Unfortunately, the food has declined considerably, as has the service. But the pizzas are highly recommended. Unfortunately, they're the only ones lately.

We had something to eat and drink last night to wrap up our Moonlight Shopping at the Journal and had actually wanted to end the evening comfortably. Unfortunately, it wasn't as nice as we expected. We were given table 1, in the front corner by the entrance door. The somewhat older, female waitress was very rude; she slammed our cutlery down on the table, making me flinch. She didn't have a single kind word for us... No tealights were lit at our table, like at all the other tables. After the meal, no one asked if we enjoyed our meal or anything else. At the table next door, they asked if everything was okay, and when clearing the table, they even asked if we enjoyed it. Why not at our table? I work in the restaurant industry myself; she shouldn't treat her guests like that. My partner owns a business. If he treated his customers like that, they wouldn't come to his store anymore. So I didn't tip and will think very carefully about coming back. We've eaten here several times before. So we'll probably go somewhere else in the future. We've told friends who also come here often, and they're also considering not coming back.

Nice restaurant with a cozy outdoor area

Sankt Wendel has a flair like no other town in Saarland. At least, I think so. There's always life around the Basilica of St. Wendelin, even when not all the restaurants are open at the same time. This restaurant contributes significantly to this with its generous opening hours. You can sit outside, and in good weather, you feel like you're in Tuscany. It's a lively place, surrounded by beautiful historic buildings and tourists. This time I had a very tasty and juicy pizza, accompanied by a soft drink (lunch menu) and then a hearty Köstritzer beer. The cutlery bag also aptly says "Savoir vivre in St. Wendel." You really hit the nail on the head, that's exactly how it is! One minor negative regarding the ambiance: I had three wasps fighting over my pizza at the same time. But there's nothing you can do about that. That's life. We'll be back when we visit St. Wendelin, and thank you for the delicious food and drinks.

The food looks good. It tasted good, too. Not greasy or oily. A perfect pizza and drink, decorated with lots of love. I highly recommend this place! I'd be happy to go back.

I made the same mistake twice and ordered a creamed mushroom schnitzel. The first time, the (breaded) schnitzel was only cooked on one side, and the instant sauce only had a small amount of mushrooms. The second time, the schnitzel was also only partially cooked, the remaining breading was light and mushy, and the sauce contained one reconstructable mushroom. This time, the fries were cold, too. When there's only a few minutes between ordering and serving, you know they're preparing ahead of time.

I was able to enjoy a delicious meal there without having to wait too long. Even though it was crowded and the service was very demanding, everyone was super friendly.

The service was very friendly and fast. However, the food left a lot to be desired. I think schnitzel with fries and salad for over €19 is fine, as long as the quality is good. For that price, I expect freshly prepared meat, and here they served a convenience product. The speed with which the food arrived during a busy time is not normally possible with freshly prepared food. The fries were very dry. A shame, and not acceptable for the price! If it wasn't a ready-made schnitzel, it would be wise to consider hiring a new chef.

Cafe Journal is very cozy and makes you feel at home. I just find the prices quite high these days, so I don't go there as often anymore. In general, St. Wendel has become extremely expensive, especially when it comes to prices. Drinks are also a shame.

Great food, no long waiting time

Journal is generally consistently good. No outliers, either high or low. Yesterday, however, we were a bit disappointed. I was looking forward to the fried asparagus, which they had last year too. Now there were only 3 (!) spears and a pile of salad that wasn't even listed on the menu. There was no response to my inquiry, and they quickly disappeared. What a shame!

It's very nice to sit here and there are a lot of places (both inside and outside). The food is always really tasty and the selection is good. The drinks menu also leaves almost nothing to be desired. The service is almost always friendly and courteous. The prices are reasonable and the portions will fill almost everyone. One of the things I can recommend in Restaurant Journal is the pizza, as it really tastes different than in other restaurants. There are always great new dishes on the special menus, which is why every visit is special. I can recommend the restaurant to anyone who likes to sit together with good food and good drinks.

A strong start, but then... We spontaneously visited Café le Journal this evening in beautiful weather. The start was great: the lady who served us was friendly, the food arrived quickly and was delicious. But then, a typical scene in German restaurants. After dinner, we wanted something to drink, but the lady greeted our now-empty glasses with a friendly smile and preferred to chat with her colleague. No one even thought to ask if we might want dessert, a coffee, or something to drink. We even had to ask for the bill. As we left, no thank you or even a friendly "goodbye," nothing. Honestly, the restaurant industry doesn't have a problem with a shortage of skilled workers or excessively high taxes. People have forgotten that guests pay their salaries, that friendliness costs nothing, and that people go to a restaurant to enjoy a pleasant evening... and by doing so, dear restaurateurs, you are hurting yourselves. It could have been nice, but if I'm spending money on an admittedly delicious meal, I expect a minimum level of friendliness and service. Unfortunately, Café Le Journal failed miserably. I think that was the last time we went there. It's a shame... but maybe there are still businesses that know that you can make good money if the service is good.

Not bad but there is better despite the normal prices

The ambience was very good. The service was very friendly and attentive. I found the selection on the menu a bit poor. I ordered fries with egg salad. It was on the menu: with mayonnaise. I love egg salad and also know that mayo is part of it. But what I received was a shock to me! The mayo was so thick over all the eggs that just looking at it made you lose your appetite. It was just too powerful, I don't know the dish like that! Since the "mayonnaise salad" completely covered the green lettuce leaves, the drowned leaves could no longer be eaten! Unfortunately the fries weren't a hit either, I only ate half of them, the rest was so hard you couldn't get the fork into it. I left most of the food untouched. Looking at my friend's pizza, I was glad I didn't order one because they have a very thick crust like American pizza. Pizzas, this is a matter of taste, but I don't like them at all. My husband ordered False Rabbit. The meatloaf was a finely chopped sausage meat that was visually more reminiscent of fine bratwurst in terms of consistency and didn't taste anything like meatloaf. He couldn't eat the meat either. All of this was reported to service. Conclusion: Despite the nice atmosphere, we won't be coming here again.

We come from Munich to Sankt Wendel several times a year. Are always in the entrepreneur's hotel and always come to eat. No matter whether it's 10 minutes before the kitchen closes (like yesterday after a hard day due to the Easter market) or at lunchtime - the staff is always friendly and super nice - For us Munich residents, the food was more than satisfactory, regardless of whether it was in terms of taste or price-performance ratio! Unfortunately the food wasn't that great. The schnitzel was not freshly fried, it was kept warm. If you order a cream schnitzel with champions, you should have more than 4 champions on your plate. The sauce was also saved. When I go to a restaurant to eat, I expect better quality food.

Cozy and large restaurant with a good selection of dishes. The portions are also decent, so even good eaters will be full. What bothered me a bit was the inability to reserve in advance on a Sunday evening. Instead, we stood in line in the entrance area for a few minutes until we found a place to sit for three people. When we arrived at the place, we found that we had been assigned a cozy corner and that the waitresses were without exception friendly, quick and competent. We like to stop there again when we pay a visit to the beautiful St. Wendel.

The Café Journal in St. Wendel impresses with its cozy atmosphere. Going to a restaurant alone turned out to be a bad idea. I'm in town for work and after a long journey I was looking forward to a little snack and drink among people. Although there were relaxed tables available everywhere, I was seated against a wall in the far corner. The table slightly next to me was obviously reserved. After 2 people had already ordered a drink, the group apparently became larger than expected. Until then, no problem at all... I offered to sit one table forward to make some room and have more space myself. That was rejected. While I was placing my order, another employee came and interrupted as if I wasn't even there or unimportant as an individual. When my food was served, the table that was in front of me was pulled past my table in order to enlarge the other one. Unfortunately, the candle at my table had gone out due to the whole situation. I looked in my bag for a lighter, which the employee noticed. I was hoping he would turn the light back on, but instead he took the candle, put it on the edge of the table and said it was no problem... I have rarely felt so incredibly bad. I ate quickly so I could get out of here quickly got up to ask for a new seat so I could finish my drink. This was kindly granted to me. But this candle on this table also stayed out….

Prices were raised extremely long ago - ok, completely legitimate. However, a price increase should not be accompanied by a parallel reduction in quality. 🙄 I've been eating Russian salad for years. The portions have definitely become smaller, which others have already confirmed... Unfortunately, we had to mention this last time because we weren't full. The waitress was very friendly and gave us a small portion - plus point for that! However, the amount can and should at least be maintained for a €19 salad... Too bad. 😔

I haven't eaten such a bad schnitzel in years. Café Journal used to be a guarantee of good food. What we had to eat there last week was anything but good. The schnitzels were too thick (convinient) and also too thickly breaded. The breading wasn't crispy even where there was no sauce on it. The sauce was definitely not homemade. The mushrooms in the cream sauce were good, but the pepper sauce tasted old and rancid. The fries were good. The fried potatoes, however, were very greasy and warmed. You can taste that! The only good food was the salad with the tried and tested ready-made sauce. And the service was very friendly. From conversations with friends and acquaintances, I have now learned that you should probably only eat pizza at Café Journal. Very unfortunate.

We had mussels with tomato sauce, fries and herb baguette. Also available with white wine or cognac sauce, an absolute recommendation. Ordered coffee = what came was filter coffee... Service was very hard - the chef (if that was a chef at all 😱) certainly not today - thank you, we won't be coming back 🙈🙉🙊

The food was much better. Lettuce is already brown on the edges and partly wilted. Fries are fatty and anything but crispy. Staff is cheeky, the customer knows rightly because he was sitting at a table that hadn't been completely cleared away. Customer was served reluctantly. Embarrassingly, I overheard this impudence from the next table and felt embarrassed. In any case, I won't go there anymore. It's a shame, it's gone backwards, but there are still many very good restaurants in the area where you can get good food with friendly service.
