Der Buchwald in Frankfurt am Main

We were a group of about a dozen for Christmas dinner at Buchwald. The service was excellent and enjoyable. The food was hearty and traditional, with a distinct apple wine character. Kudos to the kitchen! The ambiance has the typical charm of an apple wine tavern, though it felt a bit cold to my taste. Nevertheless, we'd gladly return.

In my 45 years on this earth, this was my first time in Buchwald; I've usually just walked or driven past it. I found it very cozy, the service very friendly, and the food delicious. I'd love to come back.

I usually don’t write reviews. But I just watching my photos from Frankfurt, and remembered this restaurant that I went to. 1st of all food was 10/10. Snitzel and sauce for it was perfect, you will be full from eating just half of snitzel even. 2nd, their apple wine was so good, and sonething new for me. 3rd, authentic interior. 4th, staff was so friendly with us. I recommend this place💯

I was here with my "schnitzel group" on October 8, 2025, and I have to say, it was a fantastic evening. The food was EXCELLENT and, despite the busyness, it came relatively quickly. Prices were moderate. The service was very friendly and experienced. Definitely recommended. We'll be back.

An old apple wine tavern. Rustic ambiance. You feel very comfortable there. The food is truly excellent, both in terms of quality and portion size. The staff is very friendly and takes excellent care of their guests.

On Sunday, September 7, 2025, six of us ate in the small but lovely garden of the Buchwald restaurant. The service was excellent! Friendly and efficient! You don't get that everywhere! The selection of dishes is typical for an apple wine restaurant in Frankfurt. The taste was above average, but of course, it wasn't Michelin-starred. You wouldn't expect that, either.

A "real" apple wine bar on the edge of Frankfurt's Bornheim district. The building, presumably dating back to the late 1960s, doesn't reflect the quaint ground floor restaurant. The outdoor areas in front and behind the building are limited, but adequate. The food, drinks, and service are very good.

Simple but cozy restaurant, delicious regional cuisine, friendly service

On a Friday evening without a reservation, we were only able to get a seat in the dining room. It's very quaint and traditionally decorated; you can even see past the cobwebs, which add a certain charm. Because the garden restaurant was full and some tables inside were also occupied, we had to wait quite a while for our food. The menu notes that there might be a wait, as the food is freshly cooked. You could hear the schnitzels being pounded. The food was very good; the wait was worth it. The veal schnitzel was still tender with a pink center, the green sauce was well-seasoned and tasted strongly of herbs. The fried potatoes were also freshly prepared. The hand cheese dumplings were well-cooked, the cheese melted in the potato pancake mixture and was very aromatic. We liked that, in addition to the standard Äppler, they also offer a seasonal one. The summer Äppler is flavored with sloe berries; highly recommended. The value for money is good; you can pay with cash or card. Tips are paid in cash.

Very unfriendly. Was alone for a quick bite. Even there was a table outside, they said I had to eat inside, because they reserve it for a potential bigger party. It was 30 C. NOT RECOMMENDED.

The lentil salad and the Frankfurt Cordon Bleu with hand cheese were delicious. Top notch.

It's declined considerably. Food and drinks now cost between 40 and 50 euros, whereas it used to be more like 30 to 40. Portions have gotten smaller, and the quality is now average.

After a year of abstinence, we wanted to come here again. The best decision in a long time. The green sauce had a good consistency and, above all, a reasonable operating temperature. Both the boiled potatoes and the fried potatoes were very good. The fried potatoes were homemade, not ready-made potato slices that are just burned in the pan. No, these fried potatoes were great. The butter from the hand cheese is lukewarm. Good for smearing. Very attentive service and everything at a reasonable price. An all-round successful evening. Two of our group came by public transport. This isn't a problem either. It could be a little more, the bus stops around the corner.

Buchwald has been one of the top apple wine restaurants on "Frankfurt Goes Out" for years, and rightly so. You sit in a typical, rather purist restaurant, without fancy table runners, decorations, etc. There's a seasonal selection of different apple wines, which certainly sets it apart, as well as the simple, classic Ebbelwoi in a ribbed glass or a Bembel (literally "Bembel"). The purist approach continues with the menu. There's no overly elaborate menu, but instead, they focus on what defines a good apple wine restaurant: Hessian/Frankfurt cuisine. However, they also offer something for vegetarians. We, of course, ordered four Bembels and a bottle of water. For starters, we had the classic Handkäs mit Musik (music with bread and butter), and a Tafelspitzsalat (boiled beef salad) with Handkäse (spicy hand cheese). Both were delicious. The Tagelspitzsalat (a kind of beef salad) was very filling. If you're not very hungry, you can easily order it as a main course. For our main course, we had a pork cordon bleu and a Frankfurter schnitzel with Frankfurter grie sauce. Both are highly recommended. Only the cordon bleu could have used a little more cheese. The schnitzels were cooked beautifully, and all the dishes were delicious and tasty. The service, and presumably the owner (Nici) as well, were very friendly and competent. We felt completely at home at Buchwald and would gladly return. Perhaps there will even be time for dessert. See you very soon!

Food is great. Cordon bleu hand cheese delicious and filling. Wild garlic schnitzel too. The boiled beef with horseradish was praised over the clover. The cider from Taurus is very tasty. Ambience rustic as expected. Service nice and humorous. The downer: no children's plate/dish and the Gaddewertschaft's garden is currently hidden.

A simple, rustic cider restaurant, always busy, so reservations are required. Changing daily specials and a blast: even when the shop is packed. A waiter who does everything on his own and doesn't let himself be disturbed.

Simply great from A to Z. Very tasty schnitzel, fried potatoes were also great and the grits sauce was also impressive. Apple cider was okay, not my biggest favorite, but you can wash that down with the excellent medlars.

From the service to the food and drinks, just good. Therefore five stars. It's always fun to stay there.

Quaint inn with delicious food. When we visited it was very crowded and therefore very loud, so it was difficult to have a conversation. The waiter was very friendly, but since he was alone in the dining room, it often took longer.

Quality of the food has declined. Venison goulash consisted of three pieces of meat. Dumplings were undercooked and had a mushy consistency. The mini hand cheese for over €5 was a joke. The service employee was unfriendly. Here you can see that success is not always an incentive

The Buchwald is located a little away from the upper Berger Straße with its party crowd. Small, rustic Äppelwoei inn. A little more now wouldn't be wrong. It wasn't that good when I visited. Food was very disappointing, Handkäss was more of a praline with 1! Slice of bread and some butter, about 5.20 euros, my winter schnitzel was small with some fried potatoes, heavily salted and a side salad, about 20.50 euros. Was ok. Not more. The price is actually rather high. Main courses mostly from 20 euros. However, the store was full at 8 p.m. Lots of young people. Volume up. It really wasn't comfortable. There were several of us eating there, and an hour later we were down Berger Straße and we all ate a currywurst because we were still hungry. Conclusion, left a lot of money there and still not full. Individual 5-fold experience. We always like to stop there, but not anymore. Maybe again in the summer. Continued success. Lg.

Nice service and delicious food and drink. Had the pork mushroom schnitzel with a side salad. Portion of meat very large and good. The side salad is a hit. Great combination and the dressing is super delicious!

I don't actually want to give it away: it's a real insider tip and pretty much always unknown. I have been enjoying the Buchwald for almost 18 years and the lentil salad and boiled beef salad are unique in Frankfurt. In summer, airy and cozy, in winter cozy and cozy in the living room. Under Master Funk's wing, enjoyment is inevitable. Always my pleasure!

My favorite cider bar. Here you don't tend to find tourists, but rather Frankfurters who want to drink a pint, and there are at least two of them to choose from - which, as far as I know, doesn't exist anywhere else. If you don't like cider, you can also drink a good beer. The food is Frankfurt cuisine, but with a twist. I've eaten unusual things here, like liver sausage lasagna (delicious!).

A quaint, original Frankfurt restaurant with delicious food! The beer is wholesome, Äppler even has a selection. The schnitzel with fried potatoes was good, as was the Frankfurt Cordon Bleu, but it wasn't quite exceptionally good. The salad with dressing was really fresh and really, really good. The fried potatoes were a bit small, but highly recommended. We will come back, no question!

I had simple Frankfurt dishes that tasted great. In my opinion, this is what makes a very good kitchen. I particularly noticed the quality of the fried potatoes. The classic cider tasted excellent compared to other cider bars. The apple tiramisu was exceptional. The service was friendly and interested in our well-being.

Classic pub with good Frankfurter Schnitzel and homemade apple wine

Anyone who loves traditional Hessian cuisine is in good hands here. The ambience is typical of an Äppler pub and the cuisine is delicious: varied, fresh and vegetarians will also get their money's worth. An absolute MUST is the seasonal Äppler. It's best to try them all 😋🙂

The food was excellent, the Eppler is the best in the city (from Eppelwoi Pope Stier), the service was very good and the ambience was also right. Nice, not so big restaurant that is a bit out of the way on a street next to Berger Str. Highly Recommended!

I had a hard time with the rating. The food is rather average considering the price-performance ratio. The apple cider is delicious. The atmosphere is classic Frankfurt. I was there twice and not sad. If you want to visit a Frankfurt gaddewirtschaft, this is the right place for you. If you expect something special when eating, don't.

In my opinion it's the best choice if you're looking for a quaint little Ebbelwoik pub with fantastic food. Always nice and attentive service, the best Frankfurt cuisine and a delicious tipple. Always a pleasure to be a guest!

Schneegestöber, Handkäs und Tafelspitzsalat hatten wir als Vorspeise und Schnitzel, Cordon Bleu und Ei+Kartoffeln+Grüne Soße als Hauptgericht . Alles war sehr lecker....Zur Nachspeise gab es dann eine Art Apfel-Tiramisu. Kurz: Wir hatten nen tollen Abend. Alles hat gestimmt, wir kommen sicher wieder....

Essen ist nicht besonders, eher unterdurchschnittlich. Gibt es in der Nähe deutlich bessere deutsche Lokale. Momentane Bedienungen und Besitzer meist ganz nett aber leider sehr unfähig. Beispielsweise 3 Tische an der Straße, 2 leer. Nach 10 min immernoch keine Bedingung gekommen. Kurz darauf kam der Besitzer raus und raucht eine, sieht dass wir nichts haben. Nachdem er fertig geraucht hat, ging er wieder rein. Sehr respektlos wie ich finde. 2 Sterne auch nur weil abends die Sonne dort noch ganz schön steht.

Gute, rustikale Gaststätte mit freundlicher Bedienung. Die Speisekarte ist sehr klein - aber es gibt eine saisonale Sonderkarte - das Essen ist einfach, aber wirklich gut.
