Berggasthof Hahnenkamm in Alzenau

High up on the mountain... YES, really, on the Hahnenkamm and beneath the Ludwig Tower, there's a great restaurant. Many hikers and cyclists stop here and enjoy rustic food at reasonable prices. There are, of course, schnitzels in all varieties, but my highlight: mountain cheese with farmhouse bread. A semi-solid, creamy delight! Oh, and the drive there and back... there are a few parking spaces. For the last two kilometers, you'd better hope no one's coming down; it's incredibly narrow and there are hardly any passing places.

The Gasthof Hahnenkamm in Alzenau is definitely worth a visit! We were thrilled by the great atmosphere and the beautiful location. The food was delicious, there's a good selection, and the drinks also leave nothing to be desired. An absolute highlight is the view from the Ludwig Tower – the view over the landscape is simply fantastic and makes the visit a special experience. The service was friendly and attentive. Overall, a clear recommendation for anyone who wants to combine good food with an impressive view. We'd love to come back!

It was my first time there, so I'll be cautious. The staff was friendly and efficient. My venison goulash was edible.

Beautifully situated in the forest on our Hahnenkamm mountain in the Kahlgrund valley. It's ideal for cyclists, hikers, and drivers. Dogs are also welcome. You can, of course, come for dinner as a group, although reservations are recommended. The food is good, home-style fare, and there may be a slight wait during peak times, but that's understandable.

Every Friday and public holiday is Hax'ntag (Hax Day). A dream of a Haxe.

The food is okay if you don't want meat. The poor waiter was hopelessly overwhelmed today in the good weather, and the food and drinks were delivered incorrectly. Sitting with other people at a table with four people is generally discouraged; the locals prefer to keep to themselves... Don't ask if there's room at the regulars' table, even if there's only one person there 🙄 "Village pub" would be more appropriate here. For a quick stop, it's perfectly fine. The lady with the menus was nice but stressed.

Absolutely, highly recommended! The staff are so friendly, you feel at home and after a beer and good food you can go for a hike through the countryside or continue on by bike. They are also very dog-friendly and I can only recommend them wholeheartedly!

I was at the beer garden with my mother. We both wanted a schnitzel, but knew the portions were very large, so we asked if it was possible to order a children's schnitzel each. The answer was, "Then we'll make a senior portion." We both thought it was great that they were so flexible. We also ordered a side salad. It arrived quite quickly and, disappointingly, all the salads were from a bucket, nothing was homemade, and a generous amount of dressing was poured over them. Then our senior schnitzel arrived: a schnitzel with fries. It didn't even come close to the schnitzels at the Hofgarten or the Krokodil in Aschaffenburg. This one had more breading than meat; the meat was as thin as a napkin and tasted of old frying oil. The "best" part, however, was the bill at the end. The regular portion costs €13.50, which is very reasonable for two schnitzels with fries. The children's schnitzel with fries, the portion we actually had, but which the owner declared as a senior citizen's portion, costs €7.50 according to the menu. You'd think our "senior citizen portion" wouldn't be much more expensive, but you'd be wrong. Our portion cost €12.50, just €1.40 less for half the portion! I wouldn't have wanted any more of the schnitzel, but the price is ridiculous! We won't need that again.

On June 20, 2025, we arrived at the top around 4 p.m. after a hike. The waitress (female, approximately 50 years old, short blonde hair) skillfully ignored us despite a friendly "Hello." She walked past two people without a word. Respect. We decided to move on. What a shame!

Beautifully located refreshment stop in the middle of the forest. From the hiking car park you can go up in about 45 minutes with a steady incline. Then a spot in the sun and a cool drink, very nice. The waitresses were a bit disorganized, but friendly.

If you want to charge your e-bike, please ask the staff first. Fast service

Once you have made the climb, you end up at this inn. Simple but good. Since we "only" ate the apple pie, I can't say anything about the food. The apple pie was good. You can sit outside and receive friendly service.

Very nicely located destination with very tasty food at fair prices. Friendly hospitality. Reachable on foot, by bike or by car. Because there are limited parking spaces at the top of the restaurant, it is better to take the parking spaces slightly below and walk the last few meters. From the top of the Ludwigsturm you have a magnificent view of the Rhine/Main area up to the skyline of Frankfurt. absolutely recommended.

The Berggasthof Hahnenkamm can be reached by car, but very narrow streets where sometimes you can't get two cars past each other. Once you're there, you have the opportunity to enjoy the great view all the way to Frankfurt. Unfortunately, our day was very cloudy and hiking is also very possible there. And then a short detour to the Hahnenkamm mountain inn. The only thing we would complain about when eating is the bratwurst with sauce and fries, unfortunately we don't know that where we come from 😅.

A very great restaurant! Went there recently after a walk to the Hahnenkamm. The selection isn't the largest, but the dishes taste very tasty. The drinks were brought extremely quickly, the food after about 15 minutes. Beautifully decorated, pleasantly warm. It was heated with a wood stove. The prices were okay. We paid around €45 for 2 Cordon Bleus and 3 drinks.

The two of us were in the restaurant on Christmas Eve around 11am. We just wanted to drink something but the waitress said quite harshly that everything was reserved. There were only 2 tables occupied. The reservations were mostly without names and only reserved from 1 p.m. We then drank a mulled wine that we had outside and noticed that a family of 8 people who hadn't made a reservation had gotten a table. I found this simply impossible for a hiking restaurant. By the way, the mulled wine was very good

Very cozy, real mountain hut feeling. Unique in our area! I have to add something here. I regularly experience a wide variety of table occupancy here with between 5 and perhaps over 80 guests. To do this, you also have to keep the staff on hand and pay them when they are standing around. I don't think it's fair to come in with a group of 25, possibly without a reservation (?), and then complain about overloading or a waiting time of 10 minutes. I also had to ask questions here and there and even endure being ignored. More and more people are losing touch with reality and are unable to divide the number of guests by the number of waiters from their SUV. The food is of course not haute cuisine. But the price/performance ratio is very good. All of this is enough for 5 stars.

It is a nice excursion restaurant/hiking hostel with very friendly staff. The menu/offer is good, hearty. Price-performance is okay. There is certainly still potential in terms of comfort/equipment, but since it is primarily a hikers' home, it is fine.

Food wasn't that good, everything was warmed up quickly. Service was also very slow. A lady has to serve all the tables so she will come back later. She has time for the local grandpas but no time for strangers. It's a shame, it's a nice location.

Been there for the first time. Service was not courteous and interrupted the order to serve the apparently more important regulars' table at the front. Service looks different. There are double standards when it comes to eating; the table next to us also had a side salad with their meal. But this was probably a regular guest. There were also vegetables between the lettuce leaves, for me only lettuce leaves from the local forest.

The food was very tasty, the service was unfortunately not recommended, unfortunately we were insulted. When we reordered drinks, our eyes were rolled and when we left the restaurant, other guests spoke negatively about us.

I can't judge the food because I wasn't served after 10 minutes of waiting and couldn't order a drink or food. When I asked the counter for a card, nothing happened. The young lady behind the counter was bored typing something on her cell phone and obviously didn't feel like serving outside...

We were there in a larger group (approx. 25 people). Ambiance was good. Food was also quite good (Jäger schnitzel). Unfortunately, me and a colleague once received nothing and once only received 50% of our drink order (even after asking twice from the apparently extremely overwhelmed waiter). CONCLUSION: OK, if you can cope with slightly overwhelmed and therefore somewhat unfriendly waiters.

Meanwhile, anything but good! We have been coming to the Hahnenkamm for more than 40 years, be it by bike or on foot. Over the decades, the restaurant has gradually lost quality, especially when it comes to the food. Even though the new owner and his team try to do justice to the customers as good hosts, there is a lack of good quality food. Here too, the shortage of skilled workers seems to be a hallmark. We will head to the restaurant in the future, but without having a meal. It's a shame, it used to be so delicious!

Yes, the food is good, one star deducted because of the salad. You have to order the salad separately and pay, then you end up with over €20 for a schnitzel, for example.

One of the most beautiful beer gardens in the Spessart. Cozy in the middle of the Spessart Nature Park on the Hahnenkamm ridge. We like to come hiking or by bike. Highly recommended is the Handkäs with music and Äppler.

I can only rate the service as I couldn't get anything due to lack of cash. No card is accepted here, which is sad in itself. When I arrived I wanted to ask the waitress exactly that, but when I thought I only had a quick question, I received a waving hand and several decisive NO's! The waitress wasn't willing to exchange another word with me. I had to walk into the building first to be able to ask my question. Regrettable, really bad service. No matter whether the food tastes good or the beer is cold. That's a turn off. I wouldn't come here again.

We were there today. Were welcomed warmly and ordered fresh beef liver from the daily menu. You don't get that often in restaurants. The quality was very good! The staff is friendly and we really like the environment. Great view when the weather is nice. A short hike through the forest is definitely worth it.

The knuckles are an absolute blast (only available on Fridays). Quaint ambience, nice waiter and side salad (€4) was also okay... it's definitely worth a detour there

After about a sinful hike you reach the inn. You can sit inside or outside. There are typical beer benches on the outside (with backrests) and rustic chairs and tables on the inside.
