Unfortunately now this. After the old owners were ousted, there was hope that it would remain down-to-earth. Well, now it's neither down-to-earth cuisine nor down-to-earth pub. It's a high-class restaurant that doesn't taste bad per se, but it's simply not needed in the area. Unfortunately, it has a bit of an aftertaste here

Visited Tonka many times, but this is the first time I got dissapointed. The spinach knudle I chose was too salty, the sause was bland, and the price was unreasonably high for a main dish made of leftovers. This dish should be dropped from the menu. Everything else was great.

Very nice welcome and generally friendly staff. The homemade lemonade was really tasty, even if it was expensively priced like Frankfurt. The food was partly very good (tonka sandwich) and partly mediocre (matcha pancakes), but that is of course subjective. Will definitely come back again and then the 5* will definitely be there.

We went to Tonka to try something new. The map was small and compact and I really liked that. Everything sounded super tasty and new. Unfortunately, the food didn't perform so well. (The menu changes constantly so I'm only reviewing this meal.) The kitchen treat was mushroom broth and it was delicious and something new! Unfortunately the bread with butter was very dry and had to be chewed a lot and for a long time. The butter could be seasoned more, perhaps with salt? Starters were okay but everything tasted very bland… no taste explosions. The spinach dumpling was soooo dry! The red cabbage is totally unseasoned. The gravy hardly has any taste… Plus point for the arrangement of the plates and the nice waitresses! Minus point for the toilet. Conclusion: there are simply amazing vegan restaurants in Frankfurt and unfortunately Tonka can't keep up. Above all, the price was 25 euros for a main course…unfortunately that was nothing.

Unfortunately, the food didn't meet my taste at all, except for the butter with the bread starter. Nevertheless, I can imagine coming again because the creations are actually very special, which is really commendable. Something that could be improved is to indicate on the menu if a dish contains alcohol.

I recently went to Tonka for the first time and, as a vegan, I felt like I was in seventh heaven. We were greeted very warmly and had a free choice of table. My indecision when choosing the wine and later about the main course was quickly remedied with the knowledge and charm of our server. In general he was very attentive and guided us through all the courses and the evening with humor and sympathy. The food was also super delicious! The breaded pickle as a starter was particularly interesting. We were there just after Christmas and I felt like I was eating a late Christmas meal after the dish at the family's small town restaurant was more than disappointing. The quality and creativity are of course also reflected in the price, which is absolutely justified, but excludes a weekly visit. I'll definitely come back for the next menu change. Very special recommendation from me for this restaurant!

We had the New Year’s Eve Menu which consisted of 7 courses plus wine pairing. Overall, the experience was great! The service was very attentive and super friendly, the location cozy and comfortable, the food delicious! Some of the wines were really outstanding too and you could get free refills. They were also able to accommodate gluten free dishes. I would therefore highly recommend this vegan restaurant as value for money is great as well.

We had booked a 7-course meal for four of us for New Year's Eve and unfortunately arrived about an hour late, which meant we missed the first course. Our friend, who was on time, had understandably enjoyed the first part of the menu alone. However, the service reacted inappropriately to our delay: we were neither greeted nor taken our drinks, even though the second course had already been served. The waiters communicated almost exclusively with our punctual friend and ignored us, which we found unprofessional. In the end the bill was split between three people without consultation, even though this had not been discussed. Overall the service was disappointing and inadequate.

We went to Tonka for Christmas dinner at Christmas. Fixed menu for 75 EUR. It was supposed to start at 7 p.m., the first course came at 7:50 p.m. We asked for bread and then got three half slices of some dry bread. It was advertised as our own sourdough bread, but in my opinion it was baked too tightly and lacked the sourdough note. The menu began with a greeting from the kitchen, followed by 5 courses. Nothing really convinced us, except maybe the mousse for dessert. The red cabbage soup was two spoons in a glass. In my opinion, the risotto was the weakest course. The beetroot Wellington was also not convincing, too dry and not enough parsnip puree. It should be praised that you could get a second helping. There’s still a lot of room for improvement for us. Only the service was very friendly and accommodating.

Fine vegan cuisine. Super delicious and really interesting. I tried exciting creations here that I didn't know before, and the waiters were very nice. Since my companion doesn't speak German, we were immediately brought an English menu and everything was explained in English with each course. The homemade iced teas were great. We spent four hours there and weren't bored. It is advisable to reserve. The two of us paid around 85 euros for a starter, a main course, a dessert and two drinks. There were also two greetings from the kitchen. Since everything was really right here, I think the price is reasonable and I would be happy to come back again.

Was there on a business trip with colleagues, everything was vegan, everything was very interesting. The smoked carrot really caught my attention and I'm someone who doesn't really like carrots and for the first time I really thought about cooking more with carrots myself. Thanks for that. The potato roulade was also very tasty, the umami taste of the mushrooms was great and I really have to say that I have never eaten vegan so well. We've been wanting to try Tonka for a long time, now we've finally done it and, what can I say... it was a restaurant visit that easily made it onto my best list! Well, the menu is very small, but changes at fairly short intervals, so you can still eat there more often without repeating it. We chose the braised fennel with rosemary tomato sauce, crispy potatoes and sourdough crackers and the oven-baked red cabbage with panko breading, beetroot salad and fermented tofu cream, and after expert wine advice, a Kabinett Riesling and a Pinot Noir rosè. After we initially delighted our throats with an amuse gueule and then ate the homemade bread with whipped and smoked margarine, both main courses impressed us both visually and subsequently also in terms of taste! The wines kept their promise of rounding off or counter-accents and during the meal we always felt that the service accompanied us discreetly, but never intrusively. The two desserts, the tonkamousse with white chocolate and blackberry-lavender ice cream as well as the matcha tiramisu with mirabelle plums and organic matcha and the subsequent espresso, also kept the standard high. Yes, you "wait" for a while for the food, but if you want it to be quick, there are other, less convincing alternatives. "Good things take time" - we had time. We really can't understand the negative reviews and will be coming back to eat at Tonka soon. An all-round successful evening with very friendly and attentive service at a reasonable price.

A really great vegan restaurant. The service is incredibly friendly. Restaurant is easy to reach on foot from Leipziger. It's lovely to sit outside in the summer. The dishes are very special, very tasty and something completely different for the taste buds. Selection limited but completely sufficient. Price-performance ratio is also right! I was there with a friend as we both eat a predominantly vegan/vegetarian diet. We were served on the terrace by two very nice gentlemen who were also able to make great recommendations about the wine list. The food was super tasty and well balanced. The food is very tasty and the service is very nice. Unfortunately, the portion sizes are very small and that's why there are only 2 stars: 4 small pieces of bread were served with a spread before the meal. 6 euros were taken for this. We thought it was a greeting from the kitchen. This should have been communicated, other restaurants offer something like this for free. For the main course for 24 euros, only 4 aubergine wedges were served, which is less than half an aubergine. There were also 4 tablespoons of potato salad and some cream. Sorry, but for 40 euros per person with a drink I expect more on the plate.

We were guests at Tonka last night. Service was really very nice. The atmosphere was very lively, we sat outside in the evening and were lucky with the weather (if the weather was good I would also sit outside, you sit in front of the restaurant, but it captures the vibe of Bockenheim very well, especially in summer). The food was delicious, you received a greeting from the kitchen and some sourdough bread with misomargarine beforehand. My main course was really good, but I have one criticism, which is complaining on a high level and certainly also a matter of taste: I actually didn't really like the way the dish was prepared or rather I found it a bit bland in relation to the obvious effort put into it Greetings from the kitchen and the sourdough bread. Ultimately, this is absolutely solid vegan cuisine that is worth recommending!

The five stars are more than deserved. The food was amazing, the service was even better and you felt very comfortable - you can sit outside on the sidewalk and inside you can see the charm of the previous pub. The owner and his service staff are very hard-working, can tell you a lot about the dishes and the concept and the chef knows his craft. The prices are absolutely justified for local organic cuisine (completely vegan) that is unusual (but not so unusual that you no longer know what you are eating). Really nice and a great surprise to have found this restaurant. Conceptually it is wonderfully refreshingly unconventional, simply contemporary and beautiful. Absolutely top service. We were given great advice regarding wines and selection of dishes. Unfortunately, we ended up having to wait a very long time (approx. 1.5 hours) for dessert and the bill, but our waiter recognized this and was able to explain the reasons to us quite transparently and comprehensibly. It would perhaps have been nice to have an espresso or something similar on the house (but of course not a must!) About the food: the sourdough bread is by far the best thing I've ever tried. Absolute recommendation. The mushroom farce was also great. The main courses and the dessert were unfortunately a bit disappointing and, at least for me, did not represent an appropriate price-performance ratio. There is definitely still room for improvement. Unfortunately, I was missing “that certain something” from the main courses for the higher price. If you implement this accordingly, we would be happy to come back again.

Very nice and friendly service that really goes out of its way. The food was okay, but for us it was missing that special twist that gives the dishes a certain sophistication. But everything in itself was delicious. The atmosphere is a bit sparse and it was quite cold. In general, I think minimalist furnishings are nice and the fact that you can still recognize the flair of the former student bar is also nice, but personally I would probably add a little more homeliness and warmth. Especially since many guests were obviously freezing. We had a lovely evening, but personally I think there is still room for improvement, especially when you compare it to other purely vegan restaurants in Frankfurt.

The food was simply fantastic! Although the prices are slightly higher, you get fresh, seasonal dishes. It's nice that there is finally a vegan restaurant with a down-to-earth, instead of the same hip ambience in Frankfurt. All the dishes on the menu sound good, I would have liked to order them all. Our starters and main courses also tasted great. The main courses in particular are far too small for a price of €23 each, so we were still hungry after the main course despite having one starter per person. One dish was BBQ carrots, two fried carrots on carrot cream with a few dabs of mayonnaise. Yes, everything has become more expensive etc., but that's cheeky. The restaurant operator must find other savings options in order to be able to offer an appropriate price-performance ratio. For the bread ordered because of the small main courses, €6 was charged for two slices (!). The otherwise very nice and attentive waiter with a beard also cut the bread throughout the evening without using the cloth that was provided for us to touch, as the colleague on the substitute did. Since the waiters are handling the guests' returned dishes, this is not entirely a hygienic way of working, as one would expect from a restaurant in this price category. The same waiter also continued to intrusively upsell the orders by trying to sell each table a side dish (that cannot be found on the menu) to accompany the main course. At the next table, for example, a side salad to go with a main course salad? Of course no one is forced, but he was persistent enough to convince the hesitant lady. Conclusion: The ambience, taste and friendliness of the waiters are great. Due to the miserable price-performance ratio, we will only visit and recommend the restaurant if something happens here.

The flavours simply didn't deliver. It's a nice enough place, and definitely promising. Nice people, great small surprises like roasted almonds presented creatively in a cup. We appreciate what they were trying to accomplish with their dishes but I've seen well-executed vegan menus, and this wasn't it. We kicked off with the mushroom/onion appetizer. Balanced creamy starters, and they pair nicely with the bread. Yet the miso butter that came with the bread -as a separate side- was the first to miss a central note. Not enough in there to stand out. So much so that we salted it by hand. And the broccoli side dish lacked flavour, came cold, and could've been left out. Next up, the mains. The sushi is fried. I'm okay with subverting expectations but only if you're confident that the surprise will be a positive one. It wasn't. The other main -the walnut balls- were too much and too little at the same time. They'd packed a world of lentils -way too much- and nuts into three (massive, to give credit where it's due) balls but were dry and flavourless. The base, a pumpkin spread, was the antagonist of the night. At its worst a pumpkin spread base should taste at least like pumpkin soup, and at its best, well... that's what makes a great chef. They'd show us what it can be. But surely not this. Too oddly-flavoured, almost chemical-tasting. We didn't try the dessert after the surprisingly heavy dishes. Overall, the service was wonderful, the people and the atmosphere are nice, they're striving for something cool, but as they stand, these dishes still belong in the kitchen for some serious fine-tuning before they can surprise and entertain us the way they intend. Till then, Tonka unfortunately doesn't stand out amongst a recent crowd of wonderfully-creative vegan restaurants in the city.

Visited here for my boyfriend's birthday. It was a good to have a nice vegan restaurant in my neighborhood. Staff was also very friendly and knew the menu well. But it would be nice to have more options to choose on the menu. There was only few choices that I can choose. Also serving was really slow.

Gute bodenständige vegane Küche. Das Sauerteigbrot war ein wenig trocken und sehr fest, es hätte fluffiger sein dürfen. Die Misomargarine war gut. Der kalt servierte Brokkoli war lecker, jedoch recht schlicht gehalten in Präsentation. Das Beet Wellington war sehr gut. Voller Geschmackstiefe und ein sehr gutes Pendant zum ursprünglichen Beef Wellington. Der dazu gereichte Salat hatte ein sehr leckeres Dressing. Der Service war sehr freundlich und kompetent. Man hat versucht das Ambiente so gut wie möglich aufzuwerten. Da steckt wirklich viel Liebe drin. Mit einem besseren Lichtkonzept könnte man den Innenraum sicher ein wenig angenehmer gestalten. Alles in allem eine leckere Küche, die durch ein wenig Finesse in Präsentation und Detail bei den Speisen an Wertigkeit gewinnen könnte. Die Preisgestaltung und Portionsgrößen sind sehr fair.

Ein absolutes Highlight, auch für Nicht-Veganer*innen! Sehr professionelles, kompetentes und freundliches Personal, auf alle unsere Wünsche und Fragen wurde eingegangen. Zur Vorspeise gab es eine Käseplatte mit hausgemachten Crackern (der beste vegane Käse, den ich je gegessen habe) und Muhamarra mit selbstgebackenem Brot. Als Hauptgang dann eine Rote-Beete-Suppe und Kartoffel-Rouladen und zum krönenden Abschluss Quitten Tiramisu und das Tonka Mousse. Geschmacklich war jeder Gang und jedes Essen für sich ein Highlight. Das Timing beim Servieren der Gänge war perfekt abgestimmt, genau so, wie es bei drei Gängen sein muss. In jeder Hinsicht ein Genuss, wir haben uns sehr gut aufgehoben gefühlt und kommen gerne wieder!

Etwas gehobeneres veganen Restaurant an der Stelle der traditionellen Bockenheimer Studentenkneipe "HeckMeck", die leider im März schließen musste. Der neue Pächter hat die alte Einrichtung weitgehend belassen. Die leckere vegane Küche ist die etwas höheren Preise wert. Reizvoll auch die Getränke, z.B. Sanddorn-Schorle und Sanddorn-Radler. Leider montags und dienstags geschlossen.

Wir waren an einem Freitag Abend dort. Das Restaurant war gut besucht und es herrschte eine nette Atmosphäre. Die Hauptgerichte waren geschmacklich sehr gut, frisch und kreativ. Dafür hätte das Restaurant 5 Sterne verdient. Als Vorspeise hatten wir eine Portion Brot (5€) und eine Humustarte (10€), die sich als Teller Humus mit gerösteten Kichererbsen, Trauben und Oliven entpuppt hat. Das war geschmacklich i.O. aber aus unserer Sicht insgesamt überteuert und ein Stück Brot hätte man schon zum Humus für 10€ reichen können. Vorspeisen bekommen daher nur 3-4 Sterne. Was uns letztendlich aber davon abgehalten hat, noch eine Nachspeise zu bestellen war die Wartezeit. Zwischen Bestellung und Vorspeise lagen ca. 30 Minuten und das Hauptgericht kam dann nochmal ca. 1h später. Insgesamt waren wir daher rund 2h für Vorspeise und Hauptgang im Restaurant. Das war einfach nicht, was wir an dem Abend wollten. Wir wollten nach der Arbeit einfach nett zügig was gutes Essen und dann weg und hatten auch nach einem langen Bürotag Hunger. Hierfür daher nur enttäuschende 2 Sterne. Irgendwie schade, weil geschmacklich und vom Grundkonzept ist es ein gutes Restaurant. Vielleicht haben wir auch einfach einen falschen Tag erwischt. Vielleicht geben wir dem Restaurant nochmal einen zweiten Versuch, aber erstmal werden wir nicht wiederkommen.

Sehr liebevoll geführtes Restaurant mit biologischer und regionaler Küche. Die Speisekarte ist überschaubar und wechselt je nach Saison. Das hausgemachte Sauerteigbrot ist absolut empfehlenswert! Justin (einer der beiden Inhaber) war sehr freundlich und man fühlte sich herzlich willkommen. Preise für die Portion in meinen Augen leider doch etwas gehoben.

Such flavorful food! From delicious starters, to stunning mains and crowning glory desserts, the food they prepare here is totally recommendable and satisfying for all senses. Take your time to indulge in the flavors and textures, experience something new. This place enables you to do so. The dishes seem to be seasonal, and you can taste it in every bite. Besides delicious food, they also prepare (and home-ferment) delicious drinks that go well with the food. Again: new flavors await. The service is very friendly and attentive, provided by one person only while I was there. I dined by myself and felt very comfortable. A true recommendation!

Das Essen war leider zu schlicht und wenig kreativ für den Preis. Es entsprach nicht unserem Geschmack, aber das ist natürlich subjektiv. Die Servicekraft war sehr nett, doch im Verlauf des Abends, mit zunehmendem Andrang, wirkte sie unaufmerksam und überfordert. Dies lag vermutlich nicht an der Person selbst, sondern eher daran, dass das Verhältnis von Servicekräften zu Kund:innen nicht angemessen war.

Well-intentioned four stars. Food was delicious and service was nice. Decor attractive. However, it was WAY too cold in the restaurant. After the second course we put our jackets back on. The toilet was also cold and no warm water. No feel-good atmosphere if you sit while eating with ice-cold feet. For a 5-course menu, cutlery is only changed for the main course - beforehand you are asked to keep the used cutlery. Doesn't fit the price and requirements. Would come again in summer.
