A truly impressive experiential dining experience steeped in rural American folklore: an ambiance somewhere between Route 66 and a rustic Midwestern barn, loud, lively, and somewhat over-the-top. A touch of road-trip romance, which might not be for everyone. Those who prefer a quieter atmosphere will likely feel less at home here. The food is solid and fitting the theme: honest cuisine without any major surprises. Not fine dining, but deliberately uncomplicated and down-to-earth. Overall, it's definitely a matter of taste – but precisely for that reason, it's also quite special. If you're open to the concept and fancy a loud, convivial evening with an American flair, you should definitely give it a try.

Visually appealing restaurant, but unfortunately, that's almost all it has going for it. The staff were friendly, but they got my order a bit mixed up, so I have to deduct points for that. The food only gets 2 out of 5. The chicken hot dog that was mistakenly delivered was unfortunately: 1. very small for around €20 2. seemingly/actually topped only with a little coleslaw and a few strips of chicken – also disappointing for the price 3. the bun was so crispy it was more like a rusk. The problem was that the coleslaw/sauce kept running over my fingers. Overall, there wasn't much choice. What was really nice was that the "sold-out" falafel burger from the daily specials menu was brought back due to high demand. However, the portion size was also rather below average. The pull-apart bread was okay but a bit greasy – which is understandable when you're topping bread with cheese. A small deduction for the ambiance as well, because of the service robot. Visually, it doesn't fit in at all with a BarellHouse / Steakhouse.

Yesterday, my wife, my team, and I celebrated my belated birthday at Barrel House in Neu-Ulm and had a truly wonderful evening. The service was attentive, friendly, and pleasantly uncomplicated from the very beginning. You immediately feel welcome and well taken care of. The food was consistently high-quality, perfectly seasoned, and beautifully presented. The drinks and recommendations were also spot on. The atmosphere is modern, stylish, and cozy – ideal for both private parties and team events. You can tell that the staff is passionate about their work and that quality is paramount. The only minor criticism: The prices are a bit higher overall. However, you do get excellent quality, great service, and a truly memorable experience. All in all, a very successful evening – we'd love to come back and can definitely recommend Barrel House.

My boyfriend and I were celebrating our two-year anniversary and were there with my son. I mentioned it on the phone and thought they would make it a bit more special, creating a more welcoming atmosphere for our two-year-old, as they had promised us that on the phone. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. Otherwise, everything was really great, especially the food.

The ribs are very good, the onion soup with cheese is delicious, the bread with cheese is also good, everything is presented very nicely, and the atmosphere inside is very nice. Unfortunately, it's expensive. The food is good, the portions are decent, but for that price you'd expect something more. Nevertheless, I recommend stopping by because the restaurant stands out.

My boyfriend and I ate at BarrelHouse today. To start, we ordered a Coke and a homemade lemonade. The lemonade was really delicious and refreshing. The Coke, however, unfortunately didn't taste like Coke at all, but more like cold sparkling water. There was hardly any flavor. For our main courses, we both ordered the filet steak medium with fries, coleslaw, and sweetcorn. The fries were very tasty, the salad was good, and the sweetcorn was fantastic. Unfortunately, the steak was a huge disappointment. We both ordered it medium, but my boyfriend's steak was still very raw and bloody inside. Mine was a little better, but overall very bland and under-seasoned. Furthermore, the meat was barely warm—not really hot, not even pleasantly warm, but almost cold. While it was quite juicy when we cut into it, the taste and temperature were simply unconvincing. We paid €105 for the entire meal. We definitely expected a different level of quality for that price. In our opinion, it wasn't worth the money. For a steak in this price range, you should expect the doneness, temperature, and taste to be just right. We realize we could have said something while we were there. However, we were so disappointed at the time that we decided to leave it at that. Overall, we give it two stars. We wouldn't come back for a steak. Perhaps other dishes on the menu are better, but we can't say for sure.

I'm so sorry I didn't discover this restaurant much sooner! From the food to the service to the ambiance, it's an absolute 100/10. Even though it might seem a bit pricey at first glance, believe me, the food is worth every penny! You can immediately tell the quality is excellent and, above all, that the kitchen knows exactly what it's doing. A huge compliment and thank you for this incredible culinary experience! You'll definitely be seeing me again!

Too long a wait for the food to arrive

The food was delicious. They have a wide selection, from meat dishes to vegetarian options. The portions are large. The prices are reasonable, and the service is friendly and attentive, especially the redhead with glasses who served us. Such attentive service is rare.

The spare ribs were exceptionally good, and the service was even better. We'll be back.

It's a very pleasant restaurant, but for me personally the lighting is a bit too dim! You can hardly read the menu items.

I made a reservation over a month in advance for Valentine's Day, and then shortly before, I was informed that I would be seated at a table with strangers or should cancel. Honestly, that's completely unacceptable. Especially on Valentine's Day, you expect privacy, not a "shared table" concept that you only find out about afterward. This should have been clearly communicated before the reservation. In my opinion, it's extremely unprofessional and not customer-friendly. I will not be making reservations here again and definitely cannot recommend them.

The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was really lovely. I'm deducting one star for the children's portions. Our child is almost two years old and wasn't satisfied with the portion of Spätzle and gravy. Instead of offering seconds, we had to order a completely new portion and pay full price.

The four of us were there for the first time and I was thrilled; the service was exceptionally friendly and always available 👍🏼 The only thing that seemed a bit odd was the service robot 🤖 I had the idea to dress it up as a tree 😀 Nevertheless, keep up the good work, we'll gladly come back 👍🏼

The food was consistently good. The ambiance was simply beautiful. One small drawback: we wanted to order dessert, but unfortunately, the kitchen was already closed.

Great restaurant, the food is really delicious. I found some of the tables to be very poor; I barely had room to eat because the table had an odd shape. However, not all the tables were like that; I was just unlucky. I also wasn't a fan of the chairs without backrests; they were more like stools, just made to look quaint, but you either love them or hate them. But I don't see any reason to give it fewer stars because everything was top-notch for what I came for. I'd gladly come again.

We've been there a few times recently. The food is always fantastic. Whether it's beef fillet, fish and chips, spare ribs, burgers, or cheese fondue, every meal has been amazing. The ambiance is American-style and very appealing and inviting. The atmosphere is very pleasant. The staff is always very friendly, humorous, and seemingly always available. Absolutely 10/10! We were a couple without a reservation. They spontaneously offered us a table and we had a little over an hour, which was perfectly fine for us. The food and drinks were an explosion of flavor. Incredibly delicious. In our opinion, the prices were absolutely justified. The ambiance was so cool and warm with perfect lighting. It had an American feel and was perfectly presented. Highly recommended in every respect – as well as making a reservation in advance, because otherwise you might not get a table :)

We dined here several times and, as always, received a warm and attentive welcome. Since we arrived quite early, we didn't have to wait long for our food. The steak was cooked to perfection, the spare ribs were tender, and the chicken salad was also delicious. Even though it was quite busy, the staff remained efficient and always checked on our needs. Nicely done with a wood-paneled atmosphere, the food was okay, but it felt like the clientele consisted mainly of locals who wanted to visit the town. Unfortunately, the service was terrible: inattentive, incorrect orders were taken, questions about the food couldn't be answered, and the electronic waiter was absolutely awful – completely out of place. The staff were constantly watching what the waiter was doing and never had time for their guests.

It's well known that life has become more expensive. That makes me all the more pleased to say that we spent every penny perfectly last night! After a wonderfully balanced aperitif, we enjoyed a club sandwich and ribs. The club sandwich was so juicy, layer after layer a delight! The quality of the ribs was amazing! The marinade was delicious and not overpowering, so the flavor of the meat didn't get lost. It came with a side salad, so lovingly prepared and presented – the mango dressing was divine! A vanilla milkshake à la J. Travolta and homemade ice cream rounded off this explosion of flavor. The service was friendly, always attentive without being intrusive. I'm raving because I see here that gastronomy with heart and a love for the product is still possible today. Thank you – we'll be back soon!

The food was good except for the steak (€35). It was unfortunately too cold, but they reheated it after we complained. Apparently, this happens quite often. There were four of us, so I can say that the other dishes were good. Overall, our experience was mixed. The fries were great. We had to wait 45 minutes for the bill, possibly because we had a voucher and wanted to pay the rest by card. Therefore, we didn't leave a tip. It can get quite chilly near the entrance, so they should be careful with seating arrangements.

The ribs were fantastic, and the dog with solomillo was simply delicious. They served really great fries again, the service was friendly, and the location was cool with amazing decor and a robot. I'd gladly come again; it was even possible to go without a reservation...

A fantastic American steakhouse-style restaurant! The decor and atmosphere are simply perfect and instantly make you feel at home. Everything is lovingly designed in a wood style with many small details, from a miniature still to a motorcycle and large barrels – you always discover something new when you look around. The food was really good! We had a club sandwich with fries and a steak with a variety of side dishes that you could customize. Everything was served by a self-service robot that drove to our table – with a waiter in tow who then placed the food from the robot onto the table. The robot then automatically returned to the kitchen. A great combination of modern technology and personal service. We also found it very convenient that you could order and pay at your table using a QR code. Everything arrived quickly, and you can pay by card or cash. It was pleasantly quiet, so you could easily have a conversation. The small waiting area with a sofa corner is also particularly nice – really cozy! The restaurant also looks quite impressive from the outside. There's a good selection of dishes for both meat lovers and vegetarians; there's something for everyone. The drinks menu is also excellent. The selection is just right – not too extensive, not too limited – and easy to navigate, making it simple to choose. Free parking is available. The price-performance ratio is excellent. In short: Great atmosphere, delicious food, friendly service – we'll definitely be back!

The restaurant is really very nice. The service was initially very good and friendly. There were four of us, one of whom had a starter, and it makes sense that it was brought later, but then having to wait another hour for the food after eating the starter is pretty harsh. When we made ourselves known, we were initially ignored. When someone finally came, they said the food would be ready. When it finally arrived, everything looked great. Unfortunately, the roast beef with onions was very cold inside. We also mentioned it, after all, it was quite expensive. The waiter reacted very angrily. He simply took the plate with a grumpy face and walked away. No apology, no information. Shortly after, the steak was brought back, and it was delicious. I don't think it's all that bad. I used to work in the service industry myself and know such things can happen, but you should apologize to the guests and not get rude. It's a shame.

We just ate there. We had reserved a table for 12 p.m. There were four of us. We only ordered one starter (onion soup), which arrived after a reasonable wait. It was very tasty and truly exceptional. Not a thin broth, but a nice, thick broth and very aromatic. Unfortunately, after the starter was cleared, we had to wait more than 40 minutes for the main course to arrive. In the meantime, we wanted to ask how long it would take, as some guests who arrived after us had already had their main courses. Unfortunately, the wait staff weren't very attentive and walked past us several times before we finally managed to ask. We also didn't want to shout rudely across the room, and our raised hand was ignored several times. The main courses were all very tasty, but my roast beef with onions was much too cold. I told a waiter that it was cooked to perfection, but unfortunately, it was much too cold. He reacted very rudely, took the plate from under my nose, and simply said he'd pass it on. The waitress who had served us before then came over and asked if everything was okay. We explained to her that we had to wait a very long time and that my meat was unfortunately served almost cold. Instead of simply apologizing, she tried to explain that it was unavoidable because an appetizer was being served. We got the impression that she had ordered our main courses too late, and her explanation made us feel as if she was blaming us because we had ordered an appetizer. In the end, she wanted to compensate us with a free espresso, which we had declined. Well... Mistakes can happen, and you might have to wait longer for your food, but you should handle such a situation professionally and not blame the customer, and certainly not be rude. We won't be visiting this restaurant again, as we definitely expect better service in this price range.

The service was very friendly, gave good advice, and checked in frequently to see if everything was okay. The food was delicious and beautifully presented (a starter for two people), and the main course, a club sandwich and spare ribs, were perfectly seasoned, tender, and very filling. Hmm - Chicago-style hot dog. The name could be apt. The Barrel House's decor reminds me of Culver's in Ludington, Michigan. The location, the music, and the staff are also very similar. The Chicago-style hot dogs could actually come from Chicago. In any case, it all reminded me a lot of my time in Chicago. The decor and music are typically Michigan, and the food fits the city of Chicago - the price, taste, and ambiance are perfect! It almost feels like you're on a road trip around Lake Michigan - except there's no lake nearby...

We were lucky enough to find this American restaurant by chance, and what a great choice it was! From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere transports you directly to the United States: authentic decor, American music, and a cozy atmosphere that invites you to linger. The food is simply spectacular. We tried several items on the menu and everything was delicious: juicy burgers, perfectly cooked ribs, and the sides… next-level! Plus, the portions are generous, and you can tell they use quality ingredients. The staff was very friendly and attentive at all times, and the service was prompt. Definitely a place to return to and recommend. If you like good American food, this restaurant won't disappoint.

A Place We’ve Always Enjoyed – But This Visit Was Let Down by Service We’ve visited Barrel House many times over the years and have always held it in high regard — great food, vibrant atmosphere, and in the past, warm and engaging service. We’ve been away from Ulm for a while, but recently returned for a short trip and were kindly gifted a visit to the Barrel House — which made the experience all the more meaningful. It was also a small wedding celebration, noted both in the reservation and on the voucher. Let’s start with the positives: the food was, as ever, very, very good. Genuinely impressed. The kitchen still delivers at a high standard and the setting remains lovely. So full credit where it’s due. Unfortunately, that’s where the positives end. The service was, quite honestly, next to awful. Not actively rude — just absent. From the moment we arrived, we were simply shown to a table (without any greeting or choice of where to sit, despite a largely empty restaurant), and then largely forgotten. No one came to check on the meal, no one offered a top-up, no one acknowledged the special occasion — in fact, no one really acknowledged us at all. And I’ve lived in Germany off and on for over 20 years, so I’m familiar with local service culture — this went beyond that. This was genuinely disengaged. At one point I found myself sitting with an empty glass for 35 minutes, and eventually had to go looking for someone. We watched other guests walk over to different tables to get cutlery or napkins. It was baffling. There’s now a robotic server system in place, which I imagine was introduced to streamline things. But I’m not sure whether it’s helping or adding to the confusion. At various points, the robot delivered dishes — sometimes waitstaff helped unload it, sometimes the guests just did it themselves. To be perfectly frank, the robot gave a warmer welcome than any of the human staff. Which might be funny if it weren’t so indicative of a larger problem. There were three couples inside and more outside — but enough staff (and robots) to manage. There just didn’t seem to be any structure or flow. No eye contact, no energy, no sense of care. It all felt oddly joyless. Which is such a shame, because the location, concept, and food are still strong. This place used to be dynamic and personable — a real local favourite for us. Now it feels like the staff are just going through the motions. If they can get the service element back on track, it could easily reclaim its former charm. Until then, it’s a frustrating case of excellent food let down by indifferent service. Apologies for the English review — hopefully someone finds it useful. And if the robot happens to read this: you’re doing great, keep it up.

Unfortunately, we had to wait over an hour for our food. The wait was unreasonably long, and the servers seemed confused as to what was going on. The service seemed uncoordinated and uninformed. The food itself was okay, but the organization left a lot to be desired. It's a shame, because the atmosphere was actually quite nice.

This place has a very nice ambiance. A bit noisy outside from the street, but oh well. They want to make as much of the process as possible standardized and automated. For example, you can't just quickly call to see if a table is available. You have to go through the website, but you can't make a reservation for the same day. There's a QR code on the tables that you can use to log in, order, and pay immediately. This worked for me, as I was traveling alone for business. But I can't imagine having a casual group of friends where you might reorder. The food arrives on a serving robot, with a waiter in tow, who then places the food from the robot onto the table. The robot then zips off to the kitchen on its own. Kind of strange, but not bad. The entire living staff was very friendly! The food was really very good. Fresh, hot, and well-seasoned. I found the prices reasonable and normal for the region.

We celebrated our wedding here. From the initial planning to the execution, everything was perfect, and all our requests were met without fuss. Our guests felt very comfortable, the team was super friendly, and the service was first-class. The food is amazing! Keep it up!

The meat was very high quality, cooked to perfection. The food was beautifully presented. However, the price was a bit high. Delicious dessert. Everything was cooked honestly. The value for money was good, but not always feasible for us with seven people. The staff was very friendly.

We went to the BarrelHouse before the basketball game and were absolutely thrilled! The spare ribs are absolutely recommended! Nice and tender, deliciously marinated. The portions were generous, too! The sides were also good, though I would have preferred a more American version of the coleslaw, but it was still delicious.

Quite a nice place. In my opinion, the spare ribs aren't marinated, but simply smothered in sauce, so that's a big minus point because the restaurant claims they're the best in town, which isn't good enough!

Actually a good restaurant, this was our second time there. For our main course, we ordered spare ribs and burgers from the daily specials. Ordering the first drinks and food was quick, the drinks arrived, followed by the appetizer, and soon after, the main courses. The spare ribs were beautifully tender and delicious. Halfway through the burgers, we noticed that the meat patties were still raw inside. We complained and after a while, we were given two new burgers. We also got a free ice cream with fruit for dessert. So far, all good. Although the raw meat patties are a bit embarrassing. After the main course, we were practically ignored. The empty plates sat in front of us for at least 30 minutes without anyone passing by to clear them away. Only after we insisted were they served. The other drinks were also only served when we called out. Conclusion: The spare ribs were delicious, the burgers were too greasy and ours were raw, and the service was incredibly poor. The music is also relatively loud and the fur-covered benches are uncomfortably hard.

It's nicely decorated, but the music volume is too loud for me to hold a conversation. I also waited over an hour for the food I ordered. By that point, my patience had run out: I canceled my food order, paid for the drink, and said goodbye forever.

A brief description of my review: There were 8 of us there on June 5, 2025, at 7:15 p.m. Three people had an appetizer, the rest didn't. We waited a long time before we were even served. The appetizer came relatively quickly, about 25 minutes. We finished the appetizer after about 15 minutes, and another 10 minutes passed before our plates were picked up. Up to this point, 50 minutes had passed since we were seated. Another 35 minutes had passed, and still no food. One of us went ahead and canceled his order and didn't want to wait any longer. When we asked where the food was, we were fobbed off with a "It's very busy today." After another 20 minutes, the food finally arrived. I had the BBQ RIBS with chili cheese spaetzle. As for the food itself, it was delicious, although the BBQ sauce reminded me of McDonald's. But it's their own special sauce. When I asked for compensation, he said no, saying he could give us an espresso or a shot on the house. So, in conclusion: my time is worth exactly one shot to them. P.S. On June 6th, there was a "square dance" (I don't know if it was actually one, but it looked like one). The music was so loud that we had to shout at each other at times, and the table for 8 is so small that eight people can't sit comfortably at it; it's more like a table for 6. All in all, I personally will never go there again.

I posted this review a year ago: "Based on the positive reviews, we visited the BarrelHouse this afternoon and didn't regret it. Extremely friendly service and an excellent baked cod fillet fully met our expectations. The icing on the cake was the homemade ice cream (many Italian ice cream parlors could take inspiration from this for how to make good ice cream). It was our first time there, but certainly not our last... Oh yes - definitely try the homemade wheat beer!" There's nothing to add to that right now in 2025!!! Thank you, dear Barrel House team!

For some, it's "boomer humor" and for me it's in bad taste and no longer up to date My tip is to just stick with the beautiful western decoration and concentrate on the food and service, then I'll be happy to go again

Ambience very good. Unfortunately, the employees were annoyed that we came with a smaller group (2 were missing). With the good crew, the wait of around 1 hour for the food was over quickly. The digital menu was actually unnecessary. I decided on the burger. Unfortunately it didn't say how big the patty was. So that was a surprise. The patty was estimated to be 140g in size. and had to be looked for in the brioche bun.

The food and the place itself are really great; But I have to be honest: Order & Pay doesn't work at all, especially since you can only pay with a credit card or ApplePay. In our case there was only one person who had a credit card and therefore had to take care of the orders all evening. It wasn't a relaxed dinner. We had forgotten a drink - we had to order it afterwards and it only came in the middle of the meal. A service worker would have noticed earlier that something was missing, but the (really nice) waitresses are busy running after the food robots to prevent them from crashing into something. Wouldn't it make more sense if the service staff were used for the actual service??? There wasn't enough dressing on my salad, but since no one ever comes to the table, I couldn't ask anyone... We were there for the 2nd and last time. Only credit card payment was possible outside. Inside we were told we would get the table for 1.5 hours. It was okay, we didn't want to sit for long. After choosing from the very confusing menu, we realized that there was another offer - we were not told beforehand. The starter bread came quickly and was delicious. However, we had to ask for cutlery. And then? Wait... wait... wait... over an hour later the food arrived after another complaint. We wanted to leave without the main course... Finally it happened. Unfortunately it was still cold. Given the prices quoted, we don't want to test it again.

You must visit this restaurant at least once in your life. The facility provides 100% feel-good character. The service staff is very attentive and friendly. The menu is great here you can find everything your heart desires. An American dream come true. The prices are reasonable, but you should be aware beforehand that you will have to spend a few euros more here. Anyone who wants to spend a nice evening in a special atmosphere should go to the Barrel House.

There were a lot of free tables, everything outside was free, we were sent away because apparently there was no more space. There was no food outside, they said, but the people outside had some. The kitchen is also supposed to be at capacity, but whether you want to put up with the waiting time wasn't even asked. The weather forecast had been predicting good weather for days and there was a basketball game across the street. You can really prepare for something like that. It sucks, especially because there aren't any good options in the area. But with the prices being so high, they probably don't need to try too hard.

Because the prices are in the higher segment. While the atmosphere and service are certainly convincing, the price-performance ratio could be a little more balanced. Anyone who is willing to spend a little more for the ambience will still feel comfortable here. Overall, the Barrel House is a good choice for a stylish evening with a pleasant atmosphere. However, if you come mainly for the food and value good value for money, you could easily be disappointed.

Everything is great! From exciting dishes, to super friendly service staff and a very nice ambience 😊 the “vegetarian butcher shop” is particularly worth highlighting!

Very nice location with enough parking spaces. The dining room is decorated in the style of an American noble barn and the service is extremely friendly and fast. The menu does not reveal any culinary classification. From lentils with spaetzle to spare ribs to South Tyrol bacon, everything that was ordered was still of good taste. The price is a bit high, but perfectly fine for the quality.

We had a very relaxed and cozy evening with friends at the Barrel House in Neu-Ulm. Very friendly, attentive service. The spare ribs and my steak were great. In the future, please bring a cleaning cloth with the ribs and a wardrobe would be great. Otherwise everything was great and I would love to come back again.

We were there for the first time, the place is beautiful! Wonderful atmosphere and excellent value for money. The food is really good, especially the ribs and schnitzel which were outstanding! The only thing we can criticize is the price of the starter platter to share: €17.90 per person is too expensive for what is on offer. We recommend including a dish with only salmon and prawns in the starter menu as these were highly appreciated by my husband and brother-in-law. I absolutely recommend the restaurant!
