It was our first time there and it was a really great evening. Delicious food and very warm, funny staff. Putting guests together at tables is simply a great idea. This is how you start a conversation and have a great evening. Food & wine were really great! We will definitely come back because we felt absolutely comfortable.

We had dinner there with two friends on Saturday evening. The staff is really nice, but you can forget the boss and the food. Especially when guests go with dogs, or rather with Chihuahuas, they are really treated. The food also leaves a lot to be desired. A child can cook better there.

Decent good restaurant with traditional regional cuisine. It's a nice rustic atmosphere. The service is good and they put a lot of effort into the guests.

Edit August 2, 2024: *I take my role as a local guide very seriously and have the goal of creating fair reviews that provide both Mainz residents and visitors to Mainz with a good overview and thus offer them the opportunity to have a pleasant stay enjoy. Since my short review lacks meaningfulness, I have taken the trouble to go into more detail at the owner's request.* "I recently had dinner with friends at the wine bar "Am Holztor" and unfortunately our experience was anything but satisfactory. First of all, the food didn't taste good at all. The Holztor Schnitzel I ordered was still raw inside, which is not only unappetizing but also a health risk. The ambience of the pub was also disappointing. There was a constant smell of smoke, which was very unpleasant for us as non-smokers. According to the German Non-Smoking Protection Act, smoking is prohibited indoors in catering establishments in order to protect the health of guests. According to the neighboring residents, it often gets very loud late at night (after 10 p.m.), which significantly disrupts the night's sleep. According to the regulations of the Federal Immission Control Ordinance (BImSchV), quiet hours should be observed in residential areas from 10 p.m. in order to protect residents from noise pollution. To make matters worse, both the owner and the waiter appeared to be in a very unpleasant state towards a later hour. Unfortunately, due to Google guidelines, we cannot go into detail. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend the “Am Holztor” wine tavern and hope that these problems will change soon.”

Dieses kleine urige Restaurant ist einfach toll! Ich kann es wirklich nur jedem ans Herz legen der dort in der Nähe ist. Das Essen war super lecker. Und der Service war einfach unschlagbar. Ich wurde noch nie so herzlich bedient. Einfach so so herzliche Menschen die dort arbeiten!! Danke dafür!

Nice and very friendly service.

The best place in Mainz hand down. Best food. Small menu. Best staff. Awesome old city decor. Can’t stress how awesome and nice the staff is here. All around good people. The great grandfather of the current building owner opened this place up in 1885. Think about that you little squirrel brain, this is old money , old history. Glad this place didn’t get leveled due to poor leadership in the 1930’s and 1940’s. We out here once again. Best spot. Best reviewer.

Very friendly staff. Knowing we’re not from Germany, he explained how the dish “Meenzer Handkäs mit Musik“ got its name, and we had a good laugh. Our 2-year-old daughter’s drink was served with a straw without being asked. All the dishes we ordered were very delicious. Generous portion. Warm and relaxing atmosphere. It was exactly what we were looking for. If we ever make a trip back to Mainz, we definitely will come here again.

This wine bar is a quaint insider tip that offers traditional, delicious German cuisine at its best. Run by four extremely nice and committed people, this charming restaurant has a particularly welcoming atmosphere. The restaurant is somewhat hidden near the Rhine. The interior impresses with its rustic charm with wooden beams, cozy corners and lovingly decorated tables that immediately give guests the feeling of being at home. The professional wine recommendation deserves a special mention. Whether a sparkling Riesling for a starter or a strong Pinot Noir for the main course – you will get good advice here. The four operators, who run the restaurant with heart and soul, not only ensure everything runs smoothly, but also provide particularly warm hospitality.

We were here with a few people a few days ago because of the very good reviews and were unfortunately disappointed. We all found the prices to be too exorbitant for the portion sizes. What stood out was the friendliness of the two hosts. Both are very talkative and very warm, but we expected something different from the food. The salad dressing was advertised to us as homemade and delicious, but it tasted just like Kühne yogurt dressing. I think that's a real shame because salad dressings are so easy and delicious to make. My rump steak was very tasty in terms of meat and medium rare, but the price is too high. We would still come back again with the Schlemmerblock.

Urig gemütliches Restaurant mit großer Weinkarte und leckeren bodenständigen Speisen. Nur wenig Tische, daher unbedingt reservieren. Zuvorkommender Service, hat alles gepasst und wir hatten viel Spaß. Jederzeit wieder.

Easily the best meal we had this week while staying in Mainz and visiting towns up and down the Rhine. I had the mushroom schnitzel and my husband had the pepper schnitzel. Both were delicious! The place itself is cozy and feels very authentic. Service was extremely friendly- if we’re lucky enough to make it back to Mainz in the future, we will absolutely return for a delicious meal!

Yesterday I went to the “Am Holztor” wine bar for the first time and was really impressed. In my opinion the best “Meenzer Handkäs with music” in all of Mainz, delicious food and very friendly service. I will gladly come again.

When it comes to a classic, I have a different standard...the schnitzel was average at best, but the price wasn't.

Very nice service from one employee or owner. You immediately felt like a regular guest. Unfortunately the schnitzel was only mediocre. As I was leaving the restaurant, the other employee pushed me so hard that I almost fell over. Absolute no go. Unfortunately, I probably won't go here again. Maybe the owners/servants should coordinate. What one person leaves a positive impression, the other unfortunately ruins with his pushing. Very unfortunate.

Ein uriges kleines Lokal mit bodenständiger, guter Küche, einer umfangreichen Weinkarte und sehr freundlichem Service. Wir bekamen Platz an einem großen Tisch und fanden es schön, dass andere Gäste dazu kamen, es entstanden nette Gespräche. Unser kleiner Hund war willkommen und wurde vom Chef noch persönlich begrüßt :-) Reservierung ist empfehlenswert. Wir kommen auf jeden Fall gerne wieder !

Das Lokal war gut besucht, das Ambiente in die Jahre gekommen aber trotzdem sehr gemütlich, die Preise für ein Schnitzel mit Pommes ohne Salat 17.90 Euro, was mittlerweile normal ist......aber das Schnitzel (Rohgewicht keine 150 gr) dass wir bekommen haben, ist mit Abstand das kleinste Schnitzel, das ich je gesehen habe...beim Bezahlen hieß es dann, wir hätten es sofort bemängeln müssen.....aber ich hätte mich als Wirt nicht getraut das Minischnitzel für 17.90 Euro meinen Gästen vorzusetzen....ich musste auf dem Heimweg lachen....

Wirklich klasse Essen (frische Küche merkt man schon deshalb, weil man Schnitzel mit oder ohne Panade bestellen kann, also kein TK), die Weinauswahl ist beeindruckend und der Service ist so gut und hat Weinkenntnis wie ich sie noch nie erlebt habe! Das ist ein absoluter Volltreffer und kann man nur empfehlen!

Wunderschönes kleines Weinstüble, dass offensichtlich mit Herz geführt wird und immer eine gastfreundliche Atmosphäre bietet. Hier gibt es auch kleiner Portionen für Renter und einen Obolus zum Parken. Allerdings muss man sagen, dass es besser ist, hier zu Fuß herzukommen (die Parkplätze ja eigentlich für die Anwohner gedacht). Aber alles in allem eine ganz klare Empfehlung!

War gestern spontan das 1. Mal dort. Klein, Uhrig aber gemütlich, Service freundlich und zuvorkommend, Mein Steak mit Bratkartoffeln und kleinem Beilagen Salat war sehr gut....Preis/Leistung ein Ticken übers Ziel aber auch die Gastro muss Leben.

Das Essen und der Service im Lokal ist gut und zu empfehlen. Der Preis zum Beispiel für ein Rumpsteak mit Beilage und Salat von ca. 31 Euro ist ebenfalls angemessen. Zu bemängeln sind aus meiner Sicht aber folgende Punkte im Ablauf: Wir hatten für eine größere Gruppe gebucht. Um nochmal final die Teilnehmer abzustimmen hatte ich das Lokal kurz vorher per E-Mail kontaktiert. In der Antwort wurde ich darauf hingewiesen, dass ein fehlender Teilnehmer mit EUR 25,00 berechnet werden würde. Nachdem ich reklamiert habe, dass davon bei der ursprünglichen Reservierung keine Rede war wurde die Aussage zurückgezogen. Soweit so gut. Für das Trinkgeld standen bei Kartenzahlung vier Buttons zur Auswahl. Es gab 10%, 15% und 20% und kein Trinkgeld. Ein Button das Trinkgeld frei zu bestimmen gab es nicht und wurde auch nicht angeboten. Ich finde es muss dem Gast überlassen bleiben wieviel Trinkgeld jemand gibt. Für mich ein klares No-Go jemanden das Trinkgeld mehr oder weniger vorzuschreiben . Ebenfalls ist zu differenzieren auf welche Rechnungssumme Trinkgeld gegeben wird, reden wir hier über eine Rechnung von EUR 40,00 oder EUR 500,00. Ebenfalls wurde die Rechnung nicht wie versprochen per E-Mail versendet. Von daher komme ich zu folgender Bewertung: Für das Essen gebe ich 4 Sterne für das drumherum ziehe ich 2 Sterne ab. Für mich hat das drum herum einen schönen Abend ins Negative verkehrt. Von daher in Summe 2 Sterne.

Gemütlich uriges Ambiente mit dem gewissen Charme :) Übersichtliche Abendkarte und das sagt im positiven Sinne schon alles. Jeder ist mit Herz und Leidenschaft bei der Sache und Gastfreundschaft wird hier groß geschrieben! Wir kommen auf jeden fall wieder. Kleiner Geheimtipp für den gemütlich geselligen Abendausklang :)

Wir lieben diese Weinstube...hauptsächlich auch wegen dem Chef, der unser Freund geworden ist und seinen Mitarbeitern, die alle super sympathisch sind. Ich liebe das beste Hähnchen von Mainz, das es da gibt :-) und es gibt edle Tropfen Wein und sogar Meenzer Muttersche ;-) Prost! Wenn wir Lust auf einen schönen, gemütlichen, fröhlichen Abend haben, gehen wir zu Jörni und seiner Crew!

Wie wurden sehr freundlich empfangen und ins Lokal an den für uns reservierten Tisch geführt. Auf unsere Frage eventuell einen Platz auf der Terrasse zu bekommen, kam man ,als dort Plätze frei wurden sofort nach. Die Speisen waren durchweg lecker. Die Weinkarte enthielt eine große Auswahl bereit, so dass jedem Geschmack entsprochen werden konnte. Der Service ließ keine Wünsche offen und wir haben uns dort sehr wohl gefühlt. Das Ambiente ist einem Weinlokal voll gerecht geworden, urig und gemütlich.

Urige Meenzer Kneipe mit Niveau

Jedes Mal, wenn wir in Mainz sind versuchen wir einen Tisch im Holztor zu ergattern. Dominic ist der absolute Knüller. Ich habe selten einen besseren Gastgeber kennengelernt. Er lebt die Gastfreundschaft des Lokals und überzeugt mit Fachwissen und Freundlichkeit. Immer wieder gerne!

Ich mache es kurz. Das Essen, sehr lecker. Der Wein, hervorragend. Das Highlight ist die Atmosphäre. Entspannt, heimisch, ultra freundlich, ab der ersten Minute fühlt man sich willkommen. Genau das, was man sich von einer Weinstube in Mainz erhofft!

Was für eine tolle Überraschung und Entdeckung, nachdem wir in einer sog. "Weinbar" direkt zuvor abgewiesen worden waren am Samstag Abend um 21.30 Uhr ("Letzte Runde schon durch"). Dafür "Am Holztor": Köstlicher Wein, ein bezauberndes Personal, das herzlich und einladend auf die Gäste zukommt. Das Ambiente ist rustikal, aber stimmig. Ja, hier kommen wir sehr gerne wieder hin!

Wir hatten am Freitag einen tollen und unvergesslichen Abend mit den Gastgebern.. Da ich kein Schnaps trinken durfte, da ich Auto fahren musste, habe ich Ihn ToGo bekommen 🤣 Wenn wir wieder Mal in Mainz sind kommen wir ganz sicher wieder.

Super Service, ausgefallenes Essen und tolles lockeres Ambiente

Essen 4 Sterne, Preise relativ hoch; normalerweise ist bei knapp 18€ für ein Schnitzel der Beilagensalat dabei. Knapp 23 Euro mit Salat sind schon ziemlich happig. Service/Personal/Freundlichkeit 5 Sterne. Die Schnitzel waren mir etwas zu.. kompakt paniert (Panade war eher nass und schwer als knusprig und leicht).. Ansich waren sie aber lecker. Die Bratkartoffeln könnten von der Portion ein Tick mehr sein und Vorallem mit Zwiebeln/Speck sein, so fehlt ihnen leider einfach der richtige Bratkartoffel Geschmack.. ansonsten hatten wir einen schönen Abend und der Service war sehr nett und aufmerksam. Wenn wir in der Nähe sind würden wir wieder kommen.

My grandma in heaven will not be happy to hear this but I have to say that NICOLE - the Chefcook at AM HOLZTOR prepares the VERY best fried potatoes on this planet! My wife and me have had dinner at AM HOLZTOR for at least 10 times by now. I always have the same dish: Steak, medium with fried potatoes (not fries!) with a glass of red wine. Glücklicherweise hatten wir reserviert. Die Weinstube ist recht klein, aber sehr gemütlich. Auffallend war die Freundlichkeit der Bedienung. Die Karte bietet für jeden etwas, die Weinauswahl ist ebenfalls prima. Es war ein warmer Tag, deshalb war ich froh, daß in dieser Weinstube auch Bier vom Faß erhältlich ist. Die Portionen sind okay, die Speisen wohlschmeckend. Ganz besonders toll war aber hier der Service.

Enjoyed visit about 6 years ago so we reserved again. Good decision to make reservation as every table was taken and when occupants left table, a reserved sign was placed on table. Only a few tables. Service and food excellent. Located near Rhine in a residential area. The other patrons spoke German so restaurant is popular with the locals. Reasonably priced.

I searched for an authentic German restaurant to visit on my trip and this did not disappoint. The front of house was very well organised, friendly and helpful. We had two dishes that I’ve never eaten or even seen on a menu before and they were fantastic. I must say how much I enjoyed the home made curd cheese but will say no more than that so hopefully people can experience it the way we did on a finding out mission

Zuerst einmal muss ich den Herrn im Service loben,der mit unaufgesetzter Herzlichkeit bedient.Die Weine sind sehr lecker und gut ausgewählt,endlich Mal auch jemand der zu den Weinen etwas sagen kann! Das Schnitzel hätte ich mir frisch geklopft und etwas dicker vorgestellt..Die Panade war ok,die Sauce etwas undurchsichtig.0b es jetzt ein vorfertigtes Schnitzel war, weiß ich nicht. Auf jeden Fall ist es ein gemütliches Lokal.Ich war vor 30 Jahren das letzte Mal dort,als es noch eher eine Bierkneipe war. Nochmal hingehen,was anderes ausprobieren. Danke!!

This was a very nice and cozy restaurant a block away from the Rhine, and a five minute walk from old town Mainz. It occupies a building that has housed a restaurant since the 19th century, according to the menu. I had gone here the night before hoping to have a nice dinner after attending a Mainz 05 match, but the kitchen was closed before I got there. It was still crowded with tables that were finishing up their dinners though, the menu was interesting, and the owners were friendly, so I made a reservation for the next day. Drinks: They have four beers on tap and some spirits, but the highlight for me was an interesting wine list of local producers, with varietals that may be less familiar to travelers from the US (such as myself). One of the proprietors, Dominic, was very helpful and knowledgeable with the offerings and pointed to one white (a dry Riesling) and one red (St. Laurent and Dunkelfelder, which I’d never had before). The red had an intense color (from the Dunkelfelder) but a medium body, with similar notes to a Cabernet Franc although the St. Laurent supposedly has its origin in Pinot Noir. Both wines were tasty and reasonably priced to me at least (under 7EUR for a .2L pour). Food: Not too overwhelming a menu, with a bent towards home style cooking. They had various schnitzels (with various seasoning options, plain, mushroom sauce and peppercorn sauce among others) and fried chicken (more like a roasted chicken without the batter typical of American places, FWIW. Looked good though.) I ordered the rumpsteak with peppercorn sauce and roasted potatoes, and a side salad. The salad was refreshing and the portion of food was generous, with the steak cooked a perfect medium rare. The potatoes were a real standout too. The customers looked to be mostly local, as they seemed friendly with the owners. The previous night there was a table of English speakers, so they are very accommodating in that regard as well. The crowd skewed a bit older but the atmosphere was convivial. The owners were warm and friendly, and certainly deserving of these positive reviews. I’d recommend making a reservation, and recommend coming here if you are in Mainz.

We were lucky to reserve a table as it being the high season and we were not disappointed. Service was hospitable and the food/drink were excellent. You will not be disappointed but to assure your table book in advance. We were seated outside and from the locals that were here having a great night out made our evening that more enjoyable.

This is a small, cosy neighbourhood restaurant and wine bar. We were given a friendly greeting, our orders were taken promptly and the drinks arrived quickly. There was a slight wait for the food but it was well worth the wait. We had a pork schnitzel with mushroom sauce, fried potatoes and a side salad and a turkey schnitzel with fried potatoes. Both meals were absolutely delicious. With two large beers and an apple juice our bill was €47.80, which was very good value. There was a really nice friendly atmosphere as well.

We ended up in mainz as a stopover on our return journey from Slovenia to Belgium. We found this restaurant on tripadvisor. We were very pleased with the meal. The service is very friendly. The restaurant is very nicely situated in a residential street. Close to the river. Are you in Mainz? Then definitely go to this restaurant!

Very friendly waiting staff. Good food off a menu that was not overly extensive. Excellent choice of wines. Only two dessert choices, one of which was no longer available but the replacement was super. And not too expensive! Bit out of the town centre, close to the river, so you won't happen across this. Very busy outside in particular so would suggest booking.

It is a small restaurant, but food is fresh and delicious. I had the Turkey Schnitzel with pepper sauce and it was wonderful and under 15 Euros. The menu is not huge, but there is a nice variety. The staff is great and happy to have you as a customer.

Got takeaway from Am Holtzer last night. Nice people and excellent food. Got the schnitzel with peppercorn sauce and a side salad. More food than I could eat. Three minute walk from the Hyatt. Looking forward to when Germany opens up and have a fresh draft there.

Very cozy German restaurant. You feel you are eating in a local restaurant with other German. Food presentation is simple but very tasty. If you want to have a different experience while in Mainz I recommend to visit once this restaurant. I ordered "Puten-Champignon-Rahm Schintzel" for about 14 euro and it was delicious and tasty. For the red wine I got what they recommended (5.00 euro a glass) and I was surprised with German wine. It was really good.

The staff are very nice and patients With visitors . The restaurant is nice and small. The prices are reasonable. So far it is the best schnitzel in Mainz.

If you're looking for the real German/Bavarian home cooking experience, this is the right place for you! It is a classical restaurant with a realtively simple menu of German classics such as schnitzel, hackse and knödel. We came here during hte Octoberfest season and it was quite hard to find a vegatarian option, which was a bit disappointing. However, I must say that their service was very friendly and they ended up preparing something off the menu for us that tasted quite nice!

Just one block away from the Hyatt and the river bank this traditional German restaurant caters to both locals and visitors. Very friendly service and excellent local food and wine. We’ll return without a doubt!

Eat here whenever we can when in Mainz, very convenient if staying at the Hyatt Hotel, it’s two minutes walk. Never been disappointed when eating here. Excellent Menu, good wines, very friendly service. Looking forward to the next visit. HIGHLY RECOMMEND

We have eaten here many times before. It’s our favourite restaurant when we’re in Mainz. The staff are super friendly, food cooked to perfection. Wines and beers good. What more could you want. It’s clearly popular with locals so booking is recommended. We’ll be back!

Always try and eat here whenever staying at the Hyatt, a very short walk from the hotel, great service, good menu, stunning food, authentic atmosphere. If you miss it, it’s your loss!! Highly recommended
