A typical Greek restaurant that can only be recommended, fair prices and what's more, it tastes good too

We've been guests here for decades and always enjoy coming back. Last night, too, the food was incredibly delicious. Four of us were there and had four different dishes, all of which were excellent. Full marks for the food! Now, unfortunately, there's a big BUT: Prices have risen sharply in recent years, as they have everywhere. Unfortunately, the portions are also really small these days. You absolutely need an appetizer to go home feeling normally full. What also shocked us a bit was the new tableware, as many dishes are served on black plastic plates. My village plate contained a tiny handful of gyros, a skewer, and a stick that were so thin you didn't need a knife to cut them. For 19 euros, I was extremely disappointed in terms of value for money :-(

We were back at Taverne Athen after what felt like an eternity. It's very cozy, but not too cramped, as is sometimes the case. The service is great, but the most important thing, of course, is the food. Here, too, I have only positive things to say. It was very tasty and the portions were generous. The gyro was crispy, the liver tender, so everything was great. We'll be back.

I've been a guest here for over 30 years. For us, there's no better Greek food in the entire area. The ambiance is fantastic – the terrace is a dream in the summer, and the service is excellent.

I love this Greek restaurant, and we've been going there ever since the kids were little. The owner greets and says goodbye with a handshake. Children of all ages are welcome, and with the aviary and fountain, there's something to see everywhere. The outdoor area is lovely, covered in vines. Due to rising costs, the food has changed. For example, there's no longer octopus salad on the cold appetizer platter. Nevertheless, it's always worth immersing yourself in the rustic atmosphere!

We've been to Taverne Athen several times, and the food has always been good to very good. The service is very well organized, and everyone is super friendly! Outside, you immediately feel like you're on vacation. Inside, you can choose between the smoking and non-smoking areas. The non-smoking area is very loud! Therefore, we always choose the smoking area. Thanks to the well-designed ventilation system, there's no unpleasant smell, and you can eat in complete relaxation. All in all, it's great! Keep up the good work, and thank you very much!

Absolutely fantastic ambiance; I've never seen such a beautiful interior! Unfortunately, the service was a bit slow, and the portions could have been a bit larger for the price. Still, the food was really good! Unfortunately, parking is difficult during the week.

Ordered food for pickup today. The grill plate I ordered was a children's plate, and for €18, it didn't even come with a spoonful of tzatziki. I don't understand that. A grill plate should include something like that, in my opinion, and the quality of the meat has been better in the past.

The ambiance and the service are both very pleasant. The staff are very friendly, and you feel like you're on vacation right away. The women's restrooms are a bit small, but very clean. What I personally found worst, although it was probably just meant to be a nice gesture: We were served ouzo right at the beginning without asking. The children were also given an ouzo each without asking, without being given a chance to refuse it. Since we don't drink alcohol, and the children certainly don't, we gave it to our companions. But I find it borderline offensive to silently place alcohol in front of children. Perhaps in the future, they could ask if they want it before serving it. Unfortunately, I personally can't say much positive about the food, but that might also be because Greek cuisine just isn't for me and my daughter. But since we were invited, we went anyway. My daughter chose the spaghetti in tomato sauce with baked cheese. Unfortunately, they were just swimming in oil and fat. And that's exactly how they tasted. I ordered the grilled salmon steak and got deep-fried salmon that was clearly not grilled. But there was no mention of this on the menu. Either I got the wrong dish, or the salmon steak is always prepared that way there. In that case, it would be great if they stated on the menu that the salmon is served breaded and deep-fried, because then I wouldn't have ordered it. To be fair, the kitchen had no opportunity to make adjustments because we didn't say anything about it. I'm not a fan of wasting food and didn't want the fish to end up in the trash. My daughter made do with my salad, which wasn't anything special but was OK, and some fries from other plates. The others enjoyed their meals and will be back.

The food was quite normal (just like a Greek restaurant in Germany). The food was served 30 minutes after ordering.

Super delicious food, friendly service and wonderful authentic Greek atmosphere

Unfortunately, the food was only acceptable for the price, but not good enough to make me want to go back. The gyro was veeeeeeery dry. This has also been mentioned in many other reviews I've read. Perhaps they shouldn't keep the cooked and sliced ​​meat warm for too long, or rather, make sure it doesn't dry out. I'm a professional myself, and we chefs have our options;) The taste and portion size were okay, though. But the price could be lower considering the quality of the food.

Delicious food and friendly staff; the cold appetizer platter and the bifteki are especially recommended. There's a playground outside for the kids, and it feels like you're on vacation.

Children's portions, too expensive for too little

We ended up in Ingelheim by chance after a bike tour and were happy to get a table here. The food was ok, but the portions were a bit small - we each ordered an extra portion of fries to fill us up. The meat and the small portion of rice on the plate seemed a bit lost. There was no (local) pepperoni to be found either in the side salad or anywhere else. Tzatziki has to be ordered separately for most dishes - a dollop on the plate costs an extra 2.50 euros. The staff is friendly and particularly attentive, it seems as if they are patrolling, every 2 minutes someone else from the staff came and did their rounds, which is rather unpleasant. EC card payment is not possible, only credit card. All in all: too expensive, there are better alternatives for Greek food.

By far the best Greek restaurant I've ever visited was here in Ingelheim. The staff is just like the ones in an ouzo commercial: friendly and welcoming. The food was delicious and the ambiance is outstanding. It feels like you're on vacation. The atmosphere is simply wonderful. The prices are also reasonable. Top-notch. Really top-notch.

Anyone who raves about the food here in the reviews probably has no idea what good food is. The meat didn't taste fresh and the side dishes were completely overcooked. The bread that was served as a side dish came cold and was definitely 2-3 days old. Overall, I can say that the atmosphere is very nice and the staff are very friendly. The prices are overpriced and the food is definitely not worth the price. There are Greek restaurants in the area that are a lot cheaper and taste worlds better.

The Athens Tavern in Ingelheim is an absolute gem! From the moment we entered we were enchanted by the warm and welcoming atmosphere. The staff is incredibly friendly and attentive, and the service was first class. The food was simply delicious. Every bite was full of flavor and the portions were generous. We were particularly impressed by the quality of the ingredients - everything tasted fresh and authentic. For me the best Greek restaurant far and wide

I've been to 4 Greeks in Rhineland-Palatinate/Hesse so far and I still believe that the Athens tavern in Ingelheim is the best Greek. You just feel very comfortable here. We come very often and have never been disappointed. Thanks for that!!! keep it up..... TOP!!!!!

The boss himself gave us a table for four on Boxing Day. The waitress with dark hair and big eyes is always particularly friendly. (We've been there a few times now) The food is very good and there is definitely something for vegetarians to eat😊 By the way, dogs are also welcome there 🥰

Although the restaurant was very busy and we had originally made reservations for 10 people but ended up with 13 people, the team was extremely open and helpful. Food not really warm, dry, partly slightly over-roasted meat (gyros), to put it discreetly, and fart-dry. The portion of rice was a joke. Mass production. Quality and price performance are in dire straits. You don't have to have it twice.

We have been visiting the restaurant for years. The food is delicious, well seasoned and the portion is completely sufficient for me. In terms of price, I see the restaurant as being on the lower side. We visit various Greek restaurants and have already had a few seen higher priced cards. The service is attentive, there's nothing to complain about. Ashtrays on the table outside don't bother me. Everyone can (fortunately) decide for themselves whether to use it or not. Everyone is also free to choose the restaurant.

This was an absolutely great first time experience at Taverne Athena in Ingelheim am Rhein. We received a positive recommendation and took some friends to dine with us. I would recommend a reservation, but it is not necessary. The staff was very accommodating, polite, and professional to all that asked for service. We were seated very fast and offered a complimentary, ice cold, Ouzo. The food was delicious with a sizeable portion and the menu had good variety. It fulfilled my expectations for having a great night, in an oustanding atmosphere, and with a delicious meal. I highly recommend Taverne Athen and will absolutely make reservations again.

The food in the restaurant is really delicious. There were two of us there and we had a grill plate and calamari. I was thrilled with the calamari, it was freshly prepared (as fresh as fish can be in this place). The restaurant is large and very full in the summer months, making it loud and confusing. The service did its best and was friendly, but the number of people remained a noticeable challenge.

It tastes okay, but every dish can be found elsewhere for 3-5 euros cheaper and a little tastier; other Greek restaurants in the area also have larger portions. Nice outdoor area, but you're guaranteed to meet smokers there - you don't have to ask for an ashtray, it's right on the table and won't be put away without asking.

Went there spontaneously yesterday. The food was carelessly prepared, but the taste was good and the portions were very manageable. Price-performance is therefore not right. Too bad.

Our favorite restaurant for years! This family-run Greek restaurant offers a wonderful mix of authentic cuisine, warm hospitality and fair prices. The portions are generous and the quality of the food leaves nothing to be desired. The traditional dishes such as gyros and bifteki are always a delight. You can feel that the cooking here is done with love and dedication - the atmosphere is cozy and familiar, you immediately feel welcome. A small wish: It would be nice if the vegetarian selection was expanded a bit. Otherwise there is absolutely nothing to complain about. We always enjoy coming here and look forward to our next visit!

As soon as you walk in you are hit with the smell of mildew from the fountain. We ordered mussels in tomato sauce and they were microwaved, soggy, and extremely fishy. We ordered lamb and it tasted like gasoline so we sent it back. The second lamb dish tasted the same. We ordered beef next and it was mostly fat. We were brought the wrong wine twice and sent it back. We were charged for all of the items we sent back (mussels, 2x lamb, wine). Horrendous service and not sure who is giving the good ratings for this place. It was not worth €140 as we didn’t eat anything and were served old food. Very very bad experience and unfriendly staff.

Update 7/21/24: After a long time we finally went here to eat again; Unfortunately we were disappointed with the main course. The warm starter platter was extremely tasty and has now become richer again. Given how full the restaurant was, our food came quite quickly. The service is still super friendly and attentive. Unfortunately, the main course was both tzatziki; as well as our food (marathon plates and village plates) were completely over-seasoned and sometimes significantly oversalted. It's a shame - we know it differently and better. My wife's food was complained about and brought back immediately. Unfortunately also over-seasoned as described above. End of update. Always my pleasure. Nice service, good prices and really tasty food; I also like to be outside in the summer

Very nice atmosphere with lots of nice corners to sit. Small playground, fountain, bird aviary, etc. Everyone really liked the food, spicy and fresh. The portions are really good, but if you want an XXL (with half being thrown away) it might not be enough. I thought it was great for the prices. The baklava for dessert tasted much better than I've ever had from a Turk. The service did everything right, something you rarely find in German restaurants these days. Friendly, understanding and you weren't forgotten. Despite my satisfaction, there is room for improvement: no plastic tablecloths, and special Greek wines, please not only in the bottle.

The six of us were there two weeks ago and when I paid I was told that the only way to pay was with a credit card. Puzzled, I said that this had never happened to me thousands of times in this country and that I couldn't pay. Who walks around with their credit card, except abroad. Then there was some talk on the phone and the waiter came back straight away and things went as usual. Should cash be sought and why? So we won't be going back any time soon.

Like Berliners, are here for the first time and are totally thrilled. A very cozy atmosphere, great service and very tasty food. Complaints are recognized very quickly and addressed with attention. Very loving and attentive staff. I want and will come again. Thank you for everything.

I was there recently with several people during the week; Everyone had gyros on their plate. Unfortunately the taste was not tasty and it was very, very dark (on all plates). We've never experienced anything like this from a Greek. A complaint to the waiter only elicited a shrug from him. The starter was brought with the main course and followed the poor quality level of the main course. We skipped dessert. Hence 2 stars. The service wasn't really attentive; Reordering drinks seemed to be designed as an Olympic task. Conclusion, we won't be coming back.

Das war wohl nichts. Gyros bei allen vier Essen verbrannt und ungenießbar. Obwohl wir das alle reklamiert haben, kein Wort der Entschuldigung. Auch bei der Bezahlung wurde nicht auf unsere erneute Reklamation eingegangen.

It's very comfortable and nice to sit there and the food tastes very good. I had a salad plate with turkey strips. But there were only 2 types of lettuce and 3 tomato wedges on the plate (leaf lettuce and coleslaw) and there was only a tablespoon full of the coleslaw. I think that if it is offered as a main course there should be 3 to 4 types of salad. And it wasn't very appetizing when presented. The eye is there!!!!

The beautifully designed beer garden creates a Greek holiday feeling. We liked the food very much and was well seasoned. It's a shame that there aren't the usual potato slices.

Yes, we were there with a group and had reserved, but the table for 8 people was far too small, at most 6 people. As always, the service was okay, fast, and the prices of the food were okay too. Although the side salad was rather small, only greens, 4 leaves and a forkful of coleslaw with a slice of tomatoes. It was better, well, you have to save money somewhere, in my opinion you don't need it anymore. But we will go back because the dishes taste good.
