It's a shame, but it should be said, applies to this, to an employee: July 30, 2025, in the morning, it's raining, the Pappenheimer is empty except for one customer at the bar. Good morning, do you have breakfast? The lady behind the bar looks at me blankly, no greeting, nothing, corner of her mouth down: "Scrambled eggs, fried eggs." Okay, do you also have rolls or sausage? Unchanged: "Scrambled eggs, fried eggs." Okay, where can we sit? Not a word, just a vague gesture toward the front tables. Which one should we take? Answer: "They're all the same." I venture an objection: There's a table for three, a table for four, and even larger ones.....Reply with a shake of the head and, turning around/walking away, "Just take any one." We left. All the other cafes were packed...why?

If you are looking for something comfortable and reasonably priced in Saalfeld, you have come to the right place. Right next to the market, where you'd look in vain for a similar location, you'll find the "Pappenheimer" on a side street. The staff are really friendly and try to find a suitable spot based on the number of people. Luckily, we had a reservation, as it can get really busy at lunchtime. The menu is concise, but there's something delicious for everyone. From fries with nuggets for the kids to schnitzel with boiled potatoes to trout, you can enjoy Thuringian cuisine here. Everything on the menu is highly recommended. The Sauerbraten with dumplings, my personal favorite, came with delicious crispy breadcrumbs in the center, just like in grandma's day. Drinks arrived really quickly after ordering, as did the food, which, of course, arrived at the table immediately after the preparation time. The decor looks very well-maintained and is filled with great attention to detail and memories from bygone eras. The famous "Schiffsrinne" counter was unfortunately out of service, but you can find more information on the website. The restrooms are clean and don't smell. There's also an upper floor where there's enough space for a smaller party. We didn't need the rooms, so we can't comment on them, but we've only heard good things. So, anyone looking for something similar will be in good hands here; we highly recommend it.

The Pappenheimer is located not far from the parking lot on a side street. The cozy interior immediately makes you feel at home. Visitors to this restaurant can expect very friendly staff and, above all, delicious food, including a large appetizer. However, you should plan your visit and pre-order, as the Pappenheimer is apparently very popular. Rabbit liver with salad.

Delicious Thuringian dishes. I went there for Sunday lunch on my sister's recommendation. Everything was perfect, friendly service, and delicious food. It would be a shame if the restaurant were to close.

Unfortunately, the opening hours online did not match those on site. It is also unclear why the store is closed from 2 p.m.

I had the pleasure of staying overnight here and enjoying an asparagus menu. What can I say, everything was simply perfect! I'd love to come back and am already looking forward to breakfast tomorrow.

Our rating only applies to the restaurant as we did not stay overnight. We stopped by here spontaneously for lunch and were seated without making a reservation. The service was very friendly, the food was very good and the prices were okay. We'd love to come back when we're in Saalfeld again.

Leider zwei mürrische, schlechtgelaunte Bedienungen! Zum Sauerbraten (der lecker war) gab es nur trockene böhmische Knödel und einen Salat. Das extra Rotkraut (ca.2 Esslöffel) wurde mit 4,50€ extra berechnet. Wir wurden nicht beraten und aufs bezahlen haben wir ewig gewartet. Hab schon besseres erlebt. Die sehen mich nicht wieder!

Great staff, absolutely friendly and in a very good mood at work. Food was very tasty and really big portions. You feel in good hands and the prices are very fair for the current status of April 2025.

We only ate here, so the review only refers to the inn. A great, rustic inn in a central location with classic East German cuisine. The menu is small and clear, the food is without a lot of fancy, but all the more delicious. The staff was friendly and authentic to the atmosphere. We'd love to come back when we're in the area again.

Top hospitality, always recommended 👌

We came across this quaint inn by chance and were extremely lucky to find room for four people. Reservation is a must. The food is traditional, very good and plentiful. We were completely at peace. The only drawback is if you are no longer able to walk so well. The toilets are on the upper floor. Parking is three minutes away. This inn is highly recommended.

We also ate here for the first time today and were thrilled with the leg of lamb and the dumplings, which I couldn't do better. In addition, the service was always friendly despite the many guests. We will definitely recommend it to others and of course we will come again ourselves.

Very good Thuringian cuisine and service-oriented employees

A couple of years after my original review, i have to change it. This was, in fact, our go to place in Saalfeld for a while, whenever we made the hour long trip. Unfortunately, last night was our last time eating here. The food is good, but nothing you can't get 100 other places - we went for the friendly service and the atmosphere. Without that there is no point. I made a reservation almost two weeks before hand for a particular table (it's tucked away in a nook on the stairs, it is quieter and special), it was for a birthday dinner... which is why i called extra early and made sure to secure this particular table. When we arrived - at 6 when they open - they said they were giving away that table to a party of 3, and since we were 2 they moved us to a smaller table. Actually, one very loud and cramped next to the coat rack, so we were constantly bumped by people clamoring in and out of their jackets. When i reminded them I'd specially reserved the other table, they were very rude. It was astonishing. It seems that the extra few dollars they earned giving away that table to seat one more person, regardless of a standing reservation, was worth losing customers. To be honest, a very disappointing experience. Without the friendly service and groovy atmosphere this place loses its spark, and has lost some customers. There are many other delicious and friendlier places to choose from in Saalfeld. This was my original review: This place was great! Lovely interior and atmosphere, the people working there were so friendly and helpful!! We brought a guest from the US and it was a great choice. We recently moved to the area and this will definitely be our "go-to" place in Saalfeld! Thanks to everyone working there for wonderful experience!

We had a Christmas party at your place and I was there with a baby in tow. When I asked, I was immediately given the option to change diapers and breastfeed and the service was also super friendly. Food was also great! Thanks for the hospitality!

It was my first time eating there and I loved it. I haven't eaten something so delicious in a long time. The restaurant is highly recommended and in my opinion the prices are even too cheap. The service was consistently friendly and attentive. I'd love to come back next time I'm in Saalfeld. I can't say anything about the rooms, I was only in the restaurant.

We were guests in this familiar and informal house from December 20th, 2024 to December 22nd, 2024 and felt very comfortable from the first moment. The rooms (we had the "West" room) are clean, decently sized and comfortably furnished. An extra sofa also makes staying during the day comfortable. The restaurant is still run by a couple of innkeepers of a rare caliber. The menu doesn't need to be described as overloaded and no matter what you choose, everything is plentiful and very tasty - praise to the kitchen! The breakfast table was deliciously set and there were finally products (the sausage not from industrial packaging) from regional producers, also rare!!! In terms of price, you are ultimately treated very fairly.👍 Many thanks to the host couple and see you next year!!!

We spent a few nights at the Pappenheimer. Rooms have everything you need. It's clean and cozy. The breakfast was very good with everything your heart desires. It is very cozy in the restaurant. A small menu with good dishes invites you to linger. The food is very tasty and the staff is always very friendly. We would love to come back.

Sehr schönes und uhriges Gasthaus das Essen war sehr lecker das Personal super freundlich. Was ich auch super fand es gab nur eine kleine Speisekarte mit ca 10 Gerichten aber das reicht.

Essen war wirklich top , leider war die Bedienung anscheinend schlecht gelaunt.

Ich war zum Mittagessen da und es ist eine sehr schöne Gaststube sehr originelle Ausstattung. Ein bißchen verwinkelt doch das macht es gerade sympathisch. Leider könnte man in der Küche einiges besser machen,nur eine Sache (Schnitzel vorbraten und dann noch mal in Butter aufwärmen bzw braten geht garnicht)

Das Essen ist einfach nur Spitze,egal was man isst. Kann man nur empfehlen.

Wir waren mit den Enkeln dort essen. Ich kann nur sagen das Personal so freundlich und nett. Wir waren begeistert da es keine Kindergerichte gab wurde uns ein Essen geteilt für 2 Kinder. Wir können nur sagen es war ein gelungener Besuch. Die Einrichtung urig und gemütlich das Essen lecker und vom Preis Leistungsverhältnis nicht zu toppen, gern wieder. Zimmer können wir leider nicht beurteilen.

Hier trifft man auf eine sehr freundliche und zuvorkommende Bedienung trotz vieler Gäste, und ein leckeres Essen . Die Atmosphäre ist entspannt und gemütlich im Lokal. Deshalb ist dieses Restaurant auch sehr beliebt und eine Vorbestellung ratsam. Wir kommen gerne wieder.

ganz tolle Wirtsleute --- sehr saubere Zimmer und Gaststätte ---- bei jeglichen Fragen ist auch außerhalb der Öffnungszeiten jemand erreichbar (passiert sehr selten) ---- ein wirklich sehr reichhaltiges Frühstück, mit allem was das Herz begehrt --- Parkplatz in mitten der Stadt vor dem Hause ----- nur zu empfehlen

Das Gasthaus hat eine kleine aber gute Speisekarte. Und das Essen schmeckt sehr gut. Das Personal ist, auch wenn der Laden voll ist und sie wenig Zeit haben, immer nett und freundlich. Die Pensionzimmer sind stilvoll eingerichtet und mit dem freigelegtem Fachwerk wirklich schon ein kleiner Hingucker. Das einzige Manko ist die schmale Wendeltreppe, die nicht für jedermann ist.

Wir haben dort "nur" gegessen, vom Service, über die Qualität des Essens, alles war sehr gut und hat so geschmeckt wie es sein soll. Es gab Sauerbraten und Thüringer Klöße mit ausreichend Sauce, die man jederzeit hätte nach bestellen können. Dann gab es ein Thüringer Rodtbrät'l sehr gute Empfehlung und vorneweg gab es eine Soljanka, die man so auch nicht überall bekommt; ziemlich authentisch. Zum Abschluss eine Crème Brulée, sollte man immer nehmen. Uns hat es sehr gut gefallen und falls es uns mal wieder nach Saalfeld verschlägt: immer wieder gerne.

Mit 5 Personen ohne Reservierung einen tollen Platz im Obergeschoss bekommen. Parkplatz genau vor dem Haus, Speisen und Getränke sehr gut und preiswert. Bestens zu empfehlen.

Nach einem stressigen Tag haben wir uns ein schönes Abendessen gegönnt. Einen Tisch bestellt und super bewirtet worden. Sehr urig und originell. Die Küche klasse. Hier stimmt Preis Leistung auf jeden Fall. Als Tourist muss man sich das echt mal ansehen. Toll. Macht weiter so. Wir kommen auf jeden Fall wieder.

Ich war 3 Nächte mit Frühstück im Pappenheimer und möchte mich recht herzlich für die tolle Bewirtung bedanken. Das Zimmer war sehr groß, sauber und ruhig, mit vielen Handtücher und Waschlappen vieles mehr. Und das Frühstück war sehr ausreichend, von allen was dabei. Wurst, Käse, Joghurt, Actimel, Obst, Ei, Kaffee, kaltes Getränk und viele leckere Brötchen. Für mich ist klar, wenn ich wieder in der Heimat bin dann nur im Pappenheimer. Danke 💐

Das Ambiente ist einfach großartig. So stellt man sich ein Wirtshaus im 19. Jeder vor. stilvoll eingerichtet, nicht abgehoben und sehr gemütlich.

Es war sehr gut besucht, aber wir wurden mit Wartezeit gerne empfangen. Alle höflich und nett in der kleinen urigen Gaststätte mit Tresen zum verweilen. Eine wunderbare Karte mit regionalen Produkten, hier ist Fleisch vom Bauernhof Qualität. Wir haben sehr gut gegessen und der Nachtisch ist zu empfehlen. Das Kellerbier passt zum Essen. Kompliment an Küche und Personal, ihr seid perfekte Gastgeber. Es wurde sogar noch Soße angeboten 👏. Thüringer Küche zum genießen.

Wow… Wir sind durch Zufall hier gelandet. So eine tolle Wirtschaft .. einfach toll. Das Essen ist der Wahnsinn. Preis Leistung .. einfach super. Tolle Küche und das Personal absolut freundlich und auf Zack. Wer was anderes scheibt, soll sich weiter von Mutti bekochen lassen😂😂😂👍. Bleibt so wie ihr seid👍.

Ausgezeichnetes Essen. Gemütliches Gasthaus

Eine sehr liebevoll eingerichtete Gaststätte. Das Essen ist einfach köstlich und in großen Mengen. Der Service ist top und die Bedienung immer super nett und herzlich. Das Zimmer ist sehr sauber und hat alles was man benötigt. Das Frühstück bekommt man nach Ansprache zur gewünschten Uhrzeit, ist liebevoll zubereitet und lässt keine Wünsche offen. Dazu liegt die Wirtschaft sehr zentral und man ist in 2 Minuten zu Fuß auf dem Marktplatz. Von uns gibt es eine klare Empfehlung. Sind nun schon das 2. Mal hier und kommen mit Sicherheit wieder.

Nur für die ganz freundliche Bedienung und das Ambiente bekommt das Restaurant 2 Sterne von uns. Die Kellnerin und der Mann in der Bar sind wirklich sehr nett! Der Rotkohl ist sehr schwer zu machen und denen ist leider nicht gelungen, geschmacklos. Das Steak “well done”, war ziemlich zart jedoch mit Textur mehr wie gekocht als wie gebraten. Die Musik von MDR Jump passt gar nicht zu dem schönen Raum. 7. Platz auf der Tripadvisor-Liste, noch Verbesserungen möglich.

Mit Verwanden aus Norderstedt treffen 2 Tage in Saalfeld ,bei guten Abendessen, schneller ,sowie freundlicher Bedienung ,auch Frühstück sehr gut ,auch gemütliche Einrichtung, leider ist das Parken ein Problem als Hotelgast

Wir waren schon häufiger zu Gast. Wir würden nie enttäuscht. Es ist eigentlich immer gut besucht. Es war mal eine Musikkneipe. Das Flair ist immer noch zu spüren.

Absolut empfehlenswertes Restaurant im Zentrum von Saalfeld. Gemütliche Gaststube mit sehr freundlichem Personal.

Tolle Atmosphäre. Auch während der Woche ist es manchmal ziemlich voll. Deswegen lohnt es sich durchaus, vorher zu reservieren.

Mein Mann war vom Sauerbraten mit Knödel und Salat sehr zufrieden. Die Spargel mit Petersilienkartoffeln und Schinken war ausgezeichnet. Die Bedienung sehr freundlich. Wir haben noch Urlaub und werden dort auf jeden Fall noch einmal essen gehen.

Es ist immer wieder schön den Abend im Pappenheimer zu verbringen. Die Atmosphäre ist einfach entspannend und das Essen sehr schmackhaft.
