The restaurant is located directly and centrally in Mainz's city center. Outside, next to the entrance, you can view the menu and the current lunch specials. The restaurant offers a variety of large and small tables, both in the main room and the side room. There are also plenty of tables available outside, with parasols. The restaurant was well-attended, with a good and pleasant atmosphere. The waitress came to the table quickly with the menu and a friendly greeting. I ordered fish with boiled potatoes and a side salad, along with a Sprite. The drink arrived promptly. The food was a good portion and tasted very good. The waitress was very attentive, checking twice to see if everything was OK and if I enjoyed the food. Overall, I was very satisfied and will return.

It seems to have lost its former appeal. The schnitzels tasted of old oil and the place looks a little depressing. The waiter seemed uninterested but was efficient and smile less.

The restrooms are clean and tidy. The ambiance is a bit dated, but that's perfectly fine for downtown Mainz. Unfortunately, the food isn't particularly recommendable; the side salad is still good, but the schnitzels are simply too greasy and fried in far too much oil. Unfortunately, the quality of the food doesn't match the price-performance ratio, and so I have to deduct two stars. But that's just my personal experience. I'll definitely be back, but I won't be eating schnitzel again; perhaps the other food is better.

SPAGHETTI SHOCK AT THE BRAUHAUS (ZUR SONNE) – WHERE FOOD POISONING IS NOT FAR AWAY Sometimes you think a brewery is a haven of hops, heart, and a sense of home. But here, it's clearly a training camp for patience, stomachs, and nerves! The waiters – always with an expression on their faces as if I'd personally canceled their vacation rental in Rimini – seemed both unfriendly and overwhelmed. Orders were lost, as were smiles. The food eventually arrived, but the smell immediately betrayed: this wasn't a culinary masterpiece, but merely the echo of old fat, probably simmering in the pan since the turn of the millennium. My spaghetti – ordered in naive trust – turned out to be an archaeological excavation between whole garlic cloves and onion-like stalks the thickness of a pencil. The fear of spontaneous food poisoning was so great that I sent the portion back before it could finally plunge me into culinary abyss. The end of the story? A hotel stay with painful sessions on the porcelain throne, which offered more drama than any crime scene. The hotel's sanitary facilities? A chapter in themselves: dingy, unpleasant, and as if that weren't enough, a smelly porcelain praline sat enthroned on the back of the toilet seat. Yes, and to be fair, the beer selection was really good. A small ray of hope in a sea of ​​gastronomic desolation. 1 out of 5 stars—and that star belongs exclusively to the beer, which is probably the only reason this establishment hasn't been converted into an escape room scenario yet.

Unfortunately, the Brauhaus zur untergehenden Sonne (Brauhaus of the Setting Sun) is also a lost cause. And this despite the variety of beers, including those from southern Germany. The deep-fried schnitzels were dripping with grease. The soggy breading was barely browned. The fried potatoes were greasy, some blackened, and some not even cooked at all. They weren't seasoned. The salad was drenched in dressing from a bucket and accordingly soft. The waiters were absent. Drinks we ordered later weren't brought to our table. Our complaints about the food were accepted without comment. Afterward, the table was cleared without comment. I've never written a review on Google before, but after the worst dining experience of my life, I had to leave one here. Anyone who gives this place more than one star has truly upset taste buds. Ugh! This place isn't even suitable as a toilet. P.S. After this visit, our group had to use the bathroom in our apartment for extended sessions!

Some of the fried potatoes were burnt. The waitress was overwhelmed and forgot our orders. The food was canned. The toilet was filthy.

Disgusting! A food inspector should come by here. The restrooms were absolutely filthy and unusable. Service was practically nonexistent. We sent back all the dishes. Stay well away from this tourist trap!

My all-time favorite airline layover. Chicken Schnitzel with peppercorn gravy and Rosti potatoes are out of this world. (AKA Delta Schnitzel)

It was our first time at the restaurant. The seating is cozy, and the place has good draft beer. The food was rather poorly presented, and the meat was unfortunately far too raw. I would limit it to just one visit. But it's perfectly fine for a drink and a seat.

Well, run-of-the-mill, but nothing more. 2.5 stars. Every furniture store has comparable schnitzels. It's filling, but it's not a real treat or a culinary delight. Bottom line: you can do it, but you don't have to.

Very good brewery cuisine, friendly, attentive and fast service

The first time, the schnitzel was amazing. This experience led us back a few days later, but our expectations were severely disappointed. The schnitzel was stringy, tough, and incredibly oily. A real shame. But the young waitress is a top-notch person, just what you'd expect.

Fast and friendly service unfortunately couldn't make up for the negative aspects of our visit yesterday. The furniture outside the restaurant blends seamlessly with the cuisine. Part of the reason for our visit was nostalgic memories of a traditional Mainz restaurant, which, however, was a profound disappointment. The schnitzel we ordered from the deep fryer, with a greasy coating, was served quickly but carelessly with a couple of fries and salad. The meat was quite tough and dry. The salad and its dressing were also not particularly flavorful. The quantity was sufficient, but this doesn't matter given the quality offered, as you don't really feel like eating everything anyway. For me, it was my last visit to this former Mainz institution.

Very tasty in the middle of Mainz

Four of us went there. Everyone had something different. Unfortunately, everyone was very disappointed with the quality and preparation. On the positive side, however, the portions were very large. Unfortunately, the taste and appearance weren't great. Very bland. Side dishes like croquettes or fries aren't recommended.

Quaint old brewery / restaurant

Schnitzel is served plain, without breading, a rarity. Fried potatoes were very good, the salad was fresh, with oil and vinegar on request. The portions were filling, the service was prompt and efficient, the beer was well chilled, and everything was reasonably priced. The ambiance is rustic. We enjoyed our meal and would eat there again.

A friend and I ordered two schnitzels with fried potatoes today. The prices were reasonable. The fried potatoes tasted good, nicely seasoned, and well-cooked. The schnitzel itself was a bit disappointing: The meat was too thick, and the breading could have been crispier. If things improve, we'll be happy to come back.

I would eat there again; I actually tried it because of the Schlemmerblock (sweet treats) and I was quite satisfied. The service was young, personable, and friendly, and definitely patient.

A quaint restaurant with German-Bavarian cuisine: down-to-earth, affordable, and delicious. Here: lean aspic with fried potatoes and dark Andechs beer on tap in a former brewery. Perhaps there are several chefs here, which is why the reviews are so varied... So, for us, it was one of the worst meals we've ever had. The steak looked like it had never been pan-fried, no roasted flavors, nothing. The sauce tasted like Bolognese without any meat; it was, unfortunately, a Jägerschnitzel. Oh, and by the way, I've never seen such a small side dish. The Brauhaus is no longer an option for us. But the service was very nice, I don't want to leave that unmentioned.

Reservierung hat super geklappt, Essenvorbestellung auch. Bedienung einfach toll freundlich und zuvorkommend . Chefin hat selbst mit bedient und so waren wir alle begeistert von diesem schönen und urigen Brauhaus. Karin L.

Ich kann die vorigen Bewertungen nicht bestätigen. Unser Schnitzel war zart, Bratkartoffeln lecker. Der Brauhaus Salat war frisch und ich bekam eine Sauciere voll mit Dressing. Bierpreis war super und das Bier kalt. Service auf Zack. Wir saßen draußen. Da ist man etwas auf dem Präsentierteller, aber das hat nicht gestört. Wie es drinnen ist, kann ich nicht beurteilen. Einfach mal hingehen und ausprobieren. Wir werden beim nächsten Stadtbesuch nochmals eins der vielen Schnitzel-Variationen essen.

I can't confirm the previous reviews. Our schnitzel was tender, the fried potatoes delicious. The brewery salad was fresh, and I got a gravy boat full of dressing. The beer was great value, and it was cold. The service was prompt. We sat outside. You're a bit on display there, but that didn't bother us. I can't comment on what it's like inside. Just go and try it. We'll try one of the many schnitzel variations again the next time we're in town.

One of the best schnitzels in Mainz! The sauces are well-seasoned. The side dishes, however, could use a bit more seasoning.

Revisit 5/27\25 Clean. , great andecks beer options. Easycon out and outdoor seating available. Great atmosphere and beer. Stayed in town for years on business. This was one of the better family restaurants and bars in Mainz. Same atmosphere and great selection of beer. Food use to be consistent and good. Deserts were great. Do not know if they had a change in the kitchen. the quality of prep and sourcing of deserts changed over the last 2 years. The apple strudel was disappointing. The basic menu items are still there. Flavoring in red cabbage and fried potatoes are the same and very traditional. Sauces are all good. They have english menus, everyone there speaks english well. Overall, they are very friendly and helpful in figuring out the menu and weekly specials. Be aware they remain a cash only business.

Really nice old pub vibe. The prices were great for the food quantity. Had the chicken schnitzel with creamy peppercorn sauce. Chicken was perfectly cooked. It also comes with a salad and potatoes, which were amazing. I’d recommend the small size for €12.90 for most people. It was more than enough.

The Brauhaus zur Sonne has potential... The beers are well-chosen, and all the wines come from a good, friendly winemaker. There's also a selection of coffee specialties and typical German teas. The dishes are also well-chosen, but require more care in their preparation. The service is young, friendly, and multilingual. The best part is the guests. A colorful mix of young, old, people from Mainz, and "foreigners." The Brauhaus zur Sonne has retained its name and most of its decor from "the old days." That's good, but it's diluted by the "plastic flower ambiance." Here, less would be more... The waitresses should also be careful about their attire. A solid black T-shirt always works 😉

2 x Jägerschnitzel mit Bratkartoffeln u.Beilagensalat: Das Paniermehl auf dem Schnitzeln war nass und pampig.Das Fleisch trocken und zäh.Die Jägersoße,eine Mehl Pampe ohne Geschmack und beim genauen hinsehen leicht schleimig und roch sonderbar.Die Bratkartoffeln innen alt, mehlig und beidseitig schwarz verkohlt. Der Salat ,alte braune verwelkte Blätter,die fertig Salatsoße ohne jeglichen Geschmack und schmeckte ranzig. Noch nie so schlechtes Essen serviert bekommen !!! Nach zwei ,drei Bisse haben wir das Essen nicht mehr angerührt. Die Krönung kam in der Nacht: Durchfall und gebrochen ,auch meine Frau !!!

Never again!!! The worst meal in years!!! Fried potatoes old and badly burnt. There were probably leftovers from the last portion in the pan, the black burnt fat was really disgusting. Lettuce wilted, sauce soggy. Cutlery dirty from the dishwasher.

Schnitzels were ok. Fries were in the deep fryer at least twice and were accordingly greasy and dark. Our complaint was received without apology and rather apatheticly. Service made a rather indifferent impression. We used to eat there every now and then, and things were much better and more appetizing.

Visited from Toronto, Canada Great schnitzel, with big portions at a low price. Overall service was great. Really liked their Chicken stuffed with cheese and topped with mushrooms sauce schnitzel. Also try their fruit sparkling drinks.

A somewhat outdated facility, but very comfortable and clean. We were two people and had a Jäger and an onion schnitzel with fried potatoes. The schnitzels were super tasty, a decent portion and a fair price, unfortunately the fried potatoes were not so good, they had little taste and were burnt. The staff is super friendly and on point.

Frozen schnitzel for a lot of money is not possible

Best schnitzel I’ve had in my life, and that’s saying a lot. Breading was perfectly crispy, pork was tender, and the roasted potatoes were so incredibly flavorful. Local Kloster bier was perfect for washing it down. Great atmosphere created by the history and all the local regulars that were dining. If you want to get away from tourists, this is a great place!

Prices/performance is top and very tasty schnitzels.

On Sunday (9/22/24) we were at the “Brauhaus zur Sonne” inn with a total of three guests. Taking the order was initially quick and uncomplicated. “Spaghetti Aglio e Olio” (with tomato sauce!?) was on the menu, but unfortunately it was not possible to get a small portion of it as a starter. So we ordered a Jägerschnitzel and two oven-fresh grilled knuckles. The Jägerschnitzel was mistakenly served with fries instead of fried potatoes (as stated on the menu); I was told this was a mistake on the part of the kitchen. Only after a vigorous complaint was the Jägerschnitzel served with fried potatoes. One of the grilled knuckles was served at the same time as the Jägerschnitzel, followed a short time later by the accompanying coleslaw with the fried potatoes. The second grilled knuckle was only served after another 20 minutes, initially without the accompanying side dishes. Only when we managed to draw the attention of a service staff to this deficiency after another five minutes were these side dishes served. We would rate the quality of the food as 3- (according to the German school grading system). Overall, we cannot recommend this restaurant.

Great Find! We were impressed with its delicious Chicken Schnitzel (juicy & flavorful!) and crispy Baked Tomato side. The complimentary salad with tasty dressing was a lovely touch. Friendly service too! Highly recommended.

Were stranded at the main station in Mainz with a big hole in our stomach. Our cell phone took us to the brewery...just our thing. Rustic, very friendly staff and very tasty food in brewery style. The portions are generous and really fill you up!! All 4 of us were thrilled. Afterwards we had to go back to the main station to continue our journey home... phew, a bit tiring with a full stomach =;-) We'd love to come back!!!!

The schnitzel was wobbly like rubber, few fries were of poor quality

Einmal und nie wieder, Bedienung hatte entweder telefoniert oder Kind im Arm beim bedienen. Sorry bin keiner der keine Kinder mag aber Kind im Arm an der Windel und dann wird essen serviert sorry geht gar nicht. Sitzen beim essen und dann wird am Nachbartisch gekehrt so das der ganze Staub auf unseren Tisch kommt. Sollen sie doch ein Kinderrestaurant aufmachen kein Problem aber Hände an der Windel und dann essen servieren sorry geht garnicht. Essen kaum Sosse und die Pommes im alten Fett frisiert.

Very good place to have a home-style meal

Unfortunately that was nothing - it's a shame - you expect good food with great service from a brewery - unfortunately many things were just finished products and frozen food - no taste, carelessly prepared. Tables wobble and the staff doesn't seem particularly motivated. At least one employee tried to stop the table from wobbling so much. Unfortunately we will not be making a second visit. By the way, we had fish and schnitzel

I don't actually give GOOGLE reviews, but today I have to do that! There's no other way! I was eating here with my girlfriend today and we've never eaten such a bad schnitzel and such a bad salad. The schnitzel was just dripping full of oil and the salad was carelessly made and most of it consisted of store-bought coleslaw and grated carrots that didn't taste like anything. Maybe it was because we had the food included in the price of the hotel, but even then it wouldn't have been that way The only thing that was positive was that the fries tasted good and that we had a small drink with our meal.

We were a group of seven people. The food was simply very tasty and the staff was friendly. Even my ever-nagging sister was happy. Therefore definitely five stars.

Excellent choice, we ordered what was on the menu and in 3 minutes we had it served, Rahmschnitzel (meat with mushroom sauce) and Spießbraten mit Pommes (stuffed roast meat) all very delicious.

So the service is really bad. We were on site for 3 hours and there were more than 10 errors. Waiters hardly speak any German. Plates are cleared during the meal. No thanks, no please. Something has to change here. The tables outside are wobbly and need to be tightened. Chairs are broken. You don't live long with this kind of staff.

We ate by far the worst schnitzel ever here. The schnitzels were loveless, limp, poorly seasoned and tasted bad. The fried potatoes that came with it were completely cooked through, not crispy at all and were dripping with oil and butter. I would strongly advise against this restaurant because of the high prices for very miserable food. There are significantly better alternatives in Mainz. Unfortunately, the ambience and service were only very average. A pity.

Very very bad restaurant!!! Extremely bad food!!!!!!! Greasy is to say the least.... It took them 1 hour to bring 3 steaks!!! Terrible experience. I wanted to try the knuckle and they didn't have it. I thought it was expensive for the quality of the vomiting food!!!!! A 0!!! And the waitresses.... They didn't know anything!!!! A shame

The food is simple but good and plentiful! Price-performance. It's absolutely fine. ! The service staff was very friendly, there were no complaints regarding service and their tasks.

Unfortunately there are only bottles and unfortunately no glasses... but otherwise good... delicious beers and sodas...

We asked when we entered if we could pay by card and were told yes. Then when it came time to pay we were told only German debit. Thankfully one of us had enough cash. Additionally the bill was completely wrong. And one of our orders came out wrong. Food was good but not amazing.

The pork knuckle was terrible, The skin was limp and only about 10% crispy. The meat was dry and hard in places where it should actually be soft. It also tasted old. Bah. The fried potatoes were a disgrace, watery potatoes cooked in bad-tasting oil (?) and unseasoned. Likewise the sauerkraut, which only tasted sour. I advise everyone not to eat here. The waitress asked how satisfied I was, which I answered truthfully and was only commented on by rolling my eyes. So not at all. A couple next to us also complained about their spaghetti Bolognese, which was brownish in color but the bolo was completely missing and was just dry. Never again, A bad figurehead for the city of Mainz.

We were hungry and thirsty, but only had 30 minutes because we wanted to go to a concert in the cathedral. We were served in a super friendly manner, warm dishes were on the table after 10 minutes and we were able to enjoy the delicious dishes with a cool Andechser beer. Wohin geht man mit Verwandten aus Ami Land in Mainz typisch deutsch(was immer das ist??) essen.Schwierig,schwierig. Ins Brauhaus zur Sonne,meinem Erinnerungsort zahlloser,unglaublicher Geschichten aus den 70er Jahren, bestimmt nicht Hier regiert das vorpanierte Schnitzel in Standardgröße, zähe Rinderleber Marke"Wandersmann",der hingerichtete Blattsalat mit Essigessenz "Hausdressing",Champignons der Marke "JA," aus dem Gläser und Saucen, die das Eiserne Kreuz verdient hätten. Der Service ,gewohnt osteuropäisch lustlos,ist bei mehr als 5 Gästen hoffnungslos überfordert. Nach Blicken auf die Nachbarteller haben wir nur eine Kleinigkeit bestellt und sind dann ins ,"Wilma Wunder," am Markt. Die wissen wie's geht. Scheinbar gilt ,bis auf 2,3 Ausnahmen immer noch" Wenn du in Mainz gut essen willst,fahr nach Wiesbaden.," Shame on you!!!

To be honest, you eat much better at home... cutlery was dirty... the first waitress couldn't wait to get off work. The second service was really great. There were 3 of us there to get something to eat. The cards were carelessly thrown on the table, were incomplete and one was even in English. The cutlery was dirty in a stone jug that also looked interesting inside. The cutlery was replaced grumpily. The lunch special was OK in terms of the portion price, but I don't go away to eat packet sauce. It's actually a shame, because I was there years ago and actually had fond memories of it.
