Qilin in Magdeburg

Super friendly staff and very tasty food. We felt very comfortable.

The Qilin (Chinese mythical animal, unicorn) has been around in MD for what feels like forever, but in fact it has only been around since 2009. Our numerous visits go back to the early days and continue to this day. The reason for this review was a family celebration (not the first) with 11 people. Everyone was very satisfied. The operators are North Vietnamese, the style is Asian fusion cuisine, i.e. Thai, Chinese and Japanese recipes are the basis and influence each other. Unsurprisingly, there is a wide selection of starters and main courses, which are prepared and presented with a lot of imagination. In this regard, the Qilin was a defining style in MD. Some other restaurants are now riding this Asian wave quite successfully. Unique selling points of Qilin remain the consistently high quality, the professionalism of the service and an ambience that is regularly adapted to new trends. In terms of price, it is in the middle range of the Asians in MD. All of this makes Qilin one of the most popular eateries in MD. Reservations in advance are therefore absolutely necessary, even during the week. We continue to remain loyal to the very nice operators.

The food is always very tasty and of high quality. The service is great, you are always served very courteously. This will last a long time, especially for your guests.

We were spontaneously in the city in the evening and called the Quilin an hour in advance and were actually able to reserve a table for two people. 👍🏻 The atmosphere is very modern and extends over two floors. Unfortunately, the only toilet is upstairs and if you are not that good on foot, you should consider this beforehand. All tables were occupied and it was therefore very loud. The service had its hands full and could hardly keep up. The food was very, very good. Fresh, very well seasoned and very tender meat. We would love to come back for this delicious cuisine.

Wife really like this place, I was ambivalent. We had the fresh spring rolls (the Sommerrolle not the Winterrolle), the fried spring rolls, the chicken satay, a Tiger roll and a Rainbow roll. The appetizers were smaller portions than expected, the sushi rolls were larger portions. (Based on our American Asian restaurant experiences.) All of them tasted different than expected. My guess is that the Asian food I’m used to has adapted to the American palate, while here, the food has adapted to the German palate. It was good, just different. Big, popular place, friendly, English speaking servers. Service was reasonably quick.

Simply great and therefore an absolute recommendation! The ambience is really nice - especially when you can sit upstairs. The service was good and we didn't have to wait long. The food was really excellent and was fairly priced. We'll definitely be back! Tip: Be sure to reserve a spot.

Mega super great. Absolutely and especially recommended for people with celiac disease :-) The staff knows their stuff and our waiter even asked about it himself and recommended dishes. I was very happy.

Very friendly staff, always on point. Ambience also really nice. Prices are way too high. Unfortunately no mixed sushi platter available. For a lot of money, a type of sushi that won't completely fill you up. Too bad!

We were there on October 2nd, 2024 and ordered the sushi. I won't deny that the food was good even though the nori sheets in the sushi were torn from one side. This is why sushi falls apart if you try to pick it up with chopsticks. I think this sushi could be better for the price which is 20-30% bigger than others. The second inconvenience was that the waitress didn't ask us if we wanted to leave the tip. She simply cheekily took €5 and quickly walked away with no chance of reacting or calculating the full amount back. We are two students and each of us also needs the money

I had to change my baby’s diaper and asked the waitress if I could change in the chair/couch she said no and I asked if there’s a changing room she also said no . We were a tourist there and outside was 17-16 degrees , it’s cold for baby to be naked . Food was okay but waitress behaviour was so bad , she didn’t even say, let me ask my supervisor/etc about it . My husband tipped them but afterwards we really felt bad .

I have rarely been so captivated by a restaurant and felt compelled to share my feelings and assessment. Sat restaurant was by far the best I've been to in recent years. The price is reflected in the excellent quality, the ambience is beautiful, the food is sensational. There aren't enough superlatives for this place. 5/5 stars, if there were more I would give more. Absolutely recommended!

The Qilin has a perfect spot in the heart of Magdeburg, close to the main train station and Maritim Hotel, for people who want a detour to Asian cuisine. The ambience appears cozy with the dimmed lights, although it can quickly become overloaded - especially when there are a lot of guests. However, we could hardly enjoy our food there because not only was the wrong dish brought to us, which delayed the entire order, but many of the side dishes advertised on the menu were not on the plates at all. The list of ingredients is also questionable at all - for example, using spaghetti as ramen noodles... well. Even if you order a spicy dish (in this case salmon), I expect to have appropriate spice everywhere, not just on one corner of the fish. I can't comment on the desserts - they weren't brought to us at all. At least they didn't have the nerve to give us credit for it. The drinks were good. Everyone can decide for themselves to what extent these improve the experience. Regarding the service - the waiters seem to be overwhelmed quite quickly with many guests. In addition, the guest reacted quite angrily about the wrong dish (despite the fact that the waitress immediately knew which dish was actually ordered, but she had also brought the dish to the table???) No attention is paid to the guests' drinks, so who If you want to drink something else, you should call the waiters, who seem to be just waiting to carry plates from A to B most of the time. Maybe we just had a bad day. However, we don't want to experience an evening like that again, so we'd rather not visit the Qilin again.

A very, very nice restaurant with simply incredibly good food for a fair price. We felt very comfortable, the service was very good.

The food was okay. They mixed up a veg and non-veg dish which is the one thing we didn’t appreciate. The service was nice and with an air of fancy! If you can digest this, then go try the food. It’s slightly more expensive than other restaurants in the area and the price can make sense for the ambience.

Very friendly and approachable staff. All young people and totally on the ball. The food also surprised us very positively. Everything was freshly prepared, the vegetables were crunchy, the meat was tender and overall very tasty. We'll be back!

We ordered different dishes, which couldn't have been more different. Everyone was so delicious! The vegetables were perfectly cooked, the meat was very tender and well seasoned. The salmon in the sushi couldn't have been fresher, the special sauce for the sushi was great and the spices in the sauces of the rice/noodle dishes were very exciting. The service was very friendly and attentive, we immediately got water for our dog and were able to order directly. The drinks, as well as the starter and the main course, were at the table reasonably quickly. We would come again and again and can recommend the restaurant 100%. Our table neighbors were also very enthusiastic and come regularly.

It was said here that you absolutely have to eat here. I agree!

All questions were resolved at the door at the entrance, you are allowed in with a reservation, the staff does not speak English at all, they are not hospitable, they do not answer emails, the dishes are of average quality

Very nice restaurant with above-average service and good cuisine. The ambience is very appealing and yet very subtle. The staff was welcoming and professional. The kitchen appears to be very well organized. We had our food on the table in twenty minutes. I would have liked a spice rack on the table to individually season the food. Unfortunately, my Duck Classic wasn't crispy, but that wasn't explicitly stated. We would come back, great location.

Stopped in again yesterday for dinner before the musical visit. Excellent food and drinks, big compliments to all the staff at this restaurant. Super attentive and friendly service staff. You really feel welcome here as a guest!! Definitely recommended and we definitely enjoy coming here to be pampered by the cuisine!

The food and service were very good. And we had nothing to complain about.

We spontaneously came here for dinner on Tuesday, June 25th, 2024. To put it briefly, everything we ordered was very, very good and really tasty. These were the red curry with roasted duck & chicken, as well as the Japan Bowl. The service was very friendly and accommodating. 5 stars from me!

Here I tried sushi for the first time, very tasty but the other dishes are also very tasty, friendly service rounds off the great taste experience. They also have a homemade Citrolimo which is highly recommended.

We have been to QLin many times and the last few times we had the impression that it was getting a little worse. The food is still good, but we had a dish with duck...which was unfortunately done...and the four main courses didn't come at the same time...all things that were better in my opinion.

When we wanted to redeem our NeoTaste voucher, the waiter got my cell phone and gave himself 5 stars. That doesn't work at all. You should be able to evaluate that yourself. Also, the waiter wasn't particularly friendly. In terms of taste, it wasn't the fireworks I was hoping for either. A pity...

Very tasty, has everything you could want from Asian cuisine and highly recommended! It's important to make a reservation, because it's always full here, and as soon as a place becomes free, it's immediately taken up again - and rightly so, because it's delicious here! Upscale ambience, but there is a lot going on here, so you can't really relax even if you're visiting. Respect to the employees who can manage everything so well!

A busy place with a wide menu selection. It took ages to get a drink and the food came spaces apart for the same course. But the food was of a good quality if a like bland in some cases.

As always, very tasty food and a lot of hospitality, despite the well-filled restaurant. We like to eat here. Table reservation recommended. Gladly again.

There were 6 of us here and everything was very good. Food and drinks delicious, service friendly, fast and attentive. What more do you want. Recommendation!

I can't think of anything negative about the products from the kitchen: whether it was a starter, main course or dessert...every dish was very tasty and quickly prepared. The ambience was nice, but I have to deduct 2 stars because the lighting is excessively bright and aligned in the form of spots. It's just a shame that there were 2 of us in the cone. Apparently several people complained about this, as everyone - except for us - was switched off when we arrived at 7.30 p.m. After “our” last two spots were out, it was comfortable. Another problem is the acoustics: Due to the full occupancy, we were only able to have a conversation after 9 p.m., when some guests had already left. What was worse, however, was the service. First of all: all the employees were friendly, and if you read my other reviews, you'll notice that I'm not very stingy when it comes to small mistakes, but at least there were a few things that went wrong that evening: 1) The assigned table for 5 was only for 4 (even with only 4 place settings). Unfortunately, there were no longer any alternatives. By the way, the table was booked 2 weeks in advance. So you simply wrote down the wrong number of people. It was just too tight. 2) Only after the above-mentioned lighting problem was pointed out twice did our request be accepted. 3) 4 out of 5 entrees arrived at the same time. We wished you a “bon appetit”. When asked whether the 5th dish had been taken into account, a quick “of course” followed. Well, I'll keep it short: After 3 people had finished, I asked another waitress who told me that they had an elevator that was too small and that's why food delivery took longer when the restaurant was full. If the table next door hadn't randomly received 4 huge bowls at that moment, I would have almost believed that 5 small plates couldn't be delivered together. After my companions were completely finished, I then received my starter. Reason given by this employee: My dish was freshly grilled. What are all these incredibly senseless justifications? I was simply forgotten! Point. 4) Main course: Perfect. Nothing to complain about. 5) Dessert: 2 out of 5 desserts were delivered incorrectly. When this was pointed out, the order form was brought to our table, the three of us (!) looked at it and decided that we were right. Professional is something else! To be honest, given all these problems, I would have expected at least a small apology in the form of an espresso, shot or something similar. Not even the word “sorry” came out of my mouth once...by anyone! If you want to enjoy great dishes and ignore the rest, you should dare to visit. If you're looking for an all-round happy package, it's better to go somewhere else. I have already felt more welcome in one or two snack bars. And there are often excuses for minor delays or incorrect deliveries in the form of a drink or dessert or at least orally.

The food here is very tasty. I tried the vegetarian sushi inside outs and crunchy rolls. They're awesome! The veggie gyoza are also recommended. It is a slightly higher-priced restaurant, which would be justified if the service were a little more friendly/casual. The staff can still be trained a bit. People don't thank you for tips and that's a shame! But a visit is always worth it.

Delicious, fresh food and friendly service.

The meals were good. However, the service was terribly bad during our visit. The staff was superficially friendly, probably stressed (the restaurant was full). What was unpleasant was that the restaurant was completely rearranged while we were there, but none of the employees were strong enough to lift tables or chairs and they were loudly pushed across the floor. A second drink came wrong and only after a long wait. We were no longer noticed as guests after the rearrangement. We finally had to ask a minimally motivated and equally minimally friendly employee whether we could pay. So you can skip visiting here.

There were four of us here. We got a place straight away. The food was also served a few minutes after ordering, even though it was freshly prepared. I sat on the ground floor so I could see the bar, which was quite well set up. The staff was friendly, but very reserved. All in all a very successful visit.

I have to say: it is really incredible! (no matter what is cooked there, it always tastes good) You have an idea about the food and the taste, and this is then achieved or is even better than imagined! ,,EXORBITANT,, UNFORTUNATELY the portions are a bit too manageable for a good eater (like me), so I'm forced to order other things in the form of starters. The starters aren't that much either (which might suit some people). As I said, they're damn tasty 😋 You shouldn't forget that for 2 people, with 3 drinks (1 beer, 1 water and a lemonade), 3 starters and 2 main courses (basically normal portions)🤷‍♂️ you can easily reach 100€ or more 🫢 All of this without a tip!!! As I said, I speak for ME (I have around €1000 a month available)🤷‍♂️ Everything is damn tasty, but unfortunately also a cost-intensive pleasure. But honestly, how often do you treat yourself?! Unfortunately, financially (in all restaurants) there is no end to the price screw, especially when it comes to drinks where the purchase and effort is the least 😊a 0.33 beer for almost 5€ 🫢 let's be honest... that has to be the case ? Well, everyone should form their own opinion on this!!! All I can say is, thumbs up, I really enjoyed it!!!

With good memories of a previous visit, we spontaneously stopped by here today. Unfortunately this visit was a huge disappointment. As a starter I had the coconut soup with vegetables and chicken, which was offered as spicy. I received warmed coconut milk with 3 small pieces of Champion and three oversized pieces of chicken. No trace of vegetables, spices or spiciness. My companion, on the other hand, had the wonton soup, which, although described as not spicy, was very spicy. My main course was chicken (too much) fried with vegetables (too little), in peanut sauce and udon noodles instead of rice. Extra charge €4 for the pasta. But where was the rice? I pay the extra charge because I want something additional and not for the exchange..... at least according to my understanding. When asked, you don't get a plausible answer. Overall, the price/performance ratio in this restaurant is not right. For me this was the last visit.

I love it when you find professionalism in the restaurant and, in addition to extremely tasty food, you also find super attentive service. You should and definitely have to pre-order as Quilin is a popular address in the heart of Magdeburg. So a must for everyone ☺️and vegans also get their money's worth, thank God

Very nice restaurant, had red Thai curry with cross-fried duck and my girlfriend had sushi. It was extremely tasty for both of us. Very friendly and attentive.

The food was again incredibly tasty. I had tuna carpacio, salmon and mackerel and a seafood bowl. Unfortunately, it is always very full, so sometimes an order gets lost or takes longer. However, when asked, the response is very polite and quick.

Basically it's nice there. I think it has a good standing in the state capital. Price-performance ratio: well... I don't need sweet potato pieces in a Thai curry with seafood. I'd rather have one more good seafood. That would still be manageable. 😉 On the receipt the dish was worth a euro more than what was shown on the menu, which I only noticed later. Maybe the managing director hasn't noticed yet... Please check your metropolitan prices for consistency, dear Qilin team! Thanks

All restaurants were fully booked on Valentine's Day. Here too it was full. With trickery something happened within a short time. We found the food very good. The staff very friendly.
