Burger Patrol in Gelsenkirchen

As a spontaneous walk-in customer after visiting the zoo, we were "allowed" to try out the Star Chief Diner again after years. This store has long since left its heyday behind. An unfortunately run-down diner that has forgotten that it actually has a motto. The operation could improve significantly in terms of service and family friendliness. The shame, however, is the food. The burger patties are, at best, of poor quality and contain pieces of bone, cartilage or some other indefinable hard ingredients. No spice. Lettuce mushy and brownish in places. A salad cocktail sauce made it onto the burger as a burger sauce. The fries were cold and mushy. For this “feast” in the form of two, admittedly large, burgers with three fries and three drinks, we were allowed to pay a comparatively high sum of over €60. Never again.

Food and service were good. We were there on a Friday early evening, it wasn't that busy. Waiting time for food was okay. Unfortunately, the dinner is a bit dirty in one place or another (flowers on the windowsill full of dust and cobwebs / a cover strip on a bench was missing, there was only dirt in it / a menu wasn't wiped clean properly). We actually liked the ambience, but the little things mentioned depress the rating. It was only enough for the four stars because the milkshakes are really good and recommended.

I can't understand the negative reviews. There were four of us there, two of whom were children. We had reserved in advance (5 p.m.) and were allowed to choose our table, which was only 1 table, like right next to it, further in the corner of the play area. This was tidy and everything was clean, including under the tables and since it took us longer to choose our favorite table, we inspected many tables and there was nothing dirty, broken or worn. In my opinion, these are baseless claims from critics who are desperate to badmouth this great store. Well, we were in the main room and didn't look in the next room when you go through the "Stargate". So I can only judge this room, as well as the toilets, which were also clean and even here attention was paid to details in the decoration to create the turquoise diner flair. We were extremely satisfied. We started with the delicious shakes, everyone had a different one and they were all sensationally delicious! We had burgers, spare ribs, the tender meat fell off the bone, they weren't too greasy and had a good, sweet and smoky marinade, chicken wings, onion rings and curly fries and aiolidip, everything was warm, tasty, crispy and nicely presented. Nothing to complain about, just praise! Our drinks were always brought to us quickly and completely, and we didn't have to wait long for the food, which was really varied. I found the ambience very nice, the icing on the cake would have been the service on roller skates and if female in a pettycoat dress, but that doesn't have to be the case and if I worked there I would be grateful not to have to rush around like that. The only thing I found was that the music was very appropriate for the diner and the 50s era, but it was a tad too loud when we were there, but that's just a very small comment. There are parking spaces right in front of the door, you could also sit outside and there is a small sand play box and a surf bar, which was of course closed when we visited in April and you can also see certain rustic vehicles. By the way, we traveled an extra 110 km for this diner to experience something special and we weren't disappointed! There are also alternatives for allergy sufferers (gluten-free and lactose-free for burger rolls and shakes), vegans and vegetarians, you just need to let us know. Incidentally, the service employee was always nice and didn't show any signs of stress, even if I saw him mainly working alone. Everything is simply excellent!

Delicious food, nice & friendly staff - gladly again

I've never experienced such a bad store in my life. The waiting time was almost 2 hours until the food came - and we even had to wait 40 minutes for the drinks. And that at 28 degrees outside temperature and a half-empty store! When the food finally came, the disappointment was huge: the burger bun was tasteless, and any beginner could have done a better job with the pulled pork. Service, food and location – everything is absolutely underground. So underground that it almost qualifies as a tourist attraction again. The only bright spot was the friendly parking attendant - thanks for that, but unfortunately that's not enough to justify more than one star.

After a family day we spontaneously went there. We received a very friendly welcome and the service was really great. The food is more than delicious, it pampers your body and soul. The price-performance ratio is great. The service is super friendly and helpful. Unfortunately you can only give 5 stars. Unfortunately we forgot to take photos.

Delicious food and a good portion. Good place to satisfy your burger cravings with the right ambience. For anyone with celiac disease, there are gluten-free burger buns. I find the furnishings very nice, reminiscent of the 70s. Burger was very tasty, meat is nice and spicy but the portion of fries with it is a joke. For around 10 fries you pay around 5 euros more. What really bothered me is that dogs are allowed in the store. Not every dog ​​is trained, there are also dogs that think they get something from the table. I also missed women who serve food with roller skates :)

Great, we received a very friendly welcome. The boss personally brought us to the table. Kids were very welcome. Staff is super nice and very pleasant. Food was super tasty.

Unfortunately, it's not nearly as great as it used to be. Compared to the rest of the menu, it's become significantly more expensive, even though the quality and quantity of the food has declined significantly. The service leaves plates and dishes sitting for ages. Cups and glasses remain empty, and we're not even asked if we'd like anything else. We ordered shakes at the end, 3 out of 6 of which were incorrect because the staff apparently didn't understand the menu very well. The benches are full of holes and have been carelessly repaired. We definitely won't be coming back.

Yesterday we had dinner there again after years, I have rarely seen such a dirty, rocky American diner! We had to wait over an hour for our food even though the restaurant was empty. The children's corner is the purest, dirtiest disaster! The food was cold, the fries were soggy, every takeaway around the corner would have done better, that's no joke! The bacon didn't even see the pan and the baked beans on the burger were slapped on cold. My child even refused to eat after one bite of french nuggets. Only one waitress understood us, the rest hardly spoke any German. The furniture is broken and dirty. What just happened there?????? I remember a great restaurant with delicious food and nice girls who served the food in petticoats, it was always a full hut and the food was delicious back then!!!! We will definitely never come back! Too bad!

We had dinner there yesterday. Right from the start we were told that card payments didn't work and only cash payments were possible. Up to this point you could say: “Well, what’s the big deal?” Then we ordered, but one order was forgotten, so we had to wait longer - but okay, it can happen. There were problems with the receipt when paying. I said it wasn't a problem, I could just take a photo of the tablet with the order so we could split the cost between us. And that's exactly when I realized that we had paid €11.20 too much. When I complained, I was told that a hamburger (worth €11.20) had been ordered “subsequently” - which is definitely not true. I got my money back, but I'm sure that was done intentionally to take our money. How am I so sure? While I was taking the photo, the waiter scrolled down so I couldn't see the order above (the supposedly "reordered" hamburger). Unbelievable! Be careful where you spend your money! My family and I will never set foot in this store again. (The problem arose with the waiter who was covered in tattoos and tried to rip us off.)

We had wrap, steak fries, ladyburger and kiddy burger. Everything was great and a cool place.

The first time it was said that card payment only works sometimes. A few days later we went there... around 7 p.m. and they said we would close at 8:30 p.m. today. Then why the reservation? I used to enjoy going there, but now it's gone a lot... Pity

We were very happy there. The boss even took the time to say a few personal words to us at the table. Where else can you find something like that? The ambience was absolutely great and the look of the store was a real joy. A clear recommendation for USA fans. We and the children were also very welcome, there is even a children's corner and, when the weather is good, a sandpit outside. The food was very, very tasty and although we were told that it would take an hour to eat, our food came after half an hour, so we were pleasantly surprised. Parking is free. Overall, the store was very clean and the staff was friendly and helpful. Gladly again

Waiters are super nice but the food wasn't warm, burger meat tastes like ready-made patties from netto and rolls are the same. I can recommend milk shakes, good if you're more there to feel like you're in an American diner.

Food was okay, quality like in the cheap snack bar, but the food was very "expensive". The offer was pretty cool but was getting old. The waitress rolled her eyes several times. Pure Eastern Bloc employees. Everything was ok but we wouldn't come back again.

Falafel burger for 13€ and wasn't even fast food quality! Plastic plate, without decoration, with a burger bun in the middle, a dry lid lying like a mushroom cap on the far too small patty. Dry, loveless and far too expensive! If we had preferred to go to a kebab shop, it would have only cost €6 and tasted much better! Different conditions were addressed twice, but no one was interested.

The restaurant is pleasant. The food tastes very good and the service is very nice. Unfortunately inventory is dwindling. You could invest in new seating and decoration. Toilets are clean. But could also be renovated. But we would like to come back.

We've eaten here a few times, which shows that we like the food (burgers, pizza). What we unfortunately notice negatively is that it feels like nothing is being put into the store (defective benches, lamps and the children's corner used to be more loving). Were here for the first time today and it's worth it! After initial difficulties with seating, there was a lot of enthusiasm ☺️ the very friendly waiter organized a seat and was super friendly from start to finish, as were all the other employees. And last but not least, the food came to the table quickly and was very, very tasty. Great milkshakes and desserts are on top 🤤 so if you can and want to get it, it's worth it 😉

Unfortunately, the restaurant's quality continues to decline, service was more than overwhelmed, suddenly card payment was no longer possible, many drinks were no longer available, no current menu. You had to alert the service several times that you were still waiting for drinks or shakes. In my opinion, Fifty's flair is hardly alive anymore, just the ambience. I've been coming to StarChiefDiner for a very long time, and every now and then I notice that it's decreasing. The food and price are still amazing, especially the spareribs, are simply amazing, but even then the presentation was better back then than it is today.

Hello, I have decided to share my experience. Today 02.02.2025 I was with my family at noon to eat at Star Chief Diner Restaurant. To our surprise, the interior is very good and very comfortable. My son ordered a dish with an Italian name...my wife ordered Charly's Chicken and finally you ordered a pizza which you had to build yourself. This is where I want to explain better. Everything was very good, the waiter was very friendly, a young boy. My son's dish was moderately good, my wife's was more like chicken salad and finally my pizza. I shared a piece of pizza with each of my family. We have all eaten pizza and we know that from time to time the cheese and salmon slide off the pizza and you can see the tomato sauce underneath and to my great surprise I also saw the slices of salami. Normally the freshly cut salami and Once baked, the pizza remains red. I have seen more than three slices of blue-green Colos salami. I immediately called the waiter to ask him about the strange color of the salami. He told me, don't worry, I'll go ask my colleague. It didn't take long for him to come back and he told me to ask the cook and she told him that everything is in order. He looked at me with a look of not understanding anything. I asked him about the green color of the salami. He replied that he didn't know why the green... I didn't eat my pizza 🍕 I paid my bill and we went home. Thinking about how the case could be solved if I write my experience or not. There you have it I will never eat at this place again.

So that was it! It was just the last visit with you! I've never experienced anything like that. I used to be a regular customer, but became more and more disappointed... Service has deteriorated dramatically, it's extremely cold in winter and the quality of your products has also deteriorated... I'm just incredibly disappointed... You arrive at your place on a Saturday evening full of anticipation and then no EC payment is possible, the coffee machine is broken, various dishes are out, there are no Krefeld... Honestly?! What's wrong with you?! It seems so completely listless... I used to love staying with you, it was like a second home for me, but now?! Zero recommended! Better go to the competition! Goodbye forever! Unless it changes 360° again! We're lucky the door was open and the light was working.

Yesterday we reserved a table for 4 people at 6:30 p.m. The restaurant was already suspiciously empty when we arrived. Unfortunately, the staff wasn't very friendly when they came in and gave the impression that they didn't want to have guests. We as customers had to take notice. According to the notice on the door, payment by card is possible. To our astonishment (and those who were about to pay) the table behind us refused. When we asked at the counter, we were told that card payment was not possible. A reason for us to go. It's a shame, the diner looks great. The staff should have informed them when assigning tables that evening that card payments were not possible.

The food was tasty and came relatively quickly. The Star Chief Diner advertised a children's corner. This was also nicely decorated. The stay was also good until we had to change our son's diaper in the toilet. The changing mat was cracked at the bottom and covered in numerous stains. The disabled toilet, where the changing flap was also located, had not even been cleaned (remaining traces of feces in the toilet). The flap was also really dirty and a toilet roll was just lying in there. There were still hairs in the corners of the changing flap and also indefinable secretions that caused the food to come up again. If you offer a children's corner, then please also have a reasonable changing area where I don't run the risk of the child getting sick or you catching something yourself!

I've been here several times but never left a review. The charming 1950s ambience is the highlight for me, apart from the food. We took advantage of an offer where you could get the standard fries with dip at no extra charge with the burger. The burgers and fries are very tasty, even if the food wasn't quite hot when it was brought to the table. Unfortunately, oldies are no longer played, which is only a very small criticism of an otherwise successful evening in the restaurant.

It took 25 minutes for a waiter to serve us. Unfortunately, he came across as very annoyed, so we considered leaving the restaurant beforehand. After about 10 minutes our drinks arrived. The drinks tasted very stale. The “Fanta” and the “Sprite” tasted totally watery. Unfortunately our food was totally cold. All burgers were not warm so the food was not tasty. We were also completely ignored. Nobody came and asked for drinks or anything. It's sad what this great shop has become.

The food tasted good. The service was friendly and as it should be.

The burger bun that was declared "gluten-free" was actually the whole wheat bun, which is not gluten-free. There wasn't even an apology. Now the gluten-free option has been taken off the menu... I'm glad I didn't have to go to the doctor because of my celiac disease. Never again!

Was everything better before? Today was the first time in a long time at Star Chief. The place is very empty and that in the run-up to Christmas. Very nice employee. Burger was quite good. The baked potato was not fresh and had apparently been warmed up in the microwave. Wasn't in the oven for a second. And that for 7.90 euros. Complained and it was easily removed from the bill. Thank you very much for that. Ambience could do with an upgrade. Apparently new owner. As I said: earlier was better

We actually always enjoyed being there. Yesterday for my birthday (with announcement). Unfortunately it has slowed down a lot. The facility is now getting old. The service, I guess, was anything but accommodating. I know it differently too. It was very cold in the room. The skylight didn't work. The burger was good but everything was carelessly slapped onto the plate. The cutlery only came after the food was served. Only the milkshakes with marshmallows were beautifully served by a girl. I can't even talk about "service" here if there was none at all. The table we reserved was still completely full and dirty from previous customers. This wasn't even put away. Waiting time over an hour despite the quiet location. Luckily, judging by the rest of the reviews, we got up and left.

We ate there yesterday after the Halloween event on Zoom and were completely satisfied in the diner. The welcome was nice, the service was very, very nice, I have to mention the short conversation was great and I hope the little gift arrived 😉 otherwise the atmosphere was nice and the food was nice delicious. We would love to come back again.

The food and shakes are delicious and the prices are fair (offer days even unbeatable). The only thing we complain about was the service. The young man didn't feel like it and you could tell that, the order came in dribs and drabs, even the drinks. But the food made up for it.

We were there on a Sunday around 5:30 p.m. In terms of price, we swallowed a bit at first, the cheapest burger costs 9.70, most between 11 and 12 euros. The waiter pointed out to us right before we ordered if we wanted some food that the meal would take about half an hour, the place was a little less than 2/3 full. Our burgers (hot cheese burger in size L for €12.10 and the portion of steak fries for €3.30) arrived after less than 15 minutes. The burger was super tasty, had great toppings, the meat was really good and the burger was actually really hot and spicy. My husband and I were PAPPESAAT afterwards, the fries didn't have to be there. This puts the price of the burger into perspective if you are really full afterwards and it tasted delicious (I think). The service was friendly, only the drink order took a while to arrive (beer). The atmosphere is nice, the music is at a pleasant volume. The women's restroom was clean. We were satisfied with the visit. If we lived nearby, we would eat there more often and try out the different burgers.

The store is of course very nice to look at in American style. The waiter also does a really good job, really nice guy. However, the burger we ordered was very bad. It was served almost cold and was therefore almost inedible. You have to know.

We were allowed to park in the backyard because we had just visited the zoo. Unfriendly service. 1 hour before closing time I was already found to be pretty unwelcome here. Cold burger patty, probably reheated...not particularly desirable. This was actually my "B" sample, which is why I gave it 3 stars. I was here about 6 months ago and back then I was impressed by the friendly service and the quality of the burger. One star for the service because it was really great, one star for the opening, it was really cool. Cleanliness couldn't be faulted, it also gets a star. Two stars deducted because the food was simply lacking. But when I asked if I could get fries without salt for our toddler, our wish was granted. Super. The food (at least what we ordered) wasn't overly edible but unfortunately not something that would make us say "Boar, I definitely have to go there again". But your ribs looked good 👍🏼

The spare ribs are very tasty. Very delicate. Something like Kasseler. The service is nice and motivated. Maybe a little understaffed after Corona. But everything is good. You feel in good hands here and well catered for. The seats invite you to stay longer.

Long wait for the food, which wasn't really convincing either

Celebrated my father's birthday here, it was a wonderful evening. The service is super competent and friendly and the food is great. Completely convinced and definitely worth a visit.

Starchief Diner is a visually stunning place and definitely a great spot for photos. The retro decor gives off that classic diner vibe you often see in movies or TV shows, which makes for a fun atmosphere. However, when it comes to the food, it’s good but not quite up to the high prices they charge. It’s more of a stylized version of American diner food, not exactly the real deal you'd expect from a traditional diner. While the quality isn't bad, it doesn’t justify the cost. Another thing worth mentioning is that the diner seems understaffed. Although the staff was friendly, there were noticeable delays in service, likely due to being short-handed. Overall, Starchief Diner is a nice experience for the aesthetic, but the food and pricing could see some improvements.

The best American diner far and wide. A really nice restaurant with plenty of parking. The decoration and furnishings are really nice and fit perfectly for a diner of this type. The service is good. Unfortunately, the staff can sometimes be a bit overwhelmed when it gets busier. But the most important thing is the food and it is simply super tasty. In my opinion the best and tastiest burgers in all of Gelsenkirchen. In addition, the price-performance ratio is also good. It's not cheap, but the portions are really big.

We were there for my sister's birthday after a Zoom visit. The waiter was super nice and accommodating, even defended the boss by saying that many guests had come without reservations, so there was only one waiter on site. Scold the boss: This waiter was solely responsible for the service, he also had to pour the drinks. Unfortunately my Charly's Chicken was cold. I didn't revise it because I felt sorry for the waiter and it actually tasted good because it was served on a cold salad. Everyone else was happy with the food. Many thanks again to the dedicated waiter. Oh, I forgot, the ambience inside is great, outside you actually need to work on it. Since there were 6 of us, we wanted to put two tables together, but we weren't allowed to do that. Instead, we had to sit on the rather uncomfortable, wooden, unkempt seating sets.

The food was quite good. A burger that you can eat in peace. The products used are Tk and not really fancy. A cucumber on the bruger is unusual. The meat was quite firm and a bit dry. Unfortunately the service wasn't that great. Empty glasses were overlooked and you had to wait a long time. The cutlery for the burger didn't arrive until 5 minutes later and unfortunately the burger was then cold. We sat outside on the wooden benches, unfortunately without cushions, which were a bit uncomfortable.

I have never eaten such bad or tough spare ribs. You could hardly remove the bones from the rack with your hand, they were so solid and tough. It's no wonder that the silver skin wasn't even removed from the kitchen before it was cooked. The only plus point: the meat tasted quite nice and smoky.

The waiter didn't want to take my technical order, so when I got there I had to wait a long time for the order. That's better.

Food very good Waited a long time for food Understaffed

We were there again after 2.5 years. I'll get to the reasons later. Very empty when we arrived, we could choose our place. When we placed our order, we said that we hadn't been there for a long time, and the reason we gave was that on the last few visits, i.e. plural, my wife was always served hamburgers that could only be described as lukewarm. Well, order placed, drinks arrive in stages, first for my wife then for me. As I said, the store was empty. Then the food came. Burger and Twister lukewarm only the plate was hot. If you as a guest have pointed this out beforehand, I'll let the kitchen know that there were complaints about cold food. Either you didn't listen or you don't care if the guests are happy. The service used to come by every now and then to ask if everything was OK or if you needed something to drink, nothing. Conclusion: I wouldn't recommend it.

American Diner. In style. Great ambience. The food is delicious and rich. You'll get full here. Prices are absolutely reasonable. Always happy.

The store used to be great. There was a completely different atmosphere here, you almost felt like you were on vacation. Unfortunately, the staff is no longer on point and the food is no longer as good as it was before Corona. Unfortunately you really have to wait a long time until you are served. sometimes others get the food before you, even though they arrived long after you. Payment also takes a long time. We went here at least once a month for a milkshake (annual pass in Zoom). The shake used to be lactose-free. Since our children are lactose intolerant, we have often been drinking shakes here. Last year there was only lactose-free milk and the ice cream was out. Now only shakes containing lactose are on the menu, with the note that lactose-free milk is also available. What's the point of this? Only someone who doesn't have a problem with lactose will probably understand the meaning behind it. Parking spaces are available directly in front of the door and are free of charge. There is indoor and outdoor seating and the ambiance is really nice. Maybe you'll introduce lactose-free shakes again at some point, then we'll be happy to come back.

There used to be more tinsel, a well-known face on television once said, but unfortunately it also applies here. The staff has to evaluate their own workplace themselves, as the language of the guests clearly points in a different direction. Admittedly, no restaurateur can be responsible for the decline of German gastronomy due to the panic ordered by Messrs. Spahn and Wieler, but unfortunately, after paying customers were no longer checked in like village mutts at the gate, they failed to bring the infrastructure back up to speed. to convert to guest-actual-on-site operation. The staff was running on the edge, as they now had to serve “live guests” in addition to what felt like thousands upon thousands of delivery orders. Little remained of the splendor of the old days, especially as the service continued to thin out and the kitchen was clearly trying to deliver despite everything. The fact is: I can't blame the kitchen staff, at some point a person is simply at their limit between the dining room and the delivery area, but the quality of the food was still at a good level. But that's exactly where it stopped again. There was no longer any trace of the “old guard” in the service, food was brought and that was all. Reordering drinks required patience and several times of waving and hoping. Despite all of this and the fact that we have enjoyed being with you for a long time, I would have liked to have given you a chance to rethink my image, but I would be committing a criminal offense if I did so, as it is common practice to bring former employees and their relatives with them to be punished by banning people from entering the house.

Mostly overcrowded (especially when it closes diagonally across the street) but pizza & burgers are good!!!!

The ambience and presentation are great. A special experience, especially for American fans. The food was good and tasty. We had burgers, fries, sweet potato fries and brownie. It's all ok. The service was friendly but not on point. It wasn't cleared away until we left. Sometimes it felt like I waited a little longer...but everything was ok. It wasn't that crowded, but it was well attended.

Guys, go somewhere else! Even if you have the voucher from Parken. Bad service, all burgers cold. Only one out of three portions of fries was warm. Milkshakes also below average. Really, don't do this to yourself.

Service - catastrophic. After 15 minutes someone came to order. Not a word was understood and it took 20 minutes for our warm milkshakes to arrive. The meal, 3 burgers with fries, was quite cold and tasted rancid like the restaurant smells from the inside. Not recommended and very expensive!! I would prefer to give 0 stars.

Have been here again for years. The store used to be really great. Unfortunately, our visit this time was not at all like it used to be. To name just 2 negative points so that the review won't be too long, I'll go into the burgers in general. Unfortunately, they don't taste the same anymore. The meat patties are of absolute chemical industry quality with many flavor additives. You can see this both visually and from the artificial taste. Furthermore, it is really very unpleasant when the staff loudly shout things to each other in Turkish throughout the outside area and also inside. The fact is we won't come here again. We will switch to other diners in Essen and Dortmund in the future.

Cool concept, great facility. Unfortunately, there are too few staff, the waiter is listless and you can hear internal friction as a customer. The staff seems annoyed and overwhelmed. You wait a long time for your food, even though the shop is quite empty. You are also not asked whether you would like to drink something else and empty glasses are not cleared away. Overall, the service concept is missing. Too bad! The store could do so much more with the right staff.

Great idea, very nice atmosphere. Absolutely overwhelmed staff. Understaffed and unfortunately no entrepreneurial spirit. During a 1.5 hour stay I wasn't even asked if I wanted something more to drink. Unfortunately, a lot needs to happen here in terms of management and staff.

I've been there twice now with a friend and ordered there twice. For me the best American so far. The service is friendly, the food is delicious and it arrives hot when delivered. Always happy to go there. :)
