Bab Al Yemen in München

The overcooked and poorly seasoned food was served in disposable aluminum plates on a plastic tablecloth (see photo). Dessert was also served in a disposable plastic bowl with a plastic spoon. Not exactly a carbon footprint – a point worth mentioning for climate activists. The "waiters" were unprofessional; they didn't clear used napkins with the plates but threw them back into the middle of the table, since everything, including the plastic tablecloth, was thrown away at the end. Water was served in plastic bottles without glasses, and the cutlery was the cheapest tin. I would classify it as a typical fast-food restaurant in Yemen, with all the quirks that are apparently common there. Therefore, it was an interesting experience, but one I personally wouldn't want to repeat. The restrooms and the overall cleanliness were remarkably poor. During our visit (Friday, 6:30-8:00 PM), when the bistro was busy, the back area was sprayed with what appeared to be an insecticide, and the dining area smelled of this chemical. (I recognize this smell from my time in Africa and India.) I consider this restaurant to be very authentic and quite suitable for adventurous individuals looking to broaden their horizons.

The employee is supposed to have a cheerful face and if you ask him for something, he should fulfill it in a nice way. Unfortunately, the service and treatment rating is zero. We hope you will take this observation into consideration because we are fans of Yemeni food. Best regards.

Delicious, satisfying, varied food

First they say "reservations aren't possible," but when we arrive, the table is indeed reserved! Even if the food is delicious, this is frustrating and shows very poor service! But other restaurants cook well too...

Quite a mediocre experience; extremely slow (and slightly inhospitable service), average taste (as per my taste buds), billing issues at the counter, small portion sizes for the price, long line, and above all they were allowing their friends to cut the line which further added to this frustration. Loved the ambience though. All in all, first and last visit here.

A jewel in Munich! Delicious food and drinks, abundant and fresh, good service despite being rush hour. I appreciated that the staff really respected the line. Some smart-ass dude tried to get ahead and he was not allowed. Recommended 100%!

Very authentic place with great food

Terrible service and complete lack of honesty. I called 5 hours before arriving and was clearly told that this restaurant does not take reservations. When I showed up, the staff told us to wait for a specific table and promised we could take it once the guests finished. We waited over one full hour. As soon as the table became free, they suddenly changed the story and claimed it was “reserved” for a large group. This is either blatant lying or total incompetence, either way it shows zero respect for customers and their time. أهل اليمن بريئين من امثالكم

The food was passable, but the fire-cooked lamb was very good. The waiters were a bit pushy and rushed us to leave, which was a shame.

Extremely disrespectful service. I've repeatedly experienced white guests who arrived after me being served first, while I was ignored. I've encountered this discriminatory behavior over 20 times here. Such treatment is unacceptable. If you're African, don't go there.

The food tastes good. But that's where the positives end. The place is dirty and run-down, and the staff aren't particularly welcoming. What really struck me, though, was that in a Yemeni restaurant there were more Yemeni flags than Palestinian ones – apparently, their own country, destroyed for years, has become boring. It seems you can still set priorities even when your own country is embroiled in a perpetual war. One has to wonder if the owners are even using their brains – real Yemenis would hardly have any sympathy for Islamists. And when politics is being played so demonstratively, it remains unclear what the owners actually stand for – and whether the money is really only being used for food or perhaps ending up in entirely different hands.

We visited Bab Al Yemen on a busy night and the place was packed, which is always a good sign! Despite the crowd, we were lucky enough to find a table right away. I was impressed by how quickly the food arrived, and it was absolutely delicious. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. Definitely a must-visit in Munich for authentic Yemeni cuisine!

The food was honestly good. However, the bathrooms weren't clean. If you could clean the sinks, toilets, and walls with appropriate products like vinegar, etc.

SCAM. UPDATE! The restaurant had my review deleted, claiming defamation. What dishonorable, pathetic, and greedy people run this canteen—shame on you! So be sure to keep your bill—if you even go there. Despite my explicit request, the waiter brought water—and then charged me for it: 3 euros for 200ml of tap water. Outrageous! Actually, according to Section 241a of the German Civil Code (BGB), I wasn't even entitled to payment. The food—taste-wise, it was okay at best. The tabbouleh, which cost 8 euros (!!), contained 5 lemon seeds. A terrible restaurant—AVOID IT AT ALL COSTS!

The food was very good, especially the meat. However, the rice was cold. I requested a small mandi rice dish for a child, but it wasn't available (only rice).

However, sitting at a roadside table is fine; enjoy the rustic atmosphere created by plastic sheeting. If you're particular about ambiance, this might not be for you. Based on recommendations, I ordered the Fahsah stone pot beef with freshly baked Moulawah flatbread – highly recommended! 🥘The stone pot beef arrived still bubbling, creating a lively atmosphere. Even after eating for a while, there was still a large pot of meat left. A must-try for meat lovers! The beef is mostly lean, stewed until very tender, and the Asian flavors definitely suited my taste better. Dipping the flatbread in the broth was incredibly satisfying. It's better to go with a group so you can try more different dishes.

Very delicious food, but we were asked to leave after 30 minutes because of a reservation as the staff member has stated. I cannot confirm if he was right. If that is correct, I would recommend to be respectful and tell customers in advance if their table is really reserved. When we were leaving there were empty places already. What a disappointment!

Very friendly and welcoming service. The food is absolutely delicious! The lamb is tender, and the portions are generous enough for even the hungriest of us. Freshly baked flatbread is served with the meal, allowing you to eat in the traditional way. The milk tea is truly outstanding. I had one before and one after the meal. It was beautifully flavored with cardamom and perfectly sweetened. The menu also offers a "whole lamb" option :-) We didn't order it, though, as there were only two of us.

Good food, quick service. We ordered two breads, a rice with chicken and a lamb topf. Everything was very good. This was enough food for three people. The only thing was they were out of sawarq (this green dip) which we ordered and gave us the red one instead but without telling us, so we were a bit confused. But it's really no big deal. For smaller desserts they have some options in the fridge. I enjoyed this peanut almond square dessert (do not know the name) immensely.

Simple, good prices, very tasty and authentic

The restaurant is centrally located in the city center, right next to the main train station, and the service is excellent, although reservations are sometimes advisable. Eighty percent of the dishes contain rice, so those with allergies should be aware of this. I personally enjoyed the beef dishes the most, but the salads are overpriced for what they offer. The mixed salad, for example, consists only of tomatoes and parsley and doesn't justify the €15 price tag. The organic drinks are also very good, but a bit pricey as well. In conclusion, I can recommend the restaurant and advise the owners to address their shortcomings.

Fresh, authentic Yemeni food. Very good and fast service. Can be very loud and crowded.

Yemeni cuisine is a fusion of African, Middle Eastern, and Indian Ocean coastal flavors in Arabic food. The restaurant's ambiance and decor reflect this style, something we East Asians don't often have the opportunity to experience. We tried dishes 47 and 48 (mildly spicy). The flatbread is an extra charge (2 euros per piece), and one piece is enough for two people. We recommend adding Yemeni tea, which costs 2 euros per cup; adding milk is an additional 1 euro.

We stumbled upon this restaurant by chance, and what can I say… it was absolutely perfect and like a mini-vacation 😃 Bab Al Yemen offers authentic Yemeni cuisine right in the heart of Munich. Dishes like Mandi and Haneeth are aromatic, freshly prepared, and the portions are perfectly adequate – you really get a taste of the Orient on your plate. The homemade flatbread and the cardamom tea are especially recommended. The ambiance is rather simple and functional, the service friendly, but sometimes a bit disorganized when the restaurant is full. However, this isn't a problem at all; in fact, it adds to the authentic experience. They don't serve alcohol, but they do offer traditional drinks. Vegetarian options are available, though limited. Overall, a highly recommended restaurant for anyone who wants to try genuine Yemeni cuisine. One more thing we'd like to add… We read some reviews that were very negative regarding cleanliness and service. We were treated incredibly well, even though the place was packed. If some people didn't experience the same level of service, they should probably take a good look at themselves. You reap what you sow... you know the saying 😜. As for cleanliness – well, it can look a bit messy on the tables sometimes, but that's a different dining culture, and there are very few Europeans there. This might rub some German obsessive-compulsive cleanliness fanatics the wrong way, and I hope those people just stay home and don't travel. They'll never be happy 😃. The place is incredibly authentic as it is, and that's a good thing. They even have a traditional corner (a separate room in the back) for prayers. It doesn't get more honest and authentic than that. So ignore those negative reviews and treat yourself to a wonderful, genuine atmosphere and delicious food.

A very welcoming cuisine, unlike anything I'd experienced before. Lacking knowledge of Yemeni food, the various dishes reminded me of Lebanese, Moroccan, or even Mauritian cuisine. In any case, the food was truly delicious and well-presented. The atmosphere was pleasant; cutlery was provided, but you could also eat with your fingers.

The portions were quite big too, we almost couldn’t finish it. The place has a nice cozy vibe and feels pretty authentic. Overall we really enjoyed it and I’d totally come again next time I’m around.

I ordered a meat madfoon and a chicken madghout. The madfoon was delicious, but the madghout was absolutely amazing. It's definitely worth a visit, and I'll definitely repeat the experience every time I go to Munich. The staff are respectful, and the service is fast. Halal Restaurant A true Yemeni restaurant. All the guys are Yemeni, and they speak Arabic, giving you a taste of a traditional restaurant in Saudi Arabia, for example. Greetings, your brother from Egypt.

Tabbouleh is served with lemon seeds. A disgrace. Hygiene is abysmally poor. Avoid this restaurant.

I tried the shakshouka breakfast, which was very average, but the beans were very delicious. The atmosphere of the restaurant is somewhat disturbing.

Very disappointing. We had to wait over an hour for our food. Then the waiter came and told us that the person who made the bread was sick – honestly, I was just as confused as you probably are reading this. After all that waiting, the food finally arrived, but the entire experience left a very poor impression. Definitely not what you'd expect from a restaurant visit.

Delicious but the meat is very little

Hello everyone, The restaurant serves excellent and authentic Yemeni food, and we truly appreciate that. However, our experience was disappointing due to a serious lack of respect. One of the waiters treated us in a rude and discriminatory way — both in his tone and attitude while serving, as if we were not worthy of basic courtesy. We ordered our lunch and paid €148, but were still treated with disrespect. Even the cashier did not show proper manners. We have always recommended this restaurant to people from different nationalities — at work and beyond — to introduce them to our culture and Yemeni cuisine, something we are very proud of. Sadly, after this unpleasant experience, which I would not wish for anyone, we have decided to look for other places. I sincerely hope the management improves the behavior of their staff, because respect is a treasure — once it’s lost, everything else loses its value.

The restrooms are a disgrace.

Rude staff who keep on staring inappropriately on both young women and us (same sex couple) and we tried to speak in German and English and we were laughed at. While waiting, you can see what’s going on in the kitchen and it was very unhygienic and unclean (sneezing and touching the food without washing). Someone should call and inform the Ordungsamt about this place. We left after 10 minutes of being ignored and pushed around.
