Brauhaus Zum Alten Dessauer in Dessau-Roßlau

Even without a reservation, we had a very good meal here, and a table was found for us. Every guest who arrives without a reservation is given the opportunity to stay. I saw guests being asked to sit at the bar and order a drink, and then, when the next table became available, they were invited to take a seat there. I think that's excellent, especially since there was only one employee working in the restaurant. A wonderful example of how German restaurants can function. Thank you so much for the delicious food and the lovely stay.

Simply fantastic. We got a table for four without a reservation in a cozy part of the restaurant. Upstairs. The decor was charming and rustic. The food arrived without a long wait, and everything was fresh and delicious. The service was very friendly. Absolutely nothing to complain about.

We ate there on two evenings. The food was excellent each time, and the beer was also flawless. However, the service was unacceptable!

The pulled pork burger with sweet potato fries was amazing. The service was great. Paying by card (including tip) was no problem. I'd gladly come back again! 😁

What can I say, the online reservation was completely uncomplicated, the food was great, the drinks were great, the service was great, the ambience was rustic and inviting, in summary, I would definitely go back, the sauerbraten was a poem.

Very good German cuisine, I recommend the knuckle of pork, simply top-notch. What I find very, very sad, though, is that they no longer serve potato soup; it was absolutely amazing. Please, please make the potato soup again. A brewery deserves potato soup 😊

My meal was very good. The other guests disagreed. The fried potatoes probably didn't taste fresh. Due to a lack of staff, the menu was limited. We were told this sternly when we asked after we had ordered drinks. If I'd known, we would have gone another day, when there would have been more choice. I thought there would be more on a Sunday, when there are lots of tourists. The waiter seemed a bit unfriendly at first and hardly smiled. It seemed like a generally bad mood there. So I'm not surprised by the lack of staff. Towards the end, he became a bit friendlier when I pointed it out to him - which is why the rating is mediocre.

The waitress was rude and didn't answer our questions at all. She handed us a menu and told us which three beers they had. When asked for another beer listed on the menu, she said, "I just told you what beers they had!!!" Simply abysmal. We ate only the bare minimum.

The food and service were excellent! We arrived 45 minutes before closing time and had a very good meal. The kids were entertained with art supplies. There's a children's menu (for coloring) and you can order smaller dishes (for those who can't manage a proper meal) 😀 I highly recommend it.

Delicious summer beer and knuckle, what more could you want

Four of us recently visited the brewery. The service was very friendly and prompt. I was a little disappointed with the food (Dessaur Bierfleisch), less by the taste than by the presentation. The look of the dish reminded me of our school lunch 50 years ago, unfortunately, there's certainly room for improvement.

Yesterday, I was at the brewery for the first time in about a year, along with four other people, to celebrate my father's 89th birthday. Unfortunately, my companions' assessment was mostly disappointing. On the positive side, the beer was tasty, and the accompaniment from the kitchen, a fresh spent grain baguette with lard, was delicious, and my pork knuckle was cooked to perfection. The rest of the meal, two beer-style meatballs and two roasted pork chops, were a complete letdown. They lacked any flavor; the roasted pork chops looked as if they had never been grilled, and the fried potatoes tasted reheated. The beer-style meatballs were tough, and the beef portion was small. Food of this quality is, firstly, not worth the advertised price and not a recommendation for the brewery. We don't understand the waiter's comment, after we asked why the food was so tasteless that most guests like it that way. They could add more seasoning. Since most reviews praise the food, we hope yesterday was an exception. We've never been so disappointed with the brewery. One more small note: When making a reservation on the website, they ask if there's a special occasion. For this reason, I was actually expecting a small gift for the "birthday child," but otherwise, you can skip this point.

Very friendly service, and the food was all delicious. We had a pleasant outdoor seating, and when we wanted to escape the wasps, we were quickly moved inside with the help of the staff. We'd be happy to come back.

The 2025 summer beer, which will be served here during the warmer months, is highly recommended. The hop varieties specially integrated into the brewing process put the industrial beers usually enjoyed in public to shame. You should take the opportunity to visit the somewhat hidden brewery restaurant!

Just a shadow of its former self. I recently ordered duck, it was from the supermarket frozen food. The chef didn't notice that it was already pre-salted, so I salted it again. It was simply bad. Hope for improvement.

A lovely restaurant that we visit every time we're in Dessau. Whether inside or outside in the beer garden, both are cozy. The staff is very friendly. Most importantly, of course, the food. Delicious and freshly prepared, attractively presented. The Dessau Zwickel beer is also excellent. I highly recommend it. March 2025: It was again very nice and delicious. July 25: Great service, friendly staff, and top-notch food!

The service was prompt, and the food arrived quickly. However, my meal, for over €20, simply lacked flavor. A piece of fish, rice, and some salad. The salad was delicious. The rest didn't match the price.

TL;DR: Lots of good ideas, but little that's truly convincing. My heart bleeds a little because I actually want to give it a better review, because the potential is there, but it wasn't realized during my visit, so this is a bit longer. Let's start with what's excellent: the homemade bread with beer wort is top-notch. Soft inside, crispy crust, and a wonderful spicy aroma. What's also good is the brewed beer. That's why you go to a brewery, and even though the beer tastes fresh and good, they don't have their own house brand, but rather Zwickelbier. Good beer, tasty beer, but also the kind of beer you can get elsewhere at a similar freshness. The atmosphere is cozy and clean. The service is friendly and courteous, but when you're asked three times within five minutes, it can get a bit pushy. The meat dishes were good, but when a Wiener Schnitzel costs almost as much as a Wiener Schnitzel elsewhere, expectations are naturally set, and unfortunately, they aren't met. The meat is good, the breading is okay, and the side dishes are just okay. Fried potatoes just shouldn't be soggy. Unfortunately, the value for money isn't right. The famous clarified butter unfortunately just had an unpleasant taste of fat, and the Fassbrause (a type of beer) was very bland. When you read on the menu that the evil EU forces you to list allergens and ingredients and that you have to pay extra for takeaway, the lovely ambiance immediately seems less than appealing. Unfortunately, it will probably only be a one-time visit. What a shame.

Very good brewery restaurant with German and international dishes. I thought the sauerbraten was delicious. The beer selection included light, dark, and bock beers.

The service was an absolute disaster. When the waitress said, "Just because you raise your hand for me doesn't mean I'll come to you," we had to wait a long time for our drinks. In some cases, the drinks we ordered weren't brought. It's a shame; it has absolutely nothing to do with competence. The chef did a great job, though. Thank you very much for that. If we ever visit Dessau again, the Brauhaus won't be our first choice.

The parking is almost rocket science. Don't forget to get a chip to exit the parking space. It's best to do this at the latest when paying the bill. Apparently, they forgot. I walk back the first time. The clerk says, "Wait a minute." I go back to the car. Nothing happens. We watch from a distance, being watched. Nothing. I walk back a second time. Hurray, now I get the chip. I would have been too fast the first time! Movies without money!!! The rule is: who wants what from whom here? When you still have 300 km to go, it's just incredibly annoying.

Was there for Christmas...it was solid.

There are self-service tables outside where you can order and pay using a QR code. Cool idea, we'll give it a try! While we were ordering, a waitress from far away shouted in an unfriendly tone that these tables wouldn't be served. We weren't expecting to be served because it was self-service, but to immediately tell us to leave is outrageous. You're happy about digital progress, but you realize that even the staff doesn't want it. It's a shame.

The beer garden is a great place to sample the delicious home-brewed beers under the trees. There's something for everyone on the menu. The food is good and plentiful. The service staff is always friendly and very attentive. All in all, we can wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant.

Extremely lazy and unfriendly service. The first thing they tell you when you walk in is that they're incredibly busy and that if you want to sit outside, you have to carry your order out yourself. We left immediately :-(

The restaurant was quite full, but there were also plenty of tables, so we got a table right away without ordering. But that was the only positive thing. The four of us waited 1.5 hours for our food. The house light beer was good, but the shandy was absolutely disgusting. The meals start at €19 and up, but they're absolutely not worth it. Neither in terms of quantity nor in terms of taste.

Despite the very interesting ambiance and the friendly and fast service, there really should be some negative points for the food. The potatoes were old and glazed – a disaster. The Königsberger Klopse tasted bland and sweet!!!! Instead of tasting of capers, the sauce was ditto...

Unfortunately, Dessau's best beer restaurant no longer serves in its beer garden. This is, of course, very unfortunate when the weather is nice.

It used to be better. We were there with 7 people. The service was very good and nice. The food was average. In my opinion the dumplings were not homemade. The waiting time is long despite normal occupancy. Waited 15 minutes for three portions of dessert (ice cream and creme brulee). The online map is not up to date. The on-site menu includes less. We won't be coming back any time soon.

The beer here is very drinkable and good - the unfiltered pale ale was extremely tasty. We took two swing-top bottles with us to take home! But the food was also very good. The butter-tender roast pork with dumplings and sauerkraut is highly recommended. It's very cozy in the brewery and the service is friendly, so we'll definitely be back.

We were there at the beginning of February and it was great. We hadn't yet sat at our table when we were already brought water for our dog. I love gestures like that. And the greatest thing was, when we got our food, our dog got a bowl full of dog food. So we could eat in peace. We were completely overwhelmed by so much friendliness. The service is top and the price-performance ratio is perfectly fine. The food was super tasty. If you are in Dessau, you have to eat at the brewery. It's always a pleasure.

A wonderful place full of hospitality and a very motivated team. Compliments to the busy service staff who always keep an eye on us guests 😃. My “drebber bread schnitzel” was delicious. The alcohol-free gusset is highly recommended. In my opinion the first non-alcoholic beer that doesn't taste "boring". Very good job, dear brewers. The house has an elevator, which gives people with walking difficulties the opportunity to reach the upper floor.

Unfortunately, the food is still not at the same level as before! I ordered three types of meat in beer sauce with fried potatoes. The meat was prepared like goulash and the fried potatoes were briefly tossed past the pan. It was carelessly arranged. For over 20 euros I expect more!

We always enjoyed eating at the brewery, but unfortunately the service here was very poor. The waiter was unfriendly, the food for one person only came from the table after we had asked twice and everyone else had already finished. At the end of the evening we were fobbed off for a beer shower (unintentionally of course) with the words that we are all just human, there was no further excuse for that... We probably won't visit the restaurant again for this reason.

The offer in the brewery convinced us. And the staff was extremely committed and accommodating to us. And what was offered was delicious.

We reserved a table for 6 people last Saturday. We arrived about 10 minutes before time and were brought to the table by the friendly staff. The restaurant was very well attended. Drinks and food were ordered quickly. Everyone quickly had something to drink in front of them. After an hour of waiting, the waitress informed us that the food would take some time because there were some larger groups of guests in the house. Our actual two-hour time slot would have been completed, so we didn't have to worry about that. After another 30 minutes we gave a deadline of 10 minutes to provide the food. If this passed, we would pay for our drinks and leave. Unfortunately, that's exactly how it happened. We were looking forward to delicious food in the brewery and were disappointed. We felt sorry for the nice waitress because she had to put up with our displeasure, even though she certainly couldn't help it.

I only tried the beer. So much for the wheat and the Christmas beer. Quality good. I grew up in Bavaria. A slightly different style, but totally fine. There is another update for light and dark. Service is friendly and helpful. Light and dark are okay. Stable

Despite the full house, we organized a small table for our spontaneous visit today. The ambience always invites you to linger. Service is very important here. Despite the stress, you take the time to have a quick chat. Like a second family. The food is only recommended for both small and large guests. Always happy

I would like to thank you for the very good service in the brewery. I can only recommend this restaurant. My visit was delayed due to one problem accident on the highway... even though the kitchen was already closed... we still got something to eat for the child. Thank you for that.

Were there at 8:30 p.m. and received a very unfriendly welcome. Please choose a meal quickly because the kitchen wants to finish work. In principle, a note is completely fine, but you can also convey it in a friendly manner. Service itself was quick, the home-brewed beer tasted very tasty, we had the dark Zwickel and a Christmas beer. In addition, the ambience is really appealing due to the large cauldrons. The fried potatoes, on the other hand, were unfortunately not good, tasted anything but delicious and the schnitzel cannot be classified in the tender and mega delicious category either. But it was still ok. Another positive thing to note is that there was a bread basket with fresh bread and good-tasting lard. All in all, unfortunately just an average experience.

The beer is ok, tasty and at a good price. The service guy is a DISASTER! I have never experienced such arrogant service. The gentleman was rude and had no ability to talk to the customer. Avoid. It's a waste of time. There are other places nearby. The food was average, so I can't recommend it. P.S. not for Auslanders.

Recession brewery Here is a statement about today's visit to the Brauhaus Dessau. We were visiting Dessau, first at the Christmas market and then we wanted to have lunch at the brewery again. When we walked into the restaurant we saw a waitress standing at the counter. At first glance, some tables were occupied. As usual in most restaurants, we waited to be seated. After a while, the calm-looking waitress asked as she passed how she could help us. She said we could choose a table. After we sat down I observed the situation. I still only saw one waitress. Since we both come from the catering industry, we immediately noticed that something was going wrong here. One waitress for at least 8 occupied tables!! The waitress came to us, brought us the cards and apologized that she was alone. You could tell that she was overwhelmed. The restaurant was filling up more and more, with even larger groups arriving who had apparently made reservations and were seated. For us, a reason to get up and leave the restaurant. We absolutely do not blame the waitress for the situation. Hats off to her performance!!! But if we tolerate such situations, we shouldn't be surprised that German gastronomy is slowly dying out. We all know the personnel situation. The management then has to react and pull the ripcord and shorten the opening times and not exploit the few good employees and leave them alone. If the staff shortage occurred at short notice, the boss has to take action herself. We ended up in another location where the service concept is lived. Here the boss pitched in, even though there were several waiters on site...it wasn't a German restaurant! It's a shame for German gastronomy.

We ate here on Monday with 14 adults and 2 small children. As always, the atmosphere was very nice, everything was well maintained and clean. Our waitress was quick and attentive. After the respective orders were taken, the drinks and later the food were brought promptly. Overall, almost everyone was satisfied with their food. Those who had fried potatoes in their menu, i.e. my wife and I, were unlucky: lukewarm and completely without anything. That means no spring onions, no spices, just bland. I had brawn with fried potatoes, theoretically you can't go wrong. But even the tartar sauce didn't deserve the name. Any vegetables drowned in yogurt, done. Not my thing. When I went to the toilet there was a sign saying "Chef wanted", aha maybe that was why. There was no service upstairs either, everything was dark. We learned that there were not enough operating staff. Let everyone think for themselves, I was incredibly disappointed because I've eaten much better here this year, fried potatoes and brawn by the way...

Nice, fast service in a sober brewery atmosphere. Spent bread and greaves, a nice welcome gesture from the kitchen. Both very tasty. Home-brewed beers are very tasty and highly recommended. There is still potential for improvement in the main courses. Schnitzel should be freshly prepared and the breading is also cross, unfortunately that wasn't the case. Potato wedges are the way you want them, peas and carrots can use more pep. Cauliflower with a slight bite, not cooked to death, praiseworthy. Chicken schnitzel, steak four not recommended to be fried to death, season the mushroom sauce a little bolder. I'd love to come back. For a nice evening with friends, recommended despite the small tips.

It looks like you can eat meat such as geese and deer if it matches the hunting season. Because it was the right season, I ordered goose thigh meat, red cabbage, and potatoes. The goose was very similar to duck meat, but it was cooked well and was really delicious, and the red cabbage was the kick! JMT (The man spoke English very well, so ordering was very convenient)

The food was just average. But the beer is definitely recommended. The service was okay, but a bit snippy in some places. I don't think I'll come again.

We had dinner here with the family. The ambience is really beautifully done, you feel comfortable. Our waitress was pretty funky and on the ball, even though her expression told otherwise. Nevertheless, we were looking forward to our meal. However, we were quite disappointed. Kale, which was quite salty, after pointing this out we were told we were the only ones who saw it that way. “Fried potatoes” that were a mess and that I can buy exactly like that in a plastic bag in the supermarket and have absolutely nothing to do with fried potatoes. Different sized side salads, no one knows why.

It looks quite like a historic place and its charme is the diminishing culture of East German cuisine. Their focus point is obviously a kind of place to have a good meal, good beer, but first of all to create an atmosphere of event gastronomy with all sorts of facettes. So don't expect too much quality of food but rather a good time in a relaxed atmosphere.

Surrounded by lost places, the Zum Alten Dessauer is a restaurant in the typical brewery style with a pleasant atmosphere. The food is rustic. The prices are OK. The beer - we tried the Helle Zwickel and the Weizen - is delicious and should be the reason to visit the brewery.

Three of us were here today! Great dining on several floors and outdoor seating. Super tasty food and generous portions (1/2 duck and grilled knuckle). The home-brewed Hefeweizen was exactly my drink, for my other two companions it was the home-brewed Pilsner. The service also left nothing to be desired, we will be back!!!! Thank you for the lovely evening.

Super hyggeligt sted, men betjeningen var meget arrogant. Vi følte nærmest at vi var til besvær. Vi skyndte os at spise vores mad, og vi kommer nok ikke igen.

Weil es mir am 1. Abend so gut gefallen hat, bin ich insgesamt 3 mal dort gewesen. Es herrscht eine angenehme, entspannte Atmosphäre, der Gastgarten ist sehr schön, schattig und ruhig gelegen. Das Bier ist lecker, erstaunlichweise insb das alkoholfreie Zwickel, das Essen ist gut und reichlich und wo gibt es noch Schmalz und Brot als kleine Vorspeise. Hervorzuheben ist der Service: aufmerksam, zügig und einfach nett und wohl mit Spaß bei der Sache. Punktabzug gibt's dafür, dass das Essen echt zu schnell kam, dadurch war die Soljanka nicht richtig heiß und die Bratkartoffeln schienen durchaus selbstgemacht, aber auf Vorrat zubereitet und dadurch labbrig.

nice ambience, nice service, my meal was a joke for a main course. some salmon on 2 small potato pancakes (from the ready-made package) with horseradish cream, half a plate full of salad (wasn't on the menu) for just under 20.00 euros, visually the amount of a starter. We chose the restaurant assuming that cooking would still be done here. Price performance wasn't right. A pity -
