Last Wednesday, my parents, my five-week-old son, and I dined at the restaurant "Der vierte König" for the first time. We'd been talking about visiting for years, and now we finally made it, and I have to say: it's a shame we waited so long! The atmosphere is warm, the restaurant is lively, and even though it was quite busy in the evening, the staff were incredibly understanding and accommodating (I arrived late because of the parking situation; the baby wanted a snack between courses, etc.). They even offered to warm up something for the baby if needed, which I found very thoughtful, as I was starting to feel a bit guilty about disrupting the flow with my constant delays. The service was also outstanding and exceptionally friendly. The food was simply fantastic in every course; we were more than impressed by the sophistication of each dish, both in terms of the individual components and the overall composition! We found the combination of French cuisine with Indian elements (and vice versa) to be exceptionally successful, and we were very impressed by the new flavor combinations, all of which were presented with fantastic skill. We will definitely be back and thank the entire team!

I used to enjoy going to "Der vierte Könige," but after my last experience, I'm truly disappointed. My voucher had expired—it was purchased during the COVID-19 restrictions—and yet it was rejected without any leniency. The reason given: "The tax advisor removed the voucher from the system." That may be technically correct, but I would have expected more customer service from a restaurant with this reputation. A little cooperation certainly wouldn't have been a problem—instead, as a guest, I felt rather rushed. It's a shame; this is how you lose loyal customers.

The food is surprisingly toothless for Indian influences—not really bad, but not particularly impressive either. The service is very friendly, but chaotic and hopelessly overwhelmed. The ambiance is nice, but is starting to look scuffed and neglected.

We visited here for the first time as part of the Fine Dine Box and were very impressed. The kitchen's creations were sometimes bold, but surprisingly harmonious. The wine and Crémant were excellent. The service topped it all off: The gentleman kept an eye on every table and wonderfully adapted to each one individually. Only the furniture seemed a bit dated to us, but that might just be a matter of personal taste. But this tiny detraction in no way detracted from the overall experience. Thank you so much for that!

Very, very good. It was our first and certainly not the last time we visited the Vierter König. A lovely, relaxed atmosphere in a very nice dining room. Attentive and always friendly service, and a great meal with a few surprises on the plate. It's actually a bit of a chore to single out one dish from the deliciously delicious and varied menu. However, since I'm always weak when it comes to anything sweet, the sweet dessert and the chocolates with my espresso were my highlights of the evening. Thanks to the whole team, and see you soon...

Today was our first time dining at König, the fourth restaurant in Cologne, for "fine dining." We were thrilled with the chef and the food. The Indian touch in the dishes was fantastic. Unique and delicious! We enjoy good food, and I've never experienced an Indian element in this type of cuisine before. Unfortunately, I felt the service was completely out of step with the food. We weren't told what exactly was on each course. Even when we reordered a cheese plate, we didn't know which cheese we were eating. That's the small but significant difference compared to other restaurants in the same price range. Unfortunately, the chef and service don't seem to fit together for us. At these prices, the service should be better. Therefore, we probably won't be coming back. Although we found the chef truly fantastic.

This is the best thing you can do on a Wednesday evening in Cologne's Sülz district. And on all other weekdays when this wonderful restaurant is open, you can only kneel down before this culinary art!!! I can only reiterate to everyone who previously wrote a positive review. This is how cooking and eating become art.

We had dinner there last night. Just superb- from the food to the staff. A very relaxed atmosphere- unlike most restaurants of this caliber We will be back… unfortunately we will have to travel nearly 20 000km to have the same experience again. Back to New Zealand in a few days. Have a guess which was the dessert and which was the entree? 😜

We had the perfect dinner at Der Vierte König. We ate three courses, all of which were both delicious and visually appealing. All the ingredients harmonized perfectly, creating the culinary delight we'd hoped for. We chose the perfect accompaniment to our meal from the astonishingly extensive wine list. The staff impressed us with their friendliness, competence, and attentiveness, something you rarely find these days. Here, your every wish is anticipated. The ambiance is cozy, very warm, traditional, yet not lacking a certain modern touch. It's no surprise that we stayed in this restaurant for three and a half hours. I can only give it an unqualified recommendation.

We had a very pleasant evening at the Vierter König. The food was delicious and artfully presented. After the staff learned that I'm lactose intolerant, they offered me numerous alternatives and made sure the dishes didn't contain too much lactose. The dishes, in which Indian spices repeatedly creep in, were fantastically constructed and delicious. There was very courteous service, everyone was very attentive. We also had nice conversations with our table neighbors - an all-round successful evening!

Plus in a beautiful and cozy atmosphere😍👌👏It couldn't get any better. The staff and the waitresses were very friendly, funny and accommodating and you immediately felt at home🥳👍 The service was also super fast and very attentive. The food is simply incredibly tasty at a top price-performance ratio. We had this in the 4 course menu. There was also a greeting from the kitchen and before we finished the meal, one or two treats😋You can still see my enthusiasm even as I write it🤣 Finally, a huge compliment to our service staff! 😃This means that the quality of a restaurant rises and falls. Even the best chef cannot shine without excellent service. In addition to the above-mentioned qualities, they also have a wonderful sense of humor 👍🤣Here people are happy to give generous tips! We were there for the first time and the food was excellent, very unusual and at the same time harmonious and finely balanced. The service was very courteous and friendly, personal without being intrusive. Very nice atmosphere, open wines at very fair prices. The only drawback: when it's warm outside, it gets a bit stuffy inside.

Unfortunately not a royal experience. The food tasted good, but unfortunately the kitchen had massive time problems today. Even if the restaurant was full, a wait of almost an hour for the main course is simply too long. I found it particularly unfortunate that no one explained the waiting time, especially since we had agreed on a 15-minute break for the main course and I could also see from my seat that there was still time for washing up in the kitchen. I found it particularly unfortunate and also a bit unprofessional that no one asked why we skipped dessert after another 20 minutes of waiting and left very abruptly. I'm sure that our dissatisfaction was clearly visible to us, but we decided to ignore it. For the sake of fairness, I would like to mention that only the courses consumed were charged. Very nice restaurant! We each had 4-course menus (once with pet chicken, once with skrei). Delicious. Nicely prepared. Friendly, unobtrusive service and good value for money in a nice atmosphere! What more could you want?! Clear recommendation!

Unfortunately it wasn't quite to our taste, sometimes a bit too much Indian spices. Unfortunately, apart from Indian spices, you couldn't taste anything else in the beetroot soup. The service was already asking what drinks we wanted, and our legs were still hanging in the air! A little stressful at the beginning! And unfortunately you could smell the smell of cooking throughout the restaurant, so we had to let our clothes air out on the terrace afterwards. So unfortunately it wasn't for us.

The second visit to “The Fourth King” also confirmed the first impression from two years ago. Delicious food in a small restaurant with very nice and attentive service. Today I tried the "Thalis menu". 9 dishes selected by the chef in three courses (available on Wednesdays and Thursdays for €51). Great value for money, especially suitable for those who are “undecided” because you can try so many dishes from the menu. Beforehand there is bread with three kinds of dips. Also a greeting from the kitchen and chocolates at the end (no photo taken). The only drawback: the noise level was relatively high. But the restaurant was also fully booked, which is also really positive :)

A great restaurant in Sülz/Klettenberg. Mediterranean modern cuisine with a great ambience. Menu has everything you need. The 4 or 5 course menu fits well. The wine list is very good and, above all, very well priced. Of course, quality has its price here too, but you get a lot for 70 euros per person. Service excellent. Bravo!

We had the 4 course menu, accompanied by open wine, the St. Emilion and the Châteauneuf de Pape! The marinated salmon was exceptional, seasoned extremely differently than I know it! The Iberico cheeks are so tender and everything is very tasty. The service was very courteous and quick, the chef was very shy and friendly! We will definitely come back here, but without a car. I had to park 15 minutes far away! There's a stop at the top of the Luxemburger, so we'll be taking the S-Bahn soon😜

Exciting restaurant with surprising cuisine. We were there on Valentine's Day and had the menu with meat or fish. The highlight was the fantastic dessert. Perfect service with great friendliness and professional attention, well above what could be expected. All four thumbs up, we'll be happy to come back.

Lively bistro in Belle Epoque style. We had a menu with a suitable wine pairing and were completely satisfied. Food very tasty and of high quality, beautifully presented. Plus friendly, fast and courteous service. A little too noisy for a romantic evening for two, but a top recommendation for a good meal at reasonable prices. We'll definitely come back.

Wir waren das erste mal hier und sehr begeistert. Steht man an einem kalten Winterabend vor dem Restaurant, vermittelt das innere bereits den Eindruck eines Restaurants, in das man gerne einkehren möchte. Der Service hat uns freundlich in Empfang genommen, und blieb aufmerksam bis wir den Abend beendet haben. Die a la Carte eine Abfolge von Brot, Gruß aus der Küche, Vitello Tonnato sowie eine Entenbrust mit Rotkohl und Palatschinken. Alles war toll, und wurde dem Anspruch der etwas anderen Interpretation der französischen Küche gerecht. Wir hatten einen tollen Abend, und werden diesen gerne wiederholen.

The chef came visiting to ask about the food. It is very obvious the he enjoyed classical French training, and is deeply immersed in fusing German, Indian, and French cuisines. The food selection is limited. One can go with prechosen menus or combine appetizers with entrées and desserts. At our visit, the selection comprised 4 appetizers, 4 main courses, and 4 dessert choices. The offerings were one red meat, one poultry, one seafood/fish, and one vegetarian dish for each. Our party of 3.5 shared the meat options, and everything was excellent and highly interesting thanks to various dips and sauces, including with very potent flavors. The wine and cocktail selection is excellent and there are even alcoholfree choices that taste good. The staff is very friendly, attentive, and not stiff at all. All in all, one can feel the passion and positive climate between owner and wait staff (who btw are clearly professionally trained). The prices are very acceptable for the quality and uniqueness of the labor-intense food. BTW, dessert is a must. Sorbets and creme brûlée were so unique and wonderfully presented. And not too sweet...

Wenn man benutzten Besteck abräumt, sich am Ohr kratzt und dann beim Brotschneiden ohne Küchentuch das Brot mit schmutzigen Händen anfasst. (Sowohl die verpeilte Hilfkraft als auch der sehr schnippige "Oberkellner") Dann ist das eklig!100gr Rinderfilet fast kalt als Rostbeef daher kommt, dann kann der Käse mit Chomes und übereifem Camembert (50gr) auch nichts mehr kaputt machen. Das war ein sogenannter Doppelbesuch: Das erste und auch das letzte Mal!!

Wir haben das Thali Menü gegessen und waren mit der Qualität und der verfeinerten Zubereitung sehr zufrieden. Vor allem auch das Dessert war ausgezeichnet. Auch das Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis ist gut. Da das Restaurant nicht sehr groß ist, sitzt man ein wenig beengt. Ein Herr im Service war etwas merkwürdig. Sehr freundlich fanden wir es, dass der Koch am Ende des Menüs zu jedem Tisch gegangen ist und jeden Gast nach der Zufriedenheit gefragt hat. Uns hat es sehr gut gefallen und wir können jedem dieses Restaurant empfehlen.

Wir haben Adventsmenü gegessen. Die Kombinationen waren hervorragend und das Baguette war geschmacklich fantastisch. Der Service war sehr freundlich und aufmerksam. Wir werden sicherlich dort nochmal essen gehen. Es war alles wunderbar.

The fourth king has heart and soul, and that alone has become very rare in today's gastronomy. The service is warm and authentic, the selection of drinks and wines is very clever, and the ambience is tasteful. Prices and portion sizes are perfectly fine. But then there is the food. And that is far too curry-heavy and curry-overloaded. Fusion cuisine or not - the tasting has to make sense, and regardless of what we ate, at the end of the evening we all had a very strong curry aftertaste that drowned out everything else. And that's a shame because the ambience and service are so nice. Sometimes less is more and perhaps too much of the flavors is wanted here, according to the motto “a lot helps a lot”. Our feeling is of course subjective, and everyone should find out for themselves, it just doesn't suit our taste. Visit the fourth king and see for yourself, the service and ambience alone are worth trying. Star level, as some people have written here in the reviews, is with the best of intentions and far from it. For guests who don't like or can't tolerate curry spice, I recommend communicating this very clearly when ordering. We would like to thank the service for the warm and great service.

Es war ein wahnsinnig schöner Abend. Schon die Begrüßung… Haben uns direkt willkommen gefühlt. Bereits der Gruß aus der Küche übertraf unsere Erwartungen! Die Bedienung war superfreundlich. Das (vegetarische) Menü eine Geschmacksexplosion. Vor allem der zweite von drei Gängen (Gemüsestrudel mit Waldpilzen, Rotweinschalotten und Sauce Bernaise) - yummie! Und das Desert… Soooo lecker! Dreierlei Crème brûlée (Ingwer-Zwetschge, Kokos-Curry, Eierlikör-Vanille) . Der absolute Wahnsinn. Das Ambiente draußen: einfach schön! Wir kommen auf jeden Fall wieder! Soviel steht fest! PS: Es handelt sich hier um Fusionsküche (französisch-indisch). Da wird natürlich mit Gewürzen gearbeitet. Lasst Euch drauf ein, es ist sowohl ein Erlebnis als auch ein Gaumenschmaus!

Be it the tartare (vegetarian or with beef), the sea bream with nettle polenat and ratatouille with an Indian twist or the tobacco Baileys brûlée/apricot spice bush/curry. More than worth a recommendation. The wines selected. The Portuguese rosé is pleasantly soft, the Pinot Blanc refreshing with an aftertaste of gooseberries, and the Chardonnay is balanced. The service was very friendly and attentive, always with a short, cheerful saying. Chef de cuisine came to all the tables briefly. The price is good for the value for money. Menu is also recommended. If the place is busy, it can get loud, making conversation difficult. Looking forward to another visit.

Es war mal wieder phantastisch. Ich hatte 3 Stunden vorher angerufen und gefragt, ob auch ein veganes Menü möglich sei. Es wurde dann ein wunderbares Menü kredenzt, die Veganerin war begeistert und ist animiert, selbst mal wieder aufwendiger zu kochen. Dazu ein Thalymenü und ein 3-Gang-Menü: drei Teller mit Genuss für Augen und Gaumen.

The “Fourth King” is now an authority in Cologne and one of our favorite restaurants. French/Indian fusion cuisine, harmoniously seasoned dishes without too much chi-chi, plus an excellent wine list with excellent wines from Germany, Austria, Italy and of course France (recommended, among others, the Sauternes for dessert). In addition, a very nice and confident service that takes care of the guests lovingly and professionally. A great restaurant, we always enjoy coming back.

We went to this restaurant on a Thursday evening when they have a special menu of 3 courses, each consisting of a number of small surprise dishes. We really enjoyed this approach as the dishes were imaginative and super tasty! Service was very friendly. It was clearly popular with local people and you do need to book. Nice atmosphere and decor. It was well worth the short tram ride from the centre of town to this pleasant area.

Sind am 30.05."24 dort gewesen, Reservierung ein paar Tage vorher. Ich hatte das Thalia-Menue: je 3 kleine Gerichte auf einem Teller in 3 Gängen, dazu Küchengruß, Zwischensuppentäßchen und Nascherei extra … (also praktisch ein 12-Gänge-Menue). Geschmacklich: es ist klassische französische Küche, "anfusioniert" mit indischen Gewürzen – sehr interessant! Der Service ist unaufdringlich, sehr effizient, freundlich, sowie "locker & gutgelaunt", was Spass macht. Die Weinkarte ist etwas übersichtlich, da wäre noch Luft, Das Essen ist sehr gut, für einen Michelinstern fehlt echt nicht mehr viel. Kleiner Wermutstropfen: Das Ambiente ist schön, allerdings ist es etwas laut / 'hallig'. (Mit ein paar schallschluckenden Stoffbahnen wäre da schnell Abhilfe geschaffen.) Das Preis-Leistungsverhältnis ist top – eigentlich könnten sie das Doppelte verlangen und es wäre immer noch gerechtfertigt! Insgesamt ein kleines, freundliches, interessantes Restaurant, bei dem man gespannt sein darf, ob es in ein, zwei Jahren seinen Michelinstern verdienen wird!

Were there on May 30, 24, reservation a few days in advance. I had the Thalia menu: 3 small dishes on a plate in 3 courses, plus a kitchen greeting, soup cups and extra snacks... (so practically a 12-course menu ). In terms of taste: it's classic French cuisine "fused" with Indian spices - very interesting! The service is unobtrusive, very efficient, friendly, and "laid & good-humoured", which is fun. The wine list is a bit clear, there is still room for it. The food is very good, there really isn't much left to get a Michelin star. Small downside: The ambience is nice, but it is a bit loud/reverberant. (A few sound-absorbing fabric panels would quickly help.) The price-performance ratio is great - you could actually charge twice as much and it would still be justified! Overall, a small, friendly, interesting restaurant that will be interesting to see whether it will earn its Michelin star in a year or two!

Es war wie immer vorzüglich im Vierten König. Das Thalimenü ist jedesmal eine wunderbare überraschende Reise mit einem sehr leckeren Querschnitt der Küche des Vierten Königs. Es wird aber nicht, wie vielleicht zu vermuten, aus den „Resten“ der a la carte Speisekarte produziert, sondern eigens angefertigt. Zeit für Genuss pur.

The best fine dining restaurant in Cologne and the surrounding area. Very comfortable and not too big. The service is unbeatable. Friendly and attentive but not too intrusive. The food is worth at least one Gault Milleu star. Such great, sophisticated compositions and we had the 5 course menu... and the taste experiences were simply indescribable. The price-performance ratio is absolutely unbeatable. The owner is also the chef and a genius. Location so cozy. If you're in Cologne, a visit is a must. Reservation definitely recommended. Looking forward to our next visit to the Fourth King... greetings from Bucharest...

Everything was very good, the food was delicious, we spontaneously got a seat outside. The service was very friendly, a bit rushed. Something unusual: In such a beautiful atmosphere, we would have liked a tablecloth instead of table sets. We'd love to come back!

The menu was very delicious, both the fish and vegetarian options. The service was excellent, you immediately felt comfortable and very welcome. Before the meal you get a greeting from the kitchen and then a small additional dessert with your coffee. The quality justifies the price 100%! Lovely again!

Attentive service and a nice atmosphere are more common. Such fine, interesting and convincing cuisine is extremely rare. We also found it very nice that the boss personally came to the table from the kitchen and explained one or two details. Update: It was another experience! Our friends were also thrilled... Update: ...the spontaneous visit impressed us again: not exactly cheap, but worth every cent...! Update:..simply great!

Der Vierte König ist immer einen Besuch wert. Für das Thali-Menü am Mittwoch und Donnerstag für 51€/p.P. gilt das insbesondere. 3 Vorspeisen, 3 Hauptspeisen und 3erlei Dessert im Tapasformat sind immer lecker und abwechslungsreich. Dazu eine Flasche mittelkräftigen Allrounder “Maron” aus der Pfalz (Chardonnay/WB). Passt! Der männliche Service könnte in seinem Auftreten einen Gang runterschalten😉

Waren zuletzt vor knapp 20 Jahren (unter „Steinmet“) in der nettgemütlichen, aber akustisch problematischen Location, in der die Tische sehr eng angeordnet sind und man beim Service häufig mehrfach nachfragen muss, um Ansagen zu verstehen. Das Thali-Menu mit 9 Gerichten, verteilt auf 3 Gänge, hatte uns neugierig gemacht, ebenso die angeblich indisch-französische Grundidee der Ausrichtung und die früheren, von uns allesamt hoch geschätzten Stationen des Chefs. Mit 51 Euro ist das Thali-Menu, das auch vegetarisch angeboten wird, niedrig bepreist, auch die nicht allzuüppige Weinkarte bietet einiges zu akzeptablen Preisen, insgesamt ein gutes Preis-Leistungsverhältnis, jedoch mit vielen Schwächen im Detail. Dass es in der Küche an state of the art Anrichtetechniken mangelt, kann jede/r und hier an den hier publizierten Tellerfotos erkennen. Gegessen, wenn man sein Auge einfach mal auslädt. Problematisch wird es, wenn die Teller recht klein ausfallen und jeweils 3 Speisen so arrangiert werden, dass z.B. die Saucen ineinander laufen. Würde man bei der Kombi auf Passung im Sinne von Pairing achten, wäre das egal. Da aber offensichtlich bei Vor- und Hauptspeise sehr bunt karnevalistisch kombiniert wird, sagt sogar der Sommelier bei Nachfrage zu einem Wein Pairing ab, dies wäre gar nicht möglich aufgrund der zu diversen Komponenten. Vorspeise z.B. leckere geschmortes Bäckchen mit einer Sauce im Tandoori Style, Fleisch jedoch aufgewärmt, im Kern noch kalt, eine klas.-frz. Fischterrine, etwas latschiger Blattsalat und ein Turm aus Gürkchen - also eigentlich 4 Haupt-Komponenten - die letzten drei eher unspektakulär langweilig, als wären sie hungrig vom Buffet zsm.gesammelt. Bei der Hauptspeise ähnlich, ineinanderlaufende Komponenten, die nicht wirklich zueinander passen, von den leckeren zu wenig, von den unspektakulären zuviel, die Garpunkte beim Gemüse uneinheitlich, hier zu weich, dort zu viel Biss. Beim Dessert ein leckeres Mangoeis, Topfencreme, ein aufgeweichtes Stück Mohnkuchen, keines der drei Komponenten würde ich als singuläres Dessert akzeptieren, eine Passung stellt man nur mit viel Fantasie (über die Süße) her. Auch der Fusionaspekt ist hier ein zu grosses Versprechen. Meist handelt es sich um klassisch gegarte europ. Elemente, aufgepeppt min indisch gewürzten Saucen. Gelungener empfände ich das Menu, wenn Vor- und Hauptspeise tatsächlich auf 6 kleinen Tellern hintereinander kämen und beim Dessert stärker auf das Pairing geachtet werden würde. Den netten Service erlebten wir anfangs als engagiert und präsent mit negativer Kippligkeit zum Ende hin (Tisch wird unter dem Besteck abgeräumt, während man noch isst, Getränkebestellung je später nur nach Aufforderung, allgemeine Aufbruchstimmung des Personals nach 21 Uhr mit intensivem Reinemachen an der Bar und der impliziten Vermittlung eines Rauswurfs). Insgesamt zwar solide, aber auch nicht mehr. Die Thali-Empfehlung hatten wir übrigens vom Gastrokritiker des Kölner Stadtanzeigers aus der Lokalzeitung. Da dieser bereits mehrfach für uns völlig unstimmige Tipps verfasst hatte, darunter seine beinahe sterneheischende Lobeshymne für das eindimensional kochende Phaedra in Köln, werden wir seine positiven Kritiken künftig nicht mehr praktisch umsetzen, ohne diese über andere Wege zu verifizieren. Wir würden es noch ein Mal versuchen, aber dann mit richtigem Menu.
