Diener Tattersall in Berlin

Last Saturday, I went to Diener Tattersall with friends from Cologne. As a native Berliner, I wanted to show them a taste of authentic Berlin life – after all, Diener has been an institution for decades and has seen a rather illustrious clientele. The food was, as expected, solid and perfectly acceptable. What was completely unacceptable, however, was the tone and attitude of the service staff. The word "host" simply doesn't fit here. The arrogance and disrespect with which guests are treated was embarrassing to me before my visit – because it has absolutely nothing to do with the famous Berlin charm with a heart of gold. As a native of Charlottenburg, I feel I can certainly make this judgment. One couldn't help but wonder: Do these people actually enjoy being treated the way they treat their guests? While other long-established establishments – such as the Terzo Mondo across the street – demonstrate how to delight customers with genuine warmth for many years, at Diener Tattersal, one unfortunately gets the impression that the staff would be much happier without these "pesky guests." It's a shame and, in some ways, truly shameful, because it doesn't reflect well on Berlin. Conclusion: Definitely no longer recommended. When tradition degenerates into an empty facade, the only conclusion is: Yesterday's glory tastes stale today.

Wonderful German cuisine, especially the Hackepeter (raw minced pork).

They have a racist poster hung up in their restaurant. Not very welcoming to people of all cultures. We need to be more inclusive and kind to one another, things like this give the wrong message or impression.

such a lovely and lively place! this is definitely a (hidden) gem in Charlottenburg. the homemade German Food is great, portion sizes are generous. the service is super friendly & fast. interesting mix of people around. note: you will have to share a table with other guests sometimes if you don’t have a reservation, but that’s actually pretty cool in my opinion.

However, you should be aware that the restaurant is almost always very busy, so reservations are strongly recommended to avoid waiting times. Opening hours are late, as the restaurant only opens from 6:00 PM Monday to Saturday, but remains open until late into the night, underscoring the character of a truly cult pub. The service is often described as "original Berlin style" – this refers to a direct, sometimes rustic, yet warm manner that is part of the pub's authentic flair. Guests who appreciate this Berlin "snark" (snark) find the service friendly and attentive. The atmosphere is extremely cozy thanks to the historic furnishings, dark walls, and numerous pictures, transporting visitors back to a bygone Berlin. In summary, Diener Tattersall offers an incomparable culinary and cultural experience: excellent, affordable food in a historic setting that can only be found in this form in Berlin.

Highly recommended 👍 We had the eggs in mustard sauce and the veal schnitzel with fried potatoes. I've rarely eaten so well. The ambiance is rustic but lovely. The service is super friendly. Make sure you make a reservation!

We stumbled across this little restaurant and what a find, I had the sausages with sauerkraut and my sister had the Meatball and potatos, absolutely great , unfortunately we had to sit outside as there was no room inside but the waiter was very attentive as she popped out regularly to see us and of course the beer was very good, went down a treat with out hearty meal

A great place in Charlottenburg! The exquisitely delicious sourdough bread is an experience in itself – crispy crust, moist crumb, full of flavor. Combined with the crackling lard and a freshly tapped beer, it creates a wonderful blend of crackling lard, bread, and beer that's simply a joy. Add to that the friendly service and relaxed atmosphere – we felt completely at home. A true highlight for anyone who loves honest, down-to-earth cuisine.

One of the last authentic Berlin pubs. Great atmosphere, superb food, as it should be. The owner and her team are simply the pinnacle. It couldn't be better.

I was here with friends in May. A typical cult Berlin pub, great atmosphere, and delicious food.

Absolutely! Old West Berlin, Charlottenburg, that's what it is... Delicious 'Schulle in a Kugel' (a kind of ball) and wonderful food. We'd love to come back! See you next time.

What a great place! Fab food, lovely people and a great atmosphere. What a great first meal in Berlin!

Diener proves that true happiness can sometimes be quite simple: a plate of mustard eggs (by far the best in the city!) accompanied by an ice-cold Schulle (a kind of fried egg). That's all it takes to make the day complete. The atmosphere and charm of the establishment are a perfect match for this culinary classic – down-to-earth, honest, and with just the right amount of Berlin soul. If you're not happy here, caviar and champagne probably won't help either.

The atmosphere in this traditional restaurant is fantastic. It’s a place with a long history and the it’s got the look and feel to match. The boulette with potato salad was excellent and there’s also a great selection of draught beers, including kölsch. Service was great too, thank you!

Unfortunately, our visit was disappointing. The service was very unfriendly; you feel completely unwelcome. "Berliner Schnauze" can be charming, but here it simply came across as disrespectful. The lady with the short hair and the older gentleman at the bar, in particular, had a negative impact on the overall atmosphere. While the interior is quaint and beautiful, the poor service completely ruins it. It's a shame! A friendlier tone would have made it much better.

Since April, the new owner (Anna) has been in charge, and she has her place perfectly under control and is incredibly personable. Highly recommended! High-quality German home cooking.

This restaurant is worth a visit for its vintage decor and authentic cuisine. All the dishes we had were very good. Be aware that service is not included in the prices, which can be confusing for tourists. A highly recommended place to discover German cuisine.

Even though they claimed the last orders at 22:30, waitress refused to serve us at 22:00. We felt some sort of discrimination. Not recommended.

Closing time looks like 02AM, but we haven't been served at 10PM.

Nous n’avions pas réservé mais c’est préférable car le restaurant est plein avec les habitués. Service rapide sans problème. Menu avec les plats allemands que nous étions venus chercher. C’est copieux , très bon et cuisine familiale. De quoi passer une bonne soirée avec un rapport qualité /prix plus que convenable. Je recommande si vous recherchez ce type de restaurant.

The Vienna Schnitzel with Fried Potatoes was very good. We had a table outside. Service was ok. Overall very good.

Ended up here through a review… We wanted to eat a good schnitzel somewhere. We succeeded! In this ‘kind of pub-like restaurant’ we were well served and they served us delicious beers and a good meal! Never had such delicious boiled potatoes (which I normally don’t even like 😉) The schnitzel was also really tasty and perfect with our choice for the menu with the asparagus! Everything homemade, even the apple sauce that our son had with the ‘kind of’ rösti pancakes. Delicious and a good atmosphere! Simple but solid and tasty! That’s what we like. No bells and whistles. After a moment of hesitation we ordered Pannacotta for dessert, what a surprise, it was really delicious, also homemade! Small place so reserve in time for inside or go outside on the terrace on spec (no reservations possible) Recommended!

The food and drinks were good but the service was a disaster. We were ignored, treated unkindly and passed over when paying, even though other tables came later and left earlier. Very disappointing.

The food was really good, and the service from the older waitress was very friendly. But we left with a sour taste in our mouths because when my wife asked where the bathroom was, the woman behind the counter made the "I'm watching you" sign with both fingers over her eyes. We couldn't quite understand if she was joking or something. By then, we'd already finished dinner and had asked for the check...

A truly authentic German restaurant through and through. The food is excellent, the ambiance is truly beautiful and well-thought-out, and the service is typical Berlin—sometimes a little unfamiliar, but always efficient.

Super simple, authentic, well-crafted cuisine, with homemade dishes, a very good dessert for us with an excellent sauce for the main course! However, a big downside for the welcome because upon arriving without a reservation we asked the bartender if there was room for two to which he replied no even though there was quite a bit of free space outside so I asked the (bartender) again if we could sit outside because it was free, he pretended not to understand but fortunately for us a nice waitress came to intervene and seated us outside.

The perfect location for that Berlin pub feeling: lots of beer (and wine or other drinks if needed), simple, hearty but delicious food, a rustic ambience and service that is not overly friendly (Berlin, after all), but nevertheless warm and, above all, prompt.

Die Küche ist gut bürgerlich und lecker. Es schmeckt wie Zuhause und die Preise sind moderat. Alle der 3 Bedienungen, die wir vom Platzieren bis zum Kassieren hatten, waren ausnahmslos freundlich und aufmerksam. Bestellt hatten wir Leberkäse mit Spiegelei und Bratkartoffeln sowie Spinat, Kartoffeln und Spiegelei und als Nachtisch den Schokopudding (1x). Als Getränke hatten wir ein Malzbier und ein Kölsch und haben inkl. Trinkgeld 45 Euro bezahlt. Im Lokal selbst ist die Zeit ein wenig stehen geblieben, was aber einfach auch den Charme ausmacht.

Excellent food and low key service.

This is one of the best restaurants in Berlin, 5 stars are actually not enough to describe the quality of Diener. Here tradition is combined with a contemporary atmosphere and a relaxed atmosphere. There is a lot to discover in the restaurant about the history of the place and its founder, the legendary boxer Franz Diener (1901-1969). The only thing that's a bit annoying is that hipsters have been trying to take over the place in recent years. Regulars from all countries unite!

Called earlier and asked for a reservation. Asked another question and that was too much for the incredibly sloppy service. She couldn't even say goodbye, but simply hung up on the call. Why does he ask something like that? Who is this woman? Or who does she think she is? I'm wondering that. Rude to no end. Too bad.

Keine Berliner Küche, aber gutbürgerlich deutsch. Absolut in Ordnung. Bedienung (Besitzerpaar???) leider .recht unfreundlich bis abweisend. Schade.

Family were in town and since the other German restaurant in the Keiz was full I decided to bring them here even though I had had bad experiences before. The restaurant is charming. I gave a score of 3 for the decor not the atmosphere. The charm stops there. This time they had reserved signs on all the tables. We politely asked the waitress when she thought there might be a table available. She turned and with a scowl and utter rudeness said "why don't you ask one of the tables". We were taken back and, frankly, insulted but asked if we could wait. She said "if you want". So we went outside and talked and decide that we would wait for a while. One of us went back in to tell the waitress that we would wait a while and to let us know if a table should become available . She responded with a rude "don't bother there won't be one". She was very, very rude. Now this is the same waitress that was horrible and unwelcoming at my previous visit. I shouldn't have gone back. As for the food, it was mediocre.

I can only recommend it. Table reservation! (Almost) everything happens there. Artists, actors, professors, pensioners and normal people like me. Simply furnished with lots of charm. Lots of photos on the wall (read the story about Tattersall!). Good, fast and friendly service...beer is good, food is good. Sitting outside in summer. Always very happy. I'll be back there in March at the latest...

A really 'quaint' Berlin pub where you can eat very well. Hearty dishes, large portions, friendly and quick service, reasonable price-performance ratio. Rouladen, Königsberger meatballs, brawn fried potatoes and veal slices...all dishes of excellent quality. A chocolate pudding with vanilla sauce......you have to try it. We will come back. With a bit of luck you can find parking spaces. Reservation recommended.

The week before last I was in the servants' room for the third time. This quaint pub is a must when visiting Berlin. Honest and very delicious dishes as well as a delicious beer. Until next time, all the best.

Rustic, warm, honest, hearty and wonderful is how I would describe our stay at Diener. We love coming because of the rustic decor, the great service and the brilliant food, some of which can only be found here. We had meat loaf and stuffed cabbage. But be sure to try the eggs in mustard sauce and other old classics. Thank you.

Just WOW. I'm still blown away! I ate the best dumplings of my life here. The ambience is incredibly beautiful. Super authentic, affordable prices and a very friendly Berlin service, who takes care of the restaurant completely single-handedly and remembers who ordered what at every table. It was very impressive to watch her work. Very big recommendation for lovers of German cuisine. Big selection and it was really quick. There were a lot of older Berliners here, which created a great atmosphere!

Was there yesterday and was shocked at how arrogant the bar tender was,I was always learnt to believe that the customer is king but when you make the people that make YOUR money feel small and worthless then you avoid places like this ...it's ruined my berlin experience....and the beer was bad please clean your pipes .

A beautifully dark cult pub with extremely tasty dishes (like at Mutter's), where you could actually feel really good. But if the gruff manner of one waitress (boss?) is seen as an indispensable part of a Berliner-Schnauze image: it is absolutely dispensable - as the extremely friendly manner of the second waitress proved, which made the stay much more pleasant!

Quaint old restaurant, food was good, waitresses don't fit in this restaurant, don't make the work fun, there should be a few smarter ladies with more charm working there.

Wordless ‘greeting’; After 20 minutes of waiting, with no possibility of ordering, we left. It used to be an original Berlin 'institution'; It's a shame that this is how guests are treated in a traditional hotel.

Man scheint es nicht nötig zu haben. Leider wurden wir nach 20 Minuten Wartezeit nicht bedient. Früher war es mal ein Traditionshaus mit Urberliner Küche.

An atmosphere with the smell of mothballs, a potato salad worse than the one in the supermarket, the attention of the waitress that could be improved and to top it all off, filthy and defective bathrooms. Our intention is not to discredit the place, but to give them constructive criticism.

Nice authentic food in a cosy environment, unfortunately the service was unfriendly and borderline hostile, we did not feel welcome here at all.

An old Berlin restaurant in Charlottenburg with food the way grandma cooked it. Mustard party, eggs with fried potatoes and spinach, Königsberger meatballs - we were thrilled. And on the walls there are photos of previous famous guests. Visitors should definitely reserve in advance.

Inconspicuous from the outside and inside a historic restaurant with a Berlin snout and delicious, home-style German cuisine. Be sure to reserve in advance, otherwise you hardly have a chance, especially on weekends! If you sit near the counter, you can easily have a funny conversation with the employees! Great furnishings and decorations on the walls with photos from the last 60 years…

Pleasant atmosphere, decent beers, decent food.

Hier fühlt man sich wohl. Sehr gemütlich. Hatten eine Katoffelsuppe und einen Käseteller. Deutsche Küche wie bei der Großmutter . Die Suppe war ausgezeichnet, eine der besten die ich je hatte. Der Käseteller war auch sehr gut. Alles in allem sehr empfehlenswert.

Leider wurden wir unfreundlich und muffig abgewiesen, als wir nur kurz ein Bier trinken wollten. Es war 18 Uhr und das Lokal bis auf wenige Gäste leer...

Absolutely unfriendly shop. At 6 p.m. all tables are reserved and the shop is almost empty. If you ask, you will only get unfriendly, mushy answers.

Quaint Berlin pub with typical Berlin cuisine

Urige, gemütliche Gaststätte an historischem Ort mit langer Tradition und sehr guter, deutscher Hausmannskost. Ohne Reservierung schwer, einen Tisch zu bekommen, manche Tische etwas eng vom Platz, aber das Erlebnis macht es wett. Man wird mit Berliner Schnauze empfangen und freundlich bedient. Angebot von Kleinigkeiten wie Wiener Würstchen mit Senf , Wurstsalat und Brot mit Leberwurst (sehr zu empfehlen !!) über Hauptgerichte wie kohlrouladen, Rindsroulade oder Wienerschnitzel bis zur kleinen Dessertauswahl alles lecker und reichhaltig. Preislich völlig ok.

From the outside you can hardly tell how nice it is inside. This is how I imagine a good pub to be. We came for a drink after the kitchen closed. Very friendly service. Pleasant atmosphere. The audience was very diverse and we just felt comfortable and welcome. We'll definitely come back for dinner.

The staff doesn't speak English well but they saved our evening: at 9pm on 8/12 it was packed and they still found a place for us. Exquisite soups, good main courses (with side dishes) and interesting beers. To return.

Unique, classic Berlin pub, which was also visited by countless prominent guests, as evidenced by the pictures on the walls. The food is the best Berlin fare! Always very well attended! We'll definitely be back!
