Very welcoming, great sensory experience, if I return to the region, I will repeat the visit.

I’ve been to this restaurant already three times and I absolutely love it here! Their food is always amazing and the portions are perfect. Absolutely recommend this place if you are in Essen!

We wanted to eat there. Already at reception we encountered completely unmotivated and unfriendly service. We were assigned a table that was very cramped. When asked if there was no other table available, there was no answer. Then we left again. If you don't feel like making sales, then you can leave it alone. There were still enough tables available. There was also no explanation why you couldn't take another table. The fact that another waitress is sitting in front of the entrance and smoking isn't exactly very inviting either. In any case, I don't want to leave my money there. It's a shame, especially these days.

This is a must go location when you are in Essen! Great atmosphere! Service 4 stars because the speed is lacking when taking our order and serving the dishes. Coincidentally, we were in a hurry. Excellent brewery and restaurant, a must visit! In this place you can breathe a very German atmosphere and you can taste delicacies such as Krosse Haxe and Nurnbernwurst, with cooked sauerkraut and potatoes. The German dishes are truly delicious and plentiful too! I recommend taking the Dunkel beer which is very good and distinctive. The "spiritousen" are numerous and affordable, and the desserts are good too. Free parking is possible in the nearby areas outside the center and it will take less than 1 minute's walk (200m) to get to the restaurant. Very German staff and beautiful girls! In keeping with the Ruhr area, a restaurant with a typical Bavarian ambience. Actually a nice atmosphere, but unlike my companions, I wasn't satisfied with the food. I had 1/2 knuckle with sauerkraut and dumplings. The sauerkraut was good, the dumplings were not and the knuckle was a little spicy (slightly burnt) and tough, the dumplings were ready-made from the cheapest supplier.

Rustic atmosphere, good food, decent portions at a reasonable price. Always worth a visit, we will definitely come back!

We reserved a table for 16 people weeks ago. Unfortunately we sat at 2 different tables. The food also came at different times. Since we only meet once a year, this was absolutely annoying for us. The food was good, plentiful and tasty. Ordering drinks didn't work at all. The waitress was very nice, the one who brought the food and cleared the plates was just rude and unfriendly. Kudos to the kitchen, but unfortunately the rest wasn't okay for us

Update: October 9th, 2024: Unfortunately it has decreased significantly. During the last visits, the staff seemed less motivated and one got the impression that they were more of a nuisance. The dish praised below was unfortunately taken off the menu and the remaining menu unfortunately no longer convinces me, as the dishes are often over-seasoned or look like warmed-up frozen food and unfortunately sometimes taste like it too. It's a shame how quickly a restaurant can develop like that. I know better alternatives. I hope things get better soon, because Leo is still great for drinking. Original: Went to the Roaring Lion today and despite the food being original, everything was perfect! The staff was quick, very open, attentive and simply warm and the food, which took around 40 minutes due to the occupancy, was also perfect. FYI: The staff warned that it might take some time. But it came quite quickly and was great. The light Löwenbräu also tasted very good and the cappuccino and apple strudel at the end were no worse. I have nothing to complain about and see you as one of the top addresses in downtown Essen! See you next time!

Had a great night here with some colleagues. Great range of Bavarian dishes, can definitely recommend the cheeae spatzle. Friendly staff and good atmosphere make it easy to recommend.

Unfortunately the quality has decreased - the hamburgers were unfortunately only lukewarm. Taste, well - we were a little disappointed. Unfortunately the fries were too salty. The kitchen used to be much better. We don't actually know the lion like that. We were disappointed. We are happy to pay €2-3 more per dish and get better quality in return. Craziness! For me it's a blast in Essen. We wanted to go out for a really good German meal and decided on "DER LÖWE" and were really impressed. I ordered the whole knuckle and a pint of beer with it. The beer was nice and tasty and had a good sparkling taste. Then the food came. The pork was super juicy on the inside and super crispy on the outside. The dumplings and sauerkraut also tasted good. Our service was also the best. We sat across from the bar and she said that we should all take a measure so that she doesn't have to walk so much from the bar to our table. She also played a few other jokes with us. Was really wonderful. The ambience was a very classic brewery, that's how it should look, you immediately feel very safe. I can only recommend this restaurant. Everyone who was in Essen should also have been to “DER LÖWE”. Great!

A very, very tired imitation of a quaint Bavarian restaurant. I don't like to assume to other guests what they feel or perceive, how and where. But anyone who has ever had dinner in Upper Bavaria will certainly notice the difference to Bavarian cuisine. We had grilled meat and cheese spaetzle... well, at least the staff tried hard. It's just not a system restaurant and it's still the uncomfortable Essen city center (the landlord can't do anything about it). Hence the verdict: Better Baldeneysee than Tegernsee.

I've been there several times to drink and everything was great. Today we went to eat there with the whole family for the first time and were extremely disappointed. The knuckle was completely overcooked, the sauerkraut, red cabbage and mashed potatoes were inedible! Endlessly muddy. Very unfortunate. At this point the kitchen is not recommended. After the criticism, the staff didn't say anything like "OK, I'll pass it on."

We spontaneously went on a short vacation there and decided on “The Lion”. It really is everything you would expect from a brewery. There is traditional food, served by very friendly waitresses who are beautiful to look at in their traditional costumes. Unfortunately, not all dishes are available in smaller portions. And for the cozy aspect, seat cushions were missing. If these had been there, there would have been another drink. But all in all recommended.👍

What I define as a typical German pub, the waitresses in typical dress are truly picturesque. Good cuisine with typical local dishes. Light but good beer.

A nice, beautiful Bavarian restaurant that suited our tastes, which we found by chance while walking and invited us to stop by. Nice and fast staff. Prices for food and drinks were good. The portions were sufficient. We were full. There was plenty of choice on the menu when we ordered the knuckles I pointed out that you have to wait about 30 mi. That's ok, the only thing I missed on the menu was the sausage salad It's a must in a Bavarian restaurant, but everything else is to our satisfaction. Should we be in Essen again, we'll be happy to visit the Löwe Brauhaus again😊

Staff polite and attentive. Food topic: Some of the menu compositions were difficult to understand for a person coming from Franconia (Bavaria). Therefore no orders were placed on our part. The schnitzels we then ordered were well made (airy parade). You can't go wrong with the Viennese style and the pepper schnitzel was good too. There were fries as a side dish. So there was nothing wrong with the visit :)

Red cabbage and sauerkraut are great! A dessert still fit in. Ice cream is always possible. ;) We received great advice, had all our special requests fulfilled and found it so nice that we lasted a really long time. Apart from the red cabbage, the food was really good. The red cabbage was thickened with something and tasted terrible. Like mush. The service was on point and friendly, the atmosphere was rustic and made you feel comfortable. Crowd mixed, you can sit inside and outside. Reservations are strongly recommended, even on a Monday evening.
