Restaurant Athen in Xanten

After a long time we were back in the “Athen” restaurant in Xanten. The reserved table was kindly assigned to us by an employee. When we received the menu, we were amazed. Compared to the website, the offer was significantly reduced and the prices were extremely raised. It would make sense to update the prices on the website so that the customer can adapt to this. The starters were good and tasty. The main course with gyros was unfortunately borderline. The gyro was extremely fatty and not crispy in any way. Various pieces tasted slightly spoiled. As a result, I didn't eat most of the gyro. The liver was okay. The rice tasted bland. The dish of baked chicken fillet was okay, but overpriced at around €23. Furthermore, the wine (supermarket wine) was served from a 2 liter bottle. €6.40 for 0.2 liters of wine is quite sporty. In general the price/performance ratio is not suitable. The service by a second employee wasn't very friendly and when it came to billing, they didn't even make an effort to give out the change. Well then. Unfortunately, the very nice ambience cannot make up for the shortcomings. It will probably be a long time, if not forever, before we visit the restaurant again.

Delicious food and friendly service

I was there today with my wife and daughter. Everything was top, very good food and top service. You can't beat the beer, myth on tap, it doesn't get any better. It's nice that you're in Xanten.

Oh dear - a total disaster! Rarely have I experienced such uninterested and ignorant staff, and I've been 'allowed' to get to know a lot of things in my life. It is better to declare various tables as reserved than to let a guest with a dog sit at the edge of the table groups. I say this because none of the tables were used in the unspeakable 2 hours we were there and we (2 people) left the restaurant about 1 hour before the restaurant closed. The dog we brought with us was not offered water, which I personally find very sad. But he felt quite comfortable on the partly mountains of dry leaves, which were definitely not all from today. Simply sweeping the outdoor area roughly 5 minutes before the restaurant opens is not a bad thing in my world... It took 15-20 minutes for the first contact with the drink order. We bridged the time by observing other new guests, two couples of whom left the restaurant without ordering during this time. When we were lucky enough to have an assistant at least stock the table with napkins and cutlery, ordering the drinks in question was still not possible because the colleague spoke neither German nor English. (I didn't even know something like this still existed...) My cola was minimally chilled and carelessly provided with no ice and/or lemon. The side salad was a reluctant and incompletely chopped joke, every chip shop does it better. Main course OK, although I have never eaten such bland gratinated gyros with Metaxa sauce anywhere else. The real hit was the fries served on an additional plate - it can't be explained, you have to experience it! During the entire time we were there, we weren't even asked if we would like something to drink. You could have recognized it from the empty glasses. Our request to pay was only fulfilled after about 15 minutes. However, from then on things got “a little” heated. Unfortunately, we overlooked the (supposed) note in the menu that only cash is charged - clearly our mistake! But I'm still speechless that something so backward still exists in a tourist town like Xanten - underground. However, they were kind enough to give my brother directions to the nearest savings bank. After another 15 minutes of waiting on my part, the time had come and we could actually pay. Unfortunately, the service staff couldn't give out the appropriate change due to a lack of change. But fortunately the colleague was so well trained in mathematics that he changed the amount to an even sum, but unfortunately he rounded it up to our disadvantage! Unfortunately, a reference to the missing change did not fall on fertile ground. In order to avoid a total escalation, we left it at that, even though even a 20 cent tip was unreasonably high. There is no price/performance ratio, I assume that the business model focuses on ripping off tourists. As a citizen of Xanten, I will neither recommend this Greek restaurant nor will I set foot in this establishment again. I'd rather graze on a dog meadow...

The food was OK. However, there is still room for improvement when it comes to service. Waiting 2 hours for food at 40% capacity is difficult. You had to order drinks inside if you wanted anything else. Even if it is difficult to get service staff after Corona, that is not the case. Women's toilet could not be locked. Was a bit confused.

A good Greek with very tasty dishes. The emphasis here is obviously on quality and not quantity. We have eaten here three times and have never been remotely disappointed.

Food only served 45 minutes after ordering. Information was bad. Many customers walked away. No compensation.

Disaster… We waited about 1 hour 15 minutes for the food, the staff never showed up and we had to ask several times. 2 other groups of tables also had to ask when their food would be ready. The staff also seems completely haphazard. And on top of that you can see a waiter calmly going out for a smoke, even though the whole restaurant is waiting for their food and no one is offered a drink. The food was tasty, but we had to spend 3 hours there with 11 people because everything took ages. Definitely not recommended, just avoid!

For singles, the meal takes an hour!? Probably doesn't bring in enough sales...or is the notice intended to scare people away?

Es herrschte absoluter Personalmangel, sowohl bei der Getränke- als auch bei der Essenbestellung und Auslieferung. Wir haben 95 Minuten auf unser Essen warten müssen!!! Dann wurde bei einer Bestellung statt Gyros Hähnchenfleisch geliefert. Mein mit Schafskäse überbackenes Gemüse für rd. 18 Euro war eine Portion in Vorspeisengröße und total verbrannt. Fazit: Schlechte Küche, schlechter Service, Preis-Leistungsverhältnis: grottenschlecht!!!!

Ich fragte ob ich setzen dürfte, kein Problem. Die Karte kam, ich habe ein Getränk bestellt. Nette freundliche Bedienung. Dann kam ein andere Kellner (Chef?) und meinte "Essen dauert eine Stunde".Andere Gäste bekamen diesen Hinweis nicht. Singles bringen nicht genug Umsatz !?

This is how I imagine a restaurant, good food, nice people, although busy, quiet atmosphere, no stress on the part of the employees but still work quickly. Price performance ratio ok. Keep it up

Very tasty food, nice and tender meat. Salad in advance. Not having to wait long might make a difference because we only got there at 8 p.m. We sat outside, there was a band playing a little further away. It was special that we wanted to order a carafe of wine at 9:20 PM, but that was no longer possible because they closed at 10:00 PM, so we both received a glass of white wine that was almost as expensive as a carafe of wine. That was a pity. But all in all we had a wonderful evening!

Delicious Giros. Everything is good.

Waited 70 minutes for the food. Guests who arrived much later finished their food. The guests at the next table left in frustration without eating. The service only responded to our complaint with the words... There were too many guests and he couldn't change that. When the food finally came (there were three of us) they forgot one thing. The third meal took another 10 minutes. Unfortunately, all in all it didn't go very well.

Good food in the middle of Xanten.

The restaurant has very good food. The lamb fillets with Greek beans and the calamari were particularly good. The service was friendly and attentive, we recommend it!

Anyone who has ever eaten in Greece will appreciate this cuisine here. Not adapted to German taste, but just Greek. We enjoyed it very much and will refresh our holiday memories here again. On a Sunday evening we got a place for two people without a reservation. The food was served promptly and the staff was very friendly. There was an ouzo with the bill, although the price was right...

The Sofrito from Corfu and the Mousaka were a dream, absolutely recommended. The best Greek I've been to so far.

A pity! Waited over an hour for the food and there wasn't even an apology or an Uzo on the house. There were six people and we also had to correct the bill. Unfortunately no recommendation.

The toilets are catastrophic for the women, there is no door that can be closed properly and no lock, anyone could come in. Or very small, where you just stand in and can turn around to go to the toilet (a square) However, when the food arrived an hour later, it was delicious. The service was fine, the people all looked stressed. It's a shame Eigtl, because the restaurant looked very nice, was very tasty despite the extremely long waiting time, but the conflicts should be calmer because visitors notice this. More bad than right. It's a shame, it was our first time there with 5 people. We waited 1 3/4 hours for our food. Apparently they were waiting for us to finish the appetizer - only 2 people had an appetizer. A waiter didn't understand anything and left the empty glasses standing. Many guests were ahead of us, even though they came later. 1 glass of red wine €8 is quite overpriced. Aperol went straight back, more water than anything else. Individual ordering not possible, only by card. Very unfortunate. All 5 meals had to be seasoned. Even the tzatziki tasted like a mug. None of us finished our food. We won't be seen again. Another negative experience. How many restaurants that have their residence on the Xanten market square - "the tourists already pay for it"!

Update 04/24/24 Unfortunately, your answer shows that you cannot handle constructive criticism at all. Did you even notice that my first review was three years old? No, you didn't but your guests are lying anyway. In any case, we both had stomach problems from your food last night and we definitely won't be coming back. Update: 04/23/24 It was completely different but not necessarily better. The meat and fries were seasoned. Half of the starter with the three creams consisted of pepperoni. What are you doing with the gyros there? This was definitely not fresh from the rotisserie, small hard pieces of meat, all the same brown. The restaurant was absolutely full on a Tuesday, no chance without a reservation. ‐‐-------------------------------- We were there for dinner yesterday. Very nice staff, the food was good but unfortunately not seasoned at all. We were able to largely compensate for this with pepper and salt. Unfortunately, thanks to Corona, spices are no longer on the tables. We then brought this up and it was explained to us that the fries were always not seasoned at all, one guest wanted more salt and one wanted less. Meat was also completely unseasoned. Yes, there are guests who like it that way. 4 of them were at the next table. Don't get angry, just think about it, you can only get better.

Delicious food, friendly service, good price

I ate there for the first time a long time ago and all I can say is, it was incredibly delicious! The staff very friendly and attentive. Today I ordered and picked up something, it was packaged beautifully and tasted great too!! There was even an ouzo! Price performance is right! I think the atmosphere is very good! Completely satisfied!!! Keep it up!

The atmosphere is very appealing. It's very cozy there. Unfortunately our food wasn't that good. The gratinated gyro was swimming in fat. The fries were not cross and not cooked through. The bifteki was delicious. When we commented that the gratinated gyro was swimming in fat, we succinctly claimed that it was because of the Gouda. No regrets, no apologies. Unfriendly reaction to our “criticism”. We would have liked a different reaction. After all, it helps to optimize the food for the next guests.

We had a very tasty meal there. Very cozy atmosphere and nice service.

Nicely located, modernly furnished. Service very attentive and accommodating. There are also a few dishes on the menu that you don't see everywhere, but we stuck to the classics. The food was really tasty, large portions with very good meat quality and perfect cooking. If I had to pick out something negative it would be the excessive dressing on the starter salad, but that doesn't change the overall rating. Bonus point for being dog-friendly. Unfortunately we are only here as tourists, otherwise we would be back soon...

Friendly service & delicious food, gladly again!

Were there just for the second time. As on our first visit, the staff was extremely courteous, attentive and friendly without being intrusive. The food was top and very tasty. Bifteki was filled with lots of cheese and was very seasoned. The gyro was fat-free and tasted great too. All in all a successful evening. Thank you again for this and keep it up, then we will be your guests very often.

Service etwas überfordert, aber freundlich... Ansonsten gehobener Durchnitt samt Preise...

Wir haben sehr gut gegessen und die Bedienung war mega freundlich ... man hatte das Gefühl willkommen zu sein ... sehr empfehlenswert uns wir kommen ganz bestimmt wieder.

So macht Urlaub Spaß, Abends in ein Restaurant gehen und sich als Gast wohlfühlen. Aufmerksamer,freundlicher Service. Ich hatte den gegrillten Lachs, geschmacklich war der super,optisch auch sehr ansprechend. Preise empfand ich als angemessen.

Sehr gutes Essen und sie haben Griechisches Bier das sehr gut schmeckt. Wenn man in Xanten ist muss man hier essen gehen.

Voor echt heerlijk Grieks eten moet je hier zijn. Erg goed dus, voor herhaling vatbaar.

War dort mit meiner Frau zum Abendessen. Inzwischen leider der einzige Grieche in Xanten. Das Essen sah gut aus, kam aber nicht an den anderen Griechen „Elia“ in Xanten heran! Das Zaziki war mit Essiggurken gemacht und dementsprechend sehr sauer. Das Salatdressing sehr süß und einfallslos. Das Bifteki fiel bei Berührung auseinander. Das Personal war relativ uninteressiert. Der Preis war für diese Leistung nicht gerechtfertigt. Gehen nicht noch einmal hin. Es gibt in Xanten bessere Lokale!

Wir waren auf der Suche nach einem Restaurant, sind auf das Athen gestoßen und haben es nicht bereut. Der Service war sehr zuvorkommend und aufmerksam. Das Ambiente sehr angenehm mit der verhaltenen Hintergrundmusik. Die Speisen kamen nach kurzer Wartezeit und waren sehr gut. Sollte uns der Weg noch einmal nach Xanten führen, sind wir gerne wieder Gäste im Athen.

Akceptowalna niemiecka wariancja na temat kuchni greckiej, lokal z dość rozbudowaną kartą w którym nie ma się do czego przyczepić... no może poza kukurydzą w sałatkach towarzyszących głównym daniom i brakiem ginu w karcie. Jeśli jesteś akuart w Xanten i masz ochotę na coś co będzie podobne do kuchni greckiej warto odwiedzić.

Fantastische plek om te eten. Het eten smaakte alsof het met liefde werd bereid en de bediening was ook zeer vriendelijk. Het is dat ik niet in de buurt woon, anders zou ik zeker vaker komen.

Habe dort ein super leckeres Kritharaki Gericht mit Rindfleisch gegessen!!!

Habe lange nicht mehr so ein leckeres Gyros gegessen,und die Bifteki waren auch super lecker.

Zit u bij de buurman? Dan mist u wat. De Griekse hamburger. Perfect mix, van burger en Griekse ingrediënten. Bravo! Kan mij namelijk niet heugen een betere hamburger te hebben gegeten. Even over de bediening, zeer vriendelijk. Locatie in een van de mooiste plaatjes in de omgeving. Restaurant net buiten het hele drukke plein in Xanten.

Super gegessen, sehr freundliches Personal, immer wieder.

Heerlijk Grieks eten in het centrum van Xanten. Het bedienend personeel was zeer vriendelijk, en de prijzen ook meer dan in orde. Aanrader voor Gyros en Moussaka!
