Brauhaus Sünner im Walfisch in Köln

Nach mehr als 20 Jahren waren wir wieder ein Mal im Walfisch - für Nostalgiker hat sich nichts verändert. Blanke Tische, altehrwürdiges Holz und tatsächlich noch ein echter Köbes (wenn auch in Teilzeit). Bedienung war freundlich und schnell, Sünner Kölsch wohlschmeckend und die Speisekarte brauhauslike. Wir waren nicht enttäuscht.

Excellent Brauhaus in Cologne, typical, very popular place; the cuisine on offer is based on meats and vegetables, of excellent quality and well cooked; excellent white wine from the area, the Kolsch is delicious, but if you don't want too much remember to cover the glass! Must try

My favorite Kölsch gastro. Every year again. Service was super friendly and the food was excellent.

The waitress spilled beer all over me and chose not to apologise. I told another waitress who said “I didn’t see anything”. I then spoke to the owner who said “how should we fix this” while touching me as if he wanted to fight. Ironically, I work as security, but chose not to participate in his desperate approaches to pick up a fight outside or whatever he wanted? Such a weird and unpleasant experience. Disgusting. I cannot recommend this to anyone

Went there with great expectations and left with great disappointment. Not recommended as a new customer. Regular guests are given preferential treatment and new guests are deliberately left out because they won't come back again anyway. Certainly not after an evening like this. Waited 90 minutes for food. Fries horribly fried in old fat. Prices ok. Quality works like that. Little homemade cooking. A lot of it is instant and frozen. That's why they shamelessly make guests wait 90 minutes for their food. But you can earn a lot from drinks during that time. The only positive thing was the friendly service, otherwise not recommended!

Very good beerhouse. I did not try the beer as they are not gluten-free. My colleagues liked the beer. The dinner came fast (relatively) despite the beerhouse was full. The food was nicely served. I went for the safe gluten-free version: potatoe, sauerkraut and pork chop. The others ordered hamburgers and they looked amazing. They reay enjoyed it.

Classic, rustic brewery atmosphere. Very unfriendly service, we were initially shouted at and there was a discussion because a guest on our reservation didn't want to join us until later. The schnitzel was frozen with ready-made sauce, salad was good, as was the tapa plate. There are other addresses in the city that are much more worthwhile if you want to go to the brewery.

Quaint restaurant with a lot of charm - the food was delicious, the service was friendly and the Kölsch was original as it should be. Absolutely authentic experience!

A group of 10 of us had drinks and food. Everyone seemed happy enough and the Kolsch and schnapps flowed nicely. I would go here again when visiting Cologne.

We visited the restaurant with external colleagues from all corners of the country. Everyone was thrilled by the Cologne flair. There is nothing wrong with the food and drink. The service was attentive and not at all intrusive. People like to return here.

We were guests with a larger group. The service was good and very nice. The food was really tasty and at a fair price-performance ratio. Our seats near the entrance weren't that good. It was quite quick and cool, as the usher in particular had to go in and out very often, there was smoking in the entrance area in front of the door, etc. I would ask for a different seat for the next visit.

The food was good, service was great and the atmosphere was okay for a bar restaurant, we left full and satisfied.

It's not worth eating there. Very expensive, as plates come with 80% filling side dishes and only about 120 grams of meat. The ambiance and service are good.

Habe schon viele Brauhäuser besucht, hier gab es das mit großem Abstand beste Himmel und Äd, das ich je gegessen habe. Sensationell lecker, 5 Sterne, bin total begeistert.

Very old brewery that we visited for dinner after the musical have. The food came quickly. The portions could be a bit larger for the price. As long as you don't put the lid on your glass, the drinks will be served promptly. All in all a successful evening.

On Saturday evening I was with my cousin just to drink Kölsch in a small compartment without food. Was very fun and cozy.

A great brewery experience! We were at the Walfisch at the Sünner brewery and were completely satisfied. The food was super tasty – we were particularly impressed by the schnitzel with sambal sauce and the bratwurst. Despite the full house, the service was excellent: friendly, attentive and courteous. The ambience is exactly what you would expect from a traditional brewery - rustic and quaint. The price-performance ratio is also absolutely right. If you are looking for an authentic Cologne brewery, you have come to the right place. Clear recommendation!

Pro: nice service Cons: Food tasteless. Partly cold. The food went back to the next table to warm up. It didn't achieve much. Plus very expensive. All in all a tourist rip-off because they only come once. Very disappointing.

Top address in the old town. Very tasty food, top service (thanks to André and Gino), and a nice ambience. The Kölsch should be replaced. That's ok, but one or two Kölsch brands would suit the house better. Absolutely recommended 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Enjoy a good schnitzel while passing through. It is directly connected to a Tesla supercharger, so that is also nice if you drive electrically.

A very enjoyable old town experience. Nice draft beer and a pleasant atmosphere apart from a load of nairdowells from northern England who sat in the pub area with us. We had a lovely chat with the owners and were really tempted to stay for dinner.

Hatten uns auf einen netten Abend im Brauhaus gefreut. Essen war bei allen 5 Personen Grotte. Die Haxen waren trocken und laberig. In jedem anderen Brauhaus dauert eine Haxe mindestens.40 Minuten, hier 15. Dickebohnen mit eigenem Speck, Speck total versalzen. Tip vom Köbes, nimm Senf dann schmeckt. Brauhauskotlett war in der Mitte eiskalt. Waren auch nicht wirklich am Service interessiert. Nie wieder.

Without words. We've just come from the Sünner. We're just disappointed with the food. The knuckles were cold, they're 50% fat, you can only put them in the bin. A friend had ordered the schnitzel, it was too salty, that's still humanely put. After a complaint, the waitress said you should add mustard, then it's better to enjoy.🤑 The shop was uncomfortable and cold. Service not motivated. Local is not recommended.

personale molto simpatico e una straordinaria cameriera con il sorriso stampato in faccia; anche oltremodo agitata ma quanto Calore, soprattutto pensando alla fredda Germania del Nord! Da bere, le classiche kolsch, nulla da poter aggiungere sul tema; oltre che sono leggere beve, se ne possono buttare giù a fiumi. Sul cibo però ho qualcosa da dire, non ho trovato nulla che possa lasciare entusiasti, piatti nella media e vista la monotonia dei menu delle birrerie locali meglio puntare almeno a una cucina che metta la marcia in più (e mi vengono in mente almeno 10 opzioni più o meno nelle vicinanze). Insomma, lo consiglio se si vuole rimanere vicino al centro per bere in compagnia, per cena meglio puntare ad altro.

Were there with 5 people. Food was close, yes. All the knuckles were cold and not crispy. Smoked pork belly with the broad beans is totally over-salted to the point of being completely unreasonable. If we wanted to try another brewery in Cologne, it would have saved us more money.

The brewery offers an excellent selection of home-style dishes. The extremely courteous and efficient service staff ensures everything runs smoothly; empty glasses will be replaced immediately. The employees are characterized by their friendly and humorous nature and give the impression that they enjoy their work. The dishes are rich and prepared with obvious care. Small details, such as the sprig of thyme decorating the pork knuckle, underline the high quality. Tip: reserve a table! Spontaneous is usually not possible!

Food was very tasty and the service was top 10/10

Super tasty “choice fish burger”. We have been coming to the brewery for many years. Unfortunately the service has deteriorated greatly. Last year our favorite Köbes was still there, but now unfortunately only slightly overwhelmed service staff. We had been stuck on dry land for quite a long time. From a rustic Cologne brewery to a simple restaurant... what a shame. Luckily the burger is still top class! and an absolute recommendation.

I ordered a burger. Since I'm pregnant, I specifically mentioned that it had to be well cooked. Unfortunately, when I got the food, the burger was still raw inside. I complained about it and got it after 20 A new one in a few minutes, but again it wasn't through. The cellar lady was very nice and said she was sorry and she mentioned it several times in the kitchen that I was pregnant. She asked me to try another dish, but I refused because I had lost my appetite. My friends had already finished eating. The portions were also very small. A man would not be fed. The waitress waived my drinks from the bill, which I thought was very nice.

Dishes are good, but the portion is too small for the price. Afterwards we had to go to the kebab house.

We were at the Sünner brewery on Saturday lunchtime, so it was very busy. The two of us got a place without any problem. Unfortunately it took a good 10-15 minutes for someone from service to come to us. We observed that several people felt this way. One of the two waitresses ran the place more or less alone. She ripped it out for us too. The other waitress only tried to attract regular customers. However, the food was excellent, the best sauerbraten I've had in a long time, and the veal schnitzel was also good. The Sünner Kölsch is tasty and tasty. The atmosphere is quaint and cozy. So in itself a nice visit to a rustic Cologne brewery. We would go again.

We reserved a table for 13 people after we had a very fun and successful brewery/old town tour. The table was actually too small, but we arranged ourselves. We were served quickly and well. Food was tasty, but definitely not enough on the plates for the price - at least for a few dishes. Veal schnitzel is more expensive, but what was delivered for the price was already borderline.

By far the best Kölsch pub in the best location and fresh, delicious food. The service is warm and courteous, it's like coming home every time. A must for every visit to Cologne!

Great Cologne atmosphere. Nice waitresses with humor. Add some delicious draft beer and the evening started well. Unfortunately little vegetarian selection.

It was once again a perfect New Year's Eve dinner at the Sünner Brauhaus. You always feel welcome. Ate very well, not a long wait and the service would have gotten six stars from us, unfortunately there are only 5 to choose from. It's just the kind, unfeigned, natural way that you're treated to. Delicious food and very good, individual service

Honestly from the reviews I expected more. Pot roast was too hard and the sauce had A LOT of vinegar in it. The portion was for a small hunger. Prices aren’t cheap - 30 euro for Wiener schnitzel. Small tables where you can’t get comfortable to fit as many guests as possible. The only good thing was the fast service and good beer. The waitress seemed to be drunk. Disappointing overall.

The staff was very rude. We ordered only two beers without food because we heard some nice thing about their kölsch, and also the place was already full of people. When we finished and wanted to pay and leave, the staff at the bar told us they did not take credit cards (which I doubt it ). It was ok , since we only ordered 2 beers. We paid in cash as a result , and we needed the changes. The staff at the bar did not have enough coins for the change, and one of his colleagues behind us came, and he simply "Pushes" us aside without any "excuse me " or something, and made his way to the bar and left the coins the the bar. That was totally very rude and mean.

The Sünner Kölsch is tasty and goes down well. The service was good, but our glasses often remained empty. The Kölsch serving frequency (KSV) could be increased slightly. All in all, a successful evening that deserves repeating

Of course, a classic in Cologne. Luckily we had reserved and the brewery was completely full. Of course, a brewery rustic ambience. When we were checking the menu a painting fell down to my and my friend’s heads. It was really hurtful and the only thing that they said to us was: yes it happens sometimes. I really do not recommend this place!!!!!!!! They are awful!! Please take care of yourself🙏🏻

Typical tourist trap. Every dish we had was out of the bag and tasteless. Also far too expensive. But 1 star more for the old-established ambience. Better go to the Belgian Quarter or just have a drink here.

Although this brewery is located in the middle of Cologne's old town, it has reasonable prices and very good food. We were there at lunchtime and it filled up quite quickly downstairs. I ate the 650 gr cutlet with fried potatoes and couldn't finish eating. A paradise for meat lovers. The other dishes also looked very good. And the Sünner Kölsch is somewhat similar to the Gaffel Kölsch. Great service and highly recommended. We'd love to come back.

Best brewery in Cologne. Everything is great

I give this place 5 stars mainly for the food and atmosphere. The highlights were the pork knuckle (schweinshaxe) and the chocolate lava cake (both of them were a dream). Main down side was the slow service. It took SO long to even get our menus and place the order. From when we sat down to when we got our food, it took over an hour. They did not accept walk-ins so make sure to reserve. It was peak season in December so I get it but I was so ready to leave after 2 hours, everything took so long. However.. the level of food made up for it.

Just to feel good here :) There is also good Kölsch

We came here for the first time as a couple on the 3rd of Advent following a recommendation. Very quaint, nice atmosphere. Nice service. Unfortunately, the warm dish was cold and much too thick for a cutlet - so it was probably not cooked through. The temperature at the neighboring table was also complained about. The Cologne tapas were ok - (although the black pudding that we ordered was also served). There was a schnapps on the house for that.

Kölle! I claim that you can find some of the best sauerbraten in Cologne here. Oh, throughout the whole republic! The waiters are very on the ball and impress with their typical Köll dialect. The Kölsch hisses and the ambience is simply beautiful given its age. The sauerbraten is a stunner. Tasty, lots of sauce, perfect dumplings and red cabbage form a symphony that lets your taste buds party. We weren't there for the first nor the last time. 😁 Please keep it up!

Super tasty food, schnitzel and burger are recommended! The waiter was very rude, we asked for the menu and the best man did not bring it. When we asked another waiter for a menu, the first waiter came back 1 minute later to take our order. We say that we haven't looked yet because we only just got the menus, he gives US an eye roll and walks away. He avoided eye contact with us for the rest of the evening and we were unable to order any more drinks from him. No tip, too bad boy. Very tasty food! Xoxo

In the center of Cologne near the markets, a warm and welcoming environment. Friendly, smiling and polite staff, excellent typical German food. Koln beer super!!! A very pleasant evening in a particular environment, absolutely to be repeated ❤️

Unfortunately, we made the mistake and reserved a table for 8 people there for an Advent Saturday. We got 2 tables. In order to have a conversation with each other, we kept silent. We then put the tables together ourselves. Ok, you can do it...the service also has a lot to do. You can wait a long time for the drinks. Unfortunately also on the food. Only the schnitzel and the knuckle were good quality. Bratwurst and especially steak are highly discouraged. The steak was ordered medium and came to the table rare. Ok… complained. The steak didn't come back for a while. Went to the front of the counter and asked. Unfortunately, no service staff came to our table. So there was no drink with the meal🙈. Steak arrived at us completely burnt after about 15 minutes. You really couldn't eat. Complained again. The friendly service person then complained to her boss that we thought everything was “shit”. But we never said that. But it is true that we are not satisfied. We were then allowed to have an underground conversation with the boss. Conclusion of the visit: drank 2 Kölsch in two hours and left the shop hungry.

We asked for a table, and all we got was a lazy nod—no words, no explanation. The staff need to work on their language and communication skills. Maybe some basic English lessons would be a good idea.

When I read some reviews I ask myself: Why do I go to a rustic brewery? It is one of the most beautiful breweries for me. Great staff, great food, and very cozy. If the volume bothers you, just don't go, because that's Cologne as it lives. Each of our visits, which is a must for us, is an experience. It's not a 5 star restaurant, it's Cologne the way we love it.😍😍

After we were able to reserve a table (Saturday, November 30th, 2024) and had to search for a parking space for ages, we felt very good. The food was very good.

Pretty brazen service, absolutely didn't want to accept card payment. We don't make any further visits there. I didn't say I couldn't pay by card. Another waiter was then sent to us, who accepted the card payment without hesitation.
