"This restaurant is not deserving of being called a Thai restaurant. The dishes, which are far too small, lack herbs, sauce, and flavor. We were very disappointed. For example, the shrimp noodles consisted of unseasoned noodles with only two shrimp. The fried fish was exactly as described – just a fried fish with nothing on the side. Avoid this restaurant!

A really great experience, the atmosphere was fantastic, very pleasant service and top advice. It was really high quality Thai cuisine, just like you would get anywhere else in Thailand.

What an experience! The food is a bit different from what you would expect from a typical Thai place, very playful, a bit fusion, the chef certainly has ambitions towards higher cuisine. Wine was great, and the evening was rounded off with such a perfect, friendly and professional service. Will definitely come again and can recommend this place. Thanks!

Simply delicious and not your typical Thai place!! The dishes (and even the drinks) are full of authentic flavors, you can tell that the ingredients are of high quality and that everything is fresh! Can 100% recommend! The only thing that we personally would improve is the coziness of the place at night. The lights are very bright, I think dimming them and a few candles would really take the vibe to a new level!

Lovely little homey Thai restaurant. Most people get the prix fixe, which is the way to go. Dishes are interesting, imaginative and delicious. Don't expect any presentation. Portions are a bit small and the wine was overpriced (14€ for .2L). Overall, we enjoyed it, but unsure if we would return. For 110€, it felt a bit steep. But we are glad we tried it.

As a Thai and a proud food enthusiast, I highly recommend this place as the most authentic Thai restaurant in town. It's like taking a trip to Thailand! This review is regarding the professionalism of the restaurant management, as I didn't get to try the food I cannot comment on it. I had booked Khao Taan ahead of time for my visit. The day before I received a reminder for my booking so everything seemed to be in order. On the day of the reservation I head towards the restaurant, which is a 40 minute ride from the hotel I was staying at, only to find it closed. I was confused and started calling them multiple times but there was no response. Later that evening while I was going through my email I found in my junk a cancellation of the reservation due to some gas pipes re-installation that had been delayed. The email time read 11.30 AM, which was exactly 8.5 hours before our reservation. Even if it did land in my inbox, being on holiday I am busy sightseeing and not checking my phone all day, just trying to make it from point A to B as I am sure everyone does. I am an avid supporter of small businesses and especially restaurants. I despise restaurant chains and their soulless food. I don't leave bad reviews even when the food is bad as I think everyone can have an off day, we are all human. However, what happened was incredibly unprofessional and disrespectful and could have been prevented with a simple phone call. If you are visiting Berlin for a brief time only and trying to pre-book some restaurants, be warned.

Located on a calm street very close to all the cool spots and crowded places, this place is a hidden gem in the neighborhood. I had a chance to try almost everything off the menu and would totally recommend to do the same cause everything tasted delicious + a very chill vibe and a non-pretentious atmosphere really made my evening

This was probably the most surprising Thai food we’ve ever had in Berlin. Each dish has its own character, where the menu holds it together to create an unforgettable tasting experience.

This restaurant serves homestyle Thai dishes, offering dishes that you may not typically find at a Thai restaurant. A meal comes with six courses, with two options available for each course, and the food is served family style except for the soup/dessert. The mushroom soup with light ginger taste and Pak Waan leaves, gives a umami taste. The crispy fried smoked trout dish, served with sour mango salad and cashew nuts, is so refreshing and perfect for summertime. I will come back for more of it! As for the main dishes, we tried the lamb curry and squid, both of which were flavorful and tasty. Lastly, I was amazed by the chestnut dumplings dessert. The soft rice flour wrapping provided a perfect contrast to the crunchy chestnut inside. Overall, a fantastic dining experience!

Khao Taan offers an exceptional dining experience with a menu that frequently changes. Unlike the typical Thai restaurant in Berlin, Khao Taan transcends the usual green curry, introducing diners to the rich and diverse flavors of Thailand. Food: The flavors are bold yet balanced, showcasing the complexity and depth of Thai cuisine. The experience feels like eating home-cooked meals, adding a comforting and authentic touch. Dish Highlight: Butternut squash pudding Atmosphere: The staff make you feel genuinely welcome and ensure a pleasant experience without being intrusive.

The food brought me back home. Authentic Thai food for all. It's not very often you find reastaurant like this in Europe. This is my favourite place in Berlin. Food wasn't too spicy (My boyfriend is non-thai and he had no problem eating them) the portion was nicely considerate and we got to try so many things! Warm and welcoming service.

This was definitely the best Thai food I've had in Berlin so far. So delicious!!! The staff was also very friendly :) My only critique concerns the price/portion ratio; unfortunately, the portions are not enough to satisfy two people. We ended up eating more food somewhere else afterwards, and I think the price for the amount of food is a bit ridiculous. I suggest the staff increase the food portions slightly! Cheers :)

Khao Taan has some of the best spicy food I've had in Berlin. Fabulous preset menu, the lamb especially is unbelievably tender. Staff is friendly and attentive but not overbearing I enjoyed every single dish and can't to come back

Can't agree on the dish? Only want a salad? Don't come here. But if you're looking for some really good Thai cuisine and you bring curiosity and time, this is absolutely something you should try. The food is incredible, the service is really kind. You won't find white linnen and silver spoons here, but rather a simple and cosy place to feel comfortable in.

A perfect meal! Every dish was so balanced and comforting while packing a punch of flavor. The atmosphere, curated but elegantly low-key. Wow wow wow! The most incredible thai restaurant that I have ever been to! All the dishes were absolutely mindblowingly good. It’s like having dinner at your Thai grandma’s which i believe was exactly the concept they were going for. I felt myself craving more when I finished one dish. It was flavorful, spicy, and transported me back to Thailand. They were even able to accommodate my vegetarian friend last minute 🌱🩷 love love love, if you’re thinking of going, don’t HESITATE AND BOOK THIS HIDDEN GEM!!!!

The food was simply great and the staff was very nice and attentive. An extraordinary variety of flavors and ingredients, and everything freshly prepared.

Going here is letting yourself be overwelmed by the tastes of authentic and creative Thai food. Not conceptual recipes but dishes which have been finetuned over time. There is lemon grass, plenty chili, spices you might have tasted before, but yet, every bite is different and unique.

Typical Asian restaurant in B-Friedrichshain: small, wooden benches and no ambience. The food was great, but portioned very sparingly: the duck course consisted of bones and the greeting from the kitchen was a bit too limited with 4 cucumber and carrot sticks for 4 people. But the crowning achievement, after asking whether we would like anything else, was the impudence of adding 27 euros to the price for a starter salad (which was not sufficiently marinated and therefore no longer had the same taste as the one that was first served) and a small portion of rice in addition to the price of a 1/2 liter of wine from 27 euros. Nevertheless, the food was good, but with a course menu we also expect that the food doesn't come all at once, but rather in stages. Briefly described: Food great, ambience for 4 people to sit at a small table for 2 with a 1/2 liter of wine for 27 euros and a supplement of a minimalist starter salad and rice for 27 euros in addition to the 49 euros, more cheap than hip and great . We personally cannot recommend it. But it was worth the experience, but we still prefer to go with the price range in Charlottenburg - because here the price/performance/service is more in line.

Upscale Thai cuisine - so good!

We visited Khao Taan on the weekend based on a recommendation. The set menu is basically for the table, although soups and desserts can be chosen individually. We loved the river catfish laap and dry roasted beef with fried egg. A roasted onion cake dessert was a surprise. The restaurant manager was pleased with our enthusiasm. We will be back.

Excellent family restaurent, and you basically dine with the family at a cozy environment. Undoubtedly, one of the best Thai food we experienced so far. The dishes were uniquely customized with untraditional ingredients and spices. Excellent food and services. Definitely a must-try!

Very nice and cosy place, you get a sharing menu with different dishes of your choice. All dishes were very tasty, we especially liked the sourness of the fish soup and also the pork belly and the tender beef curry. Highly recommended

Sehr leckeres Essen, mit einer breiten Palette an Geschmäckern und tollen Gerichten. Man schmeckt, dass frische Zutaten von einer handwerklich ausgebildeten Person verarbeitet werden. Eignet sich meiner Meinung nach für einen "besonderen Abend", es ist etwas außergewöhnlicher aber keine Haut Cuisine. Die Bedienung war sehr nett, schnell und kompetent.

Authentisches, sehr leckeres Thai Essen und netter Service. Das Konzept ist ungewöhnlich für Friedrichshain: Man wählt das Menü als Gruppe (alle müssen sich für die gleiche Speise pro Gang entscheiden) und die Portionen werden dann geteilt. Wie gesagt es hat geschmeckt und ich war satt, aber für mich persönlich ist der Preis von 45 Euro (September 2023) zu hoch bzw. hätte ich erwartet, dass dann wenigstens ein Getränk inklusive ist. Die Getränkepreise haben es, wie hier schon bei anderen Kommentaren beschrieben, wirklich in sich.

Khao Taan is a very traditional Thai food restaurant, from the staff, decor, asian, thai people eating along side with you really means something, and of course, the spicy options are also true to the traditional thai cuisine! 😁 The menu is really original as you have a single price tag and are able to try every dish in the menu basically, on a share-with-all approach! Really great for a group of at least 3 or more people. Everything is really good but i have to stand out the wonderful shrimp soup! Thanks for the experience!

This thai restaurant is very thai authentic food. Food is region Ayutthya and delicate with a set menu option because this is extremely hard to prepare. Haven eaten in the best restaurants in Bangkok this restaurant is there with the best of Thailand with a more French decor.. A totally different thai experience which is is so refreshing after the boring food options of so many others . Thailand has so many fantastic regional dishes and we are happy to recommend this restaurant for a different experience.

Khao Taan is a very spicy, original, thai experience in Berlin. The concept is a shared menu for the table, at a fixed price per person (€45/p.p.). Our choices for food: 🐔 Chicken soup - a great surprise, full of flavour, with a taste of basil and coconut. 🍆 Relish / Salsa - a paste made of sweet pork, aubergine, shrimp paste. Served with vegetables. Very tasty and smooth, it actually tasted more like shrimp. 🥗🌶️ 🔥 Shrimp salad - very crispy prawns, served cold, with veggies, was the begging of a very spicy experience. I actually consider myself someone that enjoys spicy food, but maybe here it was a bit too much, my lips were burning. But then, it was really tasty as well, so I wanted to keep eating it, although I was on fire. 🐟 Cod Curry - also really spicy, but more smooth than the previous. The cod was perfectly cooked, and the coconut milk was a great balance. 🍛 Beef Curry - as we were three, we got the chance to choose both curries. The beef one was perfect, really tender, with fresh herbs and lime. 🐚 Clams - and we went back to burning. Their homemade burnt chilli paste is fire! But the clams were great though. 🥥 Coconut pudding - with a salted coconut cream, which made it a great ending for this meal. The dishes come with all the rice you need, and they also serve Berlin made beer, which was much needed (Pale Ale was really good!) Overall, it's a great experience! Personally, a bit less spicy would have been just perfect. The service is also very friendly and the place is simple and casual. Recommended to make a reservation, and bring cash, as they don't accept cards.

Splendid, tasteful and fun place. Limited seating inside (so make a reservation is my tip). I'll start with my remarks: portions are for sharing and in the end I didn't feel we really ate that much. Especially when comparing it with the price you pay. Now for the the reasons I gave it 5 stars: flavours are exquisite - some spicy dishes, some very savoury, all intensely beautiful. Wine selection is nice, service is familiar and attentive. A special note goes to the two desserts, which blew us away - truly. I suggest ordering more than they tell you to!

This place definitely serves authentic Ayutthaya recipe right in your table in Berlin. Gives the feeling of Thai original food what you can get in Bangkok.

One of my favorite restaurants in Berlin. Excellent Thai food with dishes that you won't get in most normal Thai restaurants. We go here a couple times a year and always see something new and interesting. Actually spicy as well, which is hard enough to find in Berlin.

We were a party of 4 and has an amazing dinner. Everything was super tasty but loved the jacobsmuscheln and the porkbelly. And the coconut dessert! Will be back!

Ein kleines, puristisch eingerichtetes Thai Restaurant. Klares Konzept mit begrenzter Auswahl. Die Speisen sind frisch zubereitet und weisen eine große Bandbreite von Aromen auf. Die Speisefolge besteht aus fünf Gängen. Der Service ist familiär, nett und unaufdringlich. Und der Hund durfte mit, großer Pluspunkt. Insgesamt sehr empfehlenswert, es sei denn, man mag es nicht scharf.

I love Thai food but cannot imagine how this place got such good reviews. You certainly don’t have to book as the place was empty and the food not very good at all. It’s a set menu so no choosing anything for yourselves. I ended up eating one prawn and a couple of spoonfuls of VERY sticky rice, in fact it was just a lump of rice really, plus 2 beers for a total of 56 euros for my share. You don’t get a bill he just shows it to you on an iPad, not very professional.

Truly authentic and delicious Thai food in a low-key decor restaurant. The experience is unique, and the set menu concept gives you a good family dinner vibe. The wine selection is also excellent. I will most certainly repeat my experience at Khao Taan. They will also cater for allergies and food preferences (vegetarians and such). Just make sure to let them know when booking a table.

We have tried a lot of Thai places in Berlin and this is the absolute favorite! Love the non Europeanized food, the concept of sharing and the sense for beautiful details concerning food appearance and restaurant decoration. And the service was really lovely too. Little gem in Friedrichshain.

Love that they kept the flavours authentic. Possibly the best Thai restaurant I've been to in a long time in Berlin. Set menu and its a sharing concept. All the food comes out at once so you'll have a dazzling array of dishes to try in one go. Portioning was pretty good too. You won't come out hungry. Quaint little restaurant so booking is recommended.

Wonderful flavors! Especially the salmon salad, steamed fish and duck curry. The family style serving makes the meal very communal. Be sure to go there with people of similar protein preferences 😉 The desserts could be a bit smaller given their sweetness.

A spectacular meal! We ate here a few months ago, and I have been searching for similar Thai food in my city but nothing comes close. The variety of dishes was great. I recommend this restaurant to everyone I know visiting Berlin. The story, the ambiance, the food… all one of a kind!

Traumhaft, einfach wundervolles Essen!

Meine Freundin und ich hatten hohe Erwartungen - diese wurden leider enttäuscht. 😔​ 👍 ​​Zuerst das Positive: Nettes Ambiente (aber nicht außergewöhnlich für Berliner Verhältnisse), angemessene Getränkepreise, und spannende Karte (= Thai Gerichte, die man nicht an jeder Ecke bekommt). Nun zu den Dingen, die uns persönlich gestört haben: 👎 Essen: Geschmacklich entweder nichts sagend oder unangenehm scharf (habe in Thailand gelebt für 1+ Jahr, habe dort egal ob Street Food oder gehobene Küche nie etwas derartiges erlebt). Wirklich kein Gericht hat uns vom Hocker gehauen. 👎 Service: Die junge Dame war weder freundlich noch bemüht. Eine Mini Anpassung des Menüs wurde sehr unflexibel zurückgewiesen und Kartenzahlung ist nicht möglich ("Die Gebühren würden lieber in hochqualitative Lebensmittel investiert" -> konnte ich zumindest weder bei Gemüse noch bei Fleisch/Fisch schmecken). 👎 Fazit: Ich kann das Restaurant leider nicht weiterempfehlen. Sowohl das Essen als auch der Service sind aus meiner Sicht unterdurchschnittlich für Berliner Gastro Verhältnisse. In Kombination mit dem gehobenen Preispunkt von 39€ pro Person haben meine Freundin und ich uns sehr über das schlechte Preis-Leistungsverhältnis geärgert. Schade! ​

Small place, food was amazing and unique!

Absolutely yum! Make a reservation for your next dinner! It’s a pre fixe menu for 39 /pp and so the more people there are, the bigger the servings. Seemed like it was mostly couples here though. The flavors of the food culminated in a fantastical explosion of sour and spicy deliciousness. They use ingredients that I rarely see on menus, so it seems like they really care about what food they serve here. The menu items supposedly changes a couple weeks, so after two months or so, it should be a different menu. So I’d be happy to come back in a month or so.

Ich finde das 3-Gänge Menu ist ein super Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis. Den Gruß aus der Küche empfand ich als sehr charmante Geschmacks-Explosion. Hatte damit gar nicht gerechnet. Und zudem ist der Service top und ich bin wirklich nicht leicht zufrieden zu stellen. Man merkt wie viel Herzlichkeit im Restaurant im ganzen Konzept liegt. Ich empfehle den Homemade Tea. Top Empfehlung von mir :)

Wir waren vor ein paar Tagen das erste Mal dort und ich bin immer noch ganz hin und weg. Das Essen war fantastisch, der Geschmack hat uns komplett zurück in den Urlaub nach Thailand versetzt und der Service war total herzlich und aufmerksam. Auch das Preis/Leistungs-Verhältnis hat mich absolut überzeugt. Das ist Fine Dining vom "finesten" und der Preis mehr als OK. Gleiches gilt für den Flaschenpreis beim Wein.

Bin nach Hause gegangen und immer noch irritiert. Am Ende stimmt einfach Preis Leistung nicht. Das Essen ist ok, aber hat mich nicht begeistert, nur der Starter und das Dessert waren lecker. Die Getränke, ein Glas Wein 0,25 für 15 EUR .. hab ich was verpasst?? und die Einrichtung ist second hand. Am Ende waren es 110 EUR für 2 Personen und war froh nach Hause zu fahren, um mich aufzuwärmen. Schade!

Leider waren wir von dem Essen enttäuscht. Die Bewertungen haben definitiv mehr erwarten lassen. Das Essen ist viel zu scharf, was leider in der Karte nicht zu entnehmen ist. Das Konzept erschließt sich mir auch nicht wirklich, da man für 4 Personen nur 3 Hauptspeisen bestellen kann, davon 2 mit Fleisch und 2 mit Fisch . Keine Flexibilität bei der Wahl, wenn man kein Fisch möchte. Alternative ist dann ein Salat . Dafür 39 Euro pro Person ist für die Größe der Gerichte happig. Für ein Glas Rotwein oder Weißwein (0,2 ) 12 Euro zu bezahlen, ist unverschämt. Das Ambiente ist nett, aber nichts Besonderes.
