Tonka Restaurant in Frankfurt am Main

This was our first time at Tonka. The kitchen and the team showcase vegetarian cuisine in a whole new light. We were amazed at how diverse and flavorful vegetarian food can be.

Good food, creative menu. Staff was also nice but there was a very long wait between courses. Also, they pretended to be full when we reserved but had may empty tables when we were eating.

Former inn. Small but interesting menu. Tonka bean, quince, and sea buckthorn spritzers. Dishes beautifully presented and delicious. Menu changes regularly.

We dined here back in December and was very disappointed by the food. It’s evident that there is effort in designing an upmarket menu but I’m worried this is helping the meat eaters say “told you, vegan food is going be as bad as this”. The kale salad starter had a gross mushroom sauce on top and the pumpkin soup was ruined by completely charred veg slices (can’t even tell what they were). The mains also tasted poor - the parsnips were so firm that they couldn’t be cut or chewed, and the bao with sauerkraut was very heavy - neither could be finished. The staff also tried too hard to be helpful where it actually made us feel quite uncomfortable. They approached every 30 seconds to ask if we want anything, maybe poor communication. As a vegetarian for 10 years, I’ve eaten at many veggie/vegan places in many countries, and this may well be the worst!!

You peruse the concise menu and the simple list of ingredients, and then simply let yourself be captivated by the chef's creation. The presentation on the plates, accompanied by the server's detailed explanation of the preparation, is a dream. The many homemade and locally sourced ingredients, combined with the use of regional products, make it a truly unique culinary experience! We love going there and are always surprised and impressed! An outstanding vegan restaurant and the best vegan food I've had in Frankfurt so far. Original dishes with seasonal and local ingredients – a true culinary journey. I ate at Tonka for the first time today, and everything from the appetizer to the dessert was fantastic. I will definitely be back.

I went to Tonka yesterday with a friend. She had chosen it, which is why I hadn't read any reviews beforehand. My first impression of the ambiance was rather "so-so." But the food – a feast for the senses. All the individual components come across beautifully, but also in combination. I was truly pleasantly surprised. For me, this falls under the "star-level" category – including the presentation of the dishes. The menu is small, but changes every six weeks, as only regional products are used. And it's ALL vegan. 😍 The service was excellent and very attentive. Along with a welcome from the chef, bread was also served. So, I'll definitely be back! 👌🏼

A true highlight for special vegan food in Frankfurt. (Casual) fine dining but still a super relaxed, friendly atmosphere! The dishes are creative and delicious; you can tell the cooking is done with love. Felix and James, the two waiters (very sweet little guys), were attentive and professional, and we received excellent advice, especially on questions about the wines. We felt completely at home and would gladly return!

Tonka takes an exciting approach. Unfortunately, the dishes don't keep up. We've eaten at Tonka several times because we love the idea of ​​focusing on vegetables and mushrooms instead of meat, as they're often more digestible and can taste just as good. The challenges: aroma and texture. Tonka struggles with both. On all our visits, there was one course that was truly delicious. But the other dishes fell short in comparison. Either they try to coax flavor out of the vegetables with roasted aromas—but this tastes quite burnt (as if they've been left in the oven too long or quickly flamed afterward). Or they combine fruity with earthy flavors. This is particularly tricky and sometimes goes wrong. The textures are often sloppy. I remember a baked Romanesco that was simply drowned in a sauce. I felt so sorry for this beautiful (fractal) vegetable. Or a cauliflower drowned in a pink, starchy mush. It just doesn't look good. And it doesn't taste good either, because the flavors blend inharmoniously (and are often too acidic). The dishes generally look poor, and the plates are poorly arranged. The food is either haphazardly arranged on the plate (this was the case with a mushroom dish) or smeared together (often with sauces or mashed dishes). At least you can't tell how the food is supposed to be presented. At the very least, you shouldn't drown the main course in mush. We often found ourselves eating a course despite, not because of, its appearance. Unfortunately, the appearance often extends to the food: It's often just mush. Very good for people with declining bite ability. We feel underwhelmed by the textures. A few nuts don't add any crunch, but seem completely random. Why not try frying or baking something crispy? Vegetables, on the other hand, often have too many burnt or bitter roasted flavors. The service is friendly and makes up for one or two of the food's weaknesses. The ambiance shows its age. However, the intended vintage charm could have used a few updates. Some of the furniture is poorly designed (except for one small, cozy corner). And it smells bad. We gave Tonka several chances. But the negative impressions have become more entrenched over time. It's a shame, because the location and the idea are good.

Fine vegan cuisine. It's made with seasonal vegetables, beautifully presented, and tastes fantastic. Be sure to try the tonka bean mousse, it's a dream! Some non-alcoholic drinks are also homemade, and worth a try. A definite recommendation for special vegan food in Frankfurt.

The restaurant's menu is updated every two months, reflecting the seasonality of the products and the creative approach of the chef. For example, one of the recent menus featured dishes such as potato roll with mushrooms and white wine sauce, as well as baked polenta with crispy vegetables and aromatic sauce. The dessert made a special impression - airy tonka mousse with berry coulis and cocoa nibs, which became a real end to the evening.

It started with a welcome from the chef and homemade sourdough bread. The portions were also very generous (the price seems a bit high at first, but it's absolutely fair for what you get and the exceptional quality). And we didn't have to wait long. But not only was the food amazing, the staff was also incredibly friendly and welcoming – they felt more like friends than service staff. We felt very comfortable and would love to come back. ☺️ Highly recommended for a special evening!

The staff is very friendly and the cafe looks really nice. I only ordered a dessert with coffee, but I was very satisfied. I ended up here by chance and will definitely come back.

We like to go here. Super friendly waitresses who not only take orders and serve food. There's also a little chat involved. A lot of effort is always put into the menu and a lot of ideas are included. However, small adjustments are also possible if desired. An extra side dish or a little more of a part for the part that was prepared with alcohol does not have; is possible. When it comes to drinks, there are interesting and excellent tasting non-alcoholic offerings. As a vegan who follows an alcohol-free diet, you are in very good hands here.

Good restaurant with nice service. The meals were of high quality. However, in some cases these are very small, even for the high prices.

Unfortunately now this. After the old owners were ousted, there was hope that it would remain down-to-earth. Well, now it's neither down-to-earth cuisine nor down-to-earth pub. It's a high-class restaurant that doesn't taste bad per se, but it's simply not needed in the area. Unfortunately, it has a bit of an aftertaste here

Visited Tonka many times, but this is the first time I got dissapointed. The spinach knudle I chose was too salty, the sause was bland, and the price was unreasonably high for a main dish made of leftovers. This dish should be dropped from the menu. Everything else was great.

Very nice welcome and generally friendly staff. The homemade lemonade was really tasty, even if it was expensively priced like Frankfurt. The food was partly very good (tonka sandwich) and partly mediocre (matcha pancakes), but that is of course subjective. Will definitely come back again and then the 5* will definitely be there.

Food, service and ambience were perfect. Rarely have we eaten something so beautifully thought out and regional and seasonal. It's a shame that there can't be such a great restaurant in every city. We'll be back! (Please keep the dessert on the menu ;-)

We went to Tonka to try something new. The map was small and compact and I really liked that. Everything sounded super tasty and new. Unfortunately, the food didn't perform so well. (The menu changes constantly so I'm only reviewing this meal.) The kitchen treat was mushroom broth and it was delicious and something new! Unfortunately the bread with butter was very dry and had to be chewed a lot and for a long time. The butter could be seasoned more, perhaps with salt? Starters were okay but everything tasted very bland… no taste explosions. The spinach dumpling was soooo dry! The red cabbage is totally unseasoned. The gravy hardly has any taste… Plus point for the arrangement of the plates and the nice waitresses! Minus point for the toilet. Conclusion: there are simply amazing vegan restaurants in Frankfurt and unfortunately Tonka can't keep up. Above all, the price was 25 euros for a main course…unfortunately that was nothing.

Today we went to Tonka for the first time! To start with: a definite must-go! Ambience refreshed from old pub times. Very attentive, friendly and competent service! A small but (!) nice card. So delicious! This was definitely not the last time, I'll be back, no question! Kind regards, Chris.

Unfortunately, the food didn't meet my taste at all, except for the butter with the bread starter. Nevertheless, I can imagine coming again because the creations are actually very special, which is really commendable. Something that could be improved is to indicate on the menu if a dish contains alcohol.

Great menu: everything vegan - regional, seasonal and very creative; with individual recommendation. The food was super tasty and the portion sizes were perfect; Amuse gueule, sourdough bread and spreads were also included. The service was attentive and very nice :-)

I recently went to Tonka for the first time and, as a vegan, I felt like I was in seventh heaven. We were greeted very warmly and had a free choice of table. My indecision when choosing the wine and later about the main course was quickly remedied with the knowledge and charm of our server. In general he was very attentive and guided us through all the courses and the evening with humor and sympathy. The food was also super delicious! The breaded pickle as a starter was particularly interesting. We were there just after Christmas and I felt like I was eating a late Christmas meal after the dish at the family's small town restaurant was more than disappointing. The quality and creativity are of course also reflected in the price, which is absolutely justified, but excludes a weekly visit. I'll definitely come back for the next menu change. Very special recommendation from me for this restaurant!

We had booked a 7-course meal for four of us for New Year's Eve and unfortunately arrived about an hour late, which meant we missed the first course. Our friend, who was on time, had understandably enjoyed the first part of the menu alone. However, the service reacted inappropriately to our delay: we were neither greeted nor taken our drinks, even though the second course had already been served. The waiters communicated almost exclusively with our punctual friend and ignored us, which we found unprofessional. In the end the bill was split between three people without consultation, even though this had not been discussed. Overall the service was disappointing and inadequate.

We had the New Year’s Eve Menu which consisted of 7 courses plus wine pairing. Overall, the experience was great! The service was very attentive and super friendly, the location cozy and comfortable, the food delicious! Some of the wines were really outstanding too and you could get free refills. They were also able to accommodate gluten free dishes. I would therefore highly recommend this vegan restaurant as value for money is great as well.

We went to Tonka for Christmas dinner at Christmas. Fixed menu for 75 EUR. It was supposed to start at 7 p.m., the first course came at 7:50 p.m. We asked for bread and then got three half slices of some dry bread. It was advertised as our own sourdough bread, but in my opinion it was baked too tightly and lacked the sourdough note. The menu began with a greeting from the kitchen, followed by 5 courses. Nothing really convinced us, except maybe the mousse for dessert. The red cabbage soup was two spoons in a glass. In my opinion, the risotto was the weakest course. The beetroot Wellington was also not convincing, too dry and not enough parsnip puree. It should be praised that you could get a second helping. There’s still a lot of room for improvement for us. Only the service was very friendly and accommodating.

Fine vegan cuisine. Super delicious and really interesting. I tried exciting creations here that I didn't know before, and the waiters were very nice. Since my companion doesn't speak German, we were immediately brought an English menu and everything was explained in English with each course. The homemade iced teas were great. We spent four hours there and weren't bored. It is advisable to reserve. The two of us paid around 85 euros for a starter, a main course, a dessert and two drinks. There were also two greetings from the kitchen. Since everything was really right here, I think the price is reasonable and I would be happy to come back again.

Was there on a business trip with colleagues, everything was vegan, everything was very interesting. The smoked carrot really caught my attention and I'm someone who doesn't really like carrots and for the first time I really thought about cooking more with carrots myself. Thanks for that. The potato roulade was also very tasty, the umami taste of the mushrooms was great and I really have to say that I have never eaten vegan so well. One of the best vegan restaurants I’ve been to!! Place and food were great, I loved it so much that I had to come back the next evening. I tried the entire menu and everything was really lovely, for sure I’ll come back if I find myself in Frankfurt again!

We've been wanting to try Tonka for a long time, now we've finally done it and, what can I say... it was a restaurant visit that easily made it onto my best list! Well, the menu is very small, but changes at fairly short intervals, so you can still eat there more often without repeating it. We chose the braised fennel with rosemary tomato sauce, crispy potatoes and sourdough crackers and the oven-baked red cabbage with panko breading, beetroot salad and fermented tofu cream, and after expert wine advice, a Kabinett Riesling and a Pinot Noir rosè. After we initially delighted our throats with an amuse gueule and then ate the homemade bread with whipped and smoked margarine, both main courses impressed us both visually and subsequently also in terms of taste! The wines kept their promise of rounding off or counter-accents and during the meal we always felt that the service accompanied us discreetly, but never intrusively. The two desserts, the tonkamousse with white chocolate and blackberry-lavender ice cream as well as the matcha tiramisu with mirabelle plums and organic matcha and the subsequent espresso, also kept the standard high. Yes, you "wait" for a while for the food, but if you want it to be quick, there are other, less convincing alternatives. "Good things take time" - we had time. We really can't understand the negative reviews and will be coming back to eat at Tonka soon. An all-round successful evening with very friendly and attentive service at a reasonable price.

Dedicated, super nice, young team. Creative food and drinks (the homemade “Shrub” is recommended). It's also great that sustainability is also taken into account when it comes to napkins and towels - they are all made of fabric.

I was there with a friend as we both eat a predominantly vegan/vegetarian diet. We were served on the terrace by two very nice gentlemen who were also able to make great recommendations about the wine list. The food was super tasty and well balanced. The only thing that was a bit too sweet for us was the dessert, but that's definitely a matter of taste. Many thanks to the team, Tonka is definitely worth a visit!

The food is very tasty and the service is very nice. Unfortunately, the portion sizes are very small and that's why there are only 2 stars: 4 small pieces of bread were served with a spread before the meal. 6 euros were taken for this. We thought it was a greeting from the kitchen. This should have been communicated, other restaurants offer something like this for free. For the main course for 24 euros, only 4 aubergine wedges were served, which is less than half an aubergine. There were also 4 tablespoons of potato salad and some cream. Sorry, but for 40 euros per person with a drink I expect more on the plate.

We were guests at Tonka last night. Service was really very nice. The atmosphere was very lively, we sat outside in the evening and were lucky with the weather (if the weather was good I would also sit outside, you sit in front of the restaurant, but it captures the vibe of Bockenheim very well, especially in summer). The food was delicious, you received a greeting from the kitchen and some sourdough bread with misomargarine beforehand. My main course was really good, but I have one criticism, which is complaining on a high level and certainly also a matter of taste: I actually didn't really like the way the dish was prepared or rather I found it a bit bland in relation to the obvious effort put into it Greetings from the kitchen and the sourdough bread. Ultimately, this is absolutely solid vegan cuisine that is worth recommending!

Completely vegan menu. There are only a few dishes, but they are fresh and exceptional. I don't think it's a bad thing that there are only a few dishes. Food was very tasty. But the portions could be a little larger. Price is relatively high. The wine recommendation was very good and went perfectly. The map changes every few months. That invites you to come back.

We had the sourdough bread as a starter, then the bak pao and the koji pointed cabbage. For dessert there was tonkamousse and strawberry-basil sorbet. The entire meal was not only beautifully presented, but also tasted excellent. As a greeting from the kitchen, there was even a small appetizer at the beginning. The menu changes regularly due to the regional and seasonal products. We will come back in any case!

The five stars are more than deserved. The food was amazing, the service was even better and you felt very comfortable - you can sit outside on the sidewalk and inside you can see the charm of the previous pub. The owner and his service staff are very hard-working, can tell you a lot about the dishes and the concept and the chef knows his craft. The prices are absolutely justified for local organic cuisine (completely vegan) that is unusual (but not so unusual that you no longer know what you are eating). We'll definitely be back - thank you for the lovely evening.

It was our first time in this great vegan restaurant and we were completely thrilled! It starts with the friendly and personal welcome explain the menu/dishes and the attentive service. There is never a lack of anything. The service takes place with a nonchalance that rarely occurs and that is exactly what creates this pleasant atmosphere. You just feel comfortable and welcome. The dishes on offer were also completely convincing due to their sophistication. They were truly a taste experience. The perfect wine to accompany it rounded off the excursion into the vegan cuisine, which is well presented here. We are already looking forward to the next visit!

Unfortunately, we ended up having to wait a very long time (approx. 1.5 hours) for dessert and the bill, but our waiter recognized this and was able to explain the reasons to us quite transparently and comprehensibly. It would perhaps have been nice to have an espresso or something similar on the house (but of course not a must!) About the food: the sourdough bread is by far the best thing I've ever tried. Absolute recommendation. The mushroom farce was also great. The main courses and the dessert were unfortunately a bit disappointing and, at least for me, did not represent an appropriate price-performance ratio. There is definitely still room for improvement. Unfortunately, I was missing “that certain something” from the main courses for the higher price. If you implement this accordingly, we would be happy to come back again.

Very nice and friendly service that really goes out of its way. The food was okay, but for us it was missing that special twist that gives the dishes a certain sophistication. But everything in itself was delicious. The atmosphere is a bit sparse and it was quite cold. In general, I think minimalist furnishings are nice and the fact that you can still recognize the flair of the former student bar is also nice, but personally I would probably add a little more homeliness and warmth. Especially since many guests were obviously freezing. We had a lovely evening, but personally I think there is still room for improvement, especially when you compare it to other purely vegan restaurants in Frankfurt.

We visited Tonka for the first time a few months ago. The service was extremely courteous, friendly and competent. The rustic ambience gives the place a very special but extremely cozy charm. The food was simply fantastic! Although the prices are slightly higher, you get fresh, seasonal dishes. Tonka is also highly recommended for non-vegans, especially if you are looking for something special in Frankfurt.

Incredibly delicious! The roulade was so delicious.. I could have indulged in the sauce..! The prices are high but every bite is worth it. We will be back definitely!
