Zollhaus IX in Bayreuth

The vegan currywurst is, in my opinion, one of the best in all of Bayreuth! I'd love to see more dishes on the menu, like vegan schnitzel! Very friendly service and a lovely rustic atmosphere.

We had our Christmas party there last night. The location is quite nice, but that's about it. The food was mostly a disaster. We pre-ordered the food a week in advance, and in the morning the Zollhaus called to inform us that some dishes were unavailable "because the supplier didn't show up." In the evening, the Zollhaus served roast goose breast that was completely black and burnt, sauerbraten so tough you couldn't pierce it with a fork, and red cabbage that tasted like bacon and had the consistency of porridge (probably far too much starch used to thicken it). The side salad had no dressing, and the schnitzel sauces tasted bland and too starchy. When we ordered dessert, we wanted the chocolate mousse listed on the menu, but the waiter rudely informed us that he hadn't had it for six months. Why not just remove it from the menu? There were also oil bottles on the tables that expired in June 2024. Firstly, the food was consistently a disaster, and secondly, the service was unmotivated. They didn't handle feedback or complaints well. No wonder the place is closing soon. Nobody will miss it. A real shame!

We had dinner with a large group (30 people) tonight. The service was excellent: drinks arrived quickly, and after a short wait, the food was served to everyone almost simultaneously. It was delicious again! Thank you for a lovely evening!

We were tourists in Bayreuth and stopped here for dinner with our grandson on October 14, 2025. The food and service were good, and everyone was very friendly. Unfortunately, this was soon dampened the next day. After a stroll through the city and a brief stop at the Winter Village, we headed home around 9:00 p.m. Our grandson (12 years old) urgently needed to use the restroom. So he went to the restaurant we had visited the day before, where he was turned away with the words, "This is not a public restroom." While I have a lot of understanding, it's completely incomprehensible to me that a child would be offended like this, especially since all public restrooms are closed at this time of day. Very unfortunate, considering that children are always sacred to us. But this is Germany, and this behavior doesn't make it any better. Family L. from Thuringia

The food was delicious. The service was super nice and friendly.

It was soooo delicious!!! The two of us went there for lunch. We got a good seat, were served quickly, and our food arrived quickly too. The waitress was absolutely lovely, always with a smile and a good joke. For our starter, we shared the baked Camembert, which I had also really enjoyed. For our main course, we both opted for the Western schnitzel, and what can I say: oh my goodness, it was good!!! I haven't eaten anything so delicious in a long time. Simply an ingenious creation. I found the portion sizes generous and the price completely reasonable. It's a shame I don't live in Bayreuth. Otherwise, I'd probably eat there every week ;)

We ate there with a group of 18 people, and everyone enjoyed the food. The staff was friendly and had everything under control. We even sat there for a while after dinner and had a drink. Highly recommended!

First of all, the food was good, but the rest could really be skipped. First things first... the reception was, I'll call it mildly, "not particularly friendly." We hadn't even taken off our jackets or weren't even seated yet when we were asked for drinks. Our time slot was limited to two hours! Okay, after that, things continued at the same pace... The meal, as I already mentioned, was good for the four of us. The server also asked if everything was okay, and everything was. The men were already finished, their plates were empty... whoosh, they were cleared away even though the women were still eating. We looked at each other somewhat incredulously; presumably, there was an acute shortage of plates :) When the server then asked for a nightcap or an espresso even though the girls weren't finished eating yet, the mood shifted a bit. The appropriate response... "Sorry, we're still eating" was met with a very snippy reaction. We then paid………..:(

Highly recommended. We received a friendly and cheerful welcome. Everyone was very attentive, and the atmosphere was very fun. The food arrived very quickly and was consistently delicious. The cocktails are also highly recommended.

The waiter was super friendly and funny. It was a great evening. The food was very good and the portions were perfect. A definite recommendation if you're ever in Bayreuth.

We can't comment on the food itself, because apparently you can't get very far without a reservation on a holiday. Even though they were only open for another hour and only four tables were occupied. And there were only three of us. The ambiance looks good; they've put some thought into it.

Super awesome. The food was great value and well prepared. I have to deduct one point for the bread in the Schäufle (sausage). It was OLD, but otherwise excellent.

First of all: We had to wait a bit for our food, even though it was relatively empty. The interior is very clean and modern. I had the Zollhaus Gröstl (a German dish of German origin), and it was delicious; I have no complaints. The fried potatoes were particularly crispy. My friend had a steak, which was incredibly good; I definitely recommend it – but unfortunately, we didn't like the potato salad. It really tasted like almost nothing. If you're looking for something traditional and new in one, you can eat well here. Maybe we'll just go for something different next time.

The service was very friendly. We waited a long time for the food. We had cordon bleu and spaetzle. Unfortunately, there was no sauce. It was dry and didn't taste particularly good.

The food was good, I had a creamy schnitzel. My friends had shoulder of pork, which they rated as good but not outstanding.

The food (Wiener Schnitzel) was very tasty, the portion size was just right. The breading had nice ripples from the clarified butter. The fries were crispy, but there could have been a few more. The price was reasonable. So, a good 4*.

I was in Bayreuth with my girlfriend on Monday. Since we really liked your menu, we decided to stop by. Unfortunately, the doors were closed, even though the website says it's open on Mondays. It would definitely be wise to adjust the opening hours.

No, .....the sausage salad was more like a soup... the sausage was swimming in cucumber water... which was described as the local dressing... this was the worst sausage salad I have ever been served.....

Friendly service and good food. Unfortunately, not all dishes were available to order, but that's not a big deal. The dishes were pleasantly mildly seasoned, which didn't overpower their original flavors.

There were five of us and we had four different dishes. The schnitzel, fried potatoes, and fries were all excellent. The sausage salad was also excellent. We would eat there again.

It was really good two years ago, but the quality has declined considerably since then. The kitchen closes earlier and earlier, which doesn't speak well for a good restaurant. On Saturdays, the kitchen was already closed at 8:30 p.m. On Mondays, it was even closed at 7:00 p.m. On top of that, the waitress rudely yells at you, "Enjoy your kebab," just because the kitchen's problem was brought up. I'd prefer not to die, but unfortunately, that's not technically possible.

Trotz der Gruppengröße kamen alle Gerichte gleichzeitig und frisch auf den Tisch, was wirklich beeindruckend war. Das Essen war durchweg köstlich und von hoher Qualität. Besonders hervorheben möchte ich den Kaiserschmarrn – das war mit Abstand der beste, den ich je gegessen habe: fluffig, goldbraun gebraten, perfekt abgeschmeckt und einfach himmlisch. Auch der Service war hervorragend: aufmerksam, freundlich und gut organisiert. Die Atmosphäre im Zollhaus war angenehm und einladend – wir haben uns sehr wohlgefühlt. Ein großes Lob an das ganze Team – wir kommen gerne wieder!

We dined at the Zollhaus with a large group of 30 people – and were completely impressed! Despite the group size, all the dishes arrived at the table at the same time and fresh, which was truly impressive. The food was consistently delicious and of high quality. I would particularly like to highlight the Kaiserschmarrn – it was by far the best I've ever eaten: fluffy, golden brown, perfectly seasoned, and simply heavenly. The service was also excellent: attentive, friendly, and well-organized. The atmosphere at the Zollhaus was pleasant and inviting – we felt very comfortable. A big compliment to the entire team – we'd love to come back!

Zollhaus IX is recommended, but the service leaves much to be desired due to the lack of staff. The food was delivered 45 minutes late (it wasn't busy at the time), allegedly due to internet problems, which is unacceptable.

Disappointing Service and Mediocre Food Unfortunately, my visit to this restaurant was disappointing. I wanted a salad with vegetables and chicken instead of the standard olives and asked for the salad to be customized accordingly. Instead of accommodating my wishes, I was only recommended the Caesar salad, which contained completely different ingredients (Parmesan, croutons, no vegetables). The server made it clear that this would be "inconvenient" and directly mentioned possible surcharges instead of simply being flexible. In the end, I ordered the vegetable salad without any changes to avoid the discussion. Unfortunately, the rest of the meal was also disappointing. The schnitzel was tasteless, and the accompanying sauce was far too thick and lumpy—also lacking any real flavor. Overall, not a restaurant I would recommend.

The ambiance is a good mix of modernity and a touch of rustic coziness. The staff are very friendly, courteous, and attentive => thank you for the great service 👍🏻 I think the price-performance ratio is good. The portions are rather small for the price. The fried potatoes were well seasoned but a bit too oily for me. The cordon bleu was unfortunately rather bland. Overall, a good restaurant in a great location, and when the weather is nice, you can find seats in the pedestrian zone.

Unfortunately not convinced. Schnitzel ok, but the Jägerschnitzel is not recommended, the “sauce” is terrible. You have to look for mushrooms. Be careful when ordering water, you can get homemade water here. Wasn't our thing for the price... But the service was very friendly and on the ball ;-).

When visiting Bayreuth, you have to take the customs house with you. We really liked it. Food and drinks were top.

Pseudo-rustic restaurant. The wait for the food was relatively long. I found the schnitzel with fries mediocre. It wouldn't have tasted any better at a snack bar. Therefore, I found it too expensive for such a standard meal. The wait for someone to pay was also long. The service seemed fidgety and stressed.

My girlfriend and I had lunch at this restaurant today. The service was great. The atmosphere was pleasant. My girlfriend ordered the daily special, which was good and very reasonably priced. I ordered the ribs, which were delicious. It was a large portion at a great price. The food was delivered to our table quickly and was piping hot. I would come back if I'm in the area again. We came across this restaurant by chance while on a short vacation. The evening there was pleasant throughout, partly due to the humorous, unstilted and yet respectful manner of the waiter who served us. The food was very good both in terms of taste and quantity, and the price/performance ratio was reasonable. There was definitely enough choice on the menu, and I had an additional dish from the daily menu that was recommended to me by the waiter. The tables are arranged generously, you don't sit crowded against other guests, which creates a relaxed atmosphere. In short, we were well looked after and advised. If we visit Bayreuth again, we would definitely visit this restaurant again.

We hosted our practice Christmas party in the Zollhaus in 2024. It was great. The food was good, the atmosphere was relaxed, the team was nice. We were able to party until the night and had a lot of fun. We have reserved the customs house for our Christmas party again in 2025. A clear recommendation!

The ambience is quite nice, the service was friendly and prompt, but it was quite cold in the restaurant. What unfortunately wasn't really convincing was the food - Bauerngröstl for €14.50... For the location in Bayreuth, well, good but the portion was really more than just manageable and more of a "snack"

I would recommend but you should take the opening times into account. In that respect they are without compromise. We ordered and ten minutes later we wanted to order something more, they said the kitchen was already cold.

I've tried many places in and outside the city, but have rarely experienced such a warm, friendly atmosphere and service. The food doesn't take long to arrive and the guests' requests are taken into account, and the shop itself is very clean. The service does a great job (hats off to these days) as does the kitchen. Coupled with a boss who is present, the whole thing simply makes a recommendation in Bayreuth.

The ambience itself is not bad, but the acoustics are very loud. The main courses are good but the desserts, for example apple cake, are absolutely cold, some are still frozen and the chocolate mouse is unappetizing, like something fecal...unfortunately very unhappy from the kitchen staff. The prices are sometimes rather high. The service was courteous and nice.

Wir, eine Gruppe von drei Freundinnen, hatten Mittagessen im Zollhaus. Unser Besuch begann positiv, da unser Kellner sehr aufmerksam war und unsere Getränkebestellung schnell geliefert wurde. Nachdem wir unser Essen bestellt hatten, warteten wir etwa 20 Minuten, was für uns völlig in Ordnung war. Zwei von uns entschieden sich für das Zollhaus Gröstl, ein Gericht aus klein geschnittenem Fleisch, Sauce und gebratenen Klößen. Leider war das Fleisch trocken und die Sauce geschmacklos, was enttäuschend war. Die gebratenen Klöße waren zwar lecker, aber das Gericht insgesamt entsprach nicht dem Standard, den wir von anderen Restaurants kennen. Die dritte in unserer Gruppe hatte ein Schnitzel mit Bratkartoffeln und war mit ihrer Wahl sehr zufrieden. Rückblickend ist es möglich, dass wir an diesem Tag einfach das falsche Gericht gewählt haben. Wir haben unser Feedback zum Zollhaus Groestl mitgeteilt, sind uns aber nicht sicher, ob es tatsächlich den Koch erreicht hat.

Food was ok, nothing special, rather dry with very little sauce. It was a shame to see so many people being sent away who hadn't made reservations even though tables were free. Depressed the mood a bit.

Dear Zollhaus team, Thank you for the evening. I would like to give you feedback because unfortunately we were not asked on site how we liked it. This is where the first suggestion for improvement begins. We weren't really entertained throughout the entire evening. Ask your guests: “Do you want something else to drink?”, “Is everything satisfactory?” or “Can there be something else for you?” Be attentive and interested in your guests. The food, well it was okay. But for the estimated price, including extra costs for side salad, or extra costs for sweet potato fries instead of normal fries, it should be more than just “okay”. Brathändl exclusively on Saturday for 20€, unfortunately dry, with a little more sauce not so bad, but I couldn't ask because no service was interested. Cheese spaetzle is nothing special, melted butter onions instead of dry fried onions would definitely be in line with the price. Conclusion: You have a great location, if the quality standards were higher and the quality of the food was more in line with the price, there could be a much better rating today.

Very friendly and attentive service. The food is rather average and overpriced. We also had to wait over an hour for our food to be brought! After that the kitchen was closed (8:45 p.m.!), so we couldn't order any more dessert. All in all, rather sufficient!

Der Service war hervorragend: freundlich, aufmerksam und zuvorkommend. Auch die Küche hat uns voll überzeugt – jedes Gericht war auf den Punkt zubereitet und die Qualität der Speisen war überaus hochwertig. Das Ambiente verdient ebenfalls besondere Erwähnung: Man merkt sofort, dass hier viel Herzblut hineingesteckt wurde. Ein richtiges Wohlfühlambiente, das zum Verweilen einlädt. We were a group of 30 people, had pre-ordered our food and were there on time at the reserved time. It took two hours until the first dishes finally came to the table. Unfortunately, most of it wasn't edible - bloody Schäugäferla with salad (?) sauce, cold sweet potato with a few measly lettuce leaves (without salad dressing), leathery sauerbraten with a heap of cabbage... By then we were hungry enough to stop ate what was on the table... price-performance ratio doesn't fit at all. The service was attentive and friendly, but also a bit overwhelmed. We won't be coming back.

Solid food and drinks in a city center location

We went to a company dinner with colleagues at the customs house. Service went just fine, with a bit of a wait we were gradually served. The location itself is really not bad. What unfortunately doesn't work at all is the food. Rarely have I had such a bad schnitzel. In my case the western schnitzel, with terrible ready-made sauce, the cheapest fried onions from the package and disgusting fries. A shame for a Franconian schnitzel restaurant. Therefore, another visit is unlikely.

The alternative to the often already full “Oskar” – with more places outside that are not directly in the sun! 😀

The seats outside were full, but inside everything was empty. When I asked for a table for two people, I received the short answer: "Everything is occupied!". When I pointed out that all tables in the dining room were free, I replied: "We only serve outside!". It's a really big cinema. Things can't be as bad for the catering industry as is often claimed if potential guests are alienated like this.

It's nice to sit outside in front of the restaurant. The staff is friendly. However, the food was very disappointing. In Franconia, serving ready-made spaetzle with lots of sour cream, lots of cheese and store-bought fried onions is simply not possible. The schnitzel was OK.

Lange gewartet bis uns jemand platziert hat. Schnitzel sind im Sonnenhof Pferch viel besser, Getränke leer, niemand hat gefragt obwohl die Flaschen abgeräumt wurden, kein Besteck erhalten erst nach Aufforderung. Service tut sehr beschäftigt rum is aber nur Show.
