Gasthaus Watzmann in Berchtesgaden

Worth a visit on any trip to Berchtesgaden or the surrounding area. The food is delicious! I'm already looking forward to my little roast pork :) Here are a few impressions from 2025/2024

The food is top-notch and unbeatable for the price. It's just a shame there are no more rooms available. Still highly recommended.

Portions were small, very expensive, and the heating was off... it was very cold. We had to eat in our winter jackets. The toilets were very dirty. Overall, rather poor!

A top-notch inn with a wonderful, typical Bavarian atmosphere. The service was excellent and friendly, and the food was absolutely delicious. We ordered schnitzel with fries, Bavarian sausage salad, and Bavarian beef stew with potatoes. Everything was incredibly tasty and highly recommended.

We've been visiting this inn for decades, every time we're in Berchtesgaden. This time, however, we noticed that even after the All Saints' Day service, there were hardly any guests. When we discovered that the pork knuckle, which we usually enjoy, cost €30 this time, we opted for an alternative meal. It was still quite good. The inn's decor and atmosphere are definitely a reason to come back next time.

We really enjoyed it - we had the broth with dumplings and the jerky with raisins and apple sauce. The portion was huge, we almost couldn't finish it between the two of us - very good and filling. The local beer was also good. The restaurant is very cozy and wonderfully decorated.

The food is good, home-style fare. There's an extensive menu with Bavarian specialties like roast pork, Leberkäse (meatloaf), bread dumplings, and classics like schnitzel, cordon bleu, and fried potatoes. Fish dishes are also served. The inn has a rustic decor, and the staff is friendly, even when they're busy. It was very busy on Friday and Saturday when we visited, so reservations are recommended. There's a beer garden in the entrance area. Prices are reasonable; we didn't have dessert. We weren't staying at the hotel.

The service was very friendly, pleasant, accommodating, and very prompt. The food was incredibly delicious, good, home-style cooking. We'll definitely be back on our next vacation. The roast pork and bread dumplings were a dream.

I recommend turkey strips on salad in sezame and honey sauce at less than 20 eur.

We went there for dinner on Sunday evening. The service was quick and attentive, 3 stars! The food, unfortunately, doesn't get above 1 star. We both ordered Cordon Bleu with fried potatoes. Garnished with a thin strip of peeled carrot. We've rarely received such a lackluster plate. We wonder how some people can consider something like that classy... The Cordon Bleu tasted like fried convenience food, the fried potatoes were okay. All in all, the exorbitant prices (like the whole place) aren't worth it. You can tell you're in a tourist hotspot. Much profit for little effort.

Upon our arrival to town in the afternoon this was our first stop for beers in the afternoon. We sat outside and soaked up the atmosphere and the staff was really nice. That night we decided to go back for dinner and it was OUTSTANDING! The best meal I had in our 4 days in Bavaria. Pork medallions were incredible! Definitely give this restaurant a try you won't be disappointed.

We only ate dinner there one evening. We were served very quickly, and the staff was friendly. It's small and cozy. The prices are a bit high for a regular schnitzel. Without a reservation, there might not be enough space, so book in advance.

One star is far too many for this restaurant. The beer garden is beautifully designed, but that's about it... At around 7:30 p.m., it wasn't busy; I estimated 25-30% of the tables were occupied, so it wasn't a stressful situation. Nevertheless, we were left sitting for ages without any attention - but they had already seen us when we arrived. The waiters were leisurely clearing the tables and chatting away. After well over half an hour, my husband went up to a waitress and told her we'd like to order. Only after the second request was our drink order finally taken. We already knew what we wanted because we'd read the menu at the entrance, but someone else was supposed to take our food order. We waited forever again for the drinks, which were then brought by the manager, who also took our order. No apology, nothing... She just said there were only two of them, and then it just took longer :( The food arrived relatively quickly, placed on the table without comment by another waitress. I had to call after her because she only brought one regular and one small roast pork without cabbage. We had ordered two regular-sized roasts with salad instead of cabbage. She then said grumpily, "Salad is coming!" She didn't react at all to the one incorrect portion size (child's portion). The salad finally arrived when we were almost finished eating. And now for the meal itself: The dumplings were only lukewarm, the meat was okay, the sauce was simply awful (a thin, brownish salty broth), and the salad tasted of nothing but vinegar. The hostess asked me while clearing the table and taking the money, whether I'd enjoyed it, but didn't respond at all to my "Meh" comment. But I really didn't have any on vacation. Feeling like having a long discussion, I didn't say anything else, we paid, and that was it. Normally, I would have complained about the quality and the poor service......... CONCLUSION: Normally, we would have left the restaurant simply because of the long wait. But unfortunately, there were no seats available at any of the other restaurants, so we stayed. We had been hiking all day and were very hungry. We really had no choice but to stay. NEVER AGAIN!!! - NO RECOMMENDATION!!! Simply BAD in every respect!!!

Dumplings with chanterelles: a few chanterelles in tomato sauce, and a bit mushy. On the other hand, spinach dumplings with Parmesan and fries were very tasty. Service was attentive, the ambiance was rustic and a bit dated.

Staff was friendly. The food wasn't worth the money. I had a mixed salad with turkey. Unfortunately, there was nothing mixed in it. Just iceberg lettuce and three pieces of bell pepper. A real shame.

Kaiserschmarrn was somehow "a la ready-mixed", the cordon bleu was also dripping with fat, cleanliness at the table was catastrophic...... I can unfortunately not recommend it

We went there for lunch today and were greeted warmly, as was our dog. They even brought a water bowl and treats for our dog. The waitresses were very attentive and kind. The food (onion roast beef and cordon bleu) was freshly prepared and delicious. The portion sizes were generous. The fried potatoes served with it were also good. It was our first time eating there and we will definitely return on our next trip to Berchtesgaden.

Unfortunately, I was very disappointed today. I ordered a shandy and a blackcurrant spritzer, which arrived quickly and was delicious. After a 45-minute wait, we moved on to dessert... there were maybe 10 people sitting in the restaurant... so it was pretty empty. Poppy seed and curd dumplings with plum compote (sadly, a total failure... the plum compote was thin as water, plus the plum stones were thick). The apple strudel was warm and OK. But it wasn't a star either. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed. The service was friendly and pleasant.

One of the worst experiences. My roast beef with onions smelled sour, and after the first bite, I had to spit it out because the meat was spoiled. We were looking forward to our lunch. Since we had picked it up, I called to let the restaurant know. What happened next is almost beyond words. The landlady (I assume) came at me like greased lightning to berate me, saying that if I didn't like it, I couldn't try it, and that I only knew Knorr. In fact, I've never used Knorr once in my life. I wasn't offered an alternative dish; she already had the exact money in her hand and told me we should never eat or order from her again. Without a doubt, we would never have considered it. Completely unprofessional, unfriendly, a terrible experience. I can only advise against visiting this restaurant.

We're only stranded for dinner today. The seating is comfortable, the service unprofessional, but very friendly. The food wasn't restaurant quality; the side dishes were sparse, the presentation mediocre, the fried potatoes were lukewarm, and the meat mediocre. Would have been okay for half the price. Why am I writing this review? I'll be back sometime, and I want to experience a culinary blast. You certainly can.

We happened upon a meal there by chance. The waitresses and owner were very friendly to our children and our dog. The food was also very good and, considering the downtown location, fairly priced.

Cozy inn. Delicious food in a feel-good atmosphere. We stopped here after a hike. Three very nice and courteous ladies worked in the restaurant. In particular, the boss probably entertained the guests with funny anecdotes and a great manner. The food came quickly and tasted excellent. We'd love to come back.

Unfortunately, I was very disappointed. I ordered a cream of potato soup—at least, that's what they called it. The soup, however, was anything but creamy; it was completely tasteless and watery. When I told the waitress this, there was virtually no response. She simply asked if I hadn't finished the soup because the portion was too large. I explained that I didn't like it at all and that it was unfortunately very tasteless. Again, there was no response. For my main course, I had the Cordon Bleu with fries. It wasn't anything special, but it was okay. However, the waitress was often long gone, so we were often left with empty glasses. We also wanted dessert, but after a long wait, we lost interest and paid instead—also after a long wait. To top it all off, I still had to pay for the soup. They could have at least offered an alternative or made a concession to the customer. In my opinion, not a recommendation and nothing special.

Well, we were there for lunch in September when the weather was great. It was during the week and not much going on. The waitress was friendly, but it took a long time. My cheese spaetzle tasted of nothing and was very mushy. With a lot of salt they were OK, but nothing more. We expected more here

Beautiful inn with rustic Bavarian furnishings. The service was friendly and attentive. There are parking spaces in front of the inn and the location is completely okay. Not every restaurant can be in the countryside. The food wasn't all that great. Selling turkey steak hard and dry to death and a vegetable pan with a few cubes of meatloaf as "Bavarian Pfand'l" takes some imagination.

It's centrally located, but you don't have a nice view or hear the street. We didn't like the food at all. The sauce from the goulash was very thick and tasteless, I was looking for the meat. The gravy for the dumpling wasn't gravy, it didn't taste like meat and was very transparent. We're not gourmets, but the three of us didn't like it.

I was last evening here, unfortunatelly i was dissapointed, they are understaffed and you have to wait too long to order something, or after to get even your drinks. My meal was ok, but the dessert(Kaiserschmarn) was nothing, too thick, undercooked, by sides was burned, wasn't fluffy...i am sorry, but first and last time...

There was no Kaiserschmarrn due to the large number of guests. On the grill plate, the vegetables were only lukewarm, the herb butter was frozen and for €30 I would have expected a lot more meat. Otherwise it was fine if we had gotten drinks later.

Bad service, not attentive. When we asked if it was tasty and we said no, there was no response regarding feedback; on the contrary, they wanted to pack the food for us. All the dishes didn't really taste good. Pork medallion over fried, cheese spaetzle tasteless. Kaiserschmarren was dry and had way too much rum flavor in it. Not edible! Just way too expensive for the price. It's a shame, the restaurant is well located and the inside is as rustic as you would imagine. But not recommended due to the food.

Rustic, cozy Bavarian inn above the center of Berchtesgaden Wood paneling radiates a pleasant atmosphere. Maybe a little too many hunting trophies and decorations. The menu is extensive and down-to-earth, and the prices are quite high. The beer comes from Hofbräu Berchtesgaden and is therefore excellent. Conclusion: Bavarian-cozy, price level too high (perhaps too aimed at tourists)

Extremely friendly service and very good food.

We said goodbye yesterday The Watzmann Wirtshaus received quite positive reviews. None of our dishes blew us away. The medallions were dry, the cheese spaetzle was tasteless. The grill plate and the delicacies plates weren't convincing either. The service was not attentive. Even when the food was delivered and the glasses were empty, there was no question as to whether we wanted new drinks. One of the waitresses constantly wore her cell phone around her neck - that seemed really unprofessional. We give it a benevolent 3 stars and would like to check on our next visit to see if anything has changed 😊

We stopped in for lunch and ordered our beloved onion roast. Unfortunately very tough and somewhat carelessly prepared. We were quite disappointed and it was too expensive.
