I haven’t eaten such expensive and very mediocre food for a long time! The steak was dry, tough and not tasty. Even I can make it better at home 🤷‍♀️ The Wiener schnitzel was better than the steak... The beer is good.

Very cozy, appealing atmosphere, friendly service. Unfortunately the dishes didn't come as ordered. Spaetzle instead of cheese spaetzle, entrecote almost fried instead of medium rare, the spaetzle were almost cold, the remaining dishes were at most lukewarm. Instead of French dressing, the salad came with house dressing. In terms of taste, the dishes were okay, and the portion size was sometimes very manageable compared to the price. The prices are above average, the service is unfortunately below average, we cannot recommend the restaurant. Any change! every extra request! For the menu, ketchup and mayo are charged extra. That's not possible at these prices, where is the idea of ​​service here?

Service and ambience ok. Salt the soup too much. Flädle colorless. Maultaschen in the best canteen quality. Spaetzle too mushy. The Viennese were very good and of course the beer too. Why can't you make simple dishes good 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷‍♀️?

Great ambience, nice and authentic staff, delicious food and extremely good beer! We can only recommend this restaurant! The price-performance ratio is completely reasonable and you get very full! The food is fresh and perfectly prepared. The waiting time is optimal and the waiters were extremely friendly. The great and traditional furnishings invite you to linger! Gladly again!

Worth a visit, cozy atmosphere in the heart of the city

The Palmscher Bau is highly recommended, we were registered with a group of 22 people and everyone was still able to do it Order à la carte. The food came quickly and everyone was able to eat almost at the same time. The onion roast is highly recommended. Everyone was very satisfied with their menus and would recommend the Palmscher Bau. The waiters do a great job and are very attentive.

I ate here today because I'm in the area on business. The onion roast roast I had was one of the best I've eaten recently. The dessert was also very tasty. There was absolutely nothing to complain about in terms of service. Super friendly and attentive. The atmosphere is very inviting, really rustic and cozy. Went to the restaurant for lunch, it is centrally located in Esslingen with a beautiful, large beer garden. Service was friendly, the food from the lunch menu was a grilled plate with pork loin, fire sausage, bacon and rosemary potatoes... The pork loin was as thin as a schnitzel, the sausage was okay, the potatoes were good... the barbecue sauce was untouched... The food was okay, unfortunately lukewarm, the plate where the food was served was cold...

Restaurant and terrace! Special atmosphere and ambience, a nice address for anyone who actually wants to eat and drink something quiet and relaxed! Always, even in winter, very beautiful and very well maintained, everything is in perfect order. As you can see, a plus point for decoration and presentation! Food is of the best quality and very well prepared and also tastes very tasty. Personally, I always had a great time there and can say, congratulations! There is a lunch menu every day and we were very happy and can invite everyone to a very good experience. Prices are reasonable and OK, quality for dishes,, upper floor,,! Terrace is open and from there you can feel exactly like you are in a restaurant, very nicely decorated and with your own bar. A year ago I wrote a review that the waiters are very rude August 2023 I come to update my review August 2024 IF YOU CAN, better look for another place!! We booked the same day so that there wouldn't be a problem like last year (that they didn't want to serve us because everything was reserved, which was not true.) When we arrived a waiter told us to sit wherever we wanted, when we wanted to sit with a view of the canal, the same waiter from a year ago, a tall man with glasses (already big because there are two glasses) told us to leave that table. It was not reserved for us because we were only 3 people. We tried to explain to him that we had made a reservation and that they told us we could sit wherever we wanted and in a very despotic way he replied no!! He didn't even want to listen to our comments and just turned around and left!! In the end we changed tables because my family didn't want problems. But my question is why put up with the rudeness of the staff? You are going to pay for a service, I am not going to ask for food to be given to me. The service is terrible Waiter who served us with a very rude and arrogant attitude, I say IF YOU DON'T WANT TO WORK IN CUSTOMER SERVICE THEN LOOK FOR ANOTHER JOB. At first I didn't want to go because of the bad experience a year ago. However, my family insisted on giving him a second chance. I wanted to visit a Swabian restaurant in Baden-Württemberg. Because there is no comparable cuisine in my state of Hesse. The food in this restaurant tastes very good. But none of the waiters were German. Only Indians and Asians (that's just my guess). A bit strange and disappointing for tourists. They couldn't understand me even if I spoke German. I have no problem speaking German to Germans anywhere else. There are so many good restaurants here. You can try them all.

You have to say that it is a very nice beer garden in Esslingen's old town. I had a schnitzel that was very, very dry and not really big, even though I had the large one for €24!!! had ordered. There was also a handful of fries. Ketchup costs €1.50, which is pretty cheeky at €24 for a bit of schnitzel. The schnitzel is not fried in the pan but fried in the deep fryer. The salad was a ready mix. All in all, the price/performance ratio is not right at all. Unfortunately. My wife ate beef liver, which was probably very good.

We visited the restaurant for a company party and the large group (over 40 people) were looked after well and quickly. Both the Swabian sauerbraten with spaetzle and the warm chocolate cake with a liquid center tasted really good and the portions were just right. Seat cushions would be comfortable outside, but otherwise there are no criticisms.

Was very funny. The spaetzle wasn't really my thing. They tasted a bit floury. But maybe that's a nonsense thing. The salad was great. The drinks were nice and cold too. The only point of criticism: Diet Coke is far too small and the price/performance ratio is inappropriate. The service was consistently friendly. Gladly again.

The price/performance of the food is at least €5 too high. The restaurant doesn't even dare to post the prices online. When you're eating outside, it's a real plague of flies and wasps. Real “trash” flies. You're more concerned with defending the food than eating it. Actually, I should still get a voucher for it. You should get off your high horse and concentrate on what's important again.

Location is great, beer garden was almost empty but somehow all the tables were reserved?? After 1.5 hours it was still almost empty. Food was ok in terms of taste but somehow expensive. Atmosphere would perhaps be better if me and my colleagues from India had not been assigned to the entrance because "everything was reserved" even though the beer garden was almost empty from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. Never here again.

This review is a few years old, but for some reason I had to update it. The boss personally welcomed us. The terrace looked full, but he said he had a place for us. After waiting for 10 minutes (I wanted to leave), we were assigned a table. We had to wait forever for the tickets and drinks order. Since the restaurant advertises their Maultaschen, I ordered these. I have never eaten worse Maultaschen. I reported this to the staff and was met with a lack of understanding. My plate was cleared and I received the bill. The food is completely overpriced. Price performance poor. I didn't want to pay, but my companion was too stupid and took over. We took a day trip to Esslingen and came across this place by chance while looking for a nice restaurant/beer garden! The atmosphere in the beer garden is idyllic and really beautiful under the old chestnut trees on hot summer days! We have nothing negative to say about the service. Unfortunately for dinner... My husband had a schnitzel (pork) with fries that was ok, but the meat tasted a lot like “pork”, you have to like it but it was good. I had veal schnitzel with spaetzle and cream of champions with salad Since it was on the schnitzel menu, I assumed that I would also get a breaded schnitzel... you could perhaps also write about that, since the other schnitzels on the menu are all breaded... ok then a veal schnitzel with cream sauce poured over the already very fatty one came A light sauce (cream) was poured into the sauce, the spaetzle were soaked in butter or oil and the “champions” were simply black??? The salad (side salad) consisted of more than half tomatoes marinated in oil and avocado on top of that, then oil again? Unfortunately it wasn't anywhere... Unfortunately an absolute disappointment. The restaurant has a great location, but that's about it. Completely overpriced for extremely poor quality. In addition, changes cost an absolutely unjustified surcharge - fries instead of fried potatoes cost €2.50 extra even though the veal schnitzel already cost over €30. The staff isn't particularly friendly either. Really a disappointment for what was actually such a great location

We saw the beer garden from the water wheels and decided to eat there. We were served relatively quickly, about a 5 minute wait with the beer garden almost completely full. Drinking came very quickly. For dinner we had the melted Maultaschen. It's a manageable portion. 1 1/2 Maultaschen with a few melted onions. Add about 1 leaf of iceberg lettuce that has been drowned in salad dressing. The potato salad with it was okay.

Burger was delicious, nice beer garden. That was it. I have worked in the catering industry and have daily contact with customers in sales, so I have a lot of understanding if something goes wrong. But what was going on here during our visit was really underground! The service had no concept/routine and even though the beer garden was only half full at the best of times, almost nothing worked. Eternal waiting times were inevitable... not to mention all the other things that went wrong. Our waitress topped it all with her confusion and unfriendliness, even though we were still considerate at all times. And if, out of 15 meals, a meal is more than an hour overdue, questions are probably allowed and should be taken seriously and not dismissed as unkindly as happened to us several times that evening! The other service employees looked away instead of perhaps intervening. The beer garden operator should urgently rethink his service concept. Thirsty people at all the tables in our service area who were only able to order 1 drink twice after staying for about 2.5-3 hours. All other orders were either forgotten or rudely rejected. The prices are more in the upper segment for home-style cooking. Quality and taste, however, are mediocre. Service, especially from our staff, is virtually non-existent. If at the end there is still grumbling for no service and no tip, that's the bottom of the barrel. It's a shame about the beautiful beer garden and the beautiful restaurant, but we will avoid it in the future.

The location is great, you sit very nicely. Staff is very attentive and friendly. The food wasn't good. The melted Maultaschen (1.5 instead of the previous 2) came on a small dessert plate and were dry, the small portion of potato salad tasted like the refrigerator and the side (iceberg) salad was carelessly torn. The price-performance ratio is absolutely no longer right.

Beautiful beer garden with old trees. Great location on the Neckar with lots of space. The service was very friendly, but it took longer for me to be noticed. The Strasbourg sausage salad was ok, just very blandly seasoned. If I want to go out for a drink in Esslingen again, I'll be happy to come back, but I probably won't necessarily go out to eat.

First, the food (that it came with) was good. It's lovely to sit in the beer garden...that's it. We were there pre-registered with a group of 20 people. So far it worked. We then had to wait 20 minutes until “our” service came. Then we could order the drinks. Didn't get 1 drink. Demand was very rudely rejected. Ordered food. A meal didn't come. When asked again, a very impudent “I passed everything on” well, it’s still missing. After 20 minutes I checked again and then “they still want it”. 20 minutes later it came quite reluctantly. Ordering drinks in between is almost impossible. Either our waitress wasn't there (we weren't allowed to order from others) or, "Now I'm just going to pick up some food, I'll come back later" of course, we just didn't come. Yes, and groups usually pay individually, which in turn provoked a very rude reaction from the waitress. We should appear individually, but please not all at once. One too many meals on the order is probably the one that didn't come. Billed for salad that wasn't ordered etc. All in all - you just don't feel comfortable as a guest and you don't even dare to order. That's not how it works. I was definitely there last time and will pass on this opinion. Oh and finally, as a waitress you really don't have to complain if you don't get a tip after such a service. She did that too.

It could have been so beautiful. After a not so great experience in the beer garden some time ago, we wanted to give it another chance. The 4 of us waited a full 20 minutes for a waitress to take our order. There were two service staff walking around there, but they were not authorized to take orders. We didn't get a look from the other waitress, even though we had been waiting at the table for so long without anything. 10 minutes after our order was taken, the drinks came to the table. However, only 2 out of 4 drinks, the others would still take time, for whatever reason. After another 10 minutes we went personally to the counter to ask, and after 5 minutes the last 2 drinks finally arrived. There were guests sitting next to us at the table who were also waiting to order something. They had been waiting for quite a while too. When she made her presence known, she was simply told in a sharp tone, "Yes, you are welcome to order something, but there are 5 other guests in front of you first." They then got up and left. You can't treat guests like that. It should be noted that the beer garden was not yet half full. It's a shame, but it was probably the last visit there for us. Certainly still a point of contact for tourists, but no longer for us as residents.

Incredibly beautiful beer garden, with two time-honored chestnut trees, it's very pleasant to sit here, especially when it's hot. You can look at the Neckar Canal from above. The food and the Schwaben Bräu on tap were excellent, really tasty. 5 stars is still one too few. 😋👍🏻

Nice atmosphere, attentive waiters. Portion size quite small for the prices, anything extra costs extra. Everything was very salty, no side dishes.

Viennese schnitzel laced with tough tendons and served with warmed fried potatoes. Cost more than €31.00. No regrets, no discount, nothing. I've been coming to the Palmscher Bau every now and then for 45 years and now I'm really disappointed.

Nice ambience by the water... food... well it's ok. The spaetzle was very bland in taste and dry. The sauces nothing extraordinary.

Originally from Esslingen we went here for dinner last night. While the atmosphere is still nice the quality of food has deteriorated massively and it’s more a mass production of food now than genuine swabian quality. Come here for a drink and enjoy the atmosphere but avoid the food.

This is our third time here and every time the service is extremely slow. Today, however, we were charged extra for ketchup, even though the meal had french fries. Additionally, I ordered a side of mushroom gravy, to which they charged 2 different fees….one for gravy and one more the mushrooms inside the gravy. The beautiful view isn’t worth slow service and ridiculous extra fees. I questioned the fees and the waiter was extremely rude and unyielding, not caring that the customer was unhappy. There are much nicer places to eat around that won’t take advantage of customers.

The food was subpar for the price charged. The pork knuckle warmed up, ready-made sauce and the dumplings not loose at all. Really didn't taste good. Plus unfriendly service. The nice location doesn't help either. That's why it was completely empty in the beer garden on a sunny day. I'm never coming back.

We were in the beer garden. It's on a terrace, it's really very comfortable. The beer was delicious too. The 2 stars deducted are because of the older lady who served us. We arrived during the week at around 8:30 p.m., after most people had had dinner and it wasn't particularly busy anymore. We sat at a table on the edge from which we had a nice view of the canal. Then the waitress came and asked for our order. After we ordered 3 beers and nothing to eat, she said in a very indignant tone: "Now you sit down at one of the most beautiful tables here and don't order anything to eat, man!". How can you treat customers so badly and make them feel so unwelcome? She was also unfriendly the rest of the evening, not only to us but also to the guests at the next table. In the end we each had two beers and she also complained about what she thought was too low a tip. I would recommend everyone to think twice about going to the beer garden as long as that person is working there. It's really not pleasant to drink beer there in a relaxed manner when you're more or less told that you're not wanted there.

We chose the restaurant by chance and it was definitely worth it. The weather was really nice and suitable, we sat outside in the beer garden. Very pleasant and cozy. The service was friendly and colleagues were often at our table. In terms of price, we also found everything OK compared to the center of Stuttgart.

This was my third time in the Palmschen Bau and I was really impressed with everything from the start. The ambience, the food and, above all, the service are outstanding...especially Babs, who served us on each of our visits to this beautiful beer garden, deserves praise. She impresses with her friendliness and positive charisma from the first 'hello'; takes orders without making a note (and everything came to the table correctly) and is always nearby without being intrusive. In short: Babs does a great job!!!! She alone deserves 5 stars ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️! Not to be forgotten is the diverse menu and the lovely ambience. We'll definitely be back 🤩!

The food was good, I order the grilled fried chicken breast salad, and sanwald hefeweizen beer which was delicious. but the atmosphere and the location was so calming and you can't go wrong with!

Unfortunately not family friendly. A children's schnitzel (!) for 15€ without anything (should you eat that dry?)! Each extra ingredient is another 1.50 - 2.50 (i.e. fries instead of spaetzle, ketchup +1.00 or sauce +2.50). That's the trick: only offer schnitzel with spaetzle, and charge everything else extra. In the end we paid €19 per child. For a mini schnitzel and a handful of fries. Impudence!!! Are you crazy? As if the adult plates (€25 for Schniposa - not even breaded) weren't already expensive enough! Once and never again! Price/performance doesn't fit at all.

I went to Palmscher Bau to eat my very first German Schweinshaxen. I have eaten some Haxen before at home in Texas and I was very excited to taste the original. Unfortunately, I felt a bit sick afterwards. That was not the authentic German experience I was looking for. The best thing about the restaurant is the scenic beer garden.

Had a very tasty meal here...falafel bowl...a taste explosion in your mouth!! Delicious!

I was there last weekend with my family and friends from abroad, not for the first time but definitely for the last time. The food was better and the taste wasn't really satisfactory. The service (waiter) was very unfriendly and impolite. There really wasn't much going on in the beer garden at 1 p.m. All in all, the place (ambience) is nice both in winter and summer, only the waiter really messed it up. What a shame!

If the service staff were great, it wouldn't fail because of the senior "head waiter". The freshness of the food leaves something to be desired, especially the salad - considering the price. The service staff would collect a tip if the waiter did not refuse to do so with the words: “You need it more!” for a bill over €100. Incompetence and arrogance seem to be the order of the day! Waitress Barbara is also 1a = competence, service and friendliness like a book!

Absolute tourist rip-off! Fried Maultaschen with egg was an omelet with 5 slices of Maultaschen. The other portions were also far too small and therefore far too expensive. After the entire day of traveling, we wanted to sit down and have lunch at this place, the waiter let us sit for around 15 minutes, and when we lost patience and called him to order the food, he came and gave us a lecture on how we are supposed to sit and enjoy each other company and that he will come to us when he wants to. How we were the only ones that called him in the entire place (?!?! I guess the proper etiquette is to be left at the waiter's mercy?) We were stunned and literally without a reply, had a sip of beer and quickly left the place. We definitely did not come there to be shamed and yelled at for wanting to eat as soon as possible. Very rude and entitled man, we will definitely not be returning.

Unfortunately not recommended. Our visit here was spontaneous and the first impression of the guest room was very positive. A really nice room with a 100% feel-good factor. No matter how careful the choice of decoration in the dining room is, no emphasis seems to be placed on the quality and taste of the food. The two of us ordered 3 main courses and were surprisingly disappointed. The taste of our cheese spaetzle was, for me as a Swabian, embarrassing, bland, dry and tasteless. The fried potatoes had been lying in their fat for a while and were warmed up briefly. The side salad was actually quite good until I found the schlontzy cucumbers from yesterday and I completely lost my appetite. I didn't want to complain because it was definitely brought down and because I've already complained about our non-carbonated specials. And that makes me a bit uncomfortable anyway... The service was friendly but unfortunately not too attentive. You can really save €77.80 for fun here…

Another tip for future visitors: On days when the restaurant is well-attended, it is advisable to skip the appetizer. The waiting times then become disproportionately long, which can affect the overall experience. A particularly critical point is the billing process. It is recommended to explicitly request the bill and to check it carefully, as the billing unfortunately gives rise to skepticism. This is an aspect that urgently needs improvement in order to gain customers' trust. In conclusion, the restaurant has considerable room for improvement in several areas. Very nice quaint restaurant! We came spontaneously. There were 10 adults and 3 dogs! We were welcomed very warmly and friendly! Food was great and service too! Rarely have we experienced something so great :)! I can only recommend

We only ordered salad and knuckle and they were 10 We were first served by a waiter and then served by a very nice girl, both of them.

We've been coming here every December for 10 years with 20 people, now it's over. We had to pay the bill twice. The last guest suddenly had an open item of €300 again. What he has to pay. This is how we were ripped off...

Nice restaurant in the heart of Esslingen. However, very crowded on Saturday lunchtime. Food comes very quickly, but could definitely be better.
