Restaurant Abessina in Kassel

I ordered from this restaurant. The food arrived quickly and was very generous. Rice and bread were included with every dish. The rice was delicious. The sauce was something completely new and very tasty. The bread, I believe, is made from a traditional recipe; it's soft and fluffy, and there's quite a lot of it. Unfortunately, the bread wasn't quite to my personal taste. It was a bit too sour for me. I can't comment on the ambiance, as I ate at home. The value for money is excellent.

The heating was broken. We couldn't taste any of the oriental spices.

The four of us shared a vegan platter served with the typical Ethiopian flatbread injera, rice, and a side salad. The platter consisted of seven small dishes, all of which were delicious. The portions were also generous (we could have asked for more bread and rice if needed). The value for money is top-notch! All the staff were very attentive and friendly, and the atmosphere was very cozy and authentic. We highly recommend a visit here.

The food was very tasty, but apparently we weren't having any luck with the staff. Today, December 25, 2023, at 6:30 p.m., we didn't feel at all comfortable or welcome. The table wasn't clean and wasn't cleaned until we were already seated. Unfortunately, the service seemed annoyed and bored and didn't seem to enjoy serving us. This was now the third not-so-positive experience at this restaurant, which is a real shame. Update August 2025: Another attempt. The food came quickly and was very tasty. The ambiance is nice but unfortunately dirty. I don't know where to touch the restroom door, the sink cabinet is broken, the wood is swollen, the toilet lid is broken, the carpets are dirty, the men's restroom is dirty, there are things lying around that don't belong in the restaurant, and much more. For me, a good meal also includes a clean ambiance.

A Taste of Africa, Abessina sits quietly, almost unnoticed, on Kurt-Schumacher-Straße – like a map you only discover once you unfold it. A modest entrance, and yet it is precisely that moment, when you open the door, that changes everything. Suddenly, Kassel feels wide. Suddenly, you step into a room that tastes of the South, that sounds of distant markets, that beats with the heart of Africa. Africa – that is countless languages, landscapes, cuisines. Impossible to gather it all in one place. And yet, in this small room, a symphony arises: simple ingredients, fresh and carefully prepared, woven into something greater. Spices, vegetables, lentils, sauces – each one a note in the whole. What touched me most is that the vegetarian and vegan dishes here are no side characters. They step into the light, naturally, deliciously. Freshly cooked, vibrantly seasoned – as if to say: this, too, is Africa: diverse, generous. And then, the hospitality. The kitchen had actually already closed, the day was long, the cooks were tired. And yet the door was opened for us. We sat alone, the only guests, and nothing felt rushed. On the contrary: they asked if I was vegetarian or vegan, if they could bring something special. This attentiveness, this gesture – that is hospitality in its purest form. An evening at Abessina is not merely a meal, but a small journey – into warmth, into attentiveness, into a taste of Africa’s diversity. Carried, too, by the Eritrean community that so enriches Kassel with its culture, its cuisine, its openness. In the middle of the city’s busy crossroads – and yet, like an island.

A small Ethiopian/Eritrean museum. With nice, authentic furnishings like drums, paintings, sculptures, etc. The service was very friendly. The meal took about half an hour, during which time I was able to try out the drums. The food was also authentic; we had a plate for two people, with lots of delicacies. I didn't like some of them, though. That wasn't due to any fault on the part of the owners, but purely to my own taste. Some of it just wasn't my cup of tea. The dishes often have a slightly sour taste. That's typical of their cuisine, but it wasn't to my taste. But the chef can't help that.

Drove over an hour to eat kitfo. No kitfo in the restaurant on a Thursday. Very disappointing. Orders weren't understood and eyes rolled when you made a request. On the plate was a habes injera and rice that wasn't even on the menu. No salt, no pepper, no bebere, no miet mita - basically completely tasteless. And that has nothing to do with Eritrean or Ethiopian food. Ridiculous. The butter from the supermarket. The worst Ethiopian restaurant in Germany and I know 99% of them. That was the last time.

Years ago, we happened to be passing through here, and ever since, we've fondly remembered the delicious food. Now we finally had time to include an overnight stay in Kassel in our vacation plans. Honestly, it was only to eat at Abessina. The food is still as good as we remember. We recommend the mixed platter for several people.

The food is truly delicious, especially the mixed platters, which are a real highlight. They come with traditional injera and rice, both of which are absolutely delicious. The service is incredibly warm and relaxed. You do have to wait a bit for your food, but it's always worth it!

A charming place. Chatting with the owner, who also has a lot to offer artistically (the paintings in the restaurant are his)... you arrive as a stranger and leave as a friend! And the food, "the vegan platter for two," is a delight! I'll be back!

Very good food. Nice, relaxed service. Very cheap for the amount of food. For me personally, better than Mama Africa. Unfortunately the location isn't ideal but once you've eaten there you'll want to go there more often.

We also ate the dumplings with a drink for less than 40 euros - you can't get that anywhere else. - All the drinks we would have liked were sold out, even the house specialty: coffee. All sorts of sodas, juices, nothing there. Even worse: the heating was broken at temperatures below zero. We were completely frozen. There were 2 small fan heaters running, but sitting by the window it was really a number. Overall, the restaurant is getting old. We wouldn't have thought it was so bad, but it's really dingy. Water is dripping from the ceiling in the men's toilet, and there are Tupperware containers on the windowsill in the guest room. It wasn't really clean. We won't be coming back. It's a shame because of the good food! Why not increase the prices a little and invest in the image?

The plates are really plentiful and fill more people. I am very satisfied with the overall impression. I think reservations are absolutely important for groups of 6 or more people!

First of all I have to say: I have been enjoying coming here for over 6 years now. Of course, you also know the competition, which here or there is a little ahead, but nothing comes close to Abyssina food in terms of taste. I also have to say that I haven't seen any price increase in all these years. And that, even though the kebab around the corner costs twice as much after 6 years. Of course you have to be fair, it's not something you can afford every day, but for me it's worth every penny again and again. If you consider that a tasty swimming pool fries cost €6, €25 for the mixed vegan platter for two, for example, is a great price. The mixed platters are always our highlight because you have a little bit of everything, can enjoy different flavors and don't have to choose. If desired, individual dishes can be exchanged or reordered. I certainly understand the criticism of the other contributions, such as somewhat outdated sanitary facilities and, for some, a lack of service/ambience. But for me personally, that's exactly the charm of the whole thing. It's not an expensive, posh shed, but rather it feels like you're staying with friends. Personally, I have experienced days when loud music was playing and I have experienced days when it was quiet. I was in the store at peak times and also alone. The experience at Abyssina always depends on who is working at the time. Likewise the food. Of course you wait a little longer (30-40 minutes) for your food, but it is freshly prepared. It always tastes very good, although sometimes different. Actually, that's exactly what I like as it shows that it's really freshly made. We've never had a problem with a lack of seasoning, and rice and, if desired, couscous are always delicious. They respond to special requests here, are always friendly and sometimes you chat with the boss. We have never experienced a lack of service; we were always greeted warmly, served quickly and asked questions from time to time. I think it's a shame that some people give bad reviews here because of an old cupboard door in the bathroom or not enough music, as the food overshadows everything. However, if you like a classy Italian restaurant where you can't even cough, then you've come to the wrong place. The children feel comfortable here, there is laughter, fun and all in all it is simply familiar and authentic. As I said, we have enjoyed coming here for many years.

First of all, the food is always very, very tasty and has never disappointed and always impressed. I don't know whether it is authentic, but that doesn't matter to me because it is always incredibly tasty. In terms of taste, the competition can't match it. Now the portion size is sometimes not optimal so it sometimes seems a bit expensive, but the taste doesn't disappoint. The ambience gives you African vibes and the music also seems appropriate, but the medical rooms leave a few things to be desired, but I go there because of the great food and not because of anything else. The food varies a little depending on the employee, but it's always TOP. The employees are friendly and you like to have a quick chat with the boss, who is also super friendly and gets along really well with children :)

Excellent East African cuisine, courteous staff and great ambience. It's best to try the mixed platter on your first visit... Simply the best East African I know. Abyssina is like a vacation for me!

So I can't understand what the colleague below me wrote, and badmouthing a restaurant and advertising another restaurant is not okay. The shop was closed that day, and I'm not writing this because it's my family, but because the food tastes really delicious. It's not for nothing that we've had the shop for over 15 years, there's a lot of hard work and quality behind it. We usually ask at the end whether everything was right. If that isn't the case, you have to have the courage to honestly say what isn't right. Then you can fix the mistake or give the meal completely on the house and apologize, but we can't do more than that if you don't talk to us, you should leave your political problems in Ethiopia, we're here in Germany.

If anyone wants to eat authentic food from Ethiopia, they should definitely not eat there! We come from Ethiopia and that was by far the biggest disappointment we had to experience! and no, not even the rice was satisfactory! In addition, the person on the phone is anything but communicative. From now on only the Mama Afrika restaurant, at Entenanger 4, 34117 Kassel!

Very mediocre store. Had good reviews, everything was closed due to football and we decide to visit this store. I was told that this restaurant is said to be very good. So I thought I'd go and have dinner there with my boyfriend for Valentine's Day, so I made a reservation. I was surprised on the phone that they didn't need my name to make the reservation..? Oh well. When we got there we knew why, there were really only 2 people there. It was very, very cold in the entire restaurant, the heating apparently didn't work. There was a single radiator for the socket in the middle of the corridor, which apparently didn't work either because it kept going out. Cleanliness and order apparently aren't known there either, lots of cobwebs and dust. Cables are exposed. Bad light. At the reception there are remaining chairs in the open area with all of the restaurant's folders and documents, and the Christmas decorations are still there. Well.. Let's get to the food, since it was recommended to us, we tried it... That was a mistake: It already started with the service. There was no smile, no one really looked at us, no one asked if everything was okay, if you needed anything else, you were simply left alone. I had a Fanta as a drink. Completely non-carbonated?? Since you had to wait a bit here, you looked around. Then you saw that the waiter had poured leftover Fantare from several bottles. I really thought I wasn't looking right. No wonder why there was no carbon dioxide. For dinner there was a platter with various stews and side dishes? Of course, it wasn't explained to us what was what, the dishes were very unusual. By the way, you don't have to be surprised by the menu, it literally overwhelms you (it's also very confusing with graphics and other things) and there are no food categories except for the drinks. All the stews were full of fat, the salad with different dishes or side dishes was always the same, just tasted finished and not fresh. Well, of course after the meal you don't ask how it was, you just pay and leave. No “have a nice evening” or anything like that. You also have to imagine sitting there with a jacket on the whole time because it was so cold. I really didn't expect this restaurant to be so bad. Years ago it must have been very good... Definitely NOT RECOMMENDED! I would like to save everyone this experience! Total waste of money! In retrospect, it also upset my stomach, so there was something wrong with the food...

I liked it from the moment i stepped inside the restaurant. Service was great, guys are kind and polite. After reading the menu i wanted to try more of it so i had to order plate for two. All on that plate was very, VERY, tasty. Beef was special! Rice was soft and tasty so i had to take one more portion of it. This was my first time and could say that it was not the last one. Very good job.

Hat mir hier echt gut gefallen. Erscheinungsbild der Gaststube ist OK, Deko in typisch afrikanischen Farben gehalten, passend zum Thema Eritrea, Äthiopien, Somalia. Die Speisen duften herrlich, sehen relativ ansprechend aus und sind - natürlich - Geschmacksache. Ich fand es sehr lecker, aber ich bin ja auch ein Fan von Kreuzkümmel, Koriander, Kurkuma und Chili. Auch Knoblauch sollte man mögen. Es schmeckt so würzig und scharf, wie man es am Horn von Afrika erwarten darf. Das Personal ist sehr freundlich und hat uns sehr gut beraten, ging auch auf unsere Sonderwünsche ein. Die Preise sind nach heutigen Maßstäben sehr moderat: 3 Personen satt geworden, mit Getränken für € 52,- , da darf man nicht meckern. Obwohl an einer stark befahrenen Straße gelegen, war es drinnen ruhig. Ich habe mich sehr wohl gefühlt. So, das war's zum Positiven, jetzt kommen die Mankos: Die Sauberkeit, respektive der Sanitäranlagen, ist noch ein wenig ausbaufähig. Die schmale Eingangstür könnte für Rollstuhlfahrer zur Herausforderung werden. Ganz sicher sind die Parkplätze eine Herausforderung. Am besten gleich in einer Seitenstraße parken, oder den ÖPNV nutzen. Für Raucher: Pech gehabt! Nehmt ggf einen Regenschirm-, auf jeden Fall aber einen Taschenaschenbecher und Gehörstöpsel mit. Draußen ist es nicht so toll. Aber sonst ist es durchaus ein gutes Plätzchen für den internationalen Genießer.

Bedienung verstand kaum Deutsch. Ein gewünschtes Gericht auf Speisekarte nicht verfügbar. Zutaten zu einer Suppe nicht frisch genug. Preise relativ hoch im Vergleich zu einem vergleichbaren Restaurant in der Nähe.

Super leckeres Essen, freundliches Personal Sehr zu empfehlen

Das Essen und Trinken war lecker. Es gibt eher kleine Portionen und dafür sehr faire Preise! Der Service war leider schlecht und sehr unaufmerksam was das allgemeine Ambiente und Stimmung runtergezogen hat. Hygiene am Tisch und den Toiletten…. mangelhaft.

Pros: - Das Essen war wirklich sehr sehr lecker, und die ausgewiesenen Preise an sich auch durchaus korrekt. Cons: - Die Sauberkeit ließ sehr zu wünschen übrig. Insb. war der Tisch an dem wir saßen nicht gereinigt worden, auch nicht, nachdem wir uns gesetzt hatten. - Wir haben lange darauf gewartet, unsere Bestellungen aufgeben zu können, sehr lange auf Getränke, und noch länger auf unser Essen. Ja, wir waren eine größere, unangekündigte Gruppe (14 Leute), aber selbst dafür war eine gute Stunde aufs Essen warten doch lang. Ich denke, wären die Getränke etwas schneller da gewesen wäre es nicht so negativ aufgefallen. - Einige Getränke/Gerichte entsprachen nicht der Bestellung, haben wir aber in Kauf genommen da wir durstig/hungrig waren. - Einzeln (bzw in kleineren Gruppen) bezahlen war extrem umständlich. Ein vernünftiges digitales order management system wäre vermutlich hilfreich an der Stelle. - Was wir am Ende als Teilgruppe bezahlt haben wich um ca. 20 EUR von dem ab, was wir nachträglich ausgerechnet hatten. Bösen Willen will ich da nicht unterstellen, aber wie schon erwähnt, mit einem order management system wäre das nicht passiert. - Die Freundlichkeit der Angestellten war sehr variabel. Um des Essens Willen würde ich wieder hingehen, aber erst sobald sich die Rahmenbedingungen zumindest ein Stück weit verbessert haben.

We had a lovely dinner at this restaurant. The menu is well done as it shows pictures of every meal and it is in 3 languages. Since we didn’t know what to choose we took the plate for two and it was an excellent choice. The dish comes with rice and bread. The service was quite fast and very polite. Payment was only possible in cash

Das Essen war lecker und die Preise sind ok. Die Wartezeit, bis überhaupt jemand an den Tisch kam um die Bestellung aufzunehmen, war sehr lang. Das Ambiente ist sehr einfach und klischeehaft mit Elefanten-Deko usw. Zudem war es dort sehr kalt. Trotzdem 4 Sterne, weil das Essen wirklich gut war

Es wird eine schöne Auswahl leckerer eritreischer und äthiopischer Gerichte mit und ohne Fleisch, auch vegan, angeboten. Sehr nette und schnelle Bedienung. Sehr empfehlenswert 👍

Essen war in Ordnung, leider nur schon etwas kalt. Ambiente ist sehr angenehm und alles ist schön im afrikanischen Stil eingerichtet. Auf Getränke und Essen mussten wir jedoch fast 1h warten, obwohl nicht sehr viel los war - schade.

Richtig leckeres afrikanisches Essen! Wir essen immer die vegane Platte und die ist auf jeden Fall zu empfehlen. Eine Geschmacksexplosion! Dazu ist es noch sehr günstig, sowohl Essen, als auch die Getränke! Auch die nicht vegetarischen/veganen Gerichte sollen sehr gut sein.

Das Essen war wie immer fantastisch, die Preisstruktur jedoch intransparent, sodass wir diesmal mit einem fahlen Beigeschmack und nicht ganz satt gingen - und ohne Verabschiedung, schade! Wir haben eine vegetarische Platte für 3 bestellen wollen, welche preislich eigentlich zwischen der für 2 und 4 Personen liegen sollte? Anstatt der für alle Platten ausgeschriebenen 7 Gerichte bekamen wir nur 6 - für den Preis der 4er-Platte - weniger für mehr Geld. Wir bestellten noch ein Gericht nach und landeten bei 7 Ecken = 50€ (3pax.) vs. 45€ (4pax. auf der Karte).

Incredible and highly tasty food, presented in a fun/enjoyable format for sharing. Spices were so on point. Great variety of vegan dishes vs meat dishes. Don't leave without trying - lamb curry with okra - beef curry with cognac It's a small place and they are packed, so it's going to take 45 minutes for food to arrive --> order as soon as you sit down.

Wer exotes Essen liebt ist hier richtig. Selbst deutsches Bier mit afrikanischem Aufkleber wird hier angeboten. Das Restaurant ist nicht billig aber ausergewoehnlich, denn hier wird angeboten was in Afrika auf den Tisch kommt.

Bedienung ohne Maske, ebenso Gäste, die im Gastraum unterwegs waren. Kein Impf- oder Genesungsnachweis kontrolliert. Absolut inakzeptabel. Leider wurde der Eindruck durch das leckere Essen nicht wieder gutgemacht!

Immer wieder eine zuverlässige Adresse, kulinarisch stets top. Der Service kann mit dem Essen nicht mithalten, ist aber "verkraftbar" und zum Preisgefüge passend.

Wir haben eine gemischte Platte zum mitnehmen bestellt. Es war super lecker! Geschmacklich mal was anderes, aber toll. Der Inhaber war unglaublich freundlich. Rund um toller Eindruck. Wir kommen wieder !!!!

Wir waren hier Essen, weil wir gerne etwas Neues ausprobieren wollten. Hier muss man viel Zeit mitbringen, da die Wartezeiten für Getränke, Essen und Rechnung zu lang waren. Das muss optimiert werden. Wir hatten vorweg Suppen gehabt, die geschmacklich gut und einzigartig waren. Als Hauptspeise hatten wir eine gemischten Teller mit unterschiedlichen Spezialitäten des Hauses. Geschmacklich war es durchwachsen. Einige Gerichte könnten stärker gewürzt sein. Das Personal war trotz Stress und vollem Haus offen und herzlich. Wir kommen wieder und empfehlen das Abessina weiter.

Das Essen war sehr gut und ist komplett authentisch. Leider ist der Service ein wenig unaufmerksam. Mag daran liegen das es ein Studenten Lokal ist. Sonst wären 5 Sterne drin gewesen.

Wir waren samstags zum Essen und eine Reservierung war nötig. Das Essen war lecker und reichlich, aber ich kann den säuerlichen Pfannkuchen nicht viel abgewinnen. Die Teigtaschen als Vorspeise waren sehr lecker. Weniger begeistert waren wir von der Bedienung. Unaufmerksam und etwas verpeilt, brachte die Bestellungen durcheinander und wusste am Ende nicht, was wir überhaupt hatten.

Wir hatten einen Tisch reserviert und das ist an einem Samstag Abend auch zu empfehlen. Die Bedienung war relativ freundlich und nahm schnell Speisen und Getränke auf. Die Vorspeise, die sehr lecker war, kam dann auch zeitnah. Dann allerdings begann das lange Warten. Der Vorspeisenteller wurde nicht abgeräumt und auch sonst passierte lange Zeit nichts, erst auf Nachfrage kam dann das Essen, welches kalt bis maximal lauwarm war. Der Nebentisch beschwerte sich ebenfalls über den kalten Reis. Die Gerichte an sich waren dann jedoch lecker, besonders der Grünkohl ist zu empfehlen. Zum Schluss wurde ein Schnapps aufs Haus versprochen, der nicht kam. Bezahlt werden muss an der Theke.

I do not know why many people have said that this restaurant is expensive. In our travels through North and South Germany in December 2018, this is the cheapest and best value that we experienced. We have never previously tasted this type of cuisine but every dish was delicious. I especially recommend the okra dish, but, for 2 the mixed dishes presented are excellent. They have an African beer available too, and many German beers. The only problem is that they said they had no white wine for my wife, but they clearly did not have any knowledge of wine and I found many bottles of German sparkling wine on their shelves. They gave us one for about half price. Although BYO is unknown in Germany, I am sure that they would allow it here.

Wir haben uns dieses Restaurant ausgesucht aufgrund der Glutenfreien Speisen. Wir hatten eine Fleischplatte für 2 Personen, die uns sehr gut geschmeckt hat. Das Essen war gut gewürzt und authentisch. Reis nachbestellen ging schnell. Service war freundlich und zuvorkommend, kommen gerne wieder.
