The owner was unfriendly when we paid. Far too expensive for what we got. We won't be back. The menus were stuck together; we should have left right then and there.

I can only confirm this entry! Never ever!

The food was okay, but nothing more. The service was very friendly and the atmosphere was generally cozy, however, the beer was warm and some dishes couldn't be ordered because they were out of stock. Overall, too expensive.

We waited for the order to arrive for almost an hour in an 85 decibel noise environment. They should have warned us that we had to wait an hour when they took the order. Even if the food is delicious, I don't think it's worth it.

We recently dined at Il Mulino and had a truly wonderful evening. Just looking at the menu, we were impressed by the variety of vegetarian options. Here, you can see that vegetarians aren't just casually considered, but that the dishes are creative and well-thought-out. The selection ranges from classic Italian appetizers to sophisticated pasta dishes and pizzas. Everything we ordered was perfectly flavorful and prepared with great attention to detail. The service was absolutely pleasant: The waiters were very friendly, attentive, and always had their eye on the right moment without ever being intrusive. You feel well looked after without it being too stiff or overly intense: just the right balance. What we were particularly pleased about was that Il Mulino is also very child-friendly. Our children were not only greeted with a smile, but also made to feel truly welcome. Small special requests were fulfilled without discussion, and the atmosphere was relaxed enough to make even a family feel at home.

Pizza is good, but no better than any other halfway decent Italian restaurant. Prices are significantly too high, and the service doesn't live up to the standard set by the price. Drink prices are higher than at our favorite Michelin-starred restaurant.

Conclusion: In our opinion, the positive reviews you can read here are fully justified. We went to Mulino twice in the course of 1 week. The service is excellent, and we would particularly like to mention Gabriel and Roberto, who made both evenings a real highlight. They know how to offer guests as much entertainment as they want and are also competent advisors when it comes to choosing food and drinks. I liked the fish soup as a starter so much that I ordered it for both meals. My wife's starters were also very tasty (Arctic shrimp). The main courses (monkfish, guinea fowl breast, veal fillet, truffle pasta) were prepared to perfection, as were the side dishes and the sauces called for a second helping. We are already looking forward to our next visit to Essen and will definitely eat at Mulino again.

Despite making a reservation by phone a week in advance, the table was prepared for a large group. It's a shame - we will no longer use Il Mulino for business meals.

We were able to reserve a table very spontaneously (<24 hours) for a special occasion. Our expectations were exceeded because even flowers were taken care of and opened earlier. We enjoyed service at the highest level, the food and wine were a pure pleasure. Thank you Roberto for this experience and a very successful evening with you.

We (2 people) cannot comment on the food, as unfortunately that didn't happen. However, we don't give more than one star overall because the so-called "host" really annoyed us last Saturday evening. The reserved table was not yet free, even though we were 10 minutes late. However, some tables were unoccupied and in our opinion we could have easily been seated elsewhere. Of course you would have had to stock up for that and you probably wanted to avoid that, for whatever reason. In any case, we were supposed to sit on two stools right at the entrance and wait until the table intended for us became available. We did that well. Meanwhile, other guests entered the restaurant and were shown directly to their table... It was too uncomfortable for us in the entrance area and when we politely expressed the wish that one of the free tables should be set for us, we were told the following in a very unfriendly manner: "I'm telling you for the third time now that your table is not yet free!" That was just too much for us and we left the restaurant. The so-called “host” then rushed after us and shouted loudly after us, in front of other guests who had entered the restaurant at exactly that moment, that we were after all too late... Pretty bold, downright arrogant and on top of that totally illogical. If we had been on time, the table would not have been free and we would have had to wait even longer. It's a shame it had to end like this. We were thirsty, hungry and were really looking forward to a delicious dinner in a cozy atmosphere...

Il Mulino is an absolute must! Despite the crowds and the fact that we had not made a reservation, they found a spot for us and we were warmly welcomed. The service was very attentive, noticed that we had difficulty with the German menu and immediately offered an English version. The food was fantastic! The Panzerotti al Salmone (with salmon-ricotta filling) and Panzerotti ai Porcini (with Steinpilz-ricotta filling) were both delicious. To finish we shared a delicious tiramisu with delicious coffee. Overall, a great experience and definitely a place to come back!

On October 8th I reserved a table for December 13th, 2024 (12 people) by email, which was confirmed by email on October 9th. On the morning of December 13th I received a call from the restaurant confirming the reservation and number of people. Contrary to the confirmation email, I was informed that the table was only reserved for 2 hours. Very tight for a cozy meal. But how are you supposed to find an alternative within 7 hours? So we were forced to address this outrageousness. When we arrived at the restaurant we were immediately informed that we would have half an hour less if we all paid individually, as the waiter needed 30 minutes to prepare the bills. We ignored this statement. We have nevertheless pointed out that everyone will pay for their own food so that the waiter can prepare individual invoices directly. After the starter, the main course was served to us after a total of 85 minutes of our booked time. So we still had 35 minutes to “gobble down” and pay. Or from the restaurant's perspective, 5 minutes. Because the waiter then has to prepare the bills. The quality was average and two dishes had to be returned due to the quality. 10 minutes before our time was up, we hadn't quite finished our main course when the waiter pointed out that the next groups for our table and the tables next to us were already there and that we should now pay a total bill. We could sort it out between ourselves later. Neither coffee nor dessert were possible. Of course we paid separately. The waiter was extremely overwhelmed and the next group had already taken a seat at the next table. Since the table hadn't been cleaned yet, the owner belittled the waiter so much in front of the guests. Conclusion: Good ambience, average food, mass processing instead of a cozy evening. And the crowning glory is an owner who is too nice to touch things himself and just chatters around. He is the model of “hot air and nothing behind it”. This shop and especially the owner didn't earn a cent and I will enjoy a great meal at high quality Italian restaurants again in the future. One of them is directly on the other side of Essen Central Station at the beginning of Rellinghauser Straße. So it's better to stay away from il Mulino

Great place for Italian food. The service is top and the food is excellent. Book a table here and you’ll never regret. The staff makes the atmosphere the best and they do everything right for you the moment you step inside. Quick service and the staff were great help when ordering. The pizza for the kid was superb, and the pasta for my wife was top 5 she ever ate. The pepper steak I ate was so tender and perfekt cooked that I rate it top 3 ever.

A very bad restaurant, the boss is very unfriendly and when you ask him to be polite he uses a very different tone which is absolutely unprofessional. In addition, the location is in an old bunker where there is no cell phone reception, which is also absurd in today's modern times. It was the first and definitely last time I visited this place.

Had dinner with my wife in this great restaurant for 2 evenings. Because my wife is half Italian, there was immediately a nice friendly connection with the service. On our 2nd evening, my wife was even allowed to order a dish off the menu, which was specially prepared for her... Top restaurant and very hospitable!

As visitors to the beautiful city of Essen, we wanted to eat something on the way back and stopped at a nice Italian restaurant, after a long stay, the best service, as well as a very good culinary delight and the nice company and service from Roberto 😀 Happy and satisfied, we continued our journey home! Great restaurant, nice, authentic service. Great food. If you sit outside, the children can play in a nearby playground and you can keep an eye on them. Not usual for the city center.

Delicious food, very motivated service. But one thing went strange: No allergens or additives are marked on the menus. There is only a note that there is an extra card with all the information available upon request. Because a few people in our group cannot tolerate gluten, we asked for the allergen menu. The waiter replied with exaggerated cheerfulness. We should simply say who is allergic to what and the dishes will be adjusted accordingly. So no allergen card. So when we ordered, we asked clearly whether the buckwheat noodles were really only made from buckwheat - without wheat or spelled. Then the friendly waiter became unsure. He couldn't say with absolute certainty because they buy the pasta ready-made. It was somehow not possible to look at the packaging. There was still no trace of the allergen card in which it would have been included. But yeah, there shouldn't be any gluten in it except for trace amounts. These are real buckwheat noodles, everything is okay. We gave it a chance... two days later the stomach pain slowly went away. Conclusion: Nice restaurant if you can tolerate absolutely everything. If you have to be careful, it's better to choose a kitchen that knows what it's cooking.

Good service, unfortunately in the basement

We were in Essen for a business appointment and came across this restaurant. From the welcome to the entire service and food, everything was excellent. Starters, main courses (pizza, pasta, meat dishes) and desserts were lovingly prepared and we all enjoyed them without exception. Rarely have I been to such a good Italian restaurant. Added to this is the service. Roberto was responsible for us. Despite the restaurant being fully booked, he was extremely friendly and put a smile on our faces several times with one or two casual sayings. Unfortunately we come from Lower Bavaria otherwise we would definitely be with you more often.

Always a good address for a nice lunch in downtown Essen. Rustic, well-kept ambience, prompt service that always has a relaxed saying on its lips. Everything tasted very excellent.

We received a warm welcome and the many waiters were initially very businesslike. Drinks such as aperitifs were offered. Unfortunately, it wore off very quickly. The wrong beer was brought and my wine didn't come at all. The food was ok, overall very expensive.

Really good Italian food for being in Germany. I really liked the bruschetta and the Bresaola pizza, this last one is not very common in Germany that’s why really appreciated. Another amazing food is their tiramisu, Really mouthwatering! The service was also really nice, despite the restaurant being full they were quite quick in serving us and the waiter even excused himself by mentioning that there were full and understaffed. Big special thank you to the waiter Roberto, who was really nice and fun with us. Small little minus point was the atmosphere, as the restaurant was really full it was also really loud, so was for us ( a group of 8 people) really difficult to talk and hear each other. But overall a great experience!

Outrageous. Table with ten people, all eating different expensive things. In the end, the waitress refuses to charge anything other than dividing the total bill by ten.

I really enjoyed this restaurant. While the food may not have been the best I've ever had, it's certainly recommendable for an Italian restaurant outside of Italy. The pizzas and pasta dishes were all quite flavorful. The Tiramisu didn't quite hit the mark for me, though it wasn't bad. The service was relaxed and friendly, and they were notably welcoming to children, which isn't always the case in Germany. The ambiance was authentically Italian, filled with happiness and lively conversation.

We hebben hier wat gegeten en gedronken prijzen voor het eten aan de hoge kan voor wat je krijgt . Aardige bediening maar helaas te veel in rekening gebracht. Kwam er later achter dus terug gegaan en mijn te veel betaalde geld terug gekregen. Kwam een beetje over als of ze het wisten dat er te veel op de rekening stond. Dus helaas voor ons was dit een eenmalig bezoek.

Mooi, goed georganiseerd en derhalve altijd druk restaurant. Reserveren is een must. De ruimte is niet heel groot, maar de opzet is efficiënt en ondanks de grote toeloop verloopt 1 en ander zeer beschaafd. Net als de bediening,..... netjes, formeel, maar met heel veel ruimte voor luchtigheid en een grapje. Het eten is voortreffelijk en verrassend, nooit eerder at ik een pastagerecht met Pernod-saus. Allemaal niet goedkoop, maar je krijgt er veel voor terug.

Fine Italian cuisine in a friendly atmosphere. We came from a heavy winter thunderstorm and were grateful for the friendly and professional service. After some prosecco, we had mixed salad with a tasty dressing. The pasta fresca as main dish were very delicious. Very good pasta in a very fine sauce. The restaurant is large, but not too noisy.

Das Essen war super lecker. Wir waren mit einer größeren Gruppe dort und die eine Hälfte bekam ihr essen schnell und die andere Hälfte erst, als die erste schon fast fertig war. Das war nicht so glücklich

Sehr freundlich, gutgelaunt, aufmerksam und immer ein nettes, fröhliches Wort auch wenn es voll ist das findet man leider nicht überall. Das Essen war sehr gut ein Gaumenspaß, und man sollte einen Tisch vorbestellen aber selbst ohne Reservierung lohnt es sich zu warten denn, es wird so schnell wie möglich an Lösungen gearbeitet das die Wartezeit so kurz wie möglich ist. Das einzige was nicht so schön ist, aber was der Größe geschuldet ist, ist das es etwas laut ist bei der Menge an Menschen. Aber wenn man sitzt und herzlich aufgenommen wurde, hat man alles vergessen immer wieder gerne denn selbst wenn mehrere am Tisch sitzen bekommen alle zur gleichen Zeit das Essen 😉 weiter so und Dankeschön und kommen sehr gerne wieder.

Pah, da hat alles gepasst. Die Gerichte waren riesig (eigentlich waren wir nach der Vorspeise satt) und haben sehr gut geschmeckt. Das Preis-/Leistungsverhältnis war perfekt.

So ganz kann ich die ganzen guten Bewertungen nicht verstehen. Ich muss zugeben, dass Essen war wirklich lecker, allerdings hat der Service null Sterne verdient. Der Herr des Hauses hat es wirklich ausgenutzt, dass wir eine große Gruppe waren und uns wirklich penetrant neu eingeschenkt obwohl mehrfach darum gebeten wurde nicht nachzuschenken. Häufig wurden die Bestellungen nicht vollständig gebracht, man musste mehrmals erinnern und dann kam es entweder doppelt oder sogar falsch. Leider haben wir die Rechnung nicht geprüft - unser Fehler. Uns wurden 5 Pizzen statt 2 berechnet und das ist nur einer von vielen doppelt berechneten Posten. Für mich wirklich eine absolute Unverschämtheit. Für uns war das somit der erste und letzte Besuch bei il mulino.
