Zum Grünen Gaul in Bochum

Yesterday, four of us enjoyed a delicious meal – BUT: why do you ask about preferences and the occasion when booking? Our preferred table was occupied, but no matter – I wanted a quiet corner because of our small dog, and we were seated next to a large family with children in the middle. Oh well – we were shown to the table with the words, "You have this one for two hours" – very nice. We were actually allowed to move after asking, and the fourth place setting was indeed left for us after we mentioned our guest's train delay. The food was great, but when dessert was cleared, we were curtly told, "Last round..." After what seemed like a complicated search, we were finally allowed to sit at the front and were even asked again after 15 minutes if we wanted more drinks... "We are family"? You need to work on that – and take a page out of the book of hospitality at your big brother, Livingroom!

I was invited here and was very pleasantly surprised. I really liked the atmosphere. The menu was concise yet sophisticated. The service was impeccable. The food was delicious, well-portioned, and imaginatively presented. I think you can also just enjoy a good wine here, but we didn't try that today. All in all, highly recommended! I'll definitely be back.

A very nice location with excellent cuisine, even for vegetarians. We had a delicious vegetarian meal there. It was something unusual and not the usual vegetarian fare. Very good.

I've been wanting to visit this restaurant for a while. It hadn't been possible to do it with friends. Finally, yesterday, we arrived at 6 p.m. with a small group of very nice girls, and a friendly welcome was included. When it came to choosing our food, unfortunately, there weren't enough cards available at the same time, which wasn't great. We finally ordered. We had to wait 45 minutes for the meal without an appetizer, which was a bit disappointing. I was looking forward to stuffed onions with lentils, herbs, and sun-dried tomatoes on celery purée. Unfortunately, the filling was very overseasoned, the lentils were still very hard, and I could only taste spiciness. You had to search for the sun-dried tomato pieces; you couldn't really taste them. When I heard the word "herbs," I was hoping for a variety of fresh herbs, which wasn't the case. That's what I was really hoping for, based on the restaurant's advertising and reviews. The celery purée was delicious. The portion size was okay. I was really a bit disappointed. I'm considering visiting the location again. What a pity.

I'm from out of town and this was my second time eating there. Nothing has changed; everything was fine. The food was good, and the service was good.

A great find when looking for dinner in Bochum. The food and drink selection are really good. The service is super friendly and very quick. We both had the paprika soup with chickpeas for starters and the stuffed onions and hot dog (made with duck fricassee) for main courses: very tasty and definitely recommended.

Brilliant German “Hausmannskost” such a pork knuckle, veal and Swabian dumplings aka Maultaschen. Very impressive wine list and an enthusiastic sommelier!

Families/children are not welcome and not suitable for groups. There are no options for children on the menu, and even when you ask, nothing is offered. Changing facilities are also nowhere to be found, and you'll be rudely directed to a bench, so you'll have to change your baby wherever the next guest is eating. For groups, there's only a reduced menu; orders from the main menu are rejected and delivered to the next table at the same time. The food, however, is fine and tastes good, even if the slightly too small portions make the Greek restaurant around the corner tempting to fill you up. Conclusion: Not a recommendation! A shame; we really expected more.

Unfortunately, it was very disappointing. Two of the dishes were poor. The cutlet was one-third fat, the sauces weren't really there and were watery, lacking much flavor or binding, the entire beef dish was overly acidic, the fried potatoes were still very firm, and the bacon bits weren't fried. :( The waitress was very friendly and attentive, but of course, that's beyond my control. :/

Even though it was full, it didn't take long before we could order and the waiting time for the food we ordered wasn't very long either. The ambience is actually quite nice, but it was very loud in the restaurant due to the many occupied seats without separation. It's not easy to have a conversation without being very loud yourself. The dishes we ordered were tasty, but there was still a bit of room for improvement. Remarkable: An extremely diverse offering for vegetarians.

I was here for a Christmas party with a total of eleven colleagues. Therefore, we unfortunately had a limited choice of food. As a starter there was a plate with meatballs, Mettwurst and all sorts of vegetarian food. You could put that on your own plate. The quality was okay, although not ultra-tasty. For the main course I had the bread dumplings with spinach and mountain cheese sauce. It's not as tasty as the Bavarian original with "Schwammerln", i.e. mushrooms, but it's cooked tastefully. The mountain cheese also filled me up well. For dessert there was vegan ice cream and yeast dumplings with vanilla sauce. Both were delicious, but unfortunately there were no plates for each individual eater, so we had to eat from one plate. Apparently the service didn't feel like handing out more plates or clearing them away again. Maybe it was an order from above. I don't know it. But it doesn't work either way! Otherwise the service was friendly and helpful.

There were nine of us there on Boxing Day. Great service, everyone enjoyed it very much. Successful holiday meal! The homemade eggnog is highly recommended. The gin too!

The restaurant “Zum Grünen Gaul” impresses with its varied, traditional German cuisine, which is interpreted in a modern way. The dishes are delicious and there is a nice selection of wines and beers - there is little to complain about in terms of cuisine. 3.5 out of 5. Unfortunately, there is a significant deduction for handling reservations. You are only allowed to stay for 2 hours, which is unusual for a restaurant of this class. It becomes particularly annoying when you are offered dessert shortly before the end, but you can't even really enjoy it because you are asked to vacate the table twice because it is reserved for someone else. For this type of time pressure, a fast food concept might be more appropriate. After all, culinary delights depend on a relaxed atmosphere, and that's what's missing here.

Tolles Lokal, werde auf alle Fälle noch einmal wiederkommen

A top restaurant near the Bochum Schauspielhaus. Very good food, small menu (but something for every taste), fast and very friendly service (even though the restaurant was fully booked) - we will definitely be back. Parking is possible on the shoulder or in the parking garage at the Bermuda Triangle (5 minutes walk away).

Actually a nice location, but the number of vegetarian/vegan dishes is very limited! It's a real shame, in a district like Ehrenfeld I expect a better vegetarian/vegan selection of dishes. Not recommended for vegetarians and vegans.

Enttäuschender Besuch. Unsere "Hauptspeisen" waren Sparmenues in lächerlich kleinem Umfang zu gesalzenen Preisen, von denen niemand satt werden konnte im Vergleich zu ähnlichen Restaurants. Als Bierempehlung nannte man uns lediglich Fiege, anstatt sich als Servicekraft die Mühe zu geben, weitere Sorten zu erwähnen. Pfeffer- und Salzmühle stellte man uns auf die Fensterbank. Dass der Geräuschpegel zu hoch und die direkte Beleuchtung störend waren sowie die Hocker unkomfortabel, anstatt bequem auf einem Stuhl zu sitzen, werten wir jetzt mal nicht. Wir würden dieses Restaurant nicht mehr besuchen.

Easy to find. Wheelchair accessible. We made a reservation for 10 people two days before and it was no problem. Drinks was served quickly after arrival. Starters were served in a timely manner and there was a pleasant break between starter and main course. The food was great, all of the meals were tasty. I can recommend the tartar as a starter. Wine was poured by the waiter into our glasses during the meals and breaks. FYI be aware that their opening hours a bit unusual so make sure to check this. Overall highly recommended.

Es ist in Ordnung, dass die Tische nach 2 Stunden erneut reserviert werden. Aber wir konnten nicht mal in Ruhe unser Essen komplett aufessen. Dann wurden wir an die Bar gestellt , und das nur für 20 Minuten. Und unser initialer Tisch war immer noch frei, obwohl es uns gesagt wurde, dass die Leute schon gewartet haben. Man bezahlt 60€ pro Person und wird wie bei Mac Donalds behandelt. Die Küche was allerdings exceptional!

Obwohl ich in der Nähe wohne, war das mein erster Besuch im Grünen Gaul. Sowohl Service wie auch Essen (Roulade mit getrüffeltem Wirsing und Kartoffelstampf) waren hervorragend. Im Vergleich zu anderen Restaurants, die ähnlich bodenständige Küche in „einfacherer Version“ anbieten, stimmte auch das Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis. Gern wieder!

Sehr freundliche Bedienung. Die Speisekarte bietet ein gutes Angebot für Vegetarier, aber auch andere Gerichte mit Fleisch oder Fisch sind recht kreativ. Das Ambiete ist rustikal, aber gemütlich. Wir werden wiederkommen.
