Brauhaus Sünner im Walfisch in Köln

Just fine. Not great, not bad. Atmosphere is pretty much missing completely. Service is lackluster. I wouldn’t visit again, even though the food was pretty alright. For international tourists this might be a novelty and worth it, but as a European i expected more for 4,7 stars on here. Maybe just search for something else if you can.

Brauhaus Sünner im Walfisch offers a charming, authentic atmosphere and great food. The haxe was flavorful, though it could have been a bit crispier with more time in the oven. The sweet mustard complemented the tangy sauerkraut beautifully. I also tried the Sünner Weizen wheat beer, which tasted refreshing and smooth.

Had booked a table for dinner. Everything was very tight and loud. Hardly understood our own words. Service force was very nice. Food was delicious but we all had cold food.

Very central with a rustic atmosphere and friendly service. Unfortunately a bit expensive but tasty.

We actually really liked it. Köbe's typical kölsch 😅. Kölsch is served until the lid is on the glass. Super child friendly. There is a children's card with a coloring picture, pens and instructions not to pick up a cell phone 😄. We think the ambience is great, typical brewery. One star deduction because of the food. My savoy cabbage was lukewarm, as was the mashed potatoes with the knuckle. The knuckle was a bit weak in taste. Nevertheless we would come back

Food (sky and ääd) was excellent. Unfortunately, the restaurant was very crowded and you couldn't understand your own words. The two of us were seated at a table with a loud group in the aisle. Atmosphere/ambience not recommended. Food and drinks were great.

We wanted to eat one of Cologne's specialities, black pudding with mashed potato, onion, and apple in a traditional pub. This was spot on with their own beer to drink with it. The staff were absolutely lovely, too. Really good evening

Friendly staff, delicious Kölsch

Unfortunately, the Sünner has lost its shine. Bad and unfriendly service. You get the feeling that it's all about processing the tourists quickly so that the next ones can come. It used to be very cozy here, but unfortunately it's no longer up to date. The food is still okay, but it's available everywhere and cheaper. We are no longer regular guests.

We were here with a large group of people suffering from COPD. The reservation and entry went well and I was very surprised at how big the brewery is inside. The food and drink was delicious for us, the service was quick and friendly, we felt very comfortable and I will go there again. Even alone 😅👍

It's always a feast to eat at your place or simply enjoy a few Kölsch in front of your door! It's practically always the first stop for us when we're in the city. Not least because of the typical Cologne staff, who have their tongues loose and their hearts in the right place. Stay as you are, we'll definitely be back.

A great Uhliges brewery with delicious food, everything a bit smaller. But watch comfortably. Definitely not the last time there. 🥰

I had a sauerbraten and it was really great. Freshly tapped Kölsch, perfect, friendly service with the typical local humor of the Köbe. I just like the place. The small windows upstairs, the small counter with the bar tables... we'll be back!!

We had to beg but managed to get seats in this crazy restaurant. The owner took us under his wing and made sure we were taken care of. The place was super popular with a lit of locals. The food and beer was amazing. We all wished we could go back.

I was here a few days ago and ate the Rhenish sauerbraten. The red cabbage was also quite good, juicy and the taste was right. The dumpling was a bit lacking in taste, but the sauce made up for it a little. What was noticeably weak on the plate was the main player, namely the sauerbraten itself. There was a lack of acid here for my taste. In addition, the meat was quite tough and dry, had some cartilage or similar harder areas. It was also cut much thicker than I'm used to with a sauerbraten, but that's irrelevant from a rating perspective. In short, the roast was edible, but no more. Too bad. The service was friendly and relatively quick. I would like to divide the ambience a little. Purely in terms of the design of the guest room, it is great. Lots of wood, authentic for the old town, really beautiful. The open guest room also has a big disadvantage - the noise. It's just incredibly difficult to have a conversation here. I don't know much about prices in Cologne, but compared to similar restaurants in other cities, I would describe it as rather high-priced, but without completely breaking out of the usual realm. Would I come back? Well, maybe. It wouldn't be my first choice. Still, it's an option.

We had a very nice evening and all 9 of us had a delicious meal. Very nice service and now we are on the ship towards Amsterdam. Thanks for the nice evening..

Typical Kölsches Brauhaus with simple but delicious 😋 cuisine

Unfortunately we didn't have a good experience. Four of us ate there. A dish was forgotten and had to be ordered again, which is just not nice with four people when one person has nothing and the others have to eat otherwise theirs will get cold. The waiter who was responsible for us wasn't good overall, didn't take our orders and the drinks that were ordered took ages to arrive. The highlight was when we asked another Köbe if he could provide us with drinks. He then became cheeky and rude; his behavior had nothing to do with the cheeky nature of the boy. Two stars because the food was good. Update 12.2022 Went here again with work colleagues and this time we had a great Köbes who, even though the place was packed, had everything in view. The food tasted good, but unfortunately it was no longer hot, just warm. But the visit was enough for me to get a star upgrade.

The best Kölsch you'll get anywhere in the world!

The beer is tasting very light and fresh! I like it a lot. And ordered pork knuckle as every time visiting Germany. This size is ok for me, the sauerkraut is a bit different than my memory, but good anyway, so does the mash potatoes!

The three of us were there last week as part of a city tour that also took us to Cologne. The atmosphere is rustic and very cozy, the service is friendly and on the ball. The food was rustic but also very tasty, as was the Kölsch. Therefore a clear recommendation!

Now THIS is a proper German restaurant. German food tends to be too mealy and dry, not so here. Great staff, no nonsense. Highly recommend all of their entrees.

The food was quite okay, but the knuckle was totally dry and the waitress was totally unfriendly when collecting the money and wanted to collect more than she had ordered and when you wanted to give her a drink she wanted to say that you had supposedly given her a bill that you didn't even have in your wallet.

Roast schweinhaxer is what we ordered and ate. Skin is chewy (instead of cripsy). The meat is dark and tastes not great. However, service and reception are friendly, attentive, and nice.

The knuckle was tasty but had better :D But the dessert (chocolate cake with a liquid center) was outstanding - highly recommended. Service was very nice. I'd love to come back for dessert

Located almost directly at Heumarkt, so easily accessible by public transport. So tasty, incredibly good service. We sat upstairs. One ambience point deducted because the background noise is really bad.

Traditional gastronomy in the middle of Cologne not far from the banks of the Rhine. Selection of food and drinks appropriate. Food tastes good, Kölsch is served quickly without waiting. The dining room is air-conditioned, which is more than pleasant at temperatures of around 30°C. In my opinion, prices are slightly excessive, even for Cologne conditions. Bouncers tended to have a deterrent effect on me.

I asked the waitress for a regional dish and in response I received a dish called... ,, Himmel & Ääd“ Op Walfisch Aat ,, It was brilliant, delicious, outstanding! Heaven and earth Of course, I ordered the local Kölsh beer, which is served in a 200ml glass, the beer itself is light and refreshing, perfect for hot days❤️ The waitress spoke excellent English, so there was no problem when placing the order ❤️ That's appreciated 😉 Thank you and see you soon!

Small, clear brewery over 2 floors. You shouldn't drink too much upstairs, you'll have to go back down the stairs at some point. Service was great, immediately recognizes the tourist in you. Food was perfect. We'll be back when we're in Cologne again.

The two positive aspects first: the ancient walls have a special ambience and the service was impeccable. However, the food was an imposition. I had cordon bleu with fried potatoes and salad. The Cordon Bleu apparently came from the Metro, was flat and had an indefinable taste. The fried potatoes were greasy and burnt. You had to look for the salad plate. A pure disgrace at the price asked. Since tastes differ when it comes to beer, I won't comment here. In summary I have to say: never again!

Mis information - beer in the menus did not say alcohol free, yet in the bottle it states alcohol free. Terrible customer service! The girl who was serving us was rude and made me feel awkward about Returning a beer that was not clearly stated that it was alcohol free. She took it away to check and quickly came back and abruptly said “we are not taking it off the bill, so drink it or not” then slams the drinks on the table. After this incident she did not check up on us once, meanwhile she was checking up on all the 5-6 tables full of young guys around us! I had the pork which was tough and very chewy. Don’t recommend at all. The vibe was good because it was the Euros

Every time I’m in Köln I’m in here, fantastic food great staff can’t do enough for you. Great selection of specialty drinks 👍 just ask. One of the oldest restaurants in Köln rich in history it’s no wonder the river cruises always call in! Try booking in advance but not always needed as they will try to accommodate it’s a must in Köln

Great brewery with good Kölsch but unfortunately absolutely unpleasant and aggressive behavior from the waiter. You get an unwanted and unprovoked conversation about how disgusting the Greens and Ms. Baerbock are and that you can only vote for the AfD. Right-wing extremist election recommendations for beer? No thanks. The encounter really ruined our evening.

Typical brauhaus with good beer, but where customer service is not central. He didn't have room for our group, so we had to stand in front of the building. When it started to rain we took shelter in the entrance. The host became angry that we were not allowed to stand here.

When I came in and sat down next to my wife, a young, tall lady serving food came and asked me to sit at another table. So I was supposed to sit back to back with my wife and the other friends. This was also the case with another friend who was also part of our German/Chinese group of seven. This woman's tone resembled that of a political commissar, which is what I told her. Then I got the next rejection.🤪 Your answer is not entirely correct: There were actually more people than we expected. I literally called her political commissar! The couple at the table had specifically said that they wouldn't mind if I sat with them.

I was a guest at a company event and the evening was great. Very good food, delicious beer, fantastic, very friendly and attentive staff. I will always be your guest on future visits to the city.

They claim to be the oldest Kölsch brewery in the world, and the Kölsch is certainly quite different to the other Kölschs around. Atmosphere is amazing and the service too, so be sure to book a table if you don’t want to eat anywhere else. The food is freshly prepared, unlike some of the other breweries in the area, but my Haxe was slightly dry, which means that it is probably worth continuing the search.
