Ein wundervoller Abend :) Wir konnten bei schönstem Wetter draußen sitzen. Liebevoller Service und ganz fantastisches Essen. Dieses Menü inkl. der Kaffeezeremonie ist ein echtes Erlebnis.

Absolute Empfehlung, auch wenn man alleine Speisen geht! Man wird direkt sehr herzlich begrüßt, die Karte vorgestellt, das Menü erklärt, wie die Gewürze hergestellt, wie man das Essen zu sich nimmt und vieles mehr. Das Essen ist unglaublich lecker, wundervoll aromatisch, die Portionen sehr viel mehr als ausreichend und der Preis mehr als angemessen, sogar eigentlich zu günstig für die Qualität und Menge. Alles ist sehr freundlich und familiär. Ich war alleine dort essen und wurde von den Besitzern sehr nett unterhalten, wie als würde man alte Freunde besuchen und sich über die Zeit unterhalten, in der man sich nicht gesehen hat. Zur Kaffeezeremonie werden einem die noch grünen Kaffeebohnen vorgestellt, woher sie kommen, wie sie geröstet werden und wie gebrüht. Zum rösten ist man auch gerne eingeladen das anzusehen. Karl's Café & Weine wird auf jeden Fall ein Pflichtbesuch auf meinen Reisen nach Hamburg! Denn man geht hier nicht nur zum essen hin, sondern auch für die experience und Herzlichkeit!

Ein einzigartiges Juwel Hamburgs. Hier zu speisen fühlt sich an wie in einem Film. Es wird immer einen besonderen Platz in meinem Herzen haben.

War zum 2nd mal hier und bin mal wieder mit strahlender Laune nach Hause gefahren. Ich kenne aktuell keinen anderen Ort, der so herzlich geführt wird. Das Essen könnte für den einen oder anderen etwas scharf sein, für mich war es aber genau richtig. Der kräftige selbst geröstete Kaffee ist ein genuss und das zu sehen macht einfach Freude :). Danke für die schöne Zeit.

Absolute Empfehlung! Sehr leckere Küche und die Inhaber sind sehr offen und freundlich. Das Essen hat auch überzeugt. Die Auswahl ist nicht groß, was ich persönlich auch besser finde. Dafür ist das, was man bekommt ein kulinarisches Erlebnis. Komme auf jeden Fall wieder!

Dieses Restaurant hat unsere Erwartungen nicht erfüllt. Unsere Speisen waren fad und lauwarm, die Bedienung unaufmerksam und unorganisiert. Der Tisch klebte und die Toiletten waren ungepflegt. Für den verlangten Preis war die Qualität inakzeptabel. Insgesamt ein frustrierendes und bedauerliches Esserlebnis.

Unser letzter Besuch hier war eine Katastrophe. Mehrere Gerichte kamen verspätet und zu unterschiedlichen Zeiten, eines war eindeutig aufgewärmt, und die Entschuldigungen des Personals waren halbherzig. Es mangelte an Sauberkeit, und die Organisation in der Küche wirkte chaotisch. Von einem Restaurant dieser Art hatte ich deutlich mehr erwartet.

Was für eine Enttäuschung! Die Gerichte waren geschmacklos und die Konsistenz stimmte bei mehreren Speisen nicht. Der Kellner nannte falsche Wartezeiten, und der Service wirkte gehetzt. Der Sitzbereich war eng, und die Tische wurden nicht ordentlich abgeräumt. Leider rechtfertigte dieses Esserlebnis weder den Preis noch den Aufwand.

Ich war mit meinem heutigen Besuch äußerst unzufrieden. Das Hauptgericht war verkocht, die Beilagen matschig und die Präsentation lieblos. Der Service war langsam und unprofessionell, und die Rechnung enthielt Fehler. Der Gastraum wirkte laut und ungepflegt. Ich ging hungrig und verärgert – das Essen war das Geld definitiv nicht wert.

Sehr guter Gastgeber, man fühlt sich willkommen und wohl. Das Essen ist spannend und muss probiert werden. Etwas unscheinbarer Laden aber unbedingt rein gehen.

Wie unachtsam von mir diesen seit Jahren mir bekannten und tollen Platz noch nicht bewertet zu haben. Hier erlebst Du Gastronomie mit Leidenschaft gemacht. Jeder Aufenthalt ist ein wunderbares Erlebnis.

Ein wirklich süßes kleines Lokal mit herausragendem Service und besonderem Essen. Wir haben gestern spontan unseren Abend hier verbracht und werden auf jeden Fall wieder kommen. Wir hatten das Menü in vegan für zwei und uns wurde angeboten, Nachschlag zu bekommen, wenn wir möchten. Ausnahmslos alles hat uns sehr gut geschmeckt.

Ein Erlebnis, eine kleine Reise in ein fernes Land und ein Chef, der Gastfreundschaft und Würde auf wundervolle Weise vereinigt. Der Gaumenschmaus ist herrlich!

I really enjoyed the visit. We (3 people) tried Ethiopian for the first time. There is only 1 menu you can choose. I would have liked to try more Ethiopian cuisine, but at least the menu they have is very good. I just don't know how high the desire is to come more often if there is no choice. The lentils as a starter were great. A bit spicy for standard German. The main course is then the large platter like in the picture. The various side dishes are then eaten with the dough/bread thing. It is possible to have everything delivered later if requested, but we couldn't manage our record. For dessert you can then have the cake and/or some fruit. Tasted very good too. And some popcorn and a coffee or tea. All in all a good menu with three courses and coffee at the end. Price performance of this menu is good. However, now the criticism. The drinks prices are extremely high. We would have liked to drink more, but it was just way too expensive for us. 6€ for 0.33l. The staff was excellent. A young, nice employee and the owner were on site. We felt very comfortable. The restaurant is not very big, so it makes sense to make a reservation because there are few seats. Especially at rush hour. The parking situation in Hamburg is usually difficult. Try your luck in the nearby streets.

Der Gastgeber bemüht sich zu jeder Zeit, von der Reservierung über eine kleine Zeitverschiebung bis zur Begleitung im Restaurant. Das Ladenlokal ist liebevoll dekoriert und war am Dienstagabend zu ca. 50% belegt. Das 3-Gänge-Menü ist das einzige Angebot und kostet aktuell 26€ (egal ob veg. oder mit Hähnchen). Alle Speisen in den drei Gängen werden bei Bedarf kostenlos nachgelegt. Zwischen den Gängen wird auf Wunsch zusätzlich frisches, salziges Popcorn gereicht. Das Essen ist köstlich und gut gewürzt. Die Getränke sind im Verhältnis zum Essen recht teuer (Flasche Sauvignon Blanc 31€, Flasche Wasser 9€). Der Gastwirt gibt einem jederzeit das Gefühl des Willkommenseins, ist an dem Gästen positiv interessiert und gibt auf Wunsch nähere Informationen zum Essen und anderen „typisch äthiopischen“ Bräuchen und Angelegenheiten. Insgesamt hatten wir einen tollen Abend und freuen uns auf eine Wiederholung.

Small, cozy location with fabulous injera! I often travel to different cities and love Ethiopian cuisine, but I have never seen such great service in any other African restaurant. Yes, if you only consider the price for the main course it is a little above average, but here we get a 3-4 course menu. And of course, in addition to the food, you also pay for service, which was well above average from what I'm used to. My personal highlight: homemade coffee liqueur. Incredibly delicious. I will definitely come back here on my next trip to Hamburg.

Super good menu, great value for money and amazingly seasoned. Very personal service, super friendly and a special feeling in the store. There were two of us and we really enjoyed our time, the hospitality and the food. Highest recommendation, we will be back!

Wonderful! Karl welcomes you warmly and you are served very politely and caringly and the food is wonderful. You can even get seconds if you want. The “price-performance ratio” couldn’t be better. We will be back very soon and can highly recommend Karls Café.

Authentic Ethiopian Eritrean cuisine. No selection problems as there is only the menu including hand washing.

Alex is super friendly and accommodating. There is a 3 course menu. Our wishes were taken into account at all times and we were even given a second helping. I found the food really tasty, some a bit too spicy for me. It's nice that there are still shops like this in Ottensen. 1 point deduction for the prices for Fritz Cola (6 euros) and 1 glass of wine (8 euros)

I visited here today with my wife and daughter and had an absolutely lovely evening with very tasty and authentic food. Service and quality of food 10 out of 10 stars! The tea, the coffee, the popcorn and also the cake, all freshly and deliciously prepared. I often ate at an Ethiopian restaurant in Dubai and I have to honestly admit that the restaurant in Hamburg is authentic and very tasty! We'd love to see each other again :-)

A very nice atmosphere with super nice service. The food tasted very good even though there were few choices. However, the vegetarian/vegan version only omits the chicken meat for the same price. But the whole menu is well rounded and you actually get coffee freshly roasted on site. A unique experience. After a very nice evening, we left the restaurant feeling very relaxed and wanting to come back.

Just a wonderful experience! We had a great evening, tasty spicy food, warm and welcoming service which makes you feel like you're part of the family immediately, nice wines and AMAZING coffee. You can order more of your favourites for free and if you get lucky, you will be offered some delicious coffee liquor at the end of the meal. We found a new favourite restaurant in Hamburg!

What a great restaurant! We were here in the evening and sat in the very beautiful, decorated outdoor area, felt completely comfortable and the food was also a pleasure. There's only the menu, but it really has everything you need, including an Ethiopian coffee or tea ceremony and really warm, great service.

Visited this charming little resturant last night with my partner and loved it! The resturant is run by a husband and wife, who were lovely. They have a fixed price menu, which was ridiculously cheap (I am a Londoner so used to much more expensive prices), which sees a starter, main course, dessert, followed by tea or coffee. The menu can be either vegan, vegetarian, or chicken. We went for the chicken option. To begin, water was poured over our hands to clean them, as ethiopian food is typically eaten with the hands. We have eaten at Ethopian resturants in the past, and have never experienced this, and so were very pleasantly surprised. The starter was amazing! We really loved the lentil salad as the spices used really gave it a good kick. I could have eaten it all day! The main was typical of Ethiopian food, various small accompaniments placed on an injera. We got given extra injera for free, and were told we could have more of the toppings and/or injera for free. That was really lovely of them to offer more for free, and as a Londoner have never experienced this. We really loved each of the toppings. The collard greens were wonderful, and the chicken fell straight off the bone. The lentil and vegetables were great too. In the centre of the injera was a lovely sauce, which was great accompanying the vegetarian dishes (which already had their own flavourings). The desert was organic fruit and cake. We loved the chocolate cake! It was like a smooth brownie with nuts. We were again offered more for free, but that was dangerous as it was soo good! We had to say no, otherwise we would have eaten too much. The coffee and tea were really good! They roasted the coffee beans in front of us, and said they make fresh coffee every day, and watched them make my partner's coffee. My partner said it was one of the best coffees he has ever had, and he drinks a lot of coffee. I chose to have the herbal tea. Never had anything tasting like that before, but it was good, and I knew it was full of good things! Would definately have again. It was also accompanied by popcorn. Overall the hospitality was amazing. The husband explained each of the dishes to us, and gave us a bit of history. We learnt about his and his wife's background, and he asked about ours. We felt very welcomed, and appreciated. We felt we could have stayed until close, as we did not feel rushed at all (the usual feeling I get in London), and they kept offering us more food for free. But we were stuffed full and had to say no. I highly recommend this place! The hospitality and service is some of the best I have ever received (I eat out 2-3x a week minimum), and the food was soo good!

An incredible experience. The food is delicious, the quality is incredible, the price of the menu is perfect for the amount of food and the great quality (25 € for a full menu without drinks), the atmosphere is super cozy and familiar, and the service is top! We enjoyed getting to know Alex and he made us feel like part of the family. We will definitely come back ✨😊

As a woman you are discriminated against here. I wanted to have a coffee and entered the restaurant. The boss told me: this is only for men and I had to leave. I was shocked that something like that existed in Germany. Outside I saw 4 men laughing their asses off. Apparently, as a woman you are not taken seriously and are made fun of. Sorry, but I have no understanding of that kind of thing and I don't find it amusing either.

Das Essen war super lecker und der Inhaber hat uns so gut unterhalten und ist echt schlagfertig. War sehr sehr lustig. Man kann auch das Menü in vegan wählen. Der Schokokuchen ist wirklich wahnsinnig lecker und der Kaffee dazu einfach super stimmig. Leider war es sehr eng. Sowohl mit 10 Personen als auch bei den anderen Tischen wo nur 4 Personen saßen. Wir hatten einen sehr schönen Abend mit ganz viel leckeren Essen und guten Wein.

Die Lokalität ist schön, das Essen ist wunderbar, und die Damen sind freundlich. Allerdings war der ältere Herr, der uns bedient hat, unhöflich und hat grundlegende Regeln der Etikette missachtet. Meine Mutter wurde offensichtlich benachteiligt, und er reagierte patzig und passiv-aggressiv auf normale Fragen zum Essen. Das hat unseren sonst schönen Abend getrübt. Obwohl ich ungern schlechte Bewertungen abgebe, besonders bei einem Familienunternehmen, ist in diesem Fall eine ehrliche Bewertung als Vorwarnung angemessen. Ich fühlte mich nach dem Restaurantbesuch wegen des Verhaltens des Kellners richtig unwohl.

Das Menü hat mich nicht ganz überzeugt. Recht scharf gewürzt und sehr saures Brot dazu. Service und Ambiente waren jedoch diesen einen Besuch wert

The restaurant has a fixed menu and is a little on the expensive side. The food itself is excellent though and the waitstaff is super friendly. Definitely make a reservation before visiting.

Klasse Service, freundliche Menschen, tolles hochwertiges Essen. Mensch fühlt sich willkommen und freut sich auf den nächsten Besuch.

Wir (5 Mädels) waren heute da. Als wir ankamen, war das Restaurant noch relativ ruhig. Dies änderte sich jedoch im Laufe des Abends, eine Reservierung ist daher eine gute Idee. Wir waren sowohl mit dem Essen, als auch mit dem Service sehr zufrieden. Das Menü ist grundsätzlich vegan (abgesehen von etwas Hüttenkäse, der in der vollveganen Version weggelassen wird). Eier und Hähnchenschenkel können ohne Aufpreis hinzubestellt werden. Des Weiteren gab es auch ohne Probleme einen Nachschlag. Auch beim Dessert! Und der Schokokuchen war ein Gedicht. Wir haben zum Essen nur Wasser und Rhababerschorle getrunken und daher am Ende für ein drei Gänge Menü mit Nachschlag und doppelt Dessert nur € 32,- pro Person bezahlt. Ein Wahnsinns Preis/Leistungsverhältnis. Wir kommen auf alle Fälle wieder und können das Restaurant nur weiterempfehlen!

Ich bin froh über eine Weihnachtsfeier hier gelandet zu sein. Gut gewürzte Speisen, liebevoll zubereitet und von einem sehr bemühten Wirt gebracht. Wirklich lecker. Eine gewisse Schärfe muss man bei manchen Speisen aushalten können, aber sicher wird man auch beraten, was die Gewürze betrifft. Es ist ein kleines Lokal, gemütlich eingerichtet und bietet eine fast private Atmosphäre. Reservieren wird sicher nicht schaden. Gerne komme ich wieder. Dann mache ich auch Fotos.

Vielleicht die beste Restaurant-Erfahrung, die ich bisher in Hamburg gemacht habe. Super authentisch in kleiner gemütlichen Atmosphäre. Super netter Service mit tollem Essen. Essen gibt es immer zu bestimmten Zeiten in einem 3-Gänge-Menü. Dabei kann jede Person auswählen, ob vegan, vegetarisch oder mit Fleisch. Kann es nur empfehlen 😊

Cooles Konzept mit nur einem Menü und das dann auch sehr günstig anzubieten. Mir hat es sehr gut gefallen. Das Essen war toll und der Service war sehr gut. Aber erhöht den Preis fürs Menü, 25€ bei der Qualität und mit kostenfreien Nachschlag für 3 Gänge ist zu günstig. Da dürft ihr gerne mehr für verlangen.

Also sowas arrogantes und dennoch zugleich höfliches hab ich noch nicht erlebt. Verhuschtes, verschrecktes, weibliches Personal. Macho Chef. Völlig unflexibel und nach einem teuren Wein sind wir wieder gegangen. Haben nix gegessen. Schade.

Ein absoluter Glücksgriff! So gut und aufregend habe ich schon lange nicht mehr gegessen! Ein Muss für jeden, der offen ist für das kulinarische Angebot der Welt! Freundlich, herzlich und authentisches Personal und ein so liebevoll gestalteter Innenhof, in dem man nichts von Trubel Altonas mitbekommt. UNBEDINGT ausprobieren!!! Ihr werdet es nicht bereuen

Sehr lecker und nette Atmosphäre

Sehr authentisches und gemütliches Restaurant. Das Essen und der Wein waren sehr lecker. Man kann sich bei der Bewirtung einfach nur sehr wohlfühlen. Hier hat man als Gast das Gefühl etwas besonderes zu sein.

Ich finde es gut, dass es nur ein einziges Gericht gibt, für alle dasgleiche. Das macht die Entscheidung leichter. Leider war nichts davon frisch zubereitet, und besonders gut hat es auch nicht geschmeckt. Vegetarisch bzw. Vegan bedeutete, dass letztlich Lebensmittel weggelassen wurden statt einen Ersatz zu haben. Die Getränke sind absolut überzogen, ein Glas Wein (0.2) für 8€. Die Atmosphäre ist schön, die Dekoration va draußen sehr einladend. Es war unsere erste Erfahrung in einem äthiopischen Restaurant, wir haben so viel Gutes über die äthiopische Küche gehört, aber dieses Restaurant erfüllte nicht unsere Erwartungen. Vielleicht in einem anderen Restaurant.

Nice outdoor seating. Simple but good classic ethiopic food, tastes like I am used to. Kind service from most of them. Price is high for what you get, though, and I am not used to pay almost 8 euros for tap water.
