Ratskeller Oldenburg in Oldenburg (Oldb)

Always a pleasure to visit when visiting Oldenburg. Contrary to the Google description, the food here isn't "Holstein" (this is Oldenburg in Oldenburg, not the one in Holstein), but rather regional Oldenburg cuisine, often featuring seasonal dishes, and also delicious vegetarian and vegan dishes (tip: try the mushroom bratwurst).

It was a wonderful Christmas dinner! The service was attentive and the atmosphere cozy. They even baked us a fantastic belated wedding cake because our children had spontaneously gotten married. Exceptional and wonderful, thank you so much!!!

Mayor's Grill Platter - a trio for true gourmets - rump steak, tender pork neck steak, and a tender chicken medallion - served with herb butter, etc. - the whole thing was a disaster. The meat and fried potatoes were lukewarm. The diffused lighting was obviously intended to disguise the appearance.

Absolutely delicious. Reservations are a must, otherwise you won't get a table. The food was top-notch. Pork schnitzel with fried potatoes and salmon fillet with risotto. I'd give it 4 stars for the ambiance, as it could be a bit warmer, but that's all relative.

The cream schnitzel was probably frozen. But they charge €30 for it. Side dishes were divided among several people, even though they're part of the meal. But if the food itself wasn't tasty, at least there was enough for everyone. The staff were friendly and clearly trying their best.

The food is always fantastic! I'm so glad you have such a great selection of vegetarian and vegan dishes, and they're so unusual and not just your average, run-of-the-mill food. Meat and fish eaters will also find plenty to enjoy. The service is excellent, and the location is amazing :)

We were there with a small group of seven for our Christmas party. From booking and the initial phone call to arriving at the restaurant, everything was exceptionally professional. We were even able to leave our gifts there hours in advance. The staff was very friendly and attentive. I'm so annoyed that I forgot the promised Christmas present. The food was delicious, but it definitely could have been warmer. Nevertheless, it was a very successful evening in a fantastic atmosphere. Thank you, we'll definitely be back!

Anyone who enters the Ratskeller knows they've arrived at a little piece of Oldenburg. A place steeped in history – seemingly as much a part of the city as Count Anton Günther himself. Its location beneath the town hall is truly special, giving the Ratskeller an atmosphere unlike any other. The service is consistently friendly and attentive, yet pleasantly unobtrusive. You don't just feel served, but genuinely welcomed as a guest. The menu is certainly on the pricier side, but this doesn't detract from the overall impression in the slightest – quality, ambiance, and experience simply come together perfectly here. We particularly love the small bar, where you can sit, linger, and experience the Ratskeller in a relaxed atmosphere. We always enjoy coming back and can recommend the Ratskeller to anyone who wants to not just see Oldenburg, but truly experience a piece of it.

Our meal at the Ratskeller was excellent, as always; the food is simply superb. The service wasn't quite as top-notch this time, but that can happen. The ambiance, of course, remains a charmingly rustic delight.

My mother had classic kale, which was very tasty. I had venison goulash, which could have been a bit spicier for my taste, but that's a matter of personal preference. For dessert, I had speculoos cream with cinnamon plums, which was delicious 🤤 The service was friendly and attentive.

Whenever we're in Oldenburg, a meal at the Ratskeller is a must. Everything is just right: cozy, very friendly staff, and the food is always a delight!

Nope…that was awful. Starter: Tomato soup lukewarm, the pesto dollop was completely missing. €8 Conspicuous beef broth – the beef appeared in the form of two 1x1cm pieces. No strength whatsoever, quite thin and bland. But at least there were three pieces of egg custard. €8 The menu says it comes with oven-fresh baguette – yes, just a small slice with each soup. Main course: Rump steak – the meat was medium as requested, but otherwise the plate looked rather bare for €39. It came with herb butter, fried potatoes, and a side salad that was larger than the main course. Small mixed grill (Mayor's) €28.90 In short: dry, too small, and there wasn't enough of it. A small salad would have been nice. The menu said onion and mushroom vegetables. In reality, there were four tiny things; you had to search for the onion, and the other four mushrooms were in the sauce. I don't think they were even fresh, but rather from a jar/can (based on the taste and texture). There was just a tiny strip of bacon. Both dishes included fried potatoes! Why did we have to share a small bowl, even though we were paying for two? Honestly, we felt ripped off. The price-performance ratio for the dishes isn't right. And after reading through the reviews here before writing this one and after our meal, I can say that the criticism is valid. If you're aiming for a concept of traditional German cuisine, the portions should reflect that. Otherwise, it seems overpriced and the food feels stretched. If you want more upscale traditional German cuisine that matches the portion sizes (but also needs a bit more flavor), then just say so, and people won't be disappointed. When you think of traditional German cuisine, you expect a decent portion like your mom or grandma would make, not fine dining. It's a real shame because your ambiance is lovely and rustic. Traditional German cuisine is what you expect. The service was very friendly, though.

Very delicious food and good service

We had a lovely evening yesterday, Friday, November 28th, 2025. The food and service were excellent. Unfortunately, one of the staff members was wearing such strong perfume that it affected our taste buds.

Even though we didn't have a reservation and the restaurant would later be completely full, we were still able to sit down and have a meal. The food was delicious, and the service was very friendly and certainly not rushed, even though they knew it was reserved for someone else from a certain time onward. A great experience!

The steak on the mixed grill was cooked well-done without being asked, and was therefore, of course, tough. There was one bowl of fried potatoes for four people. The others got fried potatoes with kale, which was a bit of a shock! They do bring more fried potatoes, but only after you've almost finished your meal. High prices and small portions are fine if the food tastes exceptionally good... unfortunately, that wasn't the case, and therefore the whole thing was too expensive.

Wonderful, every German city should have a heart like this place.

Bad experience. As an athlete, I asked if the spaetzle in the goulash would be fried in oil. This was denied, and since it seemed odd to me that restaurants prepare spaetzle so fresh, I asked a second time. After a brief discussion with the kitchen, I was assured that this was no problem. The spaetzle arrived fried in oil. I was then offered a different dish, the roast, which was very dry and unappetizing. I finally left. If I had been told at the beginning that the spaetzle would only be served fried in oil, I would have simply ordered something else where this problem wouldn't exist. I can't stand it when promises are made to my face and then broken. Therefore, I unfortunately cannot recommend this restaurant. There were further issues at my table: side dishes were served five minutes after the main course. In two instances, the main courses were also served lukewarm or cold. For me, the evening was ruined, so I turned away from the group and went to another restaurant where I felt more comfortable and not lied to.

Excellent service, they even thought of the little ones with coloring supplies, books, and puzzles!! The food was amazing too!! Great visit, thank you!

Unbelievable! I've rarely eaten so well, and certainly not vegan. I had the noble mushroom goulash with red cabbage and dumplings, which I can't fault. Anyone who loves good, classic food or wants to learn to love it should dine here. My highest recommendation in Oldenburg, especially for vegans who don't want to eat the same alternatives all the time. I'm already looking forward to my next visit.

I'm from Oldenburg, but I've lived in the Ruhr area for 32 years. I always enjoy eating at the Ratskeller with my mother because they serve excellent, seasonal and regional food. In winter, they have excellent kale, and today we had Aunt Anna's traditional dish: herring with fried potatoes—mmmm, delicious! The staff is exceptionally friendly and accommodating! I'm already looking forward to the greenish October!

We pre-ordered and received excellent service. The Oldenburg kale was delicious, the Mettenden sausages were lightly smoked and had a great flavor, not greasy. The side dish of boneless Kasseler neck was tender and flavorfully roasted. However, the slices were very unevenly cut. Very, very thin slices. The potatoes were flavorful. The portions per person were sufficient and full-bodied. The service was very friendly and highly qualified. We felt very comfortable here. The trip to the Ratskeller couldn't have been better organized. Many thanks to the team! We would gladly come back.

I've always loved the fried potatoes that come with every other dish. On my last visit, I was served vegan fried potatoes without bacon or flavor. Until that changes, I'll look for another restaurant.

Here, home-style cooking is taken to a higher level. The taste, the preparation, and the quality of the food are phenomenal. I've rarely eaten such a delicious rump steak and such a delicious duck (on different days ;)). Everything was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The service is very friendly and attentive; everything went very quickly. The ambiance is quaint and rustic, perfectly fitting and completes the experience. I really, really enjoy eating here.

One meal was okay, the other had overcooked meat and burnt beans. Unfortunately, no one asked how the food was during the meal, so we only had a chance to complain at the end. Burnt beans were also left on our plates, and unfortunately, we didn't even get a free drink or dessert as compensation.

This was our second visit to this restaurant. We were disappointed the first time and wanted to give it another chance. Yesterday we had redfish with "crispy" fried potatoes. Just like on our first visit, the potatoes were cut much too thickly for our taste; they had nothing to do with crispiness. It seemed like the potatoes had been pan-fried rather than fried. The redfish was dry and fried far too crispy, not to mention overcooked. We won't be visiting this restaurant again; we simply don't recommend it. We don't understand the good reviews.

It was lovely: we went to the Ratskeller for our wedding anniversary and had a wonderful meal! Our waitress was very attentive and friendly. The old barrel-vaulted ceiling is absolutely quaint and beautiful. Super nice: "our" table was very sweetly decorated with flowers and hearts.

Hello, a great evening with nice people, we celebrated a birthday and enjoyed a delicious dinner.

We had schnitzel with chanterelle sauce and bread balls with chanterelle cream sauce. The potatoes were burnt (see photo), the meat was too dry, and the cream sauce was too salty. The food was disappointing.

When I was back in northern Germany, I was really in the mood for Labskaus. After some internet research, I came across the Ratskeller here in Oldenburg. The ambiance of the Ratskeller alone is worth a visit. Eleven of us came, and we were all thrilled. Then there were three of us who opted for the Labskaus. We knew there was a risk of being fooled, but things turned out completely differently! The Labskaus was excellent, the herring very tender and extremely tasty. There was nothing to complain about. My two other Labskaus diners were also thrilled. The others at the table were just as impressed with their food as we were with the Labskaus. The staff was very knowledgeable and even friendlier. Even before we got to the Ratskeller, when we called, we were first told we were fully booked, then the announcement, please wait a moment so we could hear how the service staff made this possible after all – simply fantastic! I can wholeheartedly recommend the Ratskeller in Oldenburg. We'll be back whenever we're near Oldenburg: Best wishes to the entire fantastic team at the Ratskeller from southern Germany!

We celebrated Father's Day with our father-in-law at the Ratskeller. We received a warm welcome and were promptly escorted to our lovely table in the small dining room. The service was very attentive and brought our orders quickly, despite the packed dining room. The food was plentiful and delicious. The asparagus we ordered (one with ham, one vegan) was just what we wanted—not overcooked and with a pleasant bite. All in all, a successful evening. Thanks to the Ratskeller team.

Today, three of us (two adults and one three-year-old) visited the Ratskeller Oldenburg. First of all, we received a very warm welcome and were provided with children's books and art supplies. We chose two dishes from the lunch menu: Oldenburger Pannfisch (fried fish) and beer-battered cauliflower. Both dishes were excellent, very tasty, and lovingly prepared. Highly recommended, as is the Ratskeller Bremen.

Whenever we're in Bad Zwischenahn, we make the 30-minute drive to eat at the Ratskeller. There are many restaurants, but everything here is just right. As soon as you walk in, you feel like a welcome guest. Everything is super clean and comfortable. The staff and the chef are very friendly. The food is of very good quality and very tasty. The prices are reasonable. Both meat eaters and fish lovers will find something to their liking. And there's also fresh, varied food for vegetarians. A lot of things are done right here, which is evident from the staff, some of whom have been working there for years. Keep it up.

We had reserved a table for lunch today (asparagus dishes). It was very well attended inside and out. That's why we had to wait a little longer for the main course, which we were informed about when we ordered. The starter soup with delicious bread arrived quickly and so the first hunger was satisfied. The asparagus and steak medium were cooked perfectly, the chicken breast was deliciously seasoned and grilled until crispy and juicy. Everyone in service was friendly and very attentive. Food was delicious. We were there with a group of about 12 people and unfortunately we had 2 tables and that's how we were served and one table got the food when the other table was already ready. That was a shame. But we had a lovely evening there.

Went to the Oldenburg Ratskeller today. The service was nice and the drinks we ordered came quickly. We had to wait a very long time for the food. With the side salad, the dressing was under the salad and not on top. In my Labskaus the mashed potatoes were lukewarm and tasteless. The small neck steak with asparagus and cheese gratin was also only lukewarm. The asparagus was bitter and woody in places. We were disappointed with the food.
