Beautiful, almost 200 year old hostel, now a successful ensemble, hotel with catering and it's great. Plus the house specialty: giant cream puffs, which are lovingly prepared. Also a pleasantly friendly staff. There is a kind of bistro attached which functions as a biker meeting place. Due to its location on the main road between Oberhof and Zella-Mehlis and the really great range of restaurants on offer, the house is always well attended. There are many cozy, rustic outdoor spaces for the warm days, as well as an interesting picture of the outdoor area with small waterfalls and large wooden figures. So also something for the eye. All in all a great destination.

From the outside the hotel doesn't look particularly inviting. Luckily we booked one in Oberhof. If you go to the toilet after 2 hours of hiking you will be greeted rather rudely. The atmosphere in the restaurant is worse than at a funeral. At least the food looked delicious. Our order was limited to drinks only.

We stopped here for lunch and it was absolutely the right choice! The inn was very well filled and new guests kept coming. The employees absolutely kept calm and were very polite, competent, gave very good advice and also had understanding and a heart for small children! The food was very, very tasty and so was the dessert! Unfortunately I didn't take any photos of it, which I regret very much! I or we can only recommend this inn with its friendly staff and great cuisine and will be happy to come here again on our next trip to the Thuringian Forest!

Spent two nights there to stay overnight. Good starting point for hikes in a great location. Unfortunately, the radiator in the bathroom in room 3 was completely rusted, and the WiFi password was only requested when we asked in the restaurant, only to discover that there was no WiFi in the room. The food in the restaurant is very good, but the price/performance ratio is not right. Addendum I had forgotten, of the 9 channels available on TV, even the public ones were in SD and the picture was terribly bad.

Greetings, In itself, Sternengrund is a particularly great place, especially for the weekend, due to its beautiful location, especially for motorcyclists, and its cream puffs. Unfortunately, more factors play a role in a restaurant and a big one is the service. There are two waitresses here who I have come to appreciate very much because of their funny nature and the excellent service, which is 1+ with an asterisk, all I can say is that. Then the downside is that there is also bad staff, which I have experienced many times, including the last time. No greeting, a long wait and picking up the menus ourselves were part of it. After an annoyed aha and really aggressively removing the lighter, me and my girlfriend decided to leave the restaurant. Because the atmosphere of these two waiters on site was just too negative. The two of them were visibly annoyed when they appeared: a gentleman with a bald head behind the counter, who I had already noticed negatively from previous visits, and an older blonde woman who had also often struck me negatively. People like that destroy places that simply have great potential. My tip is to cancel and find something else instead of being annoyed all day. PS: The cream puffs are awesome, I've finished them all 😁 and can recommend them.

Unfortunately I can't say anything about the hotel itself as I didn't have the pleasure of spending the night there, but I can say something about the staff at the restaurant... My best experiences have been with one waitress, always friendly, always in a good mood, she loves her job and you can tell :) However, yesterday I had a very unpleasant experience when my friend and I were driving home from Zella-Mehlis and thought we could have dinner there. A waiter (bald and male) and a waitress (blonde/gray and a little older) were apparently responsible for the afternoon/evening operations. We weren't greeted and were initially "ignored" or the waiter just watched us and stayed behind the bar. The waitress first talked to another guest and then went behind the bar to get drinks. However, since this process took longer, I got up to get the menu for my friend and I, which was obviously at their "regular place" (where all the cards and cutlery are). On my way back to the table, the waitress apparently came up with the idea of ​​bringing us the cards. However, her eyes darkened and a bad aha followed the fact that we already had cards on hand. The tea light was turned on and then she turned around and, in a rage, panting, climbed down from the pedestal (sat on the rise at the far left of the bar) and threw her lighter on the cupboard to the left of the entrance, which made a nice clatter. We then got up and said goodbye with the words that we won't eat with such rude waiters and the shop shouldn't be surprised that the people might be fewer and regular customers just come back and leave without anything because of one or two waitresses buy if these are not there. This completely drags down the image of the store... By the way, it's not the first time that the bald man ignores his guests. There have been many times when he just does a quick lap outside and then leaves without handing out cards or serving guests. And you blonde is always rude and annoyed. As a side note, leave the job if you don't feel like it... The cream puff is always a treat when I order it with hot raspberries 💕

Cozy little restaurant with a small but good menu. Prices are normal and reasonable. The cream puffs, however, are a true dream for those with a sweet tooth. There is a lot to see there for the children (wood carvings)

We were at the inn for lunch. The service was nice and quick. Fireplace was on. 👍 The portions are sufficient. Unfortunately, ready-made products were often used, for example hollandaise sauce straight from the tetrapak on the vegetables, dumplings unfortunately also pre-packaged, and probably the same with game goulash, as no cook would cut the meat so differently. Unfortunately, only the cheapest round shaped ham was used for the schnitzel with ham gratin. We still tasted it quite well, thanks to the flavor enhancers. But we don't like going to the store for ready-made products, because you expect a bit of culinary art.

The location is fantastic - about halfway between the Panorama-Gotel and Zella-Mehlis. Here you have a great view and a heavenly peace - at least in the morning and evening, when the heater group isn't using the winding route to test the knee pads... At least my room was actually a single room and was crammed with a double bed. The table, which was too small, wasn't actually usable; it was so narrow that a cupboard door couldn't be opened, nor could a bedside table. Here, profit maximization clearly prevailed over hospitality. You couldn't darken the room either, so in summer it's very suitable for early risers... 😬 The room had a musty smell of old carpet and it couldn't be darkened. However, the hygiene was much worse... A handful of dead flies behind the bedside lamp, a ceiling light full of dead insects, everything in the bathroom that was chrome-plated or made of steel was completely filthy, the towel holder was rusty... Special requests for dinner could not be accommodated (I have a problem with pepper); But the breakfast was very plentiful and good (not a buffet, but set for each guest).

Hair in the food, the order was taken incorrectly and the food itself is bland and not fresh. The tables are also dirty, and until the dishes from the previous visit are cleared away, multiple requests are necessary. Absolutely not worth a visit. The snack bar above, on the other hand, is the absolute opposite, nice service, good offerings.

Nice ambience, nice service. Food was good and reasonably priced. However, the cream puff was very dry and when I asked if the cream puff wasn't a little dry, the only response I received was: "the cream puff is always like that." I've never seen a cream puff that can be broken like dry bread. Unfortunately 2 stars deducted for that. So we won't be coming back on our next trip.

Oh, what a beautiful place. We always like to come here when we are in the area. The food is delicious and the price is reasonable. Food rather below average...nothing special in terms of taste... I had Steak ou Four...everything was very unseasoned... Fries were ok...unfortunately there wasn't a salad with it either... The service that is not... Had to wait a long time before anyone even came... after the food came... we weren't asked again if we wanted anything else... Conclusion...again not...there are much better places

Very good hotel with extremely friendly and helpful staff. For motorcyclists there is a good snack with delicious sausages and fried onions.

We haven't been to the Sterngrund grill hut for a few years. It has now been completely rebuilt and made new. It's a shame the old, rustic grill hut is gone and so is the charcoal grill. The be-all and end-all for Thuringian bratwurst. Sausage from straw pigs doesn't help either. The rolls have also changed, the current ones look like the Lidl €0.19 rolls. A pity. We won't take a break here anymore. We cannot recommend the grill station.

Nice location, typical Thuringian cuisine, so everything is okay. But what makes you shake your head is that the boss walks around with the gas burner between the people, burning the wasps that are on the wasp traps at the entrance with a smile on his face and then they fly away stressed out and you get stung. This is useless, pointless, disrespectful to the guests (possibly allergic) who were previously not bothered by the presence of wasps, and ultimately cruelty to animals. I hope he reads this and thinks about just leaving it behind and focusing on more important things and at least using his mind.

Was there to eat, food was very good, although a schnitzel for over €20 is not cheap. However, you get a really big schnitzel for it. Beautiful outdoor area with a stream on the busy road.

Das Rostbrätel war unterirdisch schlecht,hatte überhaupt keinen Geschmack ,total fade und das Fleisch zäh. Man musste kräftig nachwürzen. Auch die Sülze u.die Marinade schmeckten wie aus dem Nettomarkt gekauft. Über den Preis brauch man gleich gar nicht sprechen. Sehr enttäuschend.Weiterempfehlen,können wir das Restaurant aus dem Grund nicht. Sorry!

Unfortunately I can't say anything about the rooms, but I will have lunch there again in 2024 and will be thrilled with the Thuringian dumplings with roulade!!!

I have been visiting this restaurant regularly for about 20 years. It has always been a good address for Thuringian cuisine with cream puffs as a house specialty. The level remains consistently good with usual fluctuations. My wife's cabbage roll was very good and just like home. My neck steak was ok - juicy and tasty, but the cook had to use less salt. The bill is reasonable. The wish for improvement - the tables should be cleaned better - "not just clean, but pure". In any case, it's worth leaving the highway and taking a break here. A little more taste than at the rest stop, good selection of Thuringian dishes and Rennsteig flair.

On the way back from the zoo in Gotha we had dinner there. The service was very attentive and nice. We immediately received a high chair and children's plates. The pork knuckle was very tender and tasty, and the dumplings were also great. At the little ones' request, there was even unicorn ice cream for dessert. We recommend.

Stopped here yesterday to grab a bite to eat. Unfortunately the grill was not open. And we weren't in the mood for sweets. Our grandson wanted ice cream. When he came out a ball fell hetuni. An employee saw it and called him back. Our grandson got a new ball on the house. Thank you very much for that. Maybe have a cream puff on your next visit.

The taste is quite good, but for me a rostbrätl is something different. The staff are very nice and very attentive to children. I wish I had found the time to educate myself about gluten but I saw that there was a lot going on. In this context, I would like to say again how friendly everyone was. And boss, you really need a vacation.

We passed this lovely restaurant by chance. And because we were hungry we went in. We were welcomed by the super friendly waitress “Ophelia” and shown to a nice table for two. The fireplace was burning, which also made it nice and cozy 😊. Our food and the dark beer with it were also very tasty 😋. Ophelia made our stay there even sweeter with her super friendly and funny nature 😄. Very customer oriented!

Really great restaurant in a typical Thuringian atmosphere. In good weather and on Sundays and public holidays, it is advisable to make a reservation by telephone. The giant cream puffs are highly recommended
