Goldenes Posthorn in Nürnberg

We dined in this fabulous restaurant four times over two weekends. The first three times everything was perfect. The traditional German food, including potato dumplings, was of the fantastic.and the house specialty "red beer" some of the best we've ever had. All the staff was very helpful and friendly. On our fourth visit, as soon as we walked into the restaurant, an elderly man in a bright red vest came up to us and asked us in veey abrupt German, "What do you want here?" Even though I was shocked by his rude tone I remained calm and said in German, a language I speak fluently, that we had eaten there three times before and were looking forward to another great meal. He pointed to an empty table with a very curt gesture. The woman waiter was one who helped us before. When I asked her a question about the menu, the elderly man came back to the table and said indignantly that we were taking too long and he would serve us. When I said we were satisfied with our server, he snatched the menus out of our hands. I said, "We're going!" "Yes, get out!" he replied angrily and escorted us to the door. We are retired Americans who have traveled and lived in Europe and still have not been able to figure out what made this man so angry. It's a real shame as we loved the restaurant and the city, but this occurrence left us with a bad taste in our mouths.

Unfriendly tenants because strollers were not wanted. First they said yes and then they said no, not possible because of the stroller.

Quaint restaurant, food is delicious and hearty (not suitable for vegans). The herbal schnapps is recommended. The service was not only very nice but also brave (was there with non-German speaking colleagues who asked for separate bills...).

There was a Schäufele (pork shoulder on the bone) with potato dumplings and sauerkraut. Great! You almost can't do it better. Kudos to the kitchen! Portion reasonably large. Not too much. Staff authentic, friendly and fast. Recommended!

There for dinner on Saturdays. At first there was no table available so we waited outside at the outside tables. When a table became available inside, the nice lady at the “reception” came and got us in. Everything's fine. After ordering, food was on the table within 10 minutes. That's usually not a good sign, but it was really tasty 😋. Service was attentive and on point. The next day we wanted to stop there again to have a coffee, but despite there being free tables, an older gentleman harshly asked us to leave because we were in the wrong place... something like that doesn't work. Not three times if the website advertises that it is the oldest wine tavern in Germany. All in all 5 stars for Saturday evening and 0 stars for the next day.

Good restaurant in Nuremberg's old town. Seating options for sitting outside or inside. Prices have increased in recent years, a schnitzel is ~19€. Very touristy gastronomy, unfortunately with a lack of service. We sat for 25 minutes until a waiter took care of us. The food came relatively quickly afterwards! The food is tasty and definitely worth a detour.

We had lunch on a weekday. The food is typical of the Nuremberg area, the flavors are authentic and the portions are normal. The staff is helpful and speaks English.

We had a platter for 2 people with bratwurst, duck and Schäufele. There were also dumplings, red cabbage, sauerkraut and sauce. It was simply delicious 😋

The restaurant gave us a very unpleasant experience. Although there were five of us and we ordered 3 dishes and 3 drinks, we were refused service. They even asked us to leave the restaurant in a very rude and disrespectful tone! Such unprofessional and inappropriate behavior is completely unacceptable. We will definitely never come here again and will share this bad experience with others. In addition, the waiter was sweating profusely, which made the whole thing even more unpleasant 🤢

Were there twice in 2 days and again at any time. Nice atmosphere with a great view, delicious food with delicious beer used by fast and friendly staff. Highly recommended and also Germany's oldest wine bar.

So that was by far the best Franconian food I have enjoyed so far. Even without reserving a table, you were seated straight away (lucky you). So thanks again and big praise to everyone who runs the store. I will definitely come back again and again!!!!

We were there for dinner, I also ordered Aperol Spritz, which tasted like water with sparkling wine colored with Aperol. So I went to the bar to complain about what I was served. There I met the owner - Karl Krestel, who instead of listening to me and trying what I got, told me that I had to pay for it anyway and I quote "Raus von hier" I was taken aback and I admit, I didn't think I would hear something like that nowadays ! I had a clear association. We wanted to leave but we had just received our ordered food. After a dozen or so minutes, Mr. Krestel brought me a new drink but without saying sorry and he probably did it at the request of his wife, who witnessed the whole incident and was very nice to us when we were sitting at the table. The new drink was completely different from the first one and tasted like an Aperol Spritz should. The service, apart from the "boss", was also friendly. I am writing this because I was very hurt by the way the owner behaved towards the customers, something like this should not happen anywhere!!!! I have worked in the hotel and catering industry for over 30 years and this is not how guest service should be!

The older gentleman mentioned by others was very unfriendly because we had the day before The table was moved from the inside to the outside and we had the approval of an employee. “In it or not at all”. He was definitely the first winner in the restaurateurs' unfriendliness competition. But his staff was fine. Food was ok but not really hot. There will be no repeat of the reception.

Franconian specialties in a touristy (right next to Sebald's Church) but very nice atmosphere. Cozy dining rooms and sheltered outdoor spaces when the weather is nice. Very friendly hosts and staff - we are regular guests there and always like to come back.

Very tasty food in a good location. We sat outside and ordered Schäuferle. Unfortunately, there were a lot of flies with the food, which is why we couldn't enjoy the food.

I loved the visit to this traditional Franconian inn! The food was delicious, especially the duck leg and peppers with the homemade dumplings. But what really stood out was the exceptionally friendly and attentive service - a rare and very welcome surprise in this region. An absolutely recommended place for a culinary experience and friendly atmosphere!

More than just good, absolutely perfect, everything! The best bread dumplings I've ever eaten! I am a Nuremberg resident and not a tourist. That's why I can always recommend this restaurant if you want something really good, German food and don't want it to be brutally overpriced. If I'm in the city center, this is a better price than in the surrounding area.

Beautiful place, historical ambience, with a view of the wonderful church. The service was very courteous and attentive, the food came quickly and was delicious. I had boiled beef with horseradish sauce and dumplings! Absolute recommendation! Gladly again!

I advise everyone to avoid this restaurant! Never in my life have I/we been treated so disrespectfully and aggressively. Our waiter was on the run and literally threw the menus on the table for us (group of 4). We wanted to order drinks and food, but in the middle of ordering he turns around and walks away without a word. When he comes back to order the food he says: “It’s over, you have to order something else”. And immediately turns back. He's coming back and we chose again: "That's over too". On the third attempt (there wasn't much left on the menu) we wanted to order sausages, but asked to change the side dish due to gluten intolerance. We couldn't even say it, because it was already said: “There are no extra requests”. After we placed a new order, slightly annoyed, the waiter ended it with: “You don’t have to eat here.” Which he was right about! We didn't want to spend the evening with such unfriendly service. We immediately decided to cancel the food order. However, we had already received the drinks (2 beers + 2 water bottles), so we paid for them directly - the waiter commented when paying: “we already have the next ones for the table”. An older lady (tenant?) kindly came and wanted to explain the situation. It was ok for us at the moment and we wanted to finish our drinks and then leave. But this is where the drama only began. An older gentleman (owner?) became condescending and aggressive towards us. We should leave the table immediately, he needs it for others. He insulted and threatened us: “Sneak away / otherwise you'll get problems with me / you think you're a big guy / you a****”. He made it clear that he did not depend on us as customers and that many others were waiting. I've never experienced anything like this. In the meantime, I was very worried that he would get violent towards us. On a service level as well as on a human level, I am shocked and speechless about this behavior.

German cuisine and service too... We had the chance to taste a kilometric Schnietzel and a sort of large gnocchi stuffed with sausage meat (and the menu states that this dish only exists here)... N 'let's forget the view of the church and the photos with President Chirac in the cellar.... We highly recommend this address

Food itself was good. Unfortunately I had a pretty big animal in my food. After my complaint I was given a free coffee, but was told that this can happen with a mushroom dish. I think that says everything about the cleanliness. That's not possible and no one has apologized for it. The staff was semi-friendly, everything is designed for profit. The ambience, however, was quite nice.

The Scheufele is simply perfect.

Very short visit. We had just arrived with a travel buggy and our two children, asked the waitress if we could sit down and an old man promptly told us we weren't allowed to go here because the travel buggy was in the way. I then asked to be allowed to arrive first so that I could then move the buggy out of the way or fold it up. The old fart then says it's not free here anyway, to which I reply that my colleague just said something different. To which he says, it's just the employee and he's the boss. Very very rude guy, spoiled by the tourist crowds, we preferred to go to another restaurant. The boys from the next table immediately wanted to leave and eat somewhere else, and we were obviously not the only ones who found the behavior very strange

Typically Bavarian inn! Good cuisine! Nice service!

The location is very nice in the middle of the old town, not far from the castle. Unfortunately, the table we were given was so slanted that the sauce ran off the plate. The price for 6 Nuremberg sausages and dry bread was completely overpriced. The salad and the stir-fry were very tasty. The service was a disaster. The waiter was obviously completely overwhelmed and the two bosses just stood around. I would have liked to have another beer and order dessert, but the service just took too long. Good people are obviously hard to find in the restaurant industry.

Excessive prices for average food

What I ate was not cheese spaetzle but cream spaetzle. Way too much cream, no cheese or spaetzle taste. The service staff simply asked a return question about how the food was (the plate was still almost full, I couldn't eat) but he didn't wait for the answer and immediately left with the plate. Since there was a lot going on on the terrace, the looks made you feel like you had to get up and leave when you were done eating. Priced above average. The beer was good. But that's the only pro. Unfortunately my expectations were not met. A pity.

The food is good but the waiter got very annoying at the end demanding a tip, the treatment was very uncomfortable.

This restaurant is run by the most antisocial waiters in Nuremberg and surroundings. It is the number 1 tourist trap in the city. Be warned before you enter. The waiters will speak to you rudely, they will make you wait and eventually they will try to rip you off. Zero stars.

This is the only restaurant where I haven't checked to see what the reviews are like. All the rest were rated much higher. Nevertheless, it was only here that I got a really good schnitzel and was completely satisfied, just like in Vienna or at home. Portion as it should be, the first time we absolutely couldn't finish it. Liver dumplings very good, soup with it also very OK. Tafelspitz (or similar, just called differently) was good, I would have tolerated a little more side dish (i.e. horseradish), mustard, etc. but I still had a good experience. Service also nice.

For 6 bratwursts plank on the plate and served carelessly for 13 euros + 3 euros per side dish, that's a pretty decent number, as a real Nuremberg native it's not recommended for eating out, it might be ok with a beer. Tourist groups are bad - they only come once, also a concept...

In 30 degree heat, I sat down at a table in the shade of a tree without an umbrella. The waiter in the photo rudely told me to choose another table in the sun because... Several people MAY come. My presence did not matter to him and he showed no respect. This is the first time in 10 years of traveling around Germany that they answered me so rudely. I do not recommend being served by the waiter in the photo.

Very tasty food - I had spaetzle, very nice staff, would like to come again.

The place was recommended by German colleagues and it can really go back to a long history as it is written on the website. I tasted a couple of local beers and a red wine. Nothing special. I might have reached out to him for the food too, because the recommendation that they only prepare this kind of food at their place is convincing. Knodel stuffed with some kind of sausage meat. Unfortunately, it was quite spicy with marjoram and it didn't taste like that.

We loved this place. The dishes were exquisite and the place was beautiful. We had dinner on the terrace, but the interior for colder months is wonderful.

Wenn man hier als Gast mit Kindern auftaucht, dann sehen die Pächter komplett rot. Da werden Gäste in einer Art und Weiße weggeschickt, welche ihresgleichen in Nürnberg kein zweites Mal zu finden ist. Man wird gegenüber den Gästen regelrecht bösartig und unverschämt frech, sogar ausfallend. Und das alles nur, weil man bei gut einem Drittel freier Tische um 19:45 lediglich etwas trinken und nicht essen möchte. Grundlegend ist das Essen hier Recht gut und dem überteuerten Preisniveau von Nürnberg durchaus angepasst. Wir waren immer mal wieder zu Gast hier, das ist aber jetzt vorbei und ich kann nur jedem empfehlen, einen Bogen um diese Gaststätte zu machen...

It was recommended to us by the owner of our hotel. We had a very good time, various and tasty typical dishes, fast service. Special thanks to Marius who served us two evenings in a row. Having someone who speaks to you in Italian when you have to order and explains the various dishes is a very welcome extra.🍻

The homemade lemonade is super tasty and refreshing

My foreign friends wanted to eat Schäufele, so the restaurant was recommended to me. Even though we arrived without a reservation, we got a table. The waitress and waiter were super friendly. The food and wine were excellent. The Schäufele was first class. My friends had a very good experience. Thank you. Always my pleasure.

Great place for traditional German cuisine. We had a plate for two people with pork Schäufele, dumplings, sausages, duck and of course sauerkraut.

There were 6 Nurembergers on the plate and that was it. The bread served with it appeared to be from last month. Waitress dropped glass... Shards were left lying around, only the rough ones were cleared away.

Service was quick, but overall average.

Unfortunately, our visit to the Golden Posthorn showed us that the catering industry in Nuremberg is trying to keep its head above water in what we think is a very unpleasant way. As we were still about to sit down, the traditionally dressed older lady of the house asked us with a sharp look if we wanted to eat something, but apparently drinking was strictly forbidden! While we actually dutifully ate our food, a kind of "outdoor pantomime" took place between the service staff and her under the strict eyes of the lady in question: Sit down, eat, pay, GO! We weren't actually planning on staying in the restaurant for a long time, but we were planning on eating in peace. It's a shame and I think it's not necessary at this intensity. Nanna Prell

Unfortunately, a complete failure. There are drunk people in front of the bar talking loudly and disrupting the entire atmosphere. In addition, the courtyard offers no ambience outside. There are just loveless old tables and chairs standing around - this could really be better! The staff is over-friendly and very pushy. If you don't have a drink request after 30 seconds, the staff is visibly annoyed. The knives and forks are ancient and clearly show signs of wear - that's a NO GO! Personally, I didn't like the food at all. You are much better off elsewhere.

We absolutely LOVED this restaurant. Perfect Bavarian / Nuremberger food, taste sensations, wonderful beer, gorgeous outlook, and amazing staff. What more could you want? Found this restaurant Goldener Posthorn in the Lorenzekircheplatz, next to Lorenzekirche. It was quite warm.hot on the day, and the place looked inviting with chairs and tables under the trees. We'd noticed it the night before with pretty fairy lights in the tall tree overhead. I also loved the flower boxes which made a pretty ring around the tables. Sitting down, we were greeted by super friendly Geri, (I hope that is how he spells his name.) All wait staff at this restaurant were wonderful, but we were lucky enough to be served by this man, who was professional, attentive, friendly and gave some excellent suggestions. On our first visit, we intended only to try Nuremberger Red Beer, (which was delicious by the way). However Geri also suggested we try another, which was even nicer! We were enjoying the outlook to the lovely kirche so much, and the atmosphere was so pleasant, we decided to stay for dinner. What a great move! We chose something we would not ever have tried at home, something very different. Roast Beef with Gingerbread sauce, paired with a potato dumpling, and sauerkraut with apple. It rates in the top 3 of meals I have ever had anywhere in the world. While presentation does not rank highly in German cuisine, taste does. The taste was out of this world. Meat that fell apart on a touch, so tender, and the sauce was something I would give my right arm to try again. (I did in fact go back and have the same thing the next day). The price was sensible, not expensive, the service amazing, the view and atmosphere wonderful. People obviously like it there because it was full at dinner time. We never had a seat indoors, but it looked lovely inside too. I can totally recommend this lovely Nuremberger restaurant, right in the middle of the old town, and congratulate it's wonderful staff, particularly Geri, on making our stay at Goldener Posthorn the most memorable meals we had in Germany.

Unfortunately I can't rate the food because after politely asking for a table other than the one offered in the entrance area, we were immediately turned away from the restaurant by a very unfriendly older gentleman. He said, "We would still think of him if we had a bad meal somewhere else." Nothing like this has ever happened to us before. We then had a delicious meal!

For 12 Nuremberg bratwursts, which is common in the city, 6 Nuremberg sausages were collected twice. Brazen!

At lunchtime I stopped on the terrace with a view of St. Sebald. The service was very friendly and my food tasted very good. I was completely satisfied.

Everything was fine :) Unfortunately the terrace is a bit slanted, so the table and chairs are a bit wobbly.

When other restaurants were turning people with no reservations, this place was available with welcoming owners at the door! Many locals and tourist. Wonderful German cuisine and drink selection. Food was delicious!!
