Macht weiter so.

The new owner changed the decor - there was a new fridge with Turkish Sprite, some plastic flowers, and the slot machine disappeared, which I support. Unfortunately, the light in the bathroom also disappeared, making the yellow walls even yellower. I'm sorry about that.

We ate there for the first time. The food came very quickly and was very tasty, the service was very friendly and also very helpful in choosing the dishes. I have to deduct one star because the restaurant was very cool and the people sitting next to me also kept their jackets on while eating. Please set the heating a little warmer. We'd love to come back.

Blame it on Jacques Berndorf, the nom de plume of Micheal Preute, grandfather of the very popular regional crime stories set in the Eifel Mountains of western Germany, but nearly everything in Hillesheim, just three kilometers away from the tiny eponymous hamlet of Berndorf, seems to be imbued with mystery, even this cozy little Italian restaurant, Taverna Romana, which, unlike many other places of business in Hillesheim, makes no reference to crime or mystery in its signage or on its menu. And yet it is a mysterious place, one that raises so many questions in the mind of the patron that we visited on two successive nights just to satisfy our curiosity: Did that spiral staircase really change direction half way up? Why is a cat curled up in my chair? Who are the featured artists in the subtle background music (because I know that wasn't Cat Stevens, or Michael Jackson, or the Beatles singing some of their greatest hits)? Were the tables, all of different design, bought at a flea market?) How did the waitress (different local girls on the two nights we were there) understand anything the owner, Massimo Tamburo, said? (Let's call his amalgamation of German and Italian “Ditaliano”, because it is certainly more Italian than German.) How big are the pizzas? (28 centimeters in diameter, as it turns out.) Why is there so much arugula ("rocket" for you speakers of British English) on the menu? And why is it spelled with two c's ("ruccola"), which is neither German nor Italian? Will a pasta dish satisfy my appetite? (It sure did mine.) Is Bitburger beer better on tap than from a bottle? (Much.) Is the house red wine any good? (Surprisingly so.) Is it the best Italian food I’ve ever had? (Not by a long shot.) Is it the best Italian food I’ve had outside of Italy? (Nope.) Is it enjoyable Italian food? (Absolutely.) Is it a good value for the money? (Yes, particularly compared to what’s available in the local hotel restaurants.) And most importantly, would I visit again even if I had all the answers to the questions that were gnawing at me? (Yes, without hesitation.)

A cozy dinner - or: a slapstick show like we haven't seen in a long time. At the end of the Christmas holidays we (2 adults / 1 child) decided to go out and eat a lot of burgers. So we went to the burger saloon in Hillesheim. Since I had already had a very good meal there some time ago, I was now full of hope that I could do it again. Unfortunately, we were successfully disappointed at almost every step from start to finish. When it came to drinks, we were told that the drink we wanted wasn't currently available. So my wife ordered an iced tea. After it was served quite quickly, it became apparent that the glass had apparently not been cleaned properly, which is why there was a clear, large spot of mold on the edge. After we complained about this, we received a new glass - with the old first iced tea. Now the mold was no longer just on the glass but was floating in pieces in the drink. After another attempt, we finally got the iced tea we ordered as a second choice in a fresh glass without mold. The waitress probably wrote down our food order, or at least wrote something down. Ordering was very easy: -A burger with sweet potato fries, here again the statement was made that these are not currently available. -A burger with chilli cheese fries, here too the statement that they were not sure whether they currently had these in stock. - One nuggets + fries with ketchup Delivered in less than 10 minutes: -Two burgers with Stekhouse fries - Homemade ketchup on a separate plate The child was left empty-handed at that point. Now as a parent you sit at the table, have your food and the child next to you watches you eat. When we asked, we were told that the steakhouse fries on my plate were mixed together with the fries for the child and that we just had to sort them out. Almost everything about the delivered order was wrong. When asked again, the child was presented with completely burnt nuggets on a skewer. The meat in the burgers tasted old and bad, which is why one burger was returned in its entirety. The steak house fries looked old and bland and were too salty. As already mentioned, the nuggets were quite dark. The "homemade" ketchup was more like a sweet and sour sauce and the mayonnaise, which was never ordered and yet served, was more like aioli. During the meal we were asked if everything was good. Since I am an honest person, I told the chef and the waitress on the spot that I had already eaten much better. This criticism was not addressed further. Even when I was paying, I wanted to know what the problem was, but I didn't get an answer here either. After this rather adventurous meal, we withdrew from the restaurant after just 45 minutes and can now say with certainty: never again! Nice attempt but failed miserably in the end. In every way. Service, food and ability to criticize were bottomless. I don't want to comment negatively on the ambience. The owner supposedly got the most out of the given space.
