Blame it on Jacques Berndorf, the nom de plume of Micheal Preute, grandfather of the very popular regional crime stories set in the Eifel Mountains of western Germany, but nearly everything in Hillesheim, just three kilometers away from the tiny eponymous hamlet of Berndorf, seems to be imbued with mystery, even this cozy little Italian restaurant, Taverna Romana, which, unlike many other places of business in Hillesheim, makes no reference to crime or mystery in its signage or on its menu. And yet it is a mysterious place, one that raises so many questions in the mind of the patron that we visited on two successive nights just to satisfy our curiosity: Did that spiral staircase really change direction half way up? Why is a cat curled up in my chair? Who are the featured artists in the subtle background music (because I know that wasn't Cat Stevens, or Michael Jackson, or the Beatles singing some of their greatest hits)? Were the tables, all of different design, bought at a flea market?) How did the waitress (different local girls on the two nights we were there) understand anything the owner, Massimo Tamburo, said? (Let's call his amalgamation of German and Italian “Ditaliano”, because it is certainly more Italian than German.) How big are the pizzas? (28 centimeters in diameter, as it turns out.) Why is there so much arugula ("rocket" for you speakers of British English) on the menu? And why is it spelled with two c's ("ruccola"), which is neither German nor Italian? Will a pasta dish satisfy my appetite? (It sure did mine.) Is Bitburger beer better on tap than from a bottle? (Much.) Is the house red wine any good? (Surprisingly so.) Is it the best Italian food I’ve ever had? (Not by a long shot.) Is it the best Italian food I’ve had outside of Italy? (Nope.) Is it enjoyable Italian food? (Absolutely.) Is it a good value for the money? (Yes, particularly compared to what’s available in the local hotel restaurants.) And most importantly, would I visit again even if I had all the answers to the questions that were gnawing at me? (Yes, without hesitation.)
