very well-planned. From entry to departure, everything was structured, relaxed, and without any time pressure. It was particularly nice that questions were answered openly and friendly, and that we truly felt welcome as guests. We went home with a deep respect for the people who work there and a new appreciation for things that we often take for granted in everyday life. Finster is not just a place for good food, but also for genuine encounters and a valuable change of perspective. Many thanks to the entire team for this unforgettable evening!!! 120/100. The place totally delivers. The experience: you arrive at a what looks like a corner bar and are greeted by the nice staff with a sense of humor. You decide for your menu style (fish, beef, vegetarian etc) and mention any dietary restrictions you might have. Then you get picked up by one of the waiters ( they are blind) and they bring you into the restaurant which is pitch black. You'll dine and have around 2 hrs of an experience. The food is very very good. They have a changing menu so don't be afraid of visiting it more than once.

We wanted something special for our wedding anniversary and tried "Finster" in Essen. We were thrilled from the very first moment. We received a very warm welcome in the (still bright) entrance area. Cell phones had to be turned off/on silent and put in our bags, which were then handed over. We were introduced to Julie, a very charming and friendly (blind) server. She led us into the restaurant and seated us. We enjoyed a four-course meal, and it was an absolutely recommendable experience. The food was delicious and the service was first-class! We've never been served with such humor, friendliness, and friendliness. Julie addressed the topic of "blindness" with irony and wit, and she repeatedly made us laugh and smile. She guided us excellently, showing us where things were on the table, etc. Without her, we would have been completely lost. The fascination grew by the minute. Without a watch, we lost all sense of time. At the end, we had a chat with the owner, who also greeted us with great warmth. We will definitely recommend "Finster" and will come back ourselves. We were there with the whole family. Overall, it was a unique and very exciting experience! We were in the right-hand room of the two and had a world-class waiter, Pedro. We were in the room for a total of two hours, but it felt like maybe an hour. The prices are a bit steep for the food, but in the end, it's all about the experience! You can't really see anything in the room (!) and you have to get used to the darkness in the anteroom. Overall, a very unique and special experience!

What can I say? It was an experience. Absolutely accommodating. Incredibly good service, and the food is terrific. Even if it's a little strange at first, you get used to it relatively quickly, and in many situations, thoughts arise that you'd never have considered before. A great concept! Big compliments.

Our daughter gave us a voucher for two. In short, it was a fantastic experience. The friendly staff, especially Yunus, who looked after us that evening—that's what you should call it, since you can't see anything—deserves our praise. We had "Mediterranean and vegetarian" and it was absolutely delicious. The taste is so intense and surprising. Of course, the restaurant can't change the parking situation—but it's absolutely precarious...you'll have to be lucky to find a spot. So leave half an hour early!!

We had dinner in the dark today. We were served by the lovely Mahmoud (I hope that's spelled correctly). The food itself was okay, but nothing special (still delicious, don't get me wrong). But the experience was unique. It really was something very special. You really couldn't see anything at all. I imagined you'd at least be able to see something. But no. Pitch black. Mahmoud was so incredibly friendly and kind. His presence made everything so beautiful. Truly the best staff I've ever had. It really made my vacation more beautiful. I can only recommend it to everyone. Come along! It's worth it.

Yesterday, seven of us went to a dark restaurant for the first time. It's a special experience to eat and drink in complete darkness as a blind person. But no one spilled anything, and all the glasses and plates remained intact. You get used to just feeling everything on the table fairly quickly. We all instinctively developed the same technique for checking whether the plate is empty, using our fingers to "see" 😅. The staff are super friendly and had fun and joked around the whole time. I would go back anytime. The food was absolutely delicious, both the meat dishes and the vegan and vegetarian options. At the end, we stood outside with Eddi and played a guessing game with him about what we had actually eaten. I think it's great that there are actually severely visually impaired and blind people working here, who can shine with their own strengths. It was a wonderful evening! A tiny note: the portions could have been a bit larger, but the food was consistently delicious and reasonably priced for 3-4 courses; you'd pay the same amount for starters and dessert in other restaurants.

A truly special experience! The dinner in the dark was fascinating – completely without light, but with even more sensory impressions (digital ditox, since you hand over your phone :D). The food was delicious; you guess what you're eating – that's exactly what makes it so appealing! We were warmly welcomed at the entrance with Ruhrpott charm. The waiter, Petro, was super friendly, visibly (or rather, noticeably) enjoying his job, and we felt completely at ease. Highly recommended for anyone looking for something different! Spoiler alert: At the end, the chef reveals what menu he's conjured up.

Today we were finally able to redeem our meal voucher after years, and we would have definitely missed out if we hadn't finally made it! We were greeted so warmly and humorously, we immediately felt very welcome. You are led to your table by a visually impaired or blind service employee in a pitch-black room; you can't really see ANYTHING. Nevertheless, we felt well-instructed and safe. Depending on the menu you chose, the food was brought to your table promptly. The handover took place with a certain amount of hand contact – the service employees moved through the room so confidently and naturally, I found that very impressive. The food tasted excellent; there was absolutely nothing to complain about. We also thought it was great that two service employees shared a little about themselves, how they came to be visually impaired/blind, and how they experience life. Absolutely interesting and so personal at the same time. I have so much respect for how full of life they seemed, how open they were, how communicative and humorous they were, how strong they really are (in my eyes!) It was a really exciting and wonderful experience for us to be able to experience a "small" change of perspective for a moment. Because you can't see anything, you focus on your food and your surroundings in a completely different way. You concentrate more on your sense of hearing and touch, and you try to imagine in your mind's eye what might be in front of you and how best to handle it so that you can get it into your mouth – and that actually works very well! Mahmoud, in particular, sticks in your head. Polite, warm, incredibly personable. The food itself? A surprise menu. You don't know beforehand what's coming. Of course, you can choose from various options and say what you absolutely don't like. But what comes next is a real taste sensation. It's all about sniffing, tasting, and savoring. In the dead of night. No distractions, no frills. Just you, your fingers, and your sense of taste. The Sheriff's conclusion: Anyone who leaves here has experienced something. Not a joke, not a gimmick, but a genuine appreciation for the food and the people who serve it. It's a must-do experience. And anyone who says they need to use their eyes while eating should train their imagination, but stop complaining. This is about feeling, tasting, and experiencing. Dark, but light at heart.

It was a truly amazing experience eating in the dark and not knowing what was on your plate! The food was delicious, and the feeling was truly special, as you couldn't even see your hand in front of your face. The staff were incredibly friendly, and the highlight was our server in the dark: Eddie. He was funny, informative, and his cheerful demeanor made our evening in February this year unforgettable. We were there with two families (each with two adults and two teenage children) and had a blast! We'd love to come back!

An experience you can't miss. Eating and drinking in the dark. The reception was super relaxed and fun. The waiters were super nice and friendly. The food was great. After your meal, you can chat with the staff and discuss what you had on your plate. The toilets are a bit dated, but they have a fresh coat of paint and new lighting, and everything is fine.

The food was delicious and served quickly. The only thing that could be improved, in our opinion, is the organization in the entrance area. Everyone just seemed to line up at the cash register and wait to be told what to do. We think a small sign saying "Registration and Cashier" would have been helpful. A small notice at the reception desk saying "We'll take your jackets and bags here first. You'll then place your order here before you're taken to the dining area" would also avoid misunderstandings and create clarity, which would probably speed up the process. We really enjoyed it and would come again.

You're sitting in a completely dark room, you can't see your hand in front of your face, but you're in good hands with the lovely service team. Forget the restaurant and the food. It was incredibly delicious anyway. But Pedro, our waiter, was the real highlight. He handed us the "colorful" salad – with a smile, even though he has no concept of color. No idea what a spoon looks like. Or the sky. And yet – or perhaps precisely because of that – he radiated a warmth that can't be learned. You could see, even though you couldn't see anything. Conclusion: An evening like this changes something within you. You begin to listen, feel, and appreciate more consciously. And you ask yourself: How often do we rely on what we see – and miss the essential? Pedro didn't just guide us through the darkness. He showed us what really matters.❤️

There was so much to touch and taste, truly delicious, and highly recommended. A huge thank you to Pedro, our waiter, who made the evening even more special with his charm and wit.

But I think the concept that blind or almost blind people work there is the best. How structured the waiters are is amazing and the orientation they have. And above all, how they can deal with the volume that exists there at times. I think this concept and the world you immerse yourself in is an absolute must experience for everyone and I can only recommend it to everyone. Everyone is really nice there. When you go to a dark restaurant, it's difficult to talk about ambience. Because at the front of the reception room is an old pub. You are warmly welcomed and feel comfortable. The service is super nice and funny. The food is tasty, but nothing special. The really unique thing about it is that you guess wrong about what you ate. We were surprised. That was a really great experience.

Run-down, dirty corner bar (in the pub in front of it, which is basically the waiting room, and in the toilets you could see the poor condition of the place, and in the dark dining room we could feel the balled-up napkins of previous guests on our table), unfriendly staff in the anteroom, an unbelievable noise level in the restaurant, nasty food (started shockingly: completely soggy crispbread with a nasty herb curd as a "greeting". the kitchen") ... We couldn't finish any of the dishes and avoided dessert. The owner of the restaurant didn't want to hear our criticism and said it was the first time he had heard it. It must be up to us then. I'm really not a fussy person, but I've never been so disgusted in a restaurant. Especially in a dark restaurant you need trust in the staff, in the kitchen and in hygiene. In addition, given the really high prices, I expect a significantly higher standard at all levels.

We were with you for the third time today. It was another great experience. The food was delicious. We had 1x veggie and 1x fish. Our waiter Pedro was a super nice and funny guy. We will come back a fourth time. He said a sentence that will stay with me forever. He said that many people always say things like: If only you could see the beautiful blue sky. He said that colors are just words for him and since he has been blind since birth, there is nothing he misses. That really touched us. He also said that for him there is no visually beautiful or ugly, but that he can only judge by character. Absolutely defining sentence that shows how superficial some sighted people are. Respect. It was just great.

Exciting to eat a 3-course meal in the dark.

We were given a voucher for Dinner in the Dark and were very excited to see what awaited us here. The parking situation is really not good and not suitable for new drivers. The roads are extremely narrow and you have to be really careful not to damage other cars if you have a big car. The staff at reception was super nice, asked which menu we would like and whether we had any allergies/intolerances, since you can't see what you're eating. It's very unusual to come into such a pitch-dark area at first and probably a little scary for some people. You will be taken to your table by the staff and then left to your own devices, except for bringing you food. If you have any questions or something similar, you can simply call the waiter. We had the vegan 3-course menu and it was super delicious! The dessert wasn't my cup of tea, but my husband was happy about two desserts 🤌🏼 We recommend it to everyone as it is a very interesting experience.

I gave my mom a visit to the Finster for her birthday. It was easy to get there by subway and after a few hundred meters walk from the stop you had already reached the dark place. We were welcomed very friendly and shown straight to our table. We both had the poultry menu and had a lot of fun guessing what was on the fork (or not ;) You are always faced with small new challenges such as the question: "How am I supposed to get the water from the bottle into my glass?" Or “Did I put the napkin to my left or right earlier?” A great experience made even better by the excellent service! I can definitely recommend the Finster!

It's dark, you really can't see anything. I would have thought that you might still be able to see outlines, but no, it's really pitch black. Eddie guided us through the evening, a very great waiter with a lot of humor and fun at work. The food was very tasty. It's truly an experience to eat when you can't see anything. The waiters are super nice and you felt very comfortable despite the extreme darkness! It's really so dark that you can't see anything. You absolutely have to try this! From the reception to the service, everything was impeccable. The ambience was dark. Very dark. But it had a certain flair and was truly surprisingly beautiful. Above all, simply interacting with the senses... We each had a 4-course menu (Italian & fish), which was relatively simple and offered nothing "extraordinary" – but the dishes were WELL prepared. Kudos again to everyone there; it definitely won't be our last visit. Highly recommended!

Wir haben gestern einen Gutschein zum "Dinner in the dark" eingelöst! Was für ein Erlebnis 🪄 Es war großartig. Der Sinn des Sehens komplett weg, aber die restlichen Sinne werden aktiviert und der Geschmackssinn bekommt eine völlig andere Bedeutung. IRRE ! Das blinde bzw stark sehbehinderte Personal war der Knaller: ein toller Service, humorvoll und es wurde eine seitenverkehrte Unsicherheit der "Sehenden" so kompetent von den Mitarbeitern vermittelt, dass ich mich sehr wohl gefühlt habe. Hast Du schon mal im völlig dunklen gegessen, Dir etwas eingeschüttet und warst auf Deinen Tastsinn angewiesen, um Teller, Glas und Besteck zu händeln ? Ich bin beeindruckt, wie das unsere gehandicapten Mitmenschen bewältigen. Also mega Respekt, Wertschätzung und Hochachtung ❣️ Ich empfehle das Restaurant "Finster" !!!

We received vouchers as gifts from our children. Table reservation went great. The reception/entrance area is already darkened accordingly. You were warmly welcomed, in the next step you hand over your personal belongings, i.e. especially anything that can generate light such as mobile devices, smartwatches, etc. After selecting the dish/menu, you will be led to your table by a blind waiter/waitress a la polonaise. It's really dark in the dining room! You can't see anything, absolutely nothing! We then ordered drinks. Afterwards we started with the starter, you have to say the crew had the timing well under control from course to course, The meat was great in terms of taste and consistency. The drawback here is that the food was only slightly warm, not hot. Unfortunately for us, our question about what was on the plate was consistently ignored. Duration of stay from entry to departure 1 hour 45 minutes.

All items, including bags and watches, are left at the cloakroom to ensure that all guests have a unique experience and that no (not even the smallest) source of light disturbs them. We were there for the first time today and it was absolutely amazing. When our waiter Mahmmoud led us into the dining room, we initially had an uneasy feeling because we were really in the pitch dark and couldn't even see our own hands in front of our eyes. But with his friendly and funny manner he immediately took away our fears. We had the beef, game and Mediterranean menu with three courses and a “fixed” starter. All three courses were delicious, the meat was tender and high quality. We all enjoyed it very much. The price was more than reasonable, three courses for around €55 per person plus drinks. And the experience is basically free (because everywhere else you pay the same or even more for three courses). Really highly recommended, we will definitely come back again! Thanks!

Really cool experience. It was fun and something unusual and new. You are guided and served by real blind people, which I think is great. The food is actually of a good standard and really tasty, I wasn't expecting so much and thought it was more practical. What's a bit annoying is that it's very loud when eating in a dark, probably bare room when all the tables are occupied. Acoustic panels or sound absorbers would be helpful here. That was unpleasantly tiring. Otherwise it would have been perfect.

A wonderful, exciting experience. Great service, incredibly nice and funny waiters. That took away a lot of uncertainty for me! The food tasted delicious, but unfortunately it didn't suit my personal taste as it was rather special (but I'm also a difficult eater 😂). The birthday surprise was somehow incoherent and I wouldn't book it again. Parking on site was difficult. Unfortunately, the room seemed very small to me, it was loud and stuffy. Overall, it's definitely an experience that everyone should have. We will come back! :)

Very nice reception. A real highlight is the operation. Our waiter Mahmood quickly alleviated our uncertainty, everything was explained well and there was always something to laugh about. The food tasted good and we were able to taste almost everything. All in all a great experience!!!

Definitely worth an experience! From the reception to the counter to the service – everyone was friendly and cool. A huge compliment to Yunus, our waitress. He is blind and still had everything perfectly under control - simply impressive! A true masterpiece that deserves the highest respect. The food was fresh, tasty and highly recommended. It was really a unique experience, the waiters and staff were super laid back. I had the fish menu there, which was really super delicious. You only find out later what you ate, which makes it even more exciting. My friend had the beef menu and really enjoyed it too. The price-performance ratio is really great!

There were five of us there. The service and our service staff were great. The food we were served was good; But when we later "clarified" what we ate, it turned out that none of us had a complete main course: either meat was missing, there was no sauce, one or two side dishes were missing, etc. This shouldn't happen with a price of an average of €50 per menu.

I just wanted to say how great our visit to Restaurant Finster was! The atmosphere was super cozy and the employees were all really nice and helpful. The food was just great and everything fit perfectly. We can definitely recommend the restaurant and are already looking forward to our next visit!

About the story: -Online table reserved for 2 people -Clearly stated that there is a STRONG allergy to any kind of nuts -What was in the dessert all of a sudden... NUTS -accordingly, my companion had a strong allergic reaction -The ONLY one who helped us in this situation was the waiter Pedro -The rest of the employees were hardly interested and were simply overwhelmed -I had the list shown on site, it was clearly listed with the severe nut allergy, but no one noticed it -Afterwards, after several questions, we were finally able to speak to the boss on the phone, who also blamed us for the whole thing and also wanted the normal price at the beginning -Finally agreed to 30% of the price after a long discussion so that my companion could finally receive medical treatment and not have to wait any longer. -CONCLUSION: Absolute impudence from employees and boss, they didn't even ask how my companion was doing. Totally unfriendly! The only one who helped was the waiter Pedro, who was also visibly affected and was the ONLY one who helped us. Thanks Pedro. I will never eat in this store again and legal action will be taken if necessary.

It was my first time in a dark restaurant (01/27/25). You really have to say, it's a different kind of experience. You can hear the noises and the people sitting there too. The meal consisted of a 3-course menu. I ordered the poultry menu. I won't go into it in more detail because you can get a "picture" of it yourself :D. In terms of taste, it was also a new experience, as your head sometimes imagines different things. You also notice at first how difficult it is to eat when you can't see anything. But it tasted incredibly good and we had a lot of fun. Yunus was our waiter and you could generally see how the service staff thrive on their job. You could tell that in every second and you felt very, very well looked after. The dark restaurant Finster is worth every cent. Absolutely recommended! PS: Arriving early definitely makes sense. The parking situation on site is quite difficult.

A meaningful experience. We received a very warm welcome and immediately felt at home. The service staff were very courteous, friendly and enjoyed their work. The menu selection was good. Something for everyone. The food tasted very good. Parking is difficult in the area. Maybe in the university hospital parking garage. Eating in the dark was a challenge.
