Very good Indian food, always happy, we'll be back

We ordered Tandoori Chicken Biryani and Lamb Karahi, and while Lamb karahi was okay, I would say the Biryani was definitely NOT a biryani, it was more like masala chicken pulao, with shredded chicken pieces and dry fruits such as raisins, cashews, almonds and coconut powder. While this may be this restaurant’s own style of making this dish but it was dissatisfying for us as we were craving for an authentic biryani, so I’d say if you are expecting the taste of a real biryani, this may not be a place, however for other curries, it’s still fine.

Be alert! This is not an Indian restaurant. The food quality is very poor. Nothing here is authentic Indian. Being an Indian, I would never suggest this restaurant to anyone in Trier.

I went to pick up my food this time and was back at the Taj Mahal. As a vegetarian, I always order the mango curry vegetarian which usually only contains peas and carrots in the sauce. But this time I was really surprised! The sauce was significantly improved and was not only tastier but also more varied. There were even pieces of tofu and cauliflower, which gave the dish great variety and depth. I was absolutely thrilled! It was so incredibly delicious. Please keep the dish as it was today! :)

The food was delicious, we were there relatively early and it was still very quiet.

This review is only about the restaurant in Trier. We have never had any problems in Bernkastel-Kues and everything has always been great. This was our second time visiting this restaurant after it didn't go so well the first time. We ordered lentil soup as a starter and what came was a pretty clear broth that had absolutely nothing to do with it. I even asked the service staff if they hadn't accidentally brought us chicken soup, which they said no. It was garnished with a slice of lemon, although I had a long hair stuck to it, which I couldn't miss. When the soups were brought, a waiter dropped his spoon. He said he would bring me a new one straight away but in the end I had to get up myself and ask again because it had been forgotten. We also waited about 2 hours for the main course to come to the table. The food itself was good but there was no service at all. You had to constantly ask if you could still have bread or rice, whereas in Bernkastel you were proactively asked about it. Same game with drinks. Of course there was no tip for that reason. Everyone has a bad day and that's why we gave the place another chance, but from now on we will never come here again.

100% recommendation. I have been to India a few times myself and know Indian cuisine well enough to judge how typical and tasty the food is in the Taj Mahal. I eat lunch there regularly and even the lunch dishes are very, very good. The friendliness of the service is also excellent and the atmosphere is perfect.

My enthusiasm here goes to the owner, the ambience as well as the excellent food, the preparation of which takes allergies and other health restrictions into account. We will happily return more often to fully explore the menu. A fantastic start has been made for today. Thank you for a great culinary experience for my birthday. We were here for the 12.5 year anniversary of the parsley wedding and had a delicious meal cooked for us. It was very tasty and therefore a successful evening here at the Taj Mahal.

The Taj Mahal is one of our favorite restaurants in Trier. We come here regularly and always go home full and satisfied. The owner and service are super nice, the food is delicious and the prices are more than fair. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Taj Mahal is the restaurant where we pick up the most food or eat at regularly. The prices are fair and the food is always fresh and tasty. The portions will fill you up and the staff is very friendly. Keep it up, everything is great!

The food is great. But for the portions what you get is not enough. It's better to order take-away and you will get more. Also the atmosphere is not that great nothing to do with India. This needs to be fixed. For the 3 dishes with 1 bottle of water and 2 bread you pay €30,- expensive. Not enough rice with the sauce.

An excellent Indian restaurant. The quality, freshness and taste of the food - and also the various freshly prepared yoghurt and milk drinks - are simply unrivaled here. I've already tried several Indian places - and the Taj Mahal in Trier is simply great in comparison. For this reason, I always like to come back regularly and enjoy typical Indian dishes in a pleasant, sociable atmosphere - my final praise goes to the nice and courteous boss and his friendly employees.

The drink order came incorrectly, but the error was noticed and corrected. Some drinks on the menu were out of stock, so we had to switch to other drinks. The food was good and so was the portion size. So value for money is completely okay, service is also ok. I didn't like the atmosphere that much (former official building?)

Ich bin einfach nur begeistert. Der Eingang ist ziemlich unscheinbar, dasswegen wäre ich nie selber reingegangen, aber mein Freund kannte das Restaurant und hat es empfohlen. Das Ambiente ist super schön, alleine die Stühle sind mehr Kunst als Sitzmöglichkeit. Das Essen war wahnsinnig lecker und für Veganer geeignet. Auch das Sytem hinter dem Esyen gefällt mir sehe gut. Es gab einen leckeren, traditionellen Gruß aus der Küche, der das gesamte Warten überbrückt hat. Neben dem ausgewählten Essen gab es zusätzlich all you can eat Brot und Reis. Auch beides besonders lecker. Man bekommt eine Portion von beidem und kann unendlich viel kostenlos nachbestellen. Das wird so gemacht, um Essensverschwendung zu vermeiden. Sehr lobenswert. Bei so einem Service müsste man einen hohen Preis erwarten, aber nein. Das Mittagsmenü kostet zwischen 8 und 8,5 Euro. Ein wirkliches Schnäppchen. Dazu kommt das Essen schnell und die Bedienung ist recht freundlich. Ich kann jedem einen Besuch dort empfehlen. (Die Empfehlung ist so positiv, dass sie gekauft klingt, aber nein, ich bin einfach vollends zufrieden und möchte meine positive Erfahrung mit euch teilen.)

Simply a great restaurant in every respect. The food tastes good and is well seasoned. Staff is friendly and helpful and even if it is a bit small/cramped in some places, the rooms and the ambience are very enjoyable.

Rustig, mooie aankleding, vriendelijke bediening. Eten krijg je snel. Reserveren mogelijk, maar zijn ook genoeg zitplaatsen beschikbaar. Eten was lekker en de keus op de kaart is uitgebreid.

They made us wait 20mins with a reservation. Then took 1hr and 15mins to give us our food. Ridiculous.

In general a very good Indian. But you notice a difference in quality during the week to the weekend. When there is a lot going on, things quickly become hectic and unfortunately this also comes at the expense of service and quality.

If worst has name then it goes to this restaurant. Please stop fooling the local people in the name of authentic indian food. If you can’t make something well accept it and try to improve it rather than feeding rubbish to the people. People travelling comes with an expectation of good taste and authenticity and you spoil it all. A complete no go for this restaurant. Any who can prove if it is aloo paratha please take the reward from me. Check the pictures.

We ate there during the week. Apart from the stairs everything was great. We received a warm welcome and the food was delicious. We will definitely go again when we are back in Trier

Excellent food and beautiful ambience

I love the food. Finally some place where you get as spicy as you order.

This is the worst restaurant I have been lately. I made a reservation and specifically called them that we are coming with an infant and we are from Netherlands. The owner was talking in some weird language we don’t understand with us. It was not German or English. The waitress was really nice. There was no changing option in the bathroom for the baby that’s why we changed our baby in a sudden emergency situation in our seating place. Nobody even noticed or got bothered by it. Suddenly the owner was taking in that weird language again and was telling in Germany it is not allowed to change the baby in the restaurant. So weird and bad service the food was worse I don’t recommend the restaurant at all. It was hostile environment for us and the baby.

Wir waren zu dritt in diesem eigentlich recht hübschen Lokal. Die Begrüßung war durchwachsen: ER nicht wirklich freundlich, SIE sehr freundlich. Die Speisekarte ist viel zu umfangreich. Alleine um alles zu lesen braucht man schon sehr viel Zeit, um dann noch eine Wahl zu treffen noch mal viel länger. Lieber weniger und dann von guter Qualität. Meine Begleiter und ich entschieden uns für verschiedene Gerichte. Meines nannte sich "Lamb Vindaloo (Goa Special) Gebratene Lammfleischstücke mit Kartoffeln in einer pikanten Sahne-Soße gegart (scharf)" und kostete 13,50€, ein Preis, den man verschmerzen konnte, auch wenn ich die Hälfte meines Essens zurückgehen ließ. Das Fleisch war zerkocht, überhaupt war alles in diesem Gericht, das wie Gulasch aussah, ziemlich zerkocht. Der Geschmack? Nun, ich weiß nicht, wie indisches Essen normalerweise schmeckt, aber das hier war nicht meins. Als Beilage gab es Reis. War es wirklich Basmati? Außerdem Fladenbrot für uns drei, das wir aber nicht anrührten. Serviert wurde das Essen in kleinen Schalen, wobei ein Gericht so aussah wie das andere. Wir waren alle unzufrieden und beschlossen, bei nächsten Mal in Trier einen anderen Inder zu testen. Meine Freunde, die mehr Erfahrung min indischem Essen, z.T. in Indien selbst, waren mit mir einer Meinung, dass man da nicht mehr hin muss.

Totally full and loud. Tables very close together. Tablecloths pitted and dirty. Food just burnt and black. When asked, they said that was the case. We visited Indians often enough. It has never tasted so burnt.

There's a reason that this place has been up and running for so many years, or decades even. Owners are fantastically kind, accommodating and responsive. The food is delicious - obviously, they cater to European palates, but that is to be expected - it is as close to Indian food as you can expect in a German town. Sometimes you have to wait a little for the food, but I'd imagine this to be a good sign. We've been coming here for years and highly recommend this place!

Was ich hier erlebt habe, entspricht leider dem schlechtesten Klischee eines indischen Restaurants. Obwohl ich indisches Essen gerne mag. Die Tischdecke war schmutzig und die Toilette extrem dreckig. Diese Umstände lassen wenig Raum für Hoffnung, dass die Küche hier anders aussieht. Doch das Höchstmaß an Unverschämtheit war, als ich etwas Veganes bestellte und stattdessen Käse serviert bekam. Ich habe das Veterinäramt über die hygienischen Zustände informiert. Es ist für mich ein Rätsel, wie ein solches Lokal überhaupt überleben kann."

Unfortunately, what I experienced here corresponds to the worst cliché of an Indian restaurant. Although I do like Indian food. The tablecloth was dirty and the toilet was extremely dirty. These circumstances leave little room for hope that the kitchen will look different here. But the ultimate insolence was when I ordered something vegan and was served cheese instead. I informed the veterinary office about the hygienic conditions. It's a mystery to me how a place like this can even survive.

Very disappointed. A colleague of mine threw up as soon as he went out. Long wait and the food was so cheap, I honestly would have done better at home. I was hoping for more because everyone is talking about it.

Not go near that place terrible 😒 experience

A small Indian restaurant in an Art Nouveau building in Trier's beautiful Neustrasse. The food is cooked fresh every day, the level of spiciness can be varied and tastes simply heavenly. As Neustraße residents, we eat there regularly and wouldn't want to miss this small, authentic restaurant. A very clear recommendation!!

Decent food and service at a good price. A little bit odd that the masala chai didn’t have any spices in it, but it was still delicious! It’s a large dining room but can get busy on weekends, so it’s a good idea to reserve ahead of time.

Friendly staff but unacceptably long waiting time. Despite making a reservation, we were asked to come back after 20 minutes because it was still full and the guests hadn't left yet. Huh?! We had reservations! When we returned we also had to wait forever to get our table. Afterwards we had to wait for the food orders to be taken and ultimately to receive the food. We got the food after a total of one hour and 40 minutes. A drink was also forgotten. The restaurant didn't invite us for anything for the long wait and the staff didn't even apologize. In my opinion this is not okay.

A very nice restaurant with a cozy atmosphere despite it feeling a bit cramped. From the outside it looks rather inconspicuous but it's worth a visit.

Angesichts erstaunlich zahlreicher Restaurants in Trier mit erbärmlicher Küchenleistung muß man viel Geduld aufbringen auf der Suche nach einer Gaststätte, wo man gern auch ein zweites oder drittes Mal einkehren möchte. Ein solches habe ich nun endlich in dem indischen Restaurant Taj Mahal am südlichen Ende der Fußgängerzonen (200 bis 300 Meter von den Kaiserthermen entfernt) gefunden. Es ist geschmackvoll eingerichtet, der Service freundlich. Zunächst bekommt man gratis Pappadam mit drei Saucen -- eine nette Geste, die früher bei indischen Restaurants üblich war, heute aber keineswegs mehr selbstverständlich ist. Ich bestellte zunächst Mulligatawny, eine südindische Linsensuppe, die mir recht gut mundete und die sich geschmacklich deutlich von denen vieler anderer indischer Lokale unterschied. Es ist ja das Schöne bei indischen Angeboten, daß hier regionale Unterschiede noch eine gewisse Rolle spielen, während bei den meisten chinesischen, vietnamesischen und Thai-Restaurants gleichlautende Mahlzeiten fast ununterscheidbar gleichartig daherkommen. Die Portionen sind hier groß, meine zum Hauptgericht georderte Raita-Beilage war eine beachtliche Portion und ungemein schmackhaft. Als Spezialität des Hauses gilt hier das Gericht "Gosht Mughlai"-- angenehm zartes Lamm in einer sehr milden Sahne-Joghurt-Soße mit Cashewkernen. Das war von recht guter Qualität und gefiel mir ohne Einschränkung, die dazu gereichte Schüssel Reis habe ich nicht einmal zur Hälfte bewältigt. Satt und zufrieden: Beim nächsten Trier-Besuch weiß ich, wo ich essen gehe.

Best shop in Trier! All chicken dishes are recommended, always freshly prepared and super tasty. Service was also great, always friendly. Ambience is good, but could be a little better. As a drink I can highly recommend the Mango Lassi. The price is also good, for around €20 you get a main course and a drink, which also fills you up.

Delicious and authentic Indian food. You should especially try the house recommendations, but all the other curries are also very good! We have always ordered take away.

I frequent this place .its is really nice . The food is very good . As far as Indian/pakistani cuisine is concerned - its offers a variety of curries with lamb , chicken and other non vegetarian options . Vegetarian menu is however limited . The best part is that the naan bread and rice are complementary to dish ordered. I like the preparations- they are flavourful. The staff if friendly. One might not always find a place and at times getting a reservation can be tricky . But it is indeed the most Pocket friendly indeed Indian restaurant.

Have been eating here for many years. The food is always very tasty and portions sizes are generous. They cater for your spice preference and will always ask whether you prefer your dish, mild, medium, or spicy. Service can occasionally be a little slow when they're very busy but the owner and staff are always friendly and welcoming. Would recommend!

Dieses Restaurant ist mein Liebkingsrestaurant in Trier. Wenn ich Trier besuche, esse ich immer hier. Die Arbeitsnehmer sind immer sehr nett und gefällig. Das Restaurant wird am Wochenende immer beschäftigt werden, also ich empfehle eine Reservierung zu machen. Sehr empfehlenswer!!! This has been my favorite restaurant for many years. Erster Besuch war leider ein Flop! Das Essen war fad im Geschmack und glich eher einer Matschepampe. Wir hatten zwei verschiedene Gerichte mit Shrimps bestellt. Als das Essen kam, sahen beide Schalen fast gleich aus und die Bedienung konnte uns nicht sagen, welches Essen was war. Sie lief erstmal 5 Minuten weg um uns dann anschließend aufzuklären. Das dazu gereichte Fladenbrot hingegen war sehr gut. Das Ambiente wirkte nicht sehr einladend, glich eher einem Bahnhofsrestaurant und war sehr ungemütlich und laut. Zudem war es sehr kalt und wir überlegten uns, die Mäntel wieder anzuziehen. Alles in Allem kein guter Start für uns aber wir denken, dass wir einfach die falschen Gerichte ausgewählt haben. Die Bedienungen sind mehrfach an dem Abend mit sehr lecker aussehenden, gut duftenden Speisen an unserem Tisch vorbei gelaufen. Leider konnten sie uns nicht aufklären, welche Speisen das waren. Sehr Schade! Wir hätten dem Taj Mahal sonst gerne noch eine 2. Chance gegeben.

Was my first time coming here and it will be my last time coming. They take too long to attend to you and also the atmosphere is just so cold and with no music. In total we waited for over 45 minutes for the food. The serve was too busy talking to the other two workers.

Today we ate at Taj Mahal and we had a wonderful experience! First we had some nice appetizers to share and main courses were very flavorful. Also many vegan choices including nan. Compliments to the staff!

Seit Beginn an Kunde des Taj-Mahal. Ich wurde weder bei dem Geschmack des Essens noch bei dem Service enttäuscht. Preis/Leistung ist immer top! Für mich immer ein Besuch wert. Liebe Grüße an den Leiter des Restaurants, der uns seit Jahren immer bestens bedient.
