Delicious Pad Thai!!! Finally, a restaurant where the food tastes authentic.

We had three different dishes (chicken, duck, beef), and the verdict was the same across the board: The sauces were all delicious, but the meat was unfortunately very dry and tough. Not exactly cheap, about €15-20 per main course. One surprise was that if you want leftovers packed, it costs an additional €1.50, which isn't necessary at that price. Service was friendly, but our order was initially swapped with the next table (but it can happen). It was quite full, so reservations are recommended. I don't think I would necessarily come back...

Don't let the rustic look put you off. The food is great, and the value for money is excellent. I'd go back anytime!

What I ordered didn't come as described on the menu. It's a joke that Germans like a lot of sauce, and that's why there's so much sauce on the plate. THEN I'LL GO FOR GERMAN FOOD AND NOT THAI....

Second visit after a year. Was very impressed the first time round. Somehow this time the food portions have significantly shrunk so much, prices seemed higher and taste wasn’t as good as we have remembered. Dissatisfied and disappointed after the meal. Time to search for another Thai restaurant.

At Soong Hau, we had red curry with tofu and phad krapao. The curry tasted good, but there was very little tofu. The phad krapao was disappointing; it didn't taste anything like it does in Thailand and consisted of half of some kind of vegetable. The service was very friendly and attentive. Only 1 star for value.

For me, this is one of the last truly authentic Thai restaurants in Karlsruhe. Everything I've eaten there so far has been delicious and not a monotonous dish. The courtyard is very charming, especially in summer.

The food here tastes just as delicious as it does in Thailand. I felt like I was back on my last vacation in Thailand. We were both full and happy after the meal. I also really liked the courtyard and the lack of the usual Asian kitsch decor. I wholeheartedly recommend this place. I'll be coming here more often from now on. Kop Khun Ka!

I highly recommend this soup! Today's highlight! The soup itself is delicious, and the various ingredients are harmoniously matched, adding to the flavor! Unfortunately, this soup raised our expectations for the other dishes too high... In comparison, the other dishes were mediocre, and the rice was actually half-cooked... My boyfriend actually said that the half-cooked rice was crispy, with a unique taste, and it was quite delicious... There is an old grape vine in the small garden, and it is very comfortable to eat outdoors in this weather.

I love Thai and wanted to try a new restaurant again. I went there because of the good reviews. Unfortunately the food wasn't like that. The noodle soup was bland and my curry, which was supposed to be with coconut milk, didn't taste like coconut. The vegetables were a bit old and the duck was too dry and didn't taste fresh. Too bad.

Soong Hao in downtown Karlsruhe is a real highlight! The food is incredibly tasty, authentic and fresh. The selection is varied and it always tastes excellent. The atmosphere in the restaurant is very pleasant and cozy, perfect for a relaxing evening. The service is friendly and quick. Overall just great! Absolutely recommended and definitely 5 out of 5 stars!

We visited the restaurant because of the good reviews and were unfortunately disappointed. The selection of vegetarian dishes is rather small compared to other Thais. We've had worse Thai food in Germany, but also much better. The papaya salad is overpriced for the mini portion. We were served alternately by two gentlemen. One was nice and quick, his colleague was just quick but neither attentive, courteous nor polite. We then decided to leave quickly and, contrary to our original plan, not order dessert here.

Very tasty food! There were three of us and we had 3 different duck dishes - all great, the duck was nice and crispy and the individual level of spiciness was just right. Highly recommended!

The food was boring and really nothing special. In my Tom Kha Gai soup there were 4 pieces of chicken and 2 lime leaves, loveless. The mixed sweet and sour vegetables I ordered because of the snow peas didn't contain any. Overall I was disappointed. The ambience inside is no longer as interesting as its predecessor, but the beer garden is definitely still great in summer. Don't know yet if I'll come back again.

Roast duck was very dry and it's a shame to charge 22 euros for it. But the sauce was delicious. You can get a delicious roasted duck cheaply in an Asian snack bar.

The food is very mixed. Some dishes were tasty, others were missing a lot of the ingredients listed and didn't really taste good either. The portions are quite manageable. The service could be friendlier, the atmosphere is okay.

We were looking for an authentic Pad Thai. We had Pad Thai twice. Once with tofu and once with chicken. It was very tasty. With lime and a bit of conscience. It was a little spicier than usual. The others had masam curry and another curry. They were excited too. Service was very nice and accommodating. Restaurant, an old inn or something similar. We would love to come back.

I came here with my boyfriend, and we both had an amazing time. I grew up eating Thai food in the US and this place scratched all those comforting yummy itches I had missed being here in Germany. 11/10, WILL go again before my visit ends!

Absolutely fantastic Thai restaurant. Food is delicious and the service very friendly. We stayed in Karlsruhe for one night (on our way back home) and booked a table at the restaurant for dinner with our 2 children (9 and 4 years old). Spot on! We highly reccommend it and will definitelly be back whenever we're back in Karlsruhe. 👌

Kleines, thailändisches Restaurant, mit gutem und authentische Thaiküche. Nachdem das andere Lokal in Fußnähe zu meinem Hotel in Karlsruhe zu Ende des Monats schließt, habe ich nun dieses Thai Lokal gefunden und muss gestehen, hier ist es auch sehr gut, nur leicht teurer wie einem anderen Lokal. Der Som Tam ist sehr gut genauso wie die warmen Gerichte. Bin schon den zweiten Tag in Folge hier und komme auch wieder.

A small Thai restaurant looking like nothing but the food is excellent. There were just the owners working when we visited but they managed to keep everything working just fine with minimal waiting time. Our dishes were tasty and generously served. Prices extremely reasonable. Would recommend.

It was our first time at Soong Hau Restaurant. The atmosphere is rustic and resembles an old pub. But it has something! The service was very, very attentive and friendly. The spring rolls were excellent, the paneng curry was also very tasty. The meat was rich and buttery tender. The curry was very tasty and the spiciness was perfect. You can customize the level of spiciness. The only thing I would have liked was a little more lime leaves in the curry. We weren't charged for an extra portion of rice, which we thought was very fair. We will definitely come back and try other delicacies.

The restaurant is very cozy and not too big. The atmosphere simply appears more intimate and creates a homely feeling. The beer garden with its vines is perfect for the summer. The quality of the food was very good. Price/performance is more than fair considering how large some portions are. “The level of spiciness” you have is easy to understand. How many chili peppers should be in... So I don't understand how some people have problems with this. The cooking style is also typically original Thai. The spices and herbs are normal, which makes me even happier. It's probably not as colorful as some Asian restaurants that use European seasoning (so "Germanized" Drinks are classic, but what more could you want with a simple meal. If you ask, sometimes there are drinks off the menu. There is often a big crowd at lunchtime, so you should understand that you have to wait a little longer.

Im Februar hatte ich einen Tisch für zwei Personen in dem für seine authentisch zubereiteten Thaispezialitäten bekannten Restaurant Soong Hau in der Südstadt reserviert. Das Soong Hau liegt fußläufig knapp 5 Minuten vom altehrwürdigen Programmkino „Schauburg“ entfernt. Optimal gelegen, um vor dem Kinobesuch die im Netz sehr gut beleumundete Thaiküche von Choochan Duberny einmal auszuprobieren. Küchenchefin Duberny leitet das Lokal zusammen mit ihrem Mann Hans-Jürgen, der sich als Serviceleiter „symbadisch“ um seine Gäste kümmert. Kostenfreie Parkmöglichkeiten sind in der Karlsruher Südstadt ein seltenes Gut. Abhilfe schaffen da die nahegelegenen Parkhäuser des Badischen Staatstheaters und des Kongresszentrums. Wir waren mit der Straßenbahn unterwegs, was uns einen kleinen Spaziergang vom „Ettlinger Tor“ aus einbrachte. Das Innere des Thairestaurants sah mal gar nicht asiatisch aus. Die verklinkerten Wände, der in die Jahre gekommene Holzdielenboden und das einfache, aber keineswegs unbequeme Wirtshausmobiliar erinnerten eher an gutbürgerliche Zeiten. Die hatte der Laden wahrscheinlich vor dem Einzug der Dubernys in ausreichendem Maße erlebt. Choohan Duberny und ihr Mann Hans-Jürgen haben den etwas in die Jahre gekommenen Gastraum mit ein paar wenigen, auf den Fensterbänken und an den Wänden platzierten Accessoires so behutsam in Richtung Asien dekoriert, dass dies kaum auffällt. Zum Kneipenflair passte dann auch die Wahl unserer Getränke. Mein Kollege unterstützte mit einer Flasche Rothaus Tannzäpfle (0,5l für 4,50 Euro) die Badische Staatsbrauerei, während ich gerne zum gut gekühlten Hacker Pschorr Kellerbier aus der Bügelflasche (0,5l für 4,80 Euro) griff. Ein solch wohlgehopfter Auftakt verlangte nach ein paar deftigen Startern. Um dieser Absicht nachzukommen, ließen wir uns zunächst eine aus dem überschaubaren Vorspeisenangebot zusammengestellte, gemischte Knusper-Platte liefern. Das in der Karte als „Soong Hau Vorspeise“ (16 Euro) bezeichnete Potpourri an gebrutzelten Asia-Snacks bestand aus einer großzügig bemessenen Portion altbekannter „Wokgefährten“. Wir waren positiv überrascht. Das kross frittierte Fingerfood war anscheinend selbstgemacht und kam nicht wie leider so häufig aus dem ewigen Eis. Auch fiel es nicht besonders fettig aus, was auf sorgfältiges Entfetten (mit Gitter oder Küchenkrepp) schließen ließ. Die mit Hackfleisch gefüllten Wan Tans nannten sich hier „Giew Thod“ und krachten bei jedem Bissen. Das knusprige Frittiervergnügen für zwei hungrige Cineasten wurde von zwei gängigen Saucen (süß-sauer und Erdnuss) adäquat begleitet. Dippen gehört ja schließlich zum Handwerk dazu. Die vorher mit Curry-Kokos-Marinade behandelten Satay-Spieße begeisterten mit ihrem tollen Zitronengrasaroma. Bei den saftigen Frühlingsrollen wurden fein geschnittenes Gemüse, Mu-Err-Pilze, Hackfleisch, Glasnudeln und Sojasprossen in Filoteigblätter gepackt und dann im Wok frittiert. Das Ergebnis war zwar außen etwas bröselig, aber innen verdammt lecker. Einziger Kritikpunkt an dieser handwerklich einwandfrei auf die Platte gebrachten Auswahl an „Knusperkeiten“ war ihre Portionsgröße. Da wären auch locker drei Personen gut vorgesättigt zu ihren Hauptgerichten übergegangen. Aber vielleicht würden diese ja etwas reduzierter ausfallen – so zumindest unsere Hoffnung nach getätigter Plattenputzaktion. Doch das war wohl eher Wunschdenken unsererseits. Sowohl die gebratene Ente auf rotem Curry namens „Gäng Ped Nor Mai“ (20,90 Euro) meines Kollegen als auch mein gebratenes Hühnerfleisch mit Bohnen, Paprika, Pilzen, Chili und Thai-Basilikum (15,90 Euro) waren nicht gerade schüchtern portioniert. Keine Ahnung, warum ich bei der Bestellung meines „Gai Phat Gra-Pau“ leichtfertig Gaumenmut mit brennender Thaischärfe verwechselte. Eines stand bereits nach dem ersten Bissen fest: ich sollte meinen Wunsch nach Rachenfeuer übererfüllt bekommen. Aber wer sich im Soong Hau verschärfte Bedingungen wünscht, der muss auch mit den kulinarischen Konsequenzen umgehen können. Mein Tischgenosse lobte unterdessen sein vortranchiertes, über dem roten Gemüsecurry thronendes Geflügel, das nicht nur durch seine kross gebratene Haut, sondern vor allem durch sein saftiges Fleisch überzeugte. Eine Chance auf Komplettverzehr des röschen Vogels hatte er dennoch nicht. Dafür lag einfach zu viel Entenbrust auf seiner rechteckigen Servierplatte. Außerdem war da ja auch noch das knackig gewokte Gemüse (Paprika, Bambussprossen und Thai-Basilikum), das unter dem „Asia-Adler“ in reichlich roter Currysauce badete, und zusammen mit dem separat gelieferten Duftreis auch verzehrt werden wollte. Auch ich mühte mich nach bestem Gewissen, mein mit zupackender Sauce und diversen kleinen roten Teufelchen gewürztes Hühnerklein verputzt zu bekommen. Es schmeckte so viel besser als das mit angezogener Scharfbremse ein paar Stunden zuvor beim Vietnamesen servierte Curry. Bohnen, Pilze, Bambus und Paprika hatten genau den richtigen Biss. Den aromatischen Rest erledigten Knoblauch, Zwiebel, Chili und Thai-Basilikum in exakt austarierter Menge und Zusammensetzung. Huhn und Reis traten angesichts des feurig-würzigen Arrangements eher im Hintergrund als Texturgeber mit Sättigungsfunktion auf, was nicht weiter schlimm war. Das kühle Kellerbier aus München musste die doch arg in Wallung geratenen Papillen von Zeit zu Zeit wieder etwas besänftigen. Auch der tadellos unter Dampf gekochte Duftreis sorgte für ein wenig gustatorische Entspannung am Gaumen. Keine Ahnung wie, aber ich schaffte es gerade so, diese „heiße“ Hühnerplatte gänzlich zu vertilgen. In diesem authentischen Thailokal – durchaus vergleichbar mit dem ebenfalls auf aromatische Frische und mutige Würze setzenden Restaurant „Thai-Orchid“ aus der Adlerstraße – würde ich jederzeit wieder aufschlagen. Allerdings würde ich mich mit der „Standard-Ausführung“ bei den in der Karte als „scharf“ ausgewiesenen Speisen zufriedengeben. Allein schon um keine unnötigen Gaumenkriegsschauplätze zu eröffnen. Auch den frisch frittierten Querschnitt durchs krosse Vorspeisenprogramm würde ich auf ein paar wenige knusprige Teigtaschen oder ein paar im Teigmantel ausgebackene Garnelen reduzieren. Denn überfuttern muss sich ja wirklich niemand. Wer sich also vom etwas altbacken anmutenden Ambiente nicht abschrecken lässt und statt konfektionierter panasiatischer Massenware lieber ehrlich gewokte Thaiküche aus fachkundiger Frauenhand bevorzugt, dem sei das Soong Hau in der Südstadt schärfstens empfohlen. Wie in unserem Fall lässt sich dieser anregende Abstecher nach Fernkost prima mit einem Besuch des Programmkinos „Schauburg“ oder des noch näher gelegenen Badischen Staatstheaters kombinieren.

Service is good, fast, attentive. Prices are rather high for Asian cuisine. Unfortunately, with the last visit we were no longer convinced by the food. The thin “sauce” tasted bland, there were no spices in the dish that you would normally expect from Thai food. The drink prices are very high...perhaps "normal" for Karlsruhe.

It was our first time eating there. The taste of the food was good, unfortunately we were not informed how the food was made, we were only told there were five strengths 1-5. The food was therefore extremely spicy. Unfortunately the service wasn't quick and a bit unfriendly. Price performance is okay. Ambience is also okay.

We were able to sit outside. The Thai restaurant is small and intimate. There is no dessert, but there is an otherwise extensive selection and friendly advice. We were all very satisfied.

Eine sehr gute Thailändische authentische Küche. Sehr gut gewürzt und wirklich etwas besonderes. Dort wird zum Beispiel frischer,grüner Pfeffer in den Speisen verwendet, was zu einem besonderen Geschmack führt. Freundliche Bedienung in familiärer Atmosphäre. Schöner Garten im Innenhof. Ein Besuch lohnt für alle Freunde Thailändischer Küche.

First of all, the food is pleasantly spicy and well prepared. If you really want spicy, you can get that too. It is also asked explicitly. The prices are sometimes quite high, but if you want good food, this is the place to be.

Sind auf der spontanen Suche nach einem Restaurant auf das Soon Hau gestoßen. Sehr freundlicher und wissender Service und sehr gute und (für uns als Laien) authentische Küche. Die Einrichtung ist eher einfach, nicht schicki und erinnert vom Mobiliar her eher an ein Wirtshaus. Die Atmosphäre war ungezwungen, gemütlich, der Laden voll.

Leckere, authentische Thai Küche. Alle Gerichte werden frisch zubereitet. Das Phat Thai Je (thailändisches Nationalgericht) ist der Hammer. Die Atmosphäre der ehemaligen Weinstube ist noch erhalten, aber mit Thailändischen Akzenten versehen und lädt zum verweilen ein.

Von außen und von der Einrichtung her sehr unscheinbar, wurden wir drinnen davon überrascht, dass wir gerade noch so einen Platz für eine Stunde haben konnten, weil alles reserviert war, was ja schon ansich ein gutes Zeichen ist. Das Essen hat uns dann nochmal überrascht, denn von den Frühlingsrollen, die nicht nach der üblichen Tiefkühlware aussahen, bis zu den Hauptspeisen war alles absolut lecker. Die Ente war die knusprigste, die ich bisher in einem asiatischen Restaurant gegessen habe. Wir waren sicherlich nicht das letzte Mal hier! Update nach mehreren Besuchen: einfach total lecker, wir kommen immer wieder gerne immer hier her!

Wir waren sehr positiv überrascht. Essen war Sehr gut vom Geschmack, die Menge ebenso. Ja es dauert etwas lange bis das Essen kommt AAAABER das zeigt das es frisch zubereitet wird und genauso schmeckt es auch.! Frisch.! Der Kellner war genauso gut, er war die ganze zeit da aber man hat ihn nicht bemerkt. Also wir kommen definitiv wieder. Das Essen dort hat sich mehr als gelohnt. Wir hatten die vorspeisenplatte für 2 pers. + Hauptgang Ente mit nudeln anstatt reis & den Fisch + 3 Bier (0.5l) und haben 70€ bezahlt. Ja viel geld aber dafür das man wirklich satt war und es mit frischen zutaten zubereitet wird ist der Preis gerechtfertigt und sehr fair. Es gibt nur einen einzigen Punkt wo ich persönlich meckern kann, das Ambiente innen drinnen. Das geht besser. Wir haben draußen gesessen und dort war es gemütlich chillig. Alles in allem wir kommen definitiv wieder.!!!

Ich war schon öfter in Thailand und zum Teil mehrere Monate am Stück in Südostasien.....das Restaurant kommt am nächsten an die Thai Küche wie im richtigen Thailand ran. Sehr authentisch! Ich werde jetzt regelmäßig kommen.

Wir hatten Pad Thai und ein zweites Essen bestellt (ich erinnere mich nicht mehr was). Das Essen war ok, nichts überragendes, aber auch nicht grottenschlecht. Der Service war sehr freundlich.
