Hensoldt Kantine in Ulm

We were absolutely frozen after an organ concert in the unheated cathedral and desperately needed something warm and a toilet. The food was delicious and the service was very friendly. The only downside was that the toilet wasn't at ground level for my mother, who has mobility issues. (But that's a design flaw by the architect and not the café's fault!)

The room is eye-catching, comfortable, warm, almost luxurious. Almost........In fact, the tables are not covered with tablecloths but, like in a diner, with unhygienic placemats, on which are placed plates and cutlery, presumably synthetic. The waiter, when customers leave the table, passes us a sponge and voilà, on to the next. We took advantage of the buffet on 23.XII. 2023 (cost €38 each, €19 children). The choice was wide and of good quality. However, the tray with smoked fish (which was excellent) at 7.30 pm was sadly almost empty and was only refilled when we were leaving. The spoon for the food warmer with "mediterranische gratin" (modest) was encrusted with potatoes, making it difficult to serve oneself, and has remained so. Very much like a GDR restaurant, the fact that the beer served to me was not cold. Ditto the failure to clean up some obvious food debris that had fallen on the carpet by the waiter while he was serving us. The cost of the drinks was, of course, generous. But charging €8.20 for a bottle of water (0.75 cl.) is like a desert raider. When it came time to pay the bill of €230.10, I left only €0.90 to the waiter who had treated us with condescension and inefficiency, perhaps because he considered us modest and inexperienced customers, given that we were not dressed elegantly. This was by far the worst company catering we've ever had. From the very beginning, the extremely unfriendly and irritated staff were striking – there was no sign of any service orientation or friendly smile. They constantly felt like a nuisance. The portions are absolutely outrageous: mini plates that are more reminiscent of appetizers, but certainly not a full lunch. Several colleagues had to buy something else afterward just to feel full. In a professional context, where good food contributes to motivation and performance, this type of catering is completely out of place. Conclusion: I can't recommend it in terms of taste, organization, or staff.

It's a really cool concept in principle, but in my opinion, the execution isn't good enough. I've been there twice now and had similar experiences: the ramen was only lukewarm and the tables weren't clean again. I also waited about half an hour for my soup. I personally find the wooden cutlery a bit unhygienic and would prefer an alternative. All points that I think could easily be improved. I hope they'll address these issues in the future.
