Beate Burger in Cologne. Super nice people, I've rarely felt so comfortable in a burger shop. I can really suggest it to everyone.

On one hand it's Marx and Engels themed. On the other it's an expensive hipster burger place.

Ambiance and food is great. The food can be personalized a little by e.g. The choice of bread and the homemade lemonade are also really well made. Vegetarian options are also available. You can notice the quality in everything that can be found. I'm not usually the person who says "This is my favorite restaurant," but I'm very impressed with this one. Top ♡

Burger patty was completely raw and only slightly fried on the outside. Sizzling prawns are exactly 4 pieces for 12€. To compensate for an inedible burger for €17.90, a dessert was offered on the house. In summary: - Bad food - High prices - Bad service

Ketchup costs extra - €2!! What a disgrace! I ordered the “lunch menu” there (burger plus drink for €14.50). Of course, for me, a burger dish also includes a portion of fries with ketchup. I usually don't have to search the map and compare prices. The bill then came to over €22. I was really surprised, because a portion of fries (not an xxl or anything else) couldn't possibly have cost €8. Yes, she can -€6 for the fries and €2 for the ketchup. I think the price for the fries is cheeky, but charging €2 extra for the ketchup is excessive. A burger joint should bring as much ketchup as I need to eat my fries. Point. As a matter of principle, I won't go into a store like that anymore

Normally I don't give too many reviews. But the chicken wings were the best I've ever eaten 👏👏

Food was tasty, but barely warm. All of it. Also, everything took ages.

Poor value for money. The service person was nice. The burger meat was hard and dry, almost burnt, black around the edges. Apparently no exception if you read the other reviews here. That was the case with all the burgers at our table. The burger bun was greasy on the outside. But the fries are soggy. If you want ketchup or mayo with your fries, it costs €2 extra for each dip. I'm not coming back. Far too expensive for this “quality”.

My wife and I had dinner here today. A nice end to our Cologne vacation. We came on the recommendation of a friend and it was more than worth it. The burgers are massive and outrageously delicious. We can also only recommend the dips. If we ever end up in Cologne again, we would be happy to visit Marx and Engels again.

Burgers ok, 7/10, but definitely too expensive for what they are. And naming a shop after THE anti-capitalist and then selling mayo for 2 euros (with really hefty prices for the fries alone) borders on mockery

About the restaurant… nice concept, unfortunately not worked out well. Nice staff and attentive. We would say the food was OK, we had different expectations for the price, and Mr.Köln also rates it as one of the best burger shops in Cologne. The brioche was okay, the vegetables had a fresh taste, the sauces were also okay… The most important thing in the burger was just not good, meat was cooked well (kudos to the boss) but still not juicy, tough and not well seasoned, bacon didn't taste good. Unfortunately we don't know about the manufacturing problem (?). In my opinion, not recommended if you are looking for a really tasty burger. It's not an experience and it's not worth the price either. Eating there again? I do not think so.

The burger was massive and very delicious. Unfortunately we had to wait (a very) long time for service and then for the food. Ambiance is great! A bit more expensive than the average burger, but it can definitely be justified for some.

Average. Paid €108 for 4 people, one burger each, three side dishes and four drinks. For the price you can expect a lot more. Unfortunately there are no menus, so everything has to be ordered individually. The house lemonade orange passion fruit only tasted like orange juice, the pomegranate lemonade tasted like cherry or cranberry - refreshingly delicious is different! The burgers were solid, but with too much sauce for our taste, so that it constantly ran out of the burger and the burger completely fell apart while eating. The coleslaw was missing sauce. This one only tasted like cabbage and carrot. All in all, unfortunately not worth more than 3 stars, especially because of the price-performance ratio.

Today we had a delicious burger here. The homemade fries are amazing and the burgers are also super tasty. The price-performance ratio is right. The staff was also very friendly and accommodating. Gladly again, thank you very much.

Wir kamen mit ca 15 Personen (hatten reserviert) an einem Freitagabend gegen 20 Uhr an. Draußen waren die Tische besetzt, innen waren wir zunächst alleine, was sich aber nach und nach änderte. Nach der ersten Getränkebestellung wurden unsere Essenswünsche zügig aufgenommen. Leider mussten wir feststellen, dass alle anderen (kleineren) Gruppen, die später kamen, vor uns ihr Essen erhielten. Unser Essen kam dann gegen 2140 Uhr, Wir schätzen dass wir ab der Essensbestellung 1,5h gewartet haben. Zu keiner Zeit wurden wir auf irgendwelche Probleme in der Küche hingewiesen oder eine Entschuldigung ausgesprochen. Scheint normal und ok zu sein, dass man auf seine ok geratenen Burger so lange warten muss.

Pretty overpriced restaurant for what it offers. We were asked if we would like our burgers medium or well done and we replied well done. The patties that arrived at our table were so overcooked that required effort to cut them with a knife. Low quality of food, plus all sauses (simple ones like ketchup and mustard) have extra cost.

Rotten rosmiran potatoes were delivered. No salt on the fries. Sauce on the chicken was already dried up. Ribs were more bone than meat. And both ribs and chicken were partially burnt.

When I heard the name of the place, I immediately thought of "Das Kapital" by Karl Marx, which the establishment obviously alludes to, and you need a lot of capital if you want to dine in this restaurant. On the recommendation of my old school friend Doris, my erm. My work colleague Friedhelm and I visited this location. The restaurant is located in a rather questionable area and looks inconspicuous from the outside. The interior, however, is designed in a proletarian but quite cozy style. Friedhelm ordered a portion of ribs, I ordered a "Marx Cheeseburger" and we both shared a portion of truffle fries and a water. As always, let's start with the water. The hefty price of 9.5 euros for a bottle of water is probably not appropriate for a place that boasts about Karl Marx. The water was brought in an elegant blue glass bottle, but as I know as a water expert, it didn't taste particularly good. The truffle fries were probably the most flawless of the entire meal. They were nice and crispy and you could taste the mushroom well. However, a 5 star level cannot be achieved here either. As Friedhelm reported, his ribs were very good, but one faux pas was that the silver skin had not been removed, which limited the taste experience quite a bit. Now let's come to my burger: The burger is best described with the words "not bad". Unfortunately, I have to say it didn't taste like much and wasn't worth 14 euros for me. The ingredients used fell far short of the desired taste formula. Even though we give the food here 4 stars overall, this burger is significantly lower and I've had better burgers for 10 euros. We had to wait a whole 25 minutes for our dessert. Friedhelm jokingly asked if the cook was still rolling out the dough. The brownie was slightly above average and the accompanying ice cream tasted good. Marx and Engels promise a lot but deliver little. Despite WiFi being offered, there is currently none, which could be annoying for some guests with a poor mobile phone contract. Two of four vegan options were unavailable, as was the brioche bun. The sanitary facilities left a foul smell in the men's toilet and the door was not lockable. The waiting time of over an hour with only five tables occupied was absolutely unacceptable. The interior and the concept seem questionable to inappropriate, even for someone with a lot of humor. The quality of the food was average, the burger had a monotonous sauce and a firm texture even though it was cooked medium. For over €15 per burger without side dishes, the price-performance ratio is not appropriate. Only the nice artwork in the basement deserves honorable mention. Overall, it can be said that Marx and Engels would probably turn in their graves because of this lousy performance.

Completely overpriced store for the quality. I don't recommend it, there are better burgers for a better price. The ambience was also just mediocre. There were boxes lying around everywhere.

First of all, the burger with goat cheese I ordered was first class. The restaurant itself made a dreary impression, the wooden chairs had no seat cushions and the light above our table was broken. The service was good for our group of five, the waiting time was really short, and the different cooking levels were also well done.

The food was good, but unfortunately the vegan patty didn't taste good at all. In my opinion, the ambience is not that nice, everything at the back is very dark and narrow. The service was ok, friendly but a bit sloppy. (It was only announced 30 minutes after ordering that there was no avocado left for the avocado burger; the buns were swapped) Biggest drawback: Simply too expensive for all these aspects. I think selling a smaller, vegan burger without a side dish for 14/15€ is just a bit too much. I've never seen €9.50 for a 0.75l bottle of water anywhere else. I would rather go somewhere else in the future.

Nice personel. Chairs uncomfortable with small tables. The food is good but nothing more. Unfortunately it is really expensive. For me: Burger 15€ Fries 7€ Mayonnaise 2€ Juice spritzer 7€. Overall it was good but I wouldn't come back.

Food delicious. Burgers around 12 euros. Plus 5 euros for fries. You can expect 20 euros per person. Cheap is different. During our visit, the service was rude and not really on the ball. Presumably semi-skilled assistants/students. A vegetarian burger came with bacon. And then the lady started discussing when they wanted it new (“Just take the bacon off!”). You don't have to have it. I was in the restaurant for the first time for the restaurant test. When you come in, you notice that the staff don't wear uniforms but wear street clothes. I think it's a shame and it devalues ​​the overall appearance of the restaurant. We ordered from a young waitress who was very friendly and competent. Because I was alone, I wanted to bridge the waiting time with my social media channels and discovered that there was little to no cell phone reception in the restaurant. When I asked if WiFi was available, I was told that it hadn't been working for a long time. I now also find a deduction in the service! The food came after 25 minutes, which is completely justified. I had calculated 20-30 minutes. I was very positively surprised with the quality here. I'm excluding the sweet potato fries from the review for now, as you can't go wrong. In my opinion the mayo was homemade and delicious. The burger had a soft and good brioche bun from the bakery, and I would say the sauces on the burger were also homemade. Salad etc. fresh! The only thing that could be changed would be the shish kebab skewer in the burger. You use it for shish kebab as the name suggests! For a bottle of Fritz soda €4.10 in the hipster district is tough! €14.90 for this burger is very expensive. In total I paid just under €30 for a burger, sweet fries, mayonnaise and 1 drink. The bill was 20% too expensive for my opinion. I don't have to worry about money and I'm happy to spend more on good food, but the price-performance ratio should be right. We were very excited. Service very friendly and quick. Drinks and food were brought quickly (max. 10 minutes). We asked in a friendly manner whether everything was tasty and whether we would like to order something else. Later we were asked again if we had another wish. Very polite and friendly and not intrusive in any way. The ambience is something completely different than the normal standard. The semi-open kitchen makes it clear that there is nothing to hide here.

The beer was good. The food was very greasy, BBQ burgers only BBQ sauce, nothing else. Patties hard and burnt, there were no truffle fries, hair in the cheese-chilli fries, prawns swim again after being caught. But in oil. There are also vegetables that add water to the soup. We were there on a Monday evening, so it wasn't very busy. Unfortunately, both normal fries and all burger buns except pretzel buns (we would have liked to order brioche) were sold out that evening. The burgers are rather small, but taste good! If everything is available, then the selection is also good. Unfortunately we waited a very, very long time for our food (around 1 hour). The table next to us also got their food very late, when our neighbors had already eaten and paid and left, our food arrived. We would have liked a little information from the service. We would have liked to have ordered dessert, but we were worried whether it would take as long again. There is an extra star because we celebrated a birthday and the birthday child's aperitif was on the house! In the end we paid €90 for 2 drinks, 3 burgers with side dishes and sauce (burgers from around €15-17, sides from around €6 and sauces from around €2) with a tip, so it wasn't a snap. Another plus is the nice atmosphere and there are even 4 alternatives for vegans. (We didn't order anything vegan). :)

After there were no more mayo and brioche rolls on Saturday according to another review, almost everything was sold out on Sunday evening (2/25/24): no brioche, no fries of any kind, no salad, no onion rings. We got up again and left without eating anything. I have no idea what's going wrong with Marx & Engels at the moment, but I can't recommend it to anyone anymore.

Saturday evening: there is no more mayo, no brioche buns and only 2 of the 4 vegan variants to choose from. We had reservations for 8:30 p.m., but couldn't get in until 9 p.m. We also waited an hour for food. The wait and money were not worth the food and service!

Unfortunately, Marx & Engels has declined significantly. It was one of the best burger restaurants on the Rings, but here in Ehrenfeld the atmosphere is no longer really nice and looks like it is getting old. The service isn't bad, but you get the impression that only the bare minimum is being done here. The food can be tastier in other burger restaurants. It's a shame, I used to be a very big fan of Marx & Engels.

Terrible restaurant. When we entered the restaurant everything smelled burnt, but unfortunately we stayed anyway. We came to a table that was at least wiped down, but was so dripping wet that we had to dry it ourselves. We have 45 minutes. Waited until we asked whether our starter (baguette with dip) also came as a starter or with our main course. Was actually booked incorrectly and then brought without an apology. The baguette (baked roll?) was super oily, the dip was not edible. After waiting for over an hour, not being able to order drinks and fruit flies buzzing around us the whole time, we wanted to cancel the meal and eat somewhere else. Unfortunately that didn't work anymore. After another 5-10 minutes the food came. The fries were cold, the burgers were dry. When the food was served we asked for the bill, which didn't come either. After our meal, another waitress asked us if we liked it. Unfortunately we had to say no, but there were no questions. When we asked repeatedly, she quickly brought us the bill. The music in the restaurant was also so loud that it was difficult to hold a conversation. Never again.

Einmal war's nur okay, einmal sehr gut. Meine Empfehlung: chili burger mit Mais-Bohnen patty.

Sehr schönes Burgerrestaurant mit viel Auswahl, tollen Beilagen, vielen Dips und vor allem: eine schöne Bierauswahl. Ist nichts für die schmale Mark, aber man kriegt was für sein Kapital. Änderungswünsche (anderes Brötchen, Burger durch anstatt medium) wurden beachtet. Ob man sich den Mund hier mit einer Soviette abwischt? ...

Junges Volk, ganz nettes Ambiente, ist eben zwischen Döner und Fast Food Läden zu finden. Der Bürger war sehr gut, frrundliches Personal, kann man machen.

Ich wurde mit einem Lächeln begrüßt und wurde zu einem Tisch verwiesen. Sehr Sauber und schlicht gehalten, der Service war vortrefflich und die Mitarbeiterin war sehr symphatisch. Es hat an nichts gemangelt, ich bin sehr zufrieden. 3€ Trinkgeld gab es auf die Hand für die freundliche Bedienung :)

Een leuk klein tentje, net buiten het drukke centrum van keulen. Allebij een heerlijk biertjes genomen. Mijn vriendin had de klassieken burger en die viel goed in de smaak. Ikzelf had de 500g spareribs en deze was goed maar iets te mals naar mijn smaak. Verder is het zeker een aanrader voor een snel etentje.

Burger: gut, Getränke: vielfältig, Atmosphäre: da hängt ein Kabel aus der Wand. Musik: passt überhaupt gar nicht.

"Marx & Engels" aber überteuerte Preise. Preis-Leistung schlecht. Einen besseren Burger mit Bio Fleisch aus der Region gibt es ein paar hundert Meter weiter. Und zwar mit Liebe und ohne Kommerz

Bei unserer Bestellung wurden Extras gebucht und bezahlt. Jedoch nicht geliefert. Nach der telefonischen Beschwerde sollte sich jemand bei uns melden. Jedoch haben wir bis heute nichts gehört.

Das Essen ist lecker und werde immer wieder dort essen gehen.

Einfach richtig cooler Laden gehe da so gerne hin und super Auswahl für Vegetarier/Veganer. (Es gibt vier Veganer Burger) der Service ist immer super freundlich, die Preise sind auch angemessen.

Burger waren noch roh und am bluten. Das sowas serviert wird, unglaublich. Haben das Essen zurück gegeben und nur Pommes gegessen. Die Pommes waren aber gut.

Leider war ich enttäuscht vom Essen und einer unfreundlicher Bedienung. Wir wurden zwar gefragt, welchen Garpunkt wir bei der Patty haben möchten. Jedoch wurde uns eine trockene, Kohle serviert. Das Essen an sich war so La La. Ich wurde den Laden nicht nochmal aufsuchen.

Leider sehr enttäuscht waren vor Jahren auf denn Ringen dort essen der Laden war mega aber Ehrenfeld ist leider gar kein Vergleich zum alten laden die Bürger waren definitiv mal viel besser das Fleisch auf meinem Burger sah erher aus wie eine Frikadelle überhaupt kein Geschmack total trocken sorry aber das erste Mal in Ehrenfeld und das letzte Mal wir haben definitiv schon viel bessere Burger gegessen

Sehr freundliche Bedienung, was laut andere Bewertungen nicht immer der Fall sein soll. Beim Burger wird nach dem Garpunkt gefragt, was auch lobenswert ist. Die Ribs waren sehr lecker und perfekt gegart. Auch zu empfehlen: Die Bierauswahl als Probierset. Eine insgesamt sehr gelungene Erfahrung! Danke.

Einer der besten Burger in Köln, vor allem die Süsskartoffelpommes sind sehr zu empfehlen. Für einen Burger mit Pommes und Getränk bezahlt man ca. 20€. Die Auswahl ist sehr groß!
