Alt Bentheim in Bad Bentheim

Met een groep van acht personen waren we om 1630 niet welkom voor een drankje en een snack. Plek zat maar alleen als we ook bleven dineren. Bizar, nog nooit zoiets meegemaakt

We arrive at 5 p.m. The restaurant is open and there is 1 couple eating on the terrace. We want to step inside. It's full of staff. The man inside asks if we have a reservation and I say no. Then he shakes his head no and we can continue...

The manager was very friendly, the atmosphere in the hotel was wonderfully homely, and the breakfast and dinner were great compliments to the chef, this hotel is highly recommended for everyone, you can enjoy cycling, walking and Bad Bentheim is a nice town .

We wanted to have a nice drink on the terrace. We had seen the sign that you can only pay by card from 20 euros. You had to wait before you were allowed onto the terrace. The owner(?) greeted us from the open door. We walked to a free table. The terrace was almost empty, 2 tables were occupied. We ordered drinks and pastries. When this had just been delivered, the owner came and said that payment had to be made immediately because the terrace was about to close. So I took out my bank card to pay. I was told very firmly that I had to pay in cash because the amount was under 20 euros. We said that we might want to order later and that it would cost more than 20 euros. We then had to go to the debit card later and then pay in cash. We were told that even if we could not read, we knew that it was not possible to pay for less than 20 by debit card. According to them, there was already a waiter and waitress (manager, manager?) standing near us, raising their voices because we were said to be terribly rude, we responded in the same way out of pure indignation. According to them, we were also terribly rude to just walk onto the terrace without permission. The waitress greeted us at the entrance. We assumed that this was enough to walk onto the almost empty terrace. The police were threatened and said that this is not a problem as far as we are concerned. Eventually another waitress came and we were able to pay by card. At first the bill was wrong. That was corrected and then pinned. We have never eaten a pastry and drank our drink so quickly! Get out of here quickly! We live close to the border and come here almost every month. But we have never experienced this before. Where can German hospitality be found at this company? They won't see us again at this restaurant.

Careful when you post any criticism on this place. They will get litigious to remove negative reviews. Scary stuff.

Good restaurants accept criticism from customers in order to improve. And don't mark it as "slander" to delete. - That's a really stupid idea these days!

Ga hier niet naar toe. Tenzij je uiterst onvriendelijk wil worden bejegend. Dit is mij ( met 50 jaar horeca ervaring) nog nooit overkomen. Een leeg terras en de toegang geweigerd.

Terrace empty after enough. We wanted to have a drink, which was allowed, in the back corner! Bad service!

Visited Bad Bentheim in the first weekend of September 2024. We wanted to have lunch here with family around 12:30, but we were not welcome even though there were only 2 tables occupied!!! It was 'too busy'. We reacted indignantly and were told that they do not do 'groups', indicating that we are a family (6 adults and 3 children). Eventually the monkey got out of hand, we were not welcome because we are Dutch. We advise all Dutch people to avoid this case. Strange turn of events.

Were not welcome even though there is plenty of room on the terrace. Company was a family of 8 adults. Very special.

When the terrace was empty, it was understood in a German-unfriendly manner that we were not welcome. No Dutch people wanted here, not even a decent family with children. It is incomprehensible that this still exists.

2 people in service, the waitress says at the waiting point in the beer garden "my colleague is coming soon" - 5 tables were occupied by then (1.30 p.m.). A waiter then came to us from the restaurant and asked if we wanted to eat, which we said no because we just wanted something to drink. The statement from the service was that he would then have no place, only for coffee and cake or lunch! We then left... something so unfriendly hasn't happened to me in a long time! I work in service myself, if I had that kind of experience with our guests, I could go. To me the business behavior makes it seem like you don't need it!!! Well then, all the best, definitely permanently without us!

Were there today on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and wanted something to drink, even though only about 15% of the tables were occupied. They said that if nothing was eaten there would be no table. We then went to Ferdinands, great service there. Alt Bentheim the tables were still free, I wish the owners good luck, I won't go there if I want something to eat. There are days when all I want is something to drink, and if I'm not welcome then I don't want it with dinner either.

Beautiful hotel, nice and clean rooms, nice hard beds, cooling, delicious lunch, nice place in the old center of Bremen. Not cheap!

We were very unfriendly informed that we were not welcome to have a drink. (We had cycled 40km and wanted to order 2 half liters) Only if you also come to eat! 3pm in the afternoon!!! To which I politely replied that we had already eaten at 3 p.m., after which the waiter turned his back on us. And now this donkey has hit the same stone for the second time. Last time we were overwhelmed and ordered something even without being hungry. So no, we will never eat here again and no, we will not eat here with the whole family. It doesn't work that way. I took the time to take a photo of the waiter and you can see that there was more than enough room left. Beforehand, we had received a not-too-friendly response from a woman when we asked if we could choose a seat or had to wait. Since there was so much space left, the question… (By the way, down the stairs there is an apparently new drinking establishment with super friendly service, we discovered) In short, I will never be able to judge the quality of food because this is not going to happen. About friendliness I can only give a big, fat unsatisfactory rating. While I normally only post a review if we are very satisfied.

15u middag. 40km gefietst en op dit tijdstip hebben we al gegeten. Zeer onvriendelijk werd ons gezegd dat we daar alleen maar mogen zitten als we ook eten bestellen. 15u ‘s middags. Voelde me zeer slecht behandeld !!!! Trap af naar beneden naar Blixx em Bernard zijn we zeer vriendelijk geholpen. Het is zelfs de 2e x dat zo’n onvriendelijk ontvangst ons overkomt bij alt bentheim. Een ezel stoot zich geen 2x aan dezelfde steen zeggen ze dan. Nou wij helaas wel. Maar er komt nooit een derde en hoop met dit bericht anderen te waarschuwen voor hun zeer onvriendelijke gedrag!!! Rarely have I experienced such unfriendly staff! We initially just wanted to have a drink with four people in the afternoon (around 3:30 p.m.). We were turned away because there were only tables available for eating. There were plenty of free tables!

Good restaurant, nice to sit there. Delicious food with well-filled plates. Real value for money. Definitely recommended!

Unfortunately we were unable to have a drink. The terrace was almost empty and we were initially welcomed, but as soon as we indicated that we only wanted something to drink, there was no longer a seat available. Strange turn of events for a "cafe" restaurant.

Unfortunately...only one star 🤷‍♀️ You are greeted in a friendly manner, the atmosphere was ok, the food looked good... I would have liked to order something, but unfortunately that wasn't possible. As an individual, I sat at a table and waited and waited and waited...nothing happened. No, it wasn't very busy and the four employees even had time to chat and welcome the next guests. They were immediately provided with menus, while I as an individual was completely ignored. As I was leaving (without ordering, since no one had noticed me yet) I said goodbye to the employee who greeted me. There was no further reaction from her after saying “bye”... It's a shame, something like that.

Enjoyed a simple meal with two children. All plates empty, so that's the best review :) You can pay by card from 20 euros.

At 7:10 p.m. we were turned away even though it was open until 8:30 p.m. and not only us but another 15 people (customers) were no longer served. We then went up to Ferdinand's, the hut was full, but we were still warmly welcomed and served.

Small schnitzel, a salad, one chicken nuggets from the children's menu, and something to drink, 70 euros. Price-quality ratio is simply not good. I also asked for a glass of water for the little one, but I only came to buy a much too expensive bottle.

Ein Stern, weil es nicht anders geht! Wir wollten am Sonntag, 18.03.2023, etwas im Biergarten essen und trinken. Wir kamen von der Burg und sahen von oben, dass auch noch ein Tisch direkt an der Treppe im Garten frei war. Leider mussten wir feststellen, dass der direkte Zugang vom Plateau zum Biergarten mittels Band abgesperrt war. Da jedoch der Tisch direkt dahinter war, wir einen älteren, geheingeschränkten Hund dabei hatten, wollten wir keinen unnötigen Weg gehen. Zu dieser eigenmächtigen Amtsanmaßung des widerrechtlichen Betretens kam es jedoch erst gar nicht. Lautstark wurden wir vor anderen Gästen von einer Mitarbeiterin darauf hingewiesen:“ Das ist eine Absperrung, gehen sie bitte oben lang!“ Selbst auf meinen Einwand, dass es ein weiter Umweg sei (mit Zeig auf den Hund) und der Tisch ja direkt hinter dem Absperrband wäre, wurde entgegnet: „Eine Absperrung ist eine Absperrung!“ Vielleicht hätte man uns einfach freundlich erklären können, warum der Zugang zum Biergarten abgesperrt und hierdurch grundsätzlich nur der Zugang über den Hauseingang gewährt war. Vielleicht hätte man auch auf unseren Hund Rücksicht nehmen und den Zugang ausnahmsweise von außen gewähren können. Unter diesen Voraussetzungen entschlossen wir uns von der Einkehr Abstand zu nehmen. Selbst das schien der Mitarbeiterin egal zu sein. „Dann eben nicht!“ war die Antwort. Dass wir mit unserer Erfahrung anscheinend nicht allein sind, kann anderen Rezessionen entnommen werden. Kundenservice geht anders!

Super vriendelijke en attente bediening. Heerlijke maaltijdsalade en Wienerschnitzel gegeten. Lekker!!!!! Recht tegenover de ingang van het kasteel dat ook zeer de moeite waard is om te bezoeken.

Hands off! Not even in the times of the Eastern Zone were there such complacent, snotty and stupidly anti-sales serving maids: 10.05. Short stop, go in for a drink + something to eat. Partner wanted a slice of cucumber in the drink (cocktail), preferably for a fee, which was missing = the servant's answer = "that's not possible, I'm not going to the kitchen for it!" We threw the card at the feet of this misfortune + ran away. Your colleague shrugs his shoulders regretfully. Bentheim!! Your cow bleating is now avoided because of such ulcers, as if you all had the plague! If you throw her out, your license will be revoked because, as you can read here, she is damaging you on a large scale. We check this from time to time ;-)

We (couple with 2-year-old child) and our friends (couple with 2-year-old twins) were just there. Less than 20 percent of the tables were occupied. The incredibly unfriendly service said they had no room. Only one table had a reserved sign directing us to a restaurant further up the street. 30 minutes later we passed the restaurant again. There was nothing going on (see picture). A local we talked to just said: oh that one. I know that. Children are not welcome there...

Very unfriendly staff. Only a drink is not allowed, people are not allowed to join the queue and if a drop of rain falls the gate is closed and everything becomes even more difficult for the employees. Too bad for such a beautiful place!

Were in Bad Bentheim for the knights' festival on May 1st and 12 of us wanted to have a drink there. There were many tables available, but unfortunately we were told not for 12 people. If we had gone separately we could have had a drink Service is unfriendly, anyone who has such a business policy is not worth my money. Sorry never again.

Apparently the guests choose themselves or don't want to have guests. Countless tables and chairs were free, but apparently nothing was free. No signs for reservations at the tables.

Very very very unfriendly people. We just wanted to have a drink here. The tent was almost empty but we were not allowed to enter because we were more than 4 people. The man behind the counter was also very unfriendly!!

Are you looking for a place where you won't like anything because you know you're actually just being a nuisance? In which you are even told that you are lucky that you are allowed to sit down at all, even though it feels like 30 other tables are empty and unreserved? By telling you that eating isn't possible because the chef doesn't want to make a thousand different dishes, and if so, should they all be the same? By only accepting cash outside(!) (what do I hear about money laundering here??) Where you can watch other guests being sent away because they are not welcome as a group of four or five people? Where children are allowed in, but have to be quiet? Then you are right here. A shame for Bad Bentheim, a shame for all restaurateurs who fight every day for every guest in order to survive. The man with a pigtail should perhaps really reconsider his calling and not appear hypocritical in front of his staff in the reviews, even though he still just complains to them. This is simply an experience report from several people who went to an inn in a good mood and left the store shaking their heads after a round of drinks worth 70 euros.... Bad, really, really bad.....

It is unbelievable …. Unfortunately we weren't allowed to rate the food, otherwise we would have been sent away. Service was zero stars because you were not greeted but rather disrespected. The ambience wasn't much better because the service wasn't interested in looking after customers well

Just had a coffee there. Ordered online at the table, coffee came quite quickly. Staff very friendly.

Great location with a great view of the castle. Staff were great and spoke English, making ordering easy. Food was great and quick.

What a crappy café restaurant, at a not busy time with plenty of empty tables around noon we are told to death that we are not welcome (8 people, family) No groups!! , another family is also not welcome

As others have reported here, what is happening in this store is simply an outrage. I have never experienced anything like it. We came today with 4 adults and 2 children to have something to eat and drink. We were greeted very unfriendly with the words that the children had to stay seated because otherwise the other customers would complain. I think as parents you try to ensure that your children don't disturb you and eat quietly. But I've never been bothered by other children. We were all kids once, my goodness. When we then ordered. With food for the children and just something to drink for everyone, we were literally thrown out. We should ALL order something to eat, please. Seriously? It is written here that it is a German shop. Is this German hospitality? Children's meals or not... don't go there with children!!

Food was delicious. Drinks too. The staff was very nice and accommodating. The atmosphere was really cool.

The selection of food was limited, but there was something for everyone. The service was courteous and friendly. The restaurant has a beer garden.

Ordered Grenopf but did not eat it, actually paid the top price but it is really not edible 🤮 they better check with their neighbors in Alstette Sander Kuper who only know what a Grentopf is... and sauces are served there separately and therefore not on all types of meat and fried potatoes thrown in the pan! 😉

Absolutely unsuitable for children. When we entered the restaurant with 4 adults and 4 children, we were initially greeted with skepticism. This was followed by an unfriendly: “The children have to stay seated.” This could have been communicated in a much more friendly manner and we were really flabbergasted. But due to a lack of alternatives and time constraints, we stayed there. When we were shown the table, we again pointed out that the children had to remain seated. This is an absolute nonsense. However, they do offer meals for children. A contradiction. The prices are not really cheap or normal, but rather above average. Conclusion: Never again! And anyone who has children should definitely avoid this “store”.

It was delicious. But when I got the bill afterwards I thought to myself that 2 waffles, 3 alcoholic thoughts and 2 seven up for over 30 euros. I had a wish but they didn't want to or couldn't fulfill it, which was a real shame

Went there last night and ordered a Bentheimer platter for 29.90. The first impression was great but the food was completely over-seasoned and unfortunately you couldn't eat it. Unfortunately it was the first and last visit!!

De moeite waard. Het Bentheimer menu beveel ik aan. Veel lekker vlees voor weinig geld. Een desert kon er niet meer in.

Schönes Städtchen, an der Burg gibt es einige Gelegenheiten gemütlich draußen zu sitzen um etwas zu trinken oder zu essen.

sehr schön fand ich, dass es den Tee in einem alt hergebrachten Papiebeutel gibt und nicht, wie seit einigen Jahren andernorts üblich, in einem Plastickbeutelchen mit Löchern. Der Service war super, leider gab es keine Servietten, die ich schon benötigt hätte. Ambiente ist ruhig, also nur der normale Café Lärm, keine lauten Autos.

Snelle bediening, ruim voldoende porties en lekkere schnitzels. Let op, alleen contant betalen.

Anno 2023 en geen pin, dus eerst zoeken naar contant geld. Ik associeer het toch direct als schimmige handel. Je moet ook niet denken hier alleen maar een drankje te doen. Je moet verplicht eten bestellen? Ook als op de kaart staat '' Tot 12 jaar '' mag je als volwassene dit niet bestellen. Alleen een patatje? Wat denken we wel niet.... Dit is een restaurant hoor.... Prima dat je een bepaald beleid voert, maar het komt allemaal klant onvriendelijk over.

Eten is goed, met name de schnitzels, die groot zijn en met goeie patat. Bediening en sfeer OK, maar ook niet meer dan dat. En waarom ze nou liever geen pinbetalingen hebben...wij begrepen van hun dat Nederlanders met pin minder fooi geven en da's jammer voor de bediening. Maar toen ik wat meer wilde pinnen voor de bediening, kon dat juist niet??? Je zou er ook wat anders achter kunnen zoeken. En dan te bedenken dat veel Nederlanders helemaal geen contant geld meer op zak hebben...

Fantastisk sted! Maden har en ekstremt høj kvalitet, og alting er lavet virkeligt lækkert! Alle detaljer er top klasse! Alt mad var saftigt, lækkert, fuld af god smag, med masser af kærlighed! Selv børnenes chicken nuggets var saftige, og virkede hjemmelavede. Selv salaten havde glaze og kopperne til ketchup/mayo var lavet af vaffel, så den kunne spises. Højeste kvalitet af mad vi har fået igennem 2 ugers ferie igennem Tyskland og Holland.

Eines der wenigen Häuser die offen hatten. Angebot und Preis der Speisen on Ordnung. Wir mussten etwas lange warten. Achtung: keine Karten zum Bezahlen akzeptiert.

Guten Tag! Mir hat das Essen gut geschmeckt und es gab reichlich. Die Pommes sind so knusprig. Gut wäre es wenn Fischgerichte angeboten werden.

Ik had een schnitzel met champignonsaus, schnitzel was behoorlijk groot en de saus wat te zout. Alleen contant geld, geen pin betaling mogelijk.

In tegenstelling tot vele negatieve reviews hier hebben wij onze twee bezoeken aan dit cafe/ restaurant wel als positief ervaren. Ontvangst, bediening, drank en eten prima ook de vriendelijkheid van de bediening helemaal oké. Oja honden zijn ook welkom op het buitenterras.

Das Essen war wirklich gut und die Preise (noch) OK. ABER: Die Art, wie mit den durstigen Gästen umgegangen wird ist wirklich nicht OK. Die meisten, die hier Kommentare geschrieben haben, haben Recht. Denn es ist schon sehr komisch und auch unverschämt, dass die Gäste bereits am Eingang selektiert werden. Gäste, die nur mit Karte bezahlen können werden wieder weggeschickt. Gäste, die nur etwas trinken wollen werden wieder weggeschickt. Jeder muss etwas essen. Kuchen und Eis scheinen zu reichen, sobald die Küche das Abendessen vorbereitet. In dieser Zeit gibt es dann aber keine warmen Speisen. Verwirrend. Gastfreundschaft und Professionalität sehen anders aus. Leider liegt das Restaurant zu gut, damit sich dort bald etwas ändert. Vielleicht sobald der Mann mit dem Zopf ausgetauscht wird. Denn auch wenn die Kasse stimmt, sollte dieser dringend seine Art überdenken.Aber bis dahin weiter ehrliche Kommentare hier schreiben und versuchen das Geschäft zur Vernunft zu bringen. Ach ja: Essensreste bitte zurück in die Küche bringen und nicht in einer Tonne neben den Gästen entsorgen. Und zum Schluss: In der Zeit, in der wir im Restaurant saßen, wurden fünf (!!!!) Gruppen voller zahlungswilliger durstiger Gäste weggeschickt, nur weil sie lediglich trinken und nichts essen wollten. Hier hätte auch viel Geld verdient werden können.
