A cozy pizzeria in Mainz Altstadt which offers true taste of Italy. It has both an indoor seating area and an outdoor one!

Unfortunately it's no longer as good as usual, there's almost no tomato sauce on the pizza and it seems to me like the ingredients and spices are now being saved. Too bad.

Worst pizza in a long time, never again. The top side of the Gorgonzola pizza consisted only of cheese mush, the Devil's pizza only consisted of pepperoni. Absolutely not recommended

I haven't eaten such delicious pizza in a long time. At the end there was an espresso and the tiramisu was also tested. Delicious and a real hit for a spontaneous visit. Keep it up. We'd love to come back.

I've heard about this pizzeria from my friend for a long time. He often told me about it and mentioned that he visited this place a few years ago when he was studying in Mainz. Every time we walked past the place he said we had to eat there sometime. He praised the traditional character and exceptional taste of the pizza, which piqued my curiosity and made me excited to visit. Yesterday it finally happened. Full of anticipation, I made my way to the pizzeria expecting an unforgettable culinary experience. At first glance the interior of the restaurant looked quite good and actually had an Italian atmosphere. But over time the ambience seemed a bit forced and the staff tried to create an authentic atmosphere with Italian greetings, but this seemed rather artificial. My friend, as he always does, ordered three different pizzas so we could try different versions. However, this turned out to be the biggest mistake of the day. After the first bite, I realized something was wrong - the dough was exceptionally bad and the amount of tomato sauce was barely there. Despite various toppings, the pizza tasted bland, was dry and simply not tasty. I want to emphasize that I really love pizza in any form. I don't have overly high standards, but what we were served at this restaurant was simply the worst pizza I have ever eaten. My friend asked the staff for olive oil to at least save the pizza somewhat, but it turned out that we were served diluted oil that had absolutely no taste. That was shocking for us. The next disappointment came with the drinks - they were drawn from a vending machine like you would find in fast food chains and were completely tasteless. After a long time in the restaurant, I had the feeling that quantity was valued over quality here. Every aspect of the dining experience was disappointing. The worst thing was seeing my friend who used to appreciate this place. He was shocked at how much the restaurant had changed for the worse. What was once a real, delicious pizzeria is now a place that serves food that cannot be recommended to anyone. I don't know if the restaurant first built up a reputation and then decided that it already had such a large regular clientele that people would pay for whatever was served - but that's exactly how we perceived it. In addition, there was a family of three in the restaurant who had to wait a long time for their pizza despite the lack of crowds and were also dissatisfied with what they got after such a long wait. In the attached pictures I would like to show what our pizza looked like to make it even clearer what I mean when I talk about dryness and lack of flavor. We both left the restaurant frustrated and disappointed. To this day, just remembering that meal makes us sick. Hand on heart: I would rather eat a frozen pizza from the supermarket than what we were served yesterday. I really can't recommend this pizzeria - if you're looking for delicious pizza, you should look elsewhere.

I was there yesterday with my girlfriend. I can hardly describe how disappointed I was. I ordered the MafiA pizza with salami and the Vegetariana pizza and a "Napoletana". It's funny that people call something like that a Napoletana and they probably don't know what constitutes a Napoletana. The dough was a disaster, as limp and tough as a shoe sole. The tomato sauce was spread so thinly that I don't even want to talk about the cheese. All in all, this was just a joke. Salami that doesn't taste like salami is only available there. The Vegetariana was so dry that we lost all appetite. Also the stretched "olive oil"....sad. The bad thing, however, is that we were also guided by the positive reviews. I also knew pizza from my student days and remembered it differently. The “cult” pizzeria is anything but an Italian pizzeria. Apart from shouting some Italian words back and forth, which are supposed to convince you that the place is really, really, really Italian, in reality absolutely nothing here is Italian. I dare say any 5 year old child could make a better no recipe pizza than this. And then the positive reviews claiming it's the BEST pizza... unbelievable. The "pizza" is such an "economy pizza", with probably the cheapest ingredients available and most people probably don't even notice it. That's exactly how the so-called "pizza" tasted - like nothing! We had the so-called "pizzas" packed because we didn't want to throw them away and give them to someone who was in need and might be hungry. When I think about it now, that was really kind of negligent and evil of me... At the passage near the Rewe we found an apparently homeless man, to whom we offered the so-called "pizza". No joke, the man saw the box and said: "No, you leave it alone". Unfortunately, the so-called “pizza” ended up in the trash. I could somehow understand the man that he didn't want to accept the so-called "pizza"... To be clear here - this is certainly NOT the best pizza in Mainz! There are at least 5 pizzerias just 1-5 minutes away that are MUCH better and make real and great pizzas! Mainz is a great city, there is a lot to see and lots of great restaurants and generally just great food. However, this is not one of them. You rely on the walk-in customers and the reputation of the "cult" pizzeria, but you will quickly notice that you won't find such great so-called "pizza" here. Because of this experience, I decided to open a Google account so I could write this review. I just couldn't help it... Oh well: the gentleman who collected the plates and asked if everything was ok was really nice and helpful. Unfortunately I couldn't hide the disappointment on my face but I hope you forgive me. This extra star goes to you my friend. Therefore 2 stars for the service. How can you give 5 stars for self-service?

Stunning pizza! All hell broke loose here on Old Women's Carnival. The staff remained cool and friendly. We had a lot of fun in a great atmosphere and met great people.

Worst pizza I've eaten in a long time. The dough is way too salty, too soft in the middle and like cardboard on the edges. The cult pizzaria has such a flow that they no longer have to put in any effort. I remembered it differently. Every baked pizza tastes better.

The pizza is decent but nothing special. What bothers me most is the service. Several times, I called ahead only to find my order lost when I arrived. On one occasion, they even lost my order after I placed it in person. While they acknowledged the mistake and apologised, it's still frustrating. For me, the experience of going there is a mixed bag.

I'm sorry. But it has nothing to do with an Italian pizza. The dough tasted and smelled yeasty. Certainly okay for every now and then, very cheap. Far from an original pizza.

Totally disappointed after the many good reviews. Greasy and has nothing in common with a real Italian pizza. The “Grande” pizza seems quite cheap, but it is really small.

Came across this pizzeria last night after visiting the Christmas market and were very impressed. The furnishings and atmosphere are very pleasant, small wooden bar tables, some with benches as seats. The pizzeria was well attended and the friendly team had everything well under control. You order/pay at the counter and pick up your food/drinks there. All dishes are freshly prepared and you can see, smell and taste it. My companion had a pizza devil, which was quite tasty. But it was topped by the taste explosion of the Bruschetta pizza I chose. Sooo delicious!!!! It's a bit far away from us, but this definitely wasn't the last visit to Pizza Pepé in Mainz! 😁

The place looks authentic, but the pizza was the biggest scam of my life. It was actually the worst I've had. You don't know what a real pizza is🫣

I ordered a simple pizza with chicken breast strips. Unfortunately, I discovered that the pizza that was placed on my attic table was not at all cooked through. Both the dough and the chicken were not cooked through at all. Also, my entire pizza was swimming in tomato paste. The highlight of the whole thing was the cube-sized pieces of tomato on the pizza. In my opinion, an absolute disgrace for 11 euros. I can absolutely advise against it.

Recommended for anyone who wants to eat really tasty pizzas! They were really good - I would even go so far as to say they were the best I've ever eaten! Not a classic restaurant, more of a snack bar with seating and standing options. The interior is not modern, but cozy. The kitchen staff and the lady who took the orders were all on their toes.

The ambience is good but the food is a disaster... Sorry but welcoming guests with buonasera doesn't make you a good Italian... We had two pizzas and pasta and everything was just bad... No taste... Too bad You used to be able to eat well there... Unfortunately it can no longer be recommended at all

Best pizza... cult pizzeria for over 30 years

We love Pizza Pepe! 🍕 I grew up here in Mainz and went to this restaurant every Wednesday with my Dad for my whole childhood and youth. It is my favourite pizza and pasta in town and I love the lively atmosphere! It is very busy while at the same time homey and welcoming. I love how the cashier shouts "Mancha" and pizza bakers and cooks reply by shouting back "Grazie!" when you give them a tipp. I always come back here whenever I am back in Mainz, the quality has constantly been fantastic over the 35 years I have been going here and all that for some really affordable prices! Try out the Pizza "Pepe Speciale" (see picture) and the Spagetti "Napoli"!

A small and cozy place with excellent and very fast service

Very disappointing. Because of the many good reviews, we had a nice meal. The service is good and friendly so far but the taste of the pizzas is bad. Cheap and really not good. Cleanliness is also rather bad. Cobwebs on the pictures etc. Coziness also looks different. The Poppey pizza was so garlicky that it gave you a stomach ache afterwards. It's better to spend a little more money and eat out in the surrounding pizzerias.

Remembering my student days... felt like time had stood still... ordering and picking it up at the counter... I was there at lunchtime. Earlier, in the evening: More hectic, more shouting, always loud. Even today?

The pizza tastes good, but it's nothing extraordinary. The pizzas are rather small, but cheap. There is no saving in particular when it comes to the topping. The ambience is rather rustic at the same time inviting and cozy. Due to the really good location, the Rhine is not far, so you can eat pizza by the water in about 5 minutes. The staff is friendly and the pizza is ready in just 10 minutes after ordering.

We like to come here with the family to eat. The quality and price are right here and have been for years. There isn't much space inside, but that doesn't bother you. If there is no space on site, you can take the food with you. The staff is always friendly and the waiting times are not too long.

One of the few locations in Mainz that has not yet fallen victim to increasingly poor quality and exorbitant prices. The pizza is comparatively tasty and the ingredients are fresh. As I said, you can argue about the price, I think it's (still) relatively fair for what's on offer - let's see how it develops. Be careful, the small pizzas are really small, you won't get full but it's enough for a snack. And the pasta is average, carbonara is still prepared here according to the German tradition with cream and ham. ;)

I've known this pizzeria for 40 years and the pizzas have been sensational ever since. Great floor, classy. Good price. Whenever I'm in Mainz, that's where I go.

We went there specifically because they have gluten free pizza and pasta dishes. My gluten-free Capricciosa pizza was made with homemade dough and it was delicious. Not very big, but OK for the price. A visit is definitely worth it.

Nice there but the pizzas were tastier

In the middle of the old town of Mainz, you will find one of the best pizzerias in Mainz, in my opinion. No waiter comes to the table to serve you; you order your food and drink directly at the counter and pay for it straight away. I had a pizza primavera. Super friendly staff. There is more than enough choice, if you can't find anything here then I don't know what is. There are even gluten-free pastas and pizzas available for a small additional charge. I always enjoy going there. From spring or when it gets warmer you can also sit outside.

We were back there for the first time after Corona and we were really looking forward to it. To put it in Loriot's words: "There used to be more tinsel." There was almost no trace of tomato sauce on the pizzas. The pizza dough tasted like unbaked yeast dough. The taste of the topping (Pepe Spezial & Vegetariana) was almost 0! It's a shame, but that was definitely a waste of money! The next time we visit the cinema or the old town, we leave Pizza Pepe on the left or right, depending on the direction we walk. Too bad! Too bad! Too bad! It's probably well known that Pepe's is always overcrowded (not understandable after our last visit and our rating)...that's why only 1☆ for the ambience!

First of all, I think it's very good that Pizza Pepé Express offers gluten-free dishes such as pizza, pasta..., but I find it a bit questionable if they offer something like that and take it lightly and switch it up because it was pointed out twice when ordering “Gluten-free”. Many people may not be aware that celiac disease is not just a lifestyle like being vegan etc. If the mistake hadn't happened, I think Pizza Pepé wouldn't be bad, as the wrong pizza tasted very good, but it's a shame that with such an "extreme" mistake, not even an appropriate voucher was offered. To be honest, I was offered a new gluten-free pizza But preparing two pizzas in a row is too much for me to be honest and at that moment I was a bit taken aback.

I ate a Funghi pizza with Gorgonzola cheese sauce. It was very tasty. A good experience. A double espresso for dessert. 😉

Best pizza in Mainz!! We love eating there!

I don't know if that was a mistake, but the dough on my pizza was mostly raw. Unfortunately I only noticed it on the way otherwise I would have returned the food.

Pizza Pepé Express in Mainz is no longer what it once was. Last Saturday May 11, 204 we ordered 2 pizzas to take away, well. Anyone who likes "pizza dough" á la frozen products from the supermarket is now in good hands there, of course at corresponding prices, which are no longer justified in any way -> for this quality.

Great food, cheap and nice staff

The best pizza in the city center is at Pepé! We regularly order pizza here to pick up and have to take the longer walk compared to other pizzerias. The staff is always friendly and the quality of the pizza is great. The preparation time is between 10 and 20 minutes, depending on the volume. You can also sit on site - in summer there are additional tables outside. However, space is a bit tight and depending on the time of day you have to be lucky to get a table.

We really enjoy coming here and really appreciate the good value for money. The service is very nice and the on-site snack bar is cozy. Pizza Pepé is simply an institution in Mainz and an indispensable part of the old town!

I've known Pizza Pepe for years and am always satisfied there. The pizza, pasta dishes and salads are very tasty. I don't think it's a bad thing that you can order at the counter yourself and pay straight away given the good price-performance ratio there. There is some seating inside and in summer there is also outside seating. The staff was always friendly too. Since I'm from Koblenz but already know the pizzeria from before, I always like to come here when I'm in Mainz😊👍

Pizza Pepe feels like it has “always been” on Augustinerstrasse in Mainz. That alone is an indication of the good quality - when there are always closures and new restaurants (which don't last long) all around. The simple, minimalist, rustic ambience goes very well with the pizza(s): no frills, but good and cheap.

Unfortunately there's nothing express here... 30 minutes for a mediocre pizza.

The food was really delicious and the value for money was right. Even the food was brought to our table. The ambience also fits, as you shouldn't consider it a restaurant, but rather an express service.

An original 5 star you feel like you are in Italy.
